Lemay:With a stunning and thorough makeover from Lemay, Place Vauquelin reaffirms itself as a distinguished destination at the heart of Montreal’s Administrative District, symbolizing the exercise of democratic power. Its rebirth is timed to coincide with the 375th anniversary of Montreal in 2017. For decades before this mandate, the sunken, split-level public square gave the impression of closing in on itself. Vegetation was blocking sight lines, posing safety and security risks with its climbing and concealment opportunities. Furniture and surfaces were crumbling, and one could be forgiven for not realizing this was Old Montreal’s most elevated site.

Now a vital, distinctive space on the historic neighbourhood’s northern border, Place Vauquelin is the perfect place for visitors and locals to rest and refresh themselves. Its strong relationship with Notre-Dame Street, from which traffic of all kinds has flowed for over 150 years, makes it a natural gathering place where countless pedestrian itineraries converge.

The square’s fountain is a major attraction and now offers comfortable seating. To preserve and enhance this key element, all of its features and an underground mechanical room have been rebuilt. Behind the scenes, sophisticated technology makes the fountain’s jets dance, light up and even change colour for special occasions; it also heats the square and access ramp’s surfaces, guaranteeing comfort and universal accessibility year-round.

The latter component, a bold first for Montreal, was a suggestion from Lemay and Les consultants S.M. Inc. engineers. Connecting the square to the historic Champ de Mars to the north was a different challenge that yielded Lemay’s striking and contemporary solution: a sculptural, landscaped flight of stairs with integrated zigzagging ramp. The stairs and ramp (“stramp”) invite meandering and an irresistibly scenic detour for north-south itineraries. This innovative design is now used as a reference by the City of Montreal for projects requiring universal accessibility.

Lemay made the site more user-friendly and inviting by removing physical and visual barriers to the site, opening up stunning north and southward sightlines; democratizing the space, levelling it to make it universally accessible, flush with Notre-Dame Street; optimizing and augmenting the tree canopy; and increasing the number of comfortable, contemporary benches. All with respect for the site’s genius loci and sensitive archeological remains.

The new layout creates a feeling of openness along Notre-Dame Street, inviting people in and freeing up heritage building facades. Lemay and Ombrages’ illumination strategy showcases the site’s key elements for maximum dramatic impact.

The project also strengthens the square’s many roles: as a connection between the historic and modern city; as a threshold to either one; as a formal and informal gathering place and reference point; and as a ceremonial forecourt for City Hall. Lemay succeeded in showcasing its formal aspects, while at the same time offering a contemporary reading of the square and inviting visitors inward toward the fountain.
