Buro Sant en Co ：In this winning competition design, De Heuvel will once again become the central square in Tilburg: sparkling and relaxing, modern and green. Tilburg is a rapidly developing city that focuses on the knowledge economy and the arts. Tilburg is also a knowledge and culture city, quickly urbanized on the basis of a patchwork of villages. Ambitious icons are next to a tidy rural structure. The public space is being tackled in an ambitious way. There is a need for specialization and a defined place where special things happen: the focal point of the city. The square de Heuvel gets this role. A special feature of the process was the high level of involvement of the residents of Tilburg. Both in the formulation of the program of requirements and the referendum where the population has been able to choose their favorite design. The competition was about feeling for city ambition and popular emotion.
The plan concept is simple: the triangular stage is a recognizable place in which the Brabant linden trees play a leading role. De Heuvel is again the heart of the city center. The receding form of the space is characteristic and is accentuated in the design by plane trees along the facades. The future city ring is very naturally connected to the Heuvel. The triangle refers to the village origins, joins the space and offers opportunities for numerous contemporary uses. The stage is a hybrid between robust urbanity and a green oasis.
The receding form of the Hill makes it impossible to define the boundary of the square space. To give the Hill a recognizable, spatial logo, a floating stage was chosen, the heart of the Hill. The podium concept has been made visible through the elevation and plank structure in the natural stone. The seat edges are rough-cut and have a seat height. This makes the square the largest piece of furniture in Tilburg. The stage is not only floating (accentuated with lighting under the edge at night) but also a living stage; in the pattern of the natural stone strips, lawn strips and water strips are woven. A new solitary lime tree dominates the square in the long run. The existing statue of the Protestant King William II is placed directly opposite the Catholic Church.
The stage will be a tight, laminated floor and is suitable for a variety of activities. Basalt with natural color variation has been chosen for the floor. The natural plank pattern is accentuated by linear fountains and lawn strips. Grass courts give the square a green haze, the water sprayers filter the sound of the city ring and make the Hill a green oasis. The water is an auditory filter between traffic and accommodation and keeps the terraces in place. The square is characterized by a special bank under the lime trees. A generous wooden bench (designed by Buro Sant and Co), an urban equivalent of the original ‘benkske under the tree’. The city bench has a robust and elegant design of high-quality wood and is the meeting point on the square. A subtle light organ is integrated into the painters, making the square extra attractive in the evenings. In addition, the water jets are particularly designed and refer to the old linden tree.
The square forms the entrance to the core shopping area and is adjacent to the so-called ‘city ring’. The city ring is the loop-shaped main access of the inner city. It is precisely this interface between the inner city of the inner city and the dynamics of the city ring that makes the Hill interesting. It forms the face of the inner city with plenty of space for terraces, events and accommodation options, but is also the hub of pedestrian traffic. In addition, a bicycle cellar is located under the square.
