The Oaklands Wetland project is a partnership between the City of Marion, the Adelaide and Mount Lofty Ranges Natural Resources Management Board, the South Australian Government, and the Australian Government as part of the Stormwater Reuse and Aquifer Storage and Recovery (ASR) project.

At its core the wetland is a functional 400-500 ML/year harvesting scheme which is a central feature of the highly valued community park. The wetland cleans stormwater from the Sturt River, and the cleaned stormwater is then stored in a confined aquifer recharge nearly 100 metres under the ground. The stored water is than later pumped through distribution pipes to up to 30 council reserves for irrigation purposes.

The design of the wetland is a constant flow harvesting wetlands and therefore offers more opportunities for landscape integration than traditional gravity “treatment” wetlands. In particular avoiding an ‘extended detention’ zone allows the permanent water levels to be much closer to terrestrial activities (both vertically and laterally).
