Walker Warner Architects<\/strong><\/a>\uff1aFlowers\u2019 new guest experience breathes new life into a cherished local landmark to become a destination resort-style estate dedicated to the celebration of wine, food, and the natural landscape. Located minutes from downtown Healdsburg, in the heart of Russian River Valley, and originally built as a winery in the mid-70s, the facilities on this 15.5 acre estate had deteriorated and become outdated. Long known for its rustic charm and authentic connection to nature, the site held promise. By coincidence, Flowers Vineyard & Winery was looking for a venue to showcase their sustainably produced wines within a setting that expressed their nature-based ethos. Opportunity met serendipity to become a perfect union of context and intent, and a home for Flowers\u2019 hospitality house.<\/p>\n

The challenge was how to evolve the existing collection of facilities and preserve the natural legacy while ensuring that the venue could meet the expectations of today and become a destination in its own right. \u201cOur approach was deceptively simple,\u201d notes Brooks Walker, principal at Walker Warner Architects. \u201cLet nature dominate and use architecture to frame the experience. Ultimately, it\u2019s about the experience of this place.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u9057\u5740\u5750\u843d\u5728\u4e00\u7247\u7ea2\u6728\u6797\u4e2d\uff0c\u867d\u5982\u6b64\uff0c\u4f46\u5efa\u7b51\u4e0e\u5468\u56f4\u81ea\u7136\u7684\u8054\u7cfb\u7a0b\u5ea6\u5374\u5f88\u4f4e\u3002\u9488\u5bf9\u4e8e\u6b64\uff0c\u8bbe\u8ba1\u5e08\u4eec\u4fbf\u60f3\u8981\u627e\u5230\u5c06\u6e38\u5ba2\u91cd\u65b0\u63a5\u89e6\u5230\u98ce\u666f\u7684\u65b9\u6cd5\uff0c\u540c\u65f6\u6784\u60f3\u7528\u4e00\u7cfb\u5217\u7b80\u7ea6\u5de5\u4e1a\u98ce\u5143\u7d20\u6765\u8bbe\u8ba1\u573a\u5730\u3002\u6709\u4e86\u5bf9\u8be5\u9057\u5740\u7684\u5b9a\u4f4d\u6295\u8d44\uff0c\u8fd9\u6b21\u632f\u5174\u4e4b\u65c5\u4fbf\u5f00\u59cb\u4e86\u3002\u5728\u5efa\u6210\u7684\u65b0\u5740\u4e2d\uff0c\u4ece\u505c\u8f66\u573a\u8d70\u8fc7\u4e00\u6761\u5c0f\u8def\u5c31\u5230\u4e86\u6e38\u5ba2\u4e2d\u5fc3\u3002 \u5728\u4ed3\u5e93\u6539\u5efa\u7684\u6e38\u5ba2\u4e2d\u5fc3\u5185\uff0c\u8bbe\u6709\u5982\u4f55\u524d\u5f80\u5404\u4e2a\u5730\u70b9\u7684\u6307\u793a\u6807\u8bc6\uff0c\u4ee5\u53ca\u82b1\u4e4b\u5c4b\u5386\u53f2\u7684\u5c55\u793a\u533a\u3002 \u4ece\u5468\u56f4\u7ea2\u6728\u6797\u6811\u5f71\u4e2d\u6c72\u53d6\u5230\u7075\u611f\uff0c\u8bbe\u8ba1\u5e08\u5c06\u6e38\u5ba2\u4e2d\u5fc3\u4e0e\u5176\u4ed6\u7684\u5efa\u7b51\u8bbe\u8ba1\u6210\u6697\u8272\u7cfb\uff0c\u4ece\u800c\u4f7f\u666f\u89c2\u4ece\u5efa\u7b51\u7269\u4e2d\u8df3\u8131\u51fa\u6765\u6210\u4e3a\u76ee\u5149\u7684\u7126\u70b9\u3002<\/p>\n

Set within a redwood grove, the existing buildings were largely disconnected from their rich landscape. The strategy was to find ways to reconnect visitors to the landscape while reimagining what was a series of simple industrial buildings. This reinvigorated journey began by investing the site with a sense of orientation. New pathways lead visitors from the parking area to the updated visitor center. Previously a warehouse, the new hospitality house provides guests with an orientation to the site and introduces the Flowers\u2019 story. As with the other existing on-site structures, the hospitality house has been stained a shadowy black\u2014inspired by the deep shade of the surrounding redwood grove\u2014to help the buildings recede into the site and allow the landscape to become the focus.<\/p>\n

Remodeling the existing structures rather than building anew aligned with the Flowers\u2019 commitment to sustainability. The approach, which enabled most of the original structure to be \u2018recycled,\u2019 gave focus to the design efforts, elevating what was already present. Passive energy strategies\u2014low-cost, high-impact\u2014were maximized and included taking advantage of daylight (skylight and large windows) and shade (exterior wood slats serve as a veil while the surrounding redwood grove offers additional shade). Sustainability is reinforced through several large, monumental functional wood installations made of salvaged logs by artist Evan Shively.<\/p>\n

The interiors are bright thanks to bleached cypress siding, completing the yin-yang (dark-light) relationship of outside to inside. \u201cThe architectural expression is understated,\u201d notes Mike McCabe, principal at Walker Warner Architects. \u201cIt isn\u2019t about making a statement. It\u2019s about creating a place that can unify the values that are important to the Flowers\u2019 brand\u2014celebrating nature and local context with what\u2019s important to the site and the community.\u201d The desire, note the Flowers owners, was to \u201ccreate an environment where guests feel like they are entering our home, experiencing wines crafted without compromise and shared without pretension.\u201d<\/p>\n

Guests can experience a variety of intimate gatherings areas to savor Flowers\u2019 Sonoma Coast wines both inside as well as outside.
