SBLA Studio:In 2018 CAP (Collingwood Arts Precinct) took over the Collingwood Technical School site. CAP was to create an affordable arts space in Melbourne, that would house not-for-profit tenants, up and coming artists and art based practices.

SBLA Studio’s public realm design aimed to do the following:
1. Create a green public sanctuary within a built-up inner-city neighbourhood.
2. Present a site that values its working-class past in particular its former contribution as the Collingwood Technical School.
3. Provide a design that is flexible and open for artists to appropriate/take ownership of, to suit their individual needs.

The success of the Collingwood Yards as it operates today has much to do with the previous CEO – Marcus Westbury’s visionary approach and ambition to ensure that the artist studios are affordable, attractive to a range of tenants and sized to allow for flexibility. The CAP team deeply considered the feasibility of a diverse range of businesses and how they could support each other to ensure ongoing economic success. They secured over $15 million dollars for the social enterprise. This approach ensured that the project was feasible from the outset, prior to the creation of the public realm and retrofit of the buildings.

Site Narrative

SBLA studio were inspired by Collingwood’s industrial heritage (in terms of functionality of the site) and the sites relationship to the nearby Birrarung (Yarra river). We were appreciative of the finer urban fabric that made this site so ‘raw’. We aimed to retain as much of the history of the former Technical School that we could and ensuring that the country on which it rests on is revealed through planting and soft surface insertions. We could see the value in the site’s building qualities and the joy that it would bring to people.

Through site investigation and research, we found that one of the technical school’s teaching method was based on the Swedish “Sloyd School” – a pedagogy based on crafts, handicraft, or handiwork. This teaching method focuses on materiality and students would experiment with different materials such as wood, brick and textiles to test a single problem, and see how that material may impact the outcome.

SBLA Studio were motivated by this concept, carrying it into our design approach for the landscape. We were particularly interested in how we could provide ‘material’ that could be tested by the users of the future space. The result was to dissect the space into two; the ‘Soft Yard’ (still to be installed) made by a patterned rug of permeable pavers with a native grassland in the centre and the ‘Hard Yard,’ (still to be installed) as its name suggest showing woodwork and bricklaying as important trades of both the past and present. Each of these yards act as stage for day to day happenings to occur with a flexibility that is open ended. We presented the soft yard as a space for planting-based performance, a place for users to sit amongst the greenery and daydream. The hard yard and escarpment were presented as areas for appropriation and supported with imagery of the great choreography Pina Bausch.

This openness to design as framework, subsequently allows artists and uses to complete the space for that phase in time until it is dismantled, only then to be prepared again. For example, the Hard Yard with its concrete escarpment and expansive blank walls is appropriated for temporary art installations, digital art, dance and music. The soft yard is used for markets, fashion parades, performance, gathering and wares.

The Soft Yard is characterised by the three mature plan trees that cloak the permeable surface below. SBLA Studio originally designed a permeable paved rug emanating a chosen “Sloyd” textile pattern. It will one day host an array of understory native grass plantings – like the species found along the Birrarung and within Yarra Bend Park. It was to provide a cooling courtyard (as evident in our conceptual site plan). The space is green and soft in appeal with warm coloured sandstone setts that tie into the bark of the plane trees and future native plantings.

Stage 01 of the project is now complete. The Soft Yard ‘Sloyd rug’ is yet to be realised, as well as the Hard Yard. Circus Oz are now considering how the Spiegeltent and the Circus Oz buildings adjacent to the Hard Yard can be integrated within the public realm.

We are confident that in time these elements will come to fruition. We believe the solid, yet malleable frame by which this design was created, is successful in drawing people to the site and supporting users and occupiers to express their individual aspirations.
