COBE<\/strong><\/a>\uff1aLate August was the official opening of a new, major square in Copenhagen: Karen Blixens Plads. The square has a unique undulating landscape with hollow hills and low bicyclebeds creating a new and innovative way to park bicycles. It is one of the largest public spaces in Copenhagen and has room for more than 2,000 parked bicycles. COBE, under Dan Stubbergaard\u2019s leadership, created the design in close collaboration with EKJ Consulting Engineers.<\/p>\n

At more than 20,000 m2 Karen Blixens Plads is one of the largest public squares in Copenhagen. Situated between the University of Copenhagen and the Danish Royal Library\u2019s buildings at the university\u2019s South Campus, the open and welcoming urban space is an innovative, spectacular and multi-functional architectural design that accommodates and promotes green transportation, climate change adaptation and biodiversity. \u200b\u6211\u4eec\u5c06\u516c\u5171\u5e7f\u573a\u4e0e\u5927\u5b66\u5e7f\u573a\u7ed3\u5408\uff0c\u8bbe\u8ba1\u6210\u4e00\u5f20\u8986\u76d6\u5728\u8d77\u4f0f\u7684\u5c71\u4e18\u5730\u5f62\u4e0a\u7684\u5730\u6bef\uff0c\u5e76\u5c06\u5927\u7a7a\u95f4\u5206\u5272\u6210\u66f4\u5c0f\u7684\u533a\u57df\uff0c\u4f7f\u5c71\u4e18(\u5706\u9876)\u4e0a\u90e8\u548c\u5185\u90e8\u90fd\u6709\u6d3b\u52a8\u7a7a\u95f4\u3002\u8fd9\u4e09\u5ea7\u81ea\u884c\u8f66\u5c71\u4e18\u7531\u6df7\u51dd\u571f\u6d47\u7b51\u800c\u6210\u7684\uff0c\u5916\u9762\u94fa\u8bbe\u7684\u6750\u6599\u662f\u989c\u8272\u4e0e\u5468\u56f4\u5927\u5b66\u5efa\u7b51\u5916\u89c2\u76f8\u547c\u5e94\u7684\u624b\u7ed8\u74f7\u7816\u3002<\/p>\n

\u9664\u4e86\u4f5c\u4e3a\u5b66\u751f\u3001\u5458\u5de5\u548c\u5f53\u5730\u4eba\u6d3b\u52a8\u7684\u805a\u4f1a\u573a\u6240\uff0c\u5e7f\u573a\u8fd8\u4e3a\u5927\u5b66\u7684\u8bb8\u591a\u7528\u6237\uff0c\u5305\u62ec16000\u540d\u5b66\u751f\u548c2000\u540d\u5458\u5de5\uff0c\u63d0\u4f9b\u4e86\u4e00\u4e2a\u5927\u5bb9\u91cf\u7684\u81ea\u884c\u8f66\u505c\u8f66\u573a\u3002\u8fd9\u4e00\u521b\u65b0\u800c\u72ec\u7279\u7684\u8bbe\u8ba1\u4e3a\u54e5\u672c\u54c8\u6839\u7684\u81ea\u884c\u8f66\u5f00\u8f9f\u4e862000\u4e2a\u65b0\u7684\u5c0f\u578b\u5e7f\u573a\u3002<\/p>\n

The combined public square and university plaza is designed as a carpet that covers an undulating terrain of small hills and breaks the large space up into smaller zones with room for activities both on and inside the hills (domes). The three bicycle hills were created as cast concrete shells clad with hand-laid tiles in colors echoing the exteriors of the surrounding university buildings.<\/p>\n

In addition to serving as an active meeting place for students, employees and locals, the square also contains a high-capacity bicycle parking space for the many users of the university, including 16,000 students and 2,000 employees. \u2018Copenhagen is one of the world\u2019s leading bicycle cities, with more than 40 per cent of the city\u2019s inhabitants riding their bike for their daily commute. That requires a new and flexible approach to bicycle parking. In previous projects we have developed innovative bicycle parking solutions that form a natural element in the environment. By N\u00f8rreport Station, for example, we created the so called bicycle beds, and here, at Karen Blixen Plads, the solution is bicycle hills. The integrated hilly landscape creates a space with a large capacity for bicycles, two-thirds of them in covered spaces inside the bicycle hills,\u2019 says Dan Stubbergaard, architect and founder of COBE.<\/p>\n

COBE\u548cEKJ\u4e0eCN3\u5408\u4f5c\uff0c\u8ba1\u7b97\u5e76\u521b\u5efa\u4e86\u5e7f\u573a\u6807\u5fd7\u6027\u7684\u6df7\u51dd\u571f\u5706\u9876\u5efa\u7b51\u7ed3\u6784\u7684\u4e09\u7ef4\u6295\u5f71\u3002\u8be5\u65b9\u6848\u4ee5\u4f5c\u4e3a\u627f\u91cd\u7ed3\u6784\u7684\u58f3\u4f53\u7ed3\u6784\u4e3a\u57fa\u7840\uff0c\u5e76\u4ee5\u7f8e\u5b66\u89d2\u5ea6\uff0c\u5728\u7a79\u9876\u4e0b\u8bbe\u8ba1\u4e86\u4e00\u4e2a\u5de8\u5927\u7684\u901a\u98ce\u7a7a\u95f4\uff0c\u8fd9\u5c31\u5e26\u6765\u4e86\u4e00\u4e2a\u91cd\u5927\u7684\u5efa\u7b51\u6311\u6218\uff0c\u90a3\u5c31\u662f\u901a\u5e38\u7684\u58f3\u4f53\u7ed3\u6784\u90fd\u6ca1\u6709\u5b54\u6d1e\uff0c\u800c\u6211\u4eec\u8fd9\u4e9b\u5706\u9876\u7ed3\u6784\u8fd8\u8981\u6709\u5927\u5f00\u53e3\uff0c\u6240\u4ee5\u9700\u8981\u518d\u8fdb\u884c\u989d\u5916\u7684\u7edf\u8ba1\u5206\u6790\u3002<\/p>\n

In collaboration with CN3, COBE and EKJ\u2019s construction engineers calculated and created 3D projections of the iconic concrete dome constructions. The solution is based on a shell construction as the loadbearing structure. Aesthetically, the design provides a large airy space underneath the domes. However, while a shell construction does not normally have holes in it, these domes have large openings, which constituted a significant challenge and required additional statistical analyses.<\/p>\n

In a soft transition, Karen Blixens Plads brings together the university\u2019s need for urban spaces with the open landscape of the neighboring Amager F\u00e6lled (Amager Commons). The north side of the square, where the three main entrances to the university are located, is an open and multipurpose space. To the south, hilly, undulating meadowland connects the campus with the commons. In addition to bringing nature into the campus the landscape also contributes to climate change adaptation by adding a capacity to handle stormwater. Delaying rainwater in depressions in the landscape utilizes the recreational values of the water and creates small wet biotopes that support biodiversity, enable rainwater evaporation and supplements the canal in case of extreme precipitation, thus contributing to climate change adaptation. The design uses simple, sturdy and durable materials, just as lighting and furnishings are kept to a few, simple elements to ensure a sustainable urban space. All the selected elements are low-maintenance and contribute to the square\u2019s green profile.<\/p>\n

A central feature is an outdoor auditorium with seating for up to 1,000 people on the manmade hills. The hilltops offer additional standing room for concerts or other large public events.<\/p>\n
