The topography of Wadi Rum closely resembles that of Mars. This serene desert landscape had been a stage for many space-age movies such as \u2018The Martian (2015)\u2019, \u2018Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (2016)\u2019 and \u2018The Last Days on Mars\u2019.<\/p>\n

Taking reference from the lightweight geodesic dome system of \u2018Mars Camp\u2019 which is located on a plot near the site, the design team envisioned a novel system of 3D printed panels that can be deployed onto a CNC bent, steel pipe system.<\/p>\n

\u6211\u4eec\u7684\u56e2\u961f\u4f7f\u7528\u751f\u6210\u5f0f\u8bbe\u8ba1\u65b9\u6cd5\u6765\u6a21\u62df\u4e00\u4e2a\u6574\u4f53\u7ed3\u6784\uff1a\u4e00\u4e2a\u75313D\u6253\u5370\u805a\u5408\u7269\u5916\u58f3\u4e0e3D\u6253\u5370\u6df7\u51dd\u571f\u8868\u9762\u6df7\u5408\u7684\u7269\u4f53\u3002\u53d7\u5f53\u5730\u8d1d\u90fd\u56e0\u4eba\u72ec\u7279\u7684\u79fb\u52a8\u5efa\u7b51\u7684\u542f\u53d1\uff0c\u6211\u4eec\u503e\u5411\u4e8e\u4f7f\u7528\u201cMesh Relaxation\u201d\u53c2\u6570\u5316\u7b56\u7565\u6765\u6a21\u62df\u5e10\u7bf7\u5f62\u5f0f\uff0c\u5728\u5e73\u8861\u72b6\u6001\u4e0b\u751f\u6210\u6570\u5b57\u60ac\u94fe\u7ebf\u7f51\u683c\u3002<\/p>\n

Our team utilized generative design methods to simulate a holistic structure: a hybrid of a 3D printed polymer shell on 3D printed concrete topography.\u00a0Inspired by the ingenuity of the mobile architecture of the local Bedouins, we were inclined to simulate a tent-form using the \u2018Mesh Relaxation\u2019 parametric strategy, which generates a digital Catenary mesh geometry, in equilibrium.<\/p>\n

\u591a\u4e2a\u8282\u70b9\u4e4b\u95f4\u7684\u78c1\u529b\u6a21\u5f0f\u73b0\u8c61\u884d\u751f\u51fa\u4e86\u4e00\u79cd\u6709\u8da3\u7684\u8bbe\u8ba1\u3002\u4e3a\u4e86\u5c06\u8fd9\u4e00\u73b0\u8c61\u91cf\u5316\u6210\u4e00\u4e2a\u53ef\u6a21\u62df\u6a21\u5f0f\u7684\u6570\u5b57\u7b97\u6cd5\uff0c\u8be5\u56e2\u961f\u91c7\u7528\u4e86\u7531\u5fb7\u56fd\u6570\u5b66\u5bb6C. Runge\u548cM.W. Kutta\u7814\u53d1\u7684\u65b9\u6cd5\u7f16\u5199\u4e86\u4e00\u4e2a\u201cRK4\u65b9\u6cd5\u201d\u7684\u811a\u672c\u3002\u5927\u7ea6\u57281900\u5e74\u5de6\u53f3\uff0c\u78c1\u573a\u6a21\u62df\u4ea7\u751f\u7684\u201c\u6d41\u7ebf\u201d\u88ab\u6295\u5f71\u5230\u7ecf\u8fc7\u6570\u5b57\u6a21\u62df\u7684\u4f18\u5316\u7f51\u683c\u4e0a\uff0c\u8be5\u7f51\u683c\u662f\u901a\u8fc7\u8fd1\u4f3c\u767e\u5e74\u66f2\u7ebf\u7684\u811a\u672c\u800c\u751f\u6210\u7684\u3002<\/p>\n

\u8be5\u811a\u672c\u4ea7\u751f\u7c7b\u4f3c\u78c1\u529b\u7684\u77e2\u91cf\u573a\uff0c\u7136\u540e\u5904\u7406\u8fd9\u4e9b\u77e2\u91cf\u573a\u5c06\u7ed3\u6784\u7684\u5916\u58f3\u7ec6\u5206\u4e3a\u57286\u8f74\u5de5\u4e1a\u673a\u5668\u4eba\u6253\u5370\u8303\u56f4\u5185\u7684\u9762\u677f\u30023D\u6253\u5370\u6df7\u51dd\u571f\u5e73\u53f0\u7684\u9636\u68af\u5730\u5f62\u521b\u9020\u4e86\u4ece\u6c99\u5730\u5230\u5ba4\u5185\u7684\u8fc7\u6e21\u7a7a\u95f4\u3002\u7f51\u683c\u951a\u5b9a\u5728\u9636\u68af\u5e73\u53f0\u7684\u5916\u56f4\uff0c\u4ece\u800c\u4e3a\u5165\u53e3\u521b\u5efa\u4e86\u8fce\u5bbe\u62f1\u95e8\u3002<\/p>\n

By grounding the tent form as a \u2018diagram of forces\u2019 emitting various \u2018charges\u2019 that correspond to seating areas, we looked at the phenomena of magnetic fields to unify those charges.\u00a0We used the patterns emerging from the interaction of one space to another, to develop the floor plan of the pavilion.<\/p>\n

The physical phenomena of the magnetic force patterns between a number of nodes represents an opportunity for an interesting planning strategy.\u00a0To quantify this phenomenon into a digital algorithm simulating those patterns, the team wrote a script that adopts the \u2018RK4 Method\u2019, developed by the German mathematicians C. Runge and M.W. Dutta.\u00a0Around 1900. The \u2018flow-lines\u2019 from the magnetic field simulation are projected onto a digitally simulated optimized mesh which is generated via a script that approximates centenary curves.<\/p>\n

The script generates vector fields resembling magnetic forces which are then manipulated to subdivide the outer shell of the structure into panels that are within the printing range of a 6-axis industrial robot.\u00a0A stepping topography of 3D printed concrete platform creates a transition from the sandy site to the interior. The mesh is anchored towards the periphery of the stepped platform, creating welcoming archways for entries.<\/p>\n

\u573a\u5730\u4e2d\u6240\u6709\u7684\u7ba1\u7ebf\u63a5\u89e6\u70b9\u90fd\u7531\u652f\u6491\u7ba1\u5730\u9762\u7684\u4e2d\u5fc3\u5ef6\u4f38\u51fa\u6765\uff0c\u8fdb\u800c\u5f62\u6210\u7f06\u7d22\u63a5\u89e6\u70b9\uff0c\u56f4\u7ed5\u7740\u8fd9\u4e9b\u70b9\u5f62\u6210\u80fd\u5bb9\u7eb3\u4eba\u7684\u7a7a\u95f4\u3002\u5728\u5f62\u4f3c\u6f0f\u6597\u7684\u7ed3\u6784\u4e2d\u5fc3\uff0c\u79cd\u690d\u4e86\u6c99\u6f20\u6811\u6728\u548c\u704c\u6728\u4ee5\u8c03\u8282\u5ba4\u5185\u6c14\u5019\u3002 \u8fd9\u4e9b\u201c\u6f0f\u6597\u201d\u4e5f\u8d77\u5230\u201c\u91c7\u5149\u4e95\u201d\u7684\u4f5c\u7528\uff0c\u6355\u6349\u81ea\u7136\u5149\uff0c\u5e76\u5c06\u81ea\u7136\u5149\u5f15\u5165\u7a7a\u95f4\u3002<\/p>\n

\u901a\u8fc7\u7ec6\u5206\u7ec4\u6210\u5916\u58f3\u7684\u9762\u677f\uff0c\u5b9e\u73b0\u4e863D\u6253\u5370\u7684\u6700\u5927\u6548\u7387\uff0c\u800c\u8fd9\u4e9b\u9576\u5d4c\u7684\u9762\u677f\u5c06\u5149\u7ebf\u5f15\u5165\u7a7a\u95f4\u5185\u90e8\uff0c\u4e14\u4fdd\u6301\u4e86\u5185\u90e8\u826f\u597d\u7684\u901a\u98ce\u3002\u5f53\u591c\u5e55\u964d\u4e34\uff0c\u6cbf\u7740\u529b\u573a\u6a21\u5f0f\u6392\u5217\u7684\u7ebf\u6027\u7167\u660e\u88c5\u7f6e\u4f1a\u5728\u6b64\u65f6\u4ea7\u751f\u67d4\u548c\u7684\u5149\u70b9\u4eae\u5ba4\u5185\u7a7a\u95f4\u3002<\/p>\n

The points of which all the field lines emerge from the center where the supporting pipes are grounded, forming funicular touch-points, around which seating areas are allocated.\u00a0At the center, desert trees and shrubs are planted to regulate the atmosphere of the interior. These funnels also act as \u2018light-wells\u2019 capturing natural daylight and channeling it into the space.<\/p>\n

The panels making up the outer shell are tessellated for maximum efficiency for 3D printing. These tessellated panels filter light into the space while ensuring a well ventilated interior.\u00a0At night, linear lighting fixtures that are aligned along the force field patterns, create a gentle ambient lighting within the interior.<\/p>\n

The Desert Pavilion is the outcome of combining ideas from the site with current building technologies.\u00a0The structure is designed to form a space of shade from the heat of the desert during the day, and a place of celebration, storytelling and rest, at night.\u00a0It serves as a welcoming hospitable shelter for today and a case study for inhabiting the arid landscapes of Mars in the future.<\/p>\n
