BW-landscape PLANNING AND DESIGN<\/strong><\/a>\uff1aThe destruction of natural ecosystem. The disintegration of traditional way of life. Apathy and disengagement among people. Those are supposed to be the costs of urban development. But are they really inevitable?We certainly say No\uff01We believe spatial reconstruction is not just about physical space. It is more about natural space and emotional space.<\/p>\n

Our project is located at the edge of Yichang, a city in Hubei Province known as \u201cthe pearl of the Gorge\u201d. The locale was pristine but without much of effective resources, except for a barren river valley, which runs 500 meters long and averages 60 meters wide.That is where we launched our initiative. With an undertaking for natural restoration and emotional reconstruction, we set out to repair and reshape the entirety of valley space, using various landscape elements to convey and extend human emotions.<\/p>\n

\u9879\u76ee\u4ece\u7eff\u5316\u62a4\u5761\uff0c\u5730\u5f62\u6750\u6599\uff0c\u751f\u6001\u91cd\u5851\u4e09\u4e2a\u65b9\u9762\u8bb2\u8ff0\u8bbe\u8ba1\u8fc7\u7a0b\u3002<\/p>\n

\u751f\u6001\u4fee\u590d\u6700\u56f0\u96be\u7684\u662f\u5982\u4f55\u5c06\u6cb3\u8c37\u4e24\u5cb8\u8fd120\u7c73\u9ad8\u5dee\u7684\u62a4\u5761\u7eff\u8272\u5316\u3002\u6211\u4eec\u6700\u7ec8\u9009\u62e9\u5927\u9762\u79ef\u91c7\u7528\u52a0\u7b4b\u571f\u6321\u5899\u7684\u505a\u6cd5\uff08\u7ed3\u6784\u539f\u578b\u6700\u65e9\u51fa\u73b0\u4e8e5000\u5e74\u524d\u826f\u6e1a\u6587\u5316\u65e9\u4e2d\u671f\uff0c\u4ee5\u8349\u88f9\u6ce5\u56fa\u571f\u7b51\u575d\u6321\u6c34\uff09\u3002\u65bd\u5de5\u671f\u95f4\u9884\u5148\u5728\u52a0\u7b4b\u571f\u79cd\u690d\u888b\u5185\u6df7\u5408\u5927\u91cf\u8349\u79cd\u548c\u82b1\u79cd\u3002\u4ec520\u5929\u4ec5\u9760\u96e8\u6c34\u6dcb\u704c\uff0c\u62a4\u5761\u7eff\u5316\u8986\u76d6\u5c31\u8fbe\u523080%\u3002\u690d\u88ab\u6062\u590d\u975e\u5e38\u9ad8\u6548\u3002<\/p>\n

The hardest part of natural restoration is the greening of the revetment on both sides of the valley, which climbs almost 20 meters in elevation. Our eventual choice is retaining walls built with reinforced earth. (The prototype of this structure dates back to the early period the Liangzhu culture more than 5000 years ago, when water bank was built with grass-reinforced mud blocks to protect arable earth.)We pre-blended the reinforced earth with large amount of grass seeds and flower seeds before filling it into planting bags. As the result, the green coverage of revetment reached 80% within 20 days merely on natural raining irrigation. This proved to be a highly efficient way of vegetation restoration.<\/p>\n

We followed the inherent river course as the central thread for landscape planning, placing traffic lines and activity grounds accordingly.The idea is to maximize the integration between construction and original landform, as well as to minimize the damage to the natural environment. We did our best to collect building materials off the land. We extracted and stored local topsoil, and recycled pottery shards and wood chips.<\/p>\n

\u8bbe\u8ba1\u5c3d\u91cf\u4fdd\u7559\u73b0\u573a\u6709\u6548\u690d\u7269\uff1b\u642d\u914d\u9488\u53f6\u548c\u5e38\u7eff\u9614\u53f6\u5f62\u6210\u6df7\u4ea4\u6797\uff1b\u957f\u8fdc\u8003\u8651\u5feb\u6162\u751f\u690d\u7269\u672a\u6765\u6210\u6797\u7684\u6548\u679c\u3002\u9009\u7528\u66f4\u591a\u5355\u4f4d\u53f6\u9762\u79ef\u5438\u9644\u9897\u7c92\u7269\u66f4\u5f3a\u7684\u690d\u7269\u4f7f\u4e4b\u66f4\u6709\u6548\u964d\u4f4ePM2.5\u4ee5\u51c0\u5316\u7a7a\u6c14\u3002\u7ecf\u6d4b\u7b97\u5f53\u6cb3\u8c37\u7eff\u5316\u8986\u76d6\u7eff\u4ece\u539f30%\u589e\u52a0\u523095%\uff0c\u672a\u6765\u573a\u5730PM2.5\u542b\u91cf\u5c06\u51cf\u5c1140%\u5de6\u53f3\uff0c\u590f\u5b63\u5e73\u5747\u6e29\u5ea6\u964d\u964d\u4f4e2\u20143\u2103\u3002<\/p>\n

Our design put an emphasis on preservation of local effective plants. Afforestation took the form of coniferous-evergreen broadleaf mingled forest, for the long-term benefit of balancing fast growing and slow growing plants.The choices of plants favored those of higher unit leaf-area capacity for aerial particle absorption, in order to lower PM 2.5 levels and improve air quality.According to our estimation, the green coverage ratio of the valley improved from the original 30% to 95%, the future PM 2.5 levels would be reduced by about 40%, and the average summertime temperature lowered by 2-3\u2103.<\/p>\n

Reconstruction of emotional space: the fly-away bridge<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u6839\u636e\u9879\u76ee\u7279\u6027\uff0c\u4e24\u4e2a\u5730\u5757\u5206\u9694\uff0c\u8054\u7cfb\u4e24\u5cb8\uff0c\u9700\u8981\u6865\u3002\u800c\u4e2d\u897f\u65b9\u6587\u5316\u91cc\u201c\u6865\u201d\u90fd\u4e0d\u5355\u662f\u8de8\u8d8a\u969c\u788d\u5230\u8fbe\u4e24\u5730\u7684\u529f\u80fd\u6784\u7b51\u3002\u201c\u6865\u201d\u4e5f\u662f\u4eba\u4e0e\u4eba\uff0c\u4e0e\u52a8\u7269\uff0c\u4e0e\u81ea\u7136\u7684\u6c9f\u901a\uff0c\u4e92\u52a8\u3001\u4ea4\u878d\u7684\u8c61\u5f81\u3002\u56fd\u4eba\u7684\u4f20\u7edf\u62e9\u5c45\u7406\u5ff5\uff1a\u6816\u4e4b\u7f8e\u597d\u5c31\u662f\u5c45\u800c\u90bb\u6c34\u3002\u6709\u6c34\u5e94\u6709\u6865\uff0c\u6709\u4f60\u624d\u6709\u5bb6\u3002\u6865\u53c8\u662f\u60c5\u611f\u201c\u7a7a\u95f4\u201d\u7684\u7ef4\u7cfb\u3002<\/p>\n

A bridge is a connection, and also a conception.In both Western and Chinese cultures, the idea of a \u201cbridge\u201d is not confined to the functional structure that connects two places over obstacles. A bridge is also a symbol of communication, of interaction and harmony between human themselves, between human and creatures, human and nature.In traditional Chinese ideals, the finest location of residence is to \u201cmake neighbor with water\u201d. Bridge arises over water, and home takes roots over connection. In a sense, bridges are perfect links and extensions of emotional spaces.<\/p>\n

The fly-away bridge boasts a multi-dimensional Z-shaped design that transcends the lateral and longitudinal limits of the ground, forming a set of paths submerged in multi-level, multi-dimensional and multi-spatial experiences.Thus every direction, everyone and everything artificial and natural are connected in harmony.<\/p>\n

In an opinion poll of 115 visitors\uff0c86% of the participants rated the valley landscape scenery as \u201csatisfactory\u201d or \u201cvery satisfactory\u201d, especially the fly-away bridge, which earned a satisfactory rating of 97%.<\/p>\n

We gathered that the fly-away bridge arouses immense delight and sense of participation. It is the best interpretation of communication among people, and harmonious coexistence between human and nature.The essence of our project is a twofold reconstruction: on the natural layer the reconstruction of hills, woods, creek and valley, and on the emotional layer the reconstruction of connection with the fly-away bridge.By \u201cconnection\u201d we are not merely aiming at people themselves. It is a closed-loop space between human and nature: human reshapes nature; nature replenishes human. Within this space, people pass around and communicate their emotions.<\/p>\n
