RoarcRenew<\/strong><\/a>\uff1aWhat does architectural layout mean for the community?It is a thinking mode centered on the relationship between the food market and its surrounding neighborhood.When we were tasked with the renovation project, we were under a \u201cstrained and limited\u201d budget, but the target cannot be compromised, which is to significantly improve the block and community environment as a whole by focusing on the renovation of the market.With this big picture in mind, we decided to focus on the renovation of the market fa\u00e7ade while respect the original design of the property.<\/p>\n

\u672a\u6765\u7684\u83dc\u573a\u4e0d\u5e94\u8be5\u662f\u5546\u8d85\uff0c\u800c\u662f\u4e00\u4e2a\u5e02\u6c11\u516c\u5171\u5f00\u653e\u7a7a\u95f4\u3002\u8fd9\u662f\u88f8\u7b51\u6240\u575a\u6301\u7684\u5efa\u7b51\u7acb\u573a\u3002\u4e5f\u662f\u5bf9\u4e0a\u4e00\u4e2a\u6c38\u5e74\u83dc\u573a\u6539\u9020\u9879\u76ee\u7684\u6301\u7eed\u8865\u5145\u3002\u56e0\u6b64\uff0c\u5b9a\u4e86\u8fd9\u4e00\u5efa\u7b51\u7acb\u573a\u4e4b\u540e\uff0c\u6240\u6709\u7684\u8bbe\u8ba1\u70b9\uff0c\u90fd\u56f4\u7ed5\u6b64\u6838\u5fc3\u7acb\u573a\u6240\u5c55\u5f00\u3002<\/p>\n

We should build food markets into public open spaces for citizens rather than supermarkets.This is the belief of Roarc Renew and also a concept we explored after the renovation project of the Yongnian Food Market. As our position is clear, we started to create all the design elements with this principle in mind.<\/p>\n

\u672a\u6765\u4e0a\u6d77\u7684\u57ce\u5e02\u683c\u5c40\uff1a\u201c\u4eba\u6c11\u57ce\u5e02\u4eba\u6c11\u5efa\uff0c\u4eba\u6c11\u57ce\u5e02\u4e3a\u4eba\u6c11\u3002\u201d \u8fd9\u5176\u5b9e\u662f\u8981\u5408\u7406\u5b89\u6392\u751f\u4ea7\uff0c\u751f\u6d3b\uff0c\u751f\u6001\u7a7a\u95f4\uff0c\u52aa\u529b\u6269\u5927\u516c\u5171\u7a7a\u95f4\uff0c\u8ba9\u8001\u767e\u59d3\u6709\u5065\u8eab\u5a31\u4e50\u7684\u5730\u65b9\uff0c\u8ba9\u57ce\u5e02\u6210\u4e3a\u8001\u767e\u59d3\u5b9c\u4e1a\u5b9c\u5c45\u7684\u4e50\u56ed\u3002\u56e0\u6b64\uff0c\u5e02\u6c11\u7684\u516c\u5171\u7a7a\u95f4\uff0c\u5e76\u4e0d\u4ec5\u4ec5\u4ee5\u201c\u5546\u4e1a\u576a\u6548\u201d\u4e3a\u51fa\u53d1\u70b9\uff0c\u800c\u662f\u5728\u5e73\u8861\u5546\u4e1a\u7684\u540c\u65f6\uff0c\u4e3a\u9644\u8fd1\u7684\u5c45\u6c11\u63d0\u4f9b\u4e00\u4e2a\u201c\u5b9c\u4e1a\u5b9c\u5c45\u7684\u4e50\u56ed\u201d\u3002<\/p>\n

Should supermarkets be regarded as public spaces? We don\u2019t believe so. We think supermarkets are more of business premises which pursue turnover per square meter. For this kind of sites, all the designs of the architectural flows and layouts are driven by the sought-after \u201cturnover per square meter\u201d.Then how should we define public spaces for citizens? In our view, public spaces are the activity spaces attached to a community, and a \u201cgrey space\u201d in a city.<\/p>\n

Future urban pattern of Shanghai: “people’s city people build, people’s city for people.” In fact, we should reasonably arrange production, life and ecological space, and strive to expand public space, so that people can have places for fitness and entertainment, and make the city a paradise suitable for people to work and live in. In other words, the design of public spaces for citizens should not be driven by the so-called \u201cturnover per square meter\u201d, but be aiming at building a \u201ccomfortable and pleasant place for both working and living\u201d for neighboring residents, which means keeping a good balance between life and business.<\/p>\n

\u56e0\u6b64\uff0c\u83dc\u573a\u7684\u5546\u4e1a\u5c5e\u6027\uff0c\u6211\u4eec\u5e0c\u671b\u6709\u66f4\u591a\u7684\u5728\u201c\u573a\u201d\u7684\u5185\u90e8\u4f53\u73b0\u3002\u800c\u6cbf\u8857\u7684\u5916\u7acb\u9762\uff0c\u662f\u4e00\u4e2a\u5f88\u597d\u7684\u4e0e\u8fc7\u5f80\u5e02\u6c11\u53d1\u751f\u5173\u7cfb\u7684\u573a\u6240\u3002\u8499\u897f\u83dc\u573a\u81ea\u8eab\u7684\u5730\u7f18\u6761\u4ef6\u4e5f\u8f83\u4e3a\u7279\u6b8a\uff0c\u5916\u7acb\u9762\u8fd150m\u957f\uff0c\u7531\u53f0\u9636\u62fe\u7ea7\u800c\u4e0a\u8fdb\u5165\u83dc\u573a\u5185\u90e8\u3002<\/p>\n

Therefore, we can keep the commercial attributes of the food market inside the market. But the fa\u00e7ade facing the street is a space actively interacting with the passing citizens, which will act more like a public space.We noticed that the Mengxi Food Market has a fa\u00e7ade stretching for almost 50m with an upward staircase leading into the market. Based on these unique physical structures, we transformed the straight-line handrail into regular curving waves.<\/p>\n

\u6211\u4eec\u5229\u7528\u8fd9\u4e00\u7279\u6b8a\u6784\u9020\uff0c\u5c06\u539f\u672c\u201c\u4e00\u201d\u5b57\u72b6\u7684\u680f\u6746\u6276\u624b\uff0c\u53d8\u5316\u6210\u6ce2\u6d6a\u66f2\u7ebf \u2014\u2014\u201c\u51f9\u51f8\u51f9\u51f8\u201d\uff0c\u6765\u6a21\u7cca\u83dc\u573a\u7acb\u9762\u4e0e\u8857\u9053\u4e4b\u95f4\u7684\u8fb9\u754c\u3002\u800c\u6ce2\u6d6a\u7ebf\u4e2d\u7684\u6bcf\u4e00\u6761\u5185\u51f9\u7a7a\u95f4\uff0c\u90fd\u6210\u4e3a\u4e86\u8fd9\u6761\u4eba\u884c\u9053\u4e0a\u4e3a\u5e02\u6c11\u51c6\u5907\u7684\u4f11\u606f\u7ad9\u3002\u5728\u6a21\u7cca\u8fd9\u6761\u8fb9\u754c\u7684\u8bbe\u8ba1\u65f6\uff0c\u6211\u4eec\u82b1\u4e86\u5927\u91cf\u7684\u65f6\u95f4\u89c2\u5bdf\u539f\u83dc\u573a\u5468\u8fb9\u7684\u4f7f\u7528\u4eba\u7fa4\u7684\u4e60\u60ef\u3002\u4e3e\u4e2a\u4f8b\u5b50\uff0c\u6211\u4eec\u53d1\u73b0\uff0c\u51e0\u4e4e\u6bcf\u5929\u4e2d\u5348\u90fd\u4f1a\u6709\u5927\u7237\u5750\u5728\u4eba\u884c\u9053\u4e24\u8fb9\u4e0b\u68cb\uff0c\u5f53\u4eba\u884c\u9053\u4e0a\u6ca1\u6709\u66f4\u591a\u7684\u7a7a\u95f4\u7684\u65f6\u5019\uff0c\u5927\u7237\u4eec\u5c31\u4f1a\u7fa4\u805a\u5728\u9a6c\u8def\u4e0a\u4e24\u4fa7\uff0c\u56f4\u89c2\uff0c\u4e0b\u68cb\u3002<\/p>\n

\u56e0\u6b64\uff0c\u91ce\u7af9\u7bf1\u66f2\u7ebf\u7684\u51f9\u51f8\u6240\u5f62\u6210\u7684\u4e00\u4e2a\u4e2a\u5c0f\u7a7a\u95f4\uff0c\u4e3a\u5e02\u6c11\uff0c\u6216\u5728\u8fd9\u91cc\u6709\u4f7f\u7528\u4e60\u60ef\u7684\u4e00\u7fa4\u4eba\uff0c\u5c31\u662f\u5927\u7237\u4eec\u6240\u8bbe\u7acb\u51c6\u5907\u7684\u3002\u800c\u76f8\u5bf9\u5e94\u5730\uff0c\u51f8\u8d77\u7684\u7a7a\u95f4\uff0c\u5219\u662f\u83dc\u573a\u6cbf\u8857\u7684\u5546\u5bb6\u5e97\u94fa\u7ed9\u5230\u83dc\u573a\u5ba2\u4eba\u7684\u5c0f\u61a9\u4e4b\u5730\u3002<\/p>\n

In this way, the boundary between the market fa\u00e7ade and the neighboring street was blurred. It also created many hollow areas functioning as the rest stops. Apart from the efforts to blur the boundary, we also spent a large amount of time observing the habits of its customers. For example, we found that some senior citizens come to play chess almost every day at the pedestrian walkways. The small hollow spaces created by the wild bamboo fences are specially designed for them and the ones who need a rest here. Accordingly, the raised space created by the walkway functions as rest sites for market customers offered by the street-side shops.<\/p>\n

\u8499\u81ea\u897f\u8def\u8fd9\u6761\u5e7d\u9759\u7684\u9a6c\u8def\uff0c\u4e0e\u6b66\u5eb7\u8def\uff0c\u6c38\u5609\u8def\u4e00\u6837\uff0c\u90fd\u5448\u73b0\u7740\u4e0a\u6d77\u7684\u4e00\u4efd\u5b81\u9759\u4e0e\u97f5\u5473\u3002\u800c\u6f2b\u5e03\u6cd5\u56fd\u68a7\u6850\u7684\u8857\u9053\uff0c\u4e24\u8fb9Artdeco\u7684\u522b\u5885\u7fa4\u843d\uff0cXX\u91cc\uff0cXX\u5f04\u7684\u6d77\u6d3e\u540d\u79f0\uff0c\u4ee5\u53ca\u90a3\u4e9b\u7ecf\u5386\u4e86\u98ce\u96e8\u7684\u7af9\u7bf1\u7b06\u56f4\u6321\uff0c\u4ea4\u7ec7\u6210\u4e86\u6700\u6700\u5730\u9053\u7684\u8001\u4e0a\u6d77\u98ce\u60c5\u3002<\/p>\n

Similar to Wukang Road and Yongjia Road, the block on the Mengzi West Road presents a peaceful vibe and a unique styleof Shanghai. Plane trees are intersected with with Art Deco villas at the roadsides, forming the characteristic Shanghai lanes and the age-old bamboo fences form the authentic old Shanghai style.<\/p>\n

\u2013 The wild bamboo, a very special material, was selected as the main material for this Mengxi Food Market renovation project. From the point of design intention, the wild bamboo is a reminder of the \u201crural and wild theme\u201d of the Yongnian project; while from the point of meaning, Mengxi Food Market have made one step further to give full play to the romantic \u201cold Shanghai\u201d style with use of wild bamboo materials.<\/p>\n

At the same time, the texture of wild bamboo possesses visual cues for the \u201crural and wild theme\u201d. These two elements complement each other perfectly well.<\/p>\n

In terms of of construction, wild bamboo has taken root in Shanghai for several decades. It has become a symbol of \u201cShanghai style\u201d and was often used as fences for villas by men of letters. As a durable material, its life in natural environment can last over 5 years after corrosion and fungus-resistant treatment.<\/p>\n

Unlike the ordinary wild bamboo weaving pattern, this time we have tried a new pattern. While creating a whole curving surface, the details were also made interwoven in a 60 degree angle to make each bamboo joint enlarged visibly, which produces an exquisite visual delight and construction logic.<\/p>\n

The indoor shop signs also used bamboo material to inherite the use of light-weight steel wire joints from the Yongnian project, forming a unified visual style between the inside and the outside.<\/p>\n
