The landscape design for the Simons Center for Geometry and Physics at Stony Brook University integrates science, technology, and art in the development of a new academic and research facility. Geometric patterns are expressed in the Penrose paving pattern, planting waves and a series of sculptural solar screens designed by Hoberman Associates. Framed by seasonally interesting native trees and grasses, a large water wall and cascading water feature creates a dramatic arrival space and is an integral element in cooling the buildings mechanical systems. A terrace located off of the Simons Center Café includes wave planters that are used to grow herbs and other organic food for the Café’s dishes. The Simons Center for Geometry and Physics was designed to achieve LEED Gold certification.
