MVVA:The Brooklyn Bridge Park site is long and narrow, extending 1.3 miles along the shore of the East River, from Jay Street to Atlantic Avenue. The majority of the site was a defunct bulk cargo shipping and storage complex, built by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey in the 1950s but rendered obsolete by the rise of container shipping. Out of operation since 1983 and cut off from the surrounding residential neighborhood by the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway, the complex included six piers and several upland warehouse buildings. The north end of the site is the area under and between the Brooklyn and Manhattan Bridges, and was an underutilized landscape surrounded by light industrial and loft complexes.

Brooklyn Bridge Park transforms this stretch of post-industrial waterfront into a thriving 85-acre civic landscape. The park mediates a system of new and refurbished connections between the city and the river, becoming a vital urban threshold that provides space for a wide variety of activities and programming, all with spectacular views of the Manhattan skyline. Careful attention to the site’s rich history and its extraordinary built and natural features ensures that this radical transformation creates an urban destination that is dynamic and engaging for generations to come.

Pier 3 is the final pier to be converted to parkland. The most prominent feature of Pier 3 is its large central lawn protected from the wind and sun by groves of shrubs and trees. Along the north side of the Pier there is an exploratory labyrinth with interactive features. The outer section of the Pier hosts a grove with moveable furniture, including picnic tables and Adirondack chairs clustered to create a variety of seating areas. The surrounding hardscaped area provides space for small events and performances as well as unprogrammed play.

The labyrinth on Pier 3 has hedges of varying sizes to create an exploratory maze of picnic tables, mirrored games, and historic elements salvaged from the park like bollards, cleats, and excavated railroad tracks. Within the maze you will find a walk-in kaleidoscope, an echo game, dance chimes, parabolic reflectors, a conference tube, and interesting seating options, including Gunter Beltzig stone seating.

The Pier 3 Greenway Terrace.

Framed by panoramic views of the New York Harbor and skyline, and featuring salvaged granite blocks that emerge from planted areas, the Pier 3 Greenway Terrace completes the continuous promenade that runs along the water’s edge from Pier 1 to Pier 6. Admire the scenery from shady seating nooks beneath the Metasequoia trees or savor the stillness from the lawn cascading down the terrace to the south.

The sweeping Granite Terrace provides a unique gathering spot with spectacular views of the New York Harbor. The terrace includes stacked granite blocks that rise 4 to 5 feet and include plantings of flowering trees and evergreens to provide a shady seating area. The granite was salvaged from work on the Roosevelt Island and Willis Avenue Bridges. Included in this area is the sound attenuating hill that separates this stretch of park from Furman Street and the noisy Brooklyn-Queens Expressway. This hill runs along the entire length of the Pier 3 Greenway Terrace and reduces noise pollution in the park up to 75 percent.

On the Granite Terrace, you can find the Brooklyn Bridge Park Book Cart, which houses a small library of books available to the public. Sit back, relax, and enjoy sweeping waterfront views with your favorite book. Open seasonally every day from dawn till dusk.
