Back in 1938, Hassell was founded in Australia by a small group of architects with a big vision. Over 80+ years, Hassell has worked on projects of every scale and type, from iconic public buildings to entire city precincts \u2013 and everything in between. Today, Hassell is a leading international design practice with studios in Asia, Australia, the United States, and the United Kingdom. In 2010, Hassell was awarded the largest architectural company in Australia and the 25th largest architectural company in the world.<\/p>\n

\u6211\u4ece\u534e\u5357\u7406\u5de5\u5927\u5b66\u5efa\u7b51\u7cfb\u6bd5\u4e1a\uff0c\u540e\u5230\u8377\u5170\u4ee3\u5c14\u592b\u7279\u5927\u5b66\u5b66\u4e60\u57ce\u5e02\u8bbe\u8ba1\uff0c\u671f\u95f4\u8fd8\u5728\u5a01\u5c3c\u65af\u5efa\u7b51\u5b66\u9662\u8fdb\u884c\u4e86\u4e00\u6bb5\u65f6\u95f4\u7684\u4ea4\u6362\u5b66\u4e60\u3002\u7855\u58eb\u6bd5\u4e1a\u540e\u6211\u5728\u90fd\u67cf\u6797\u5de5\u4f5c\u591a\u5e74\u540e\u4e8e2011\u5e74\u56de\u5230\u4e0a\u6d77\u52a0\u5165Hassell\u3002<\/p>\n

\u8fd9\u6837\u7684\u7ecf\u5386\u8ba9\u6211\u5bf9\u57ce\u5e02\u573a\u6240\u7684\u591a\u5143\u6027\u975e\u5e38\u654f\u611f\uff0c\u9488\u5bf9\u9879\u76ee\u4f1a\u901a\u8fc7\u7528\u5404\u79cd\u89c6\u89d2\u6765\u5ba1\u89c6\u3002\u6211\u8ba4\u4e3a\uff0c\u6210\u529f\u7684\u5efa\u7b51\u548c\u7247\u533a\u9700\u8981\u5e73\u8861\u591a\u4e2a\u7ef4\u5ea6\uff0c\u5305\u62ec\u5f00\u53d1\u8fd0\u8425\u3001\u4f7f\u7528\u8005\u7684\u4f53\u9a8c\u3001\u57ce\u5e02\u73af\u5883\u7684\u9700\u6c42\u7b49\u7b49\u3002\u5f53\u7136\u8fd8\u6709\u6587\u5316\u7684\u5dee\u5f02\uff0c\u79bb\u5f00\u573a\u5730\u6587\u8109\u6765\u505a\u8bbe\u8ba1\uff0c\u5df2\u7ecf\u8bc1\u660e\u662f\u884c\u4e0d\u901a\u7684\u3002<\/p>\n

\u4f46\u65e0\u8bba\u5982\u4f55\uff0c\u4eba\u4f5c\u4e3a\u57ce\u5e02\u7a7a\u95f4\u7684\u7ec8\u7aef\u4f7f\u7528\u8005\uff0c\u4ed6\u4eec\u7684\u60c5\u7eea\u548c\u529f\u80fd\u9700\u6c42\u662f\u6211\u6700\u4e3a\u611f\u5174\u8da3\u7684\u3002\u800c\u5c31\u50cf\u6768-\u76d6\u5c14\u6240\u603b\u7ed3\u7684\uff0c\u9996\u5148\u662f\u4eba\uff0c\u518d\u5230\u573a\u6240\u7a7a\u95f4\uff0c\u6700\u540e\u624d\u662f\u5efa\u7b51\uff0c\u800c\u4e0d\u80fd\u672c\u672b\u5012\u7f6e\u3002<\/p>\n

I joined Hassell 2011 after moving to Shanghai from Dublin where I had been working for a few years after my graduation from Delft University of Technology in Netherlands. I had obtained a master degree in urban design and during my time there, I also went to the Universit\u00e0 IUAV di Venezia in Italy as an exchange student. The very starting point of my design journey was a bachelor degree of architecture at the South China University of Technology.<\/p>\n

If I had to summarise my approach to project work, I would say I believe successful buildings and precincts are about balancing various aspects \u2013 operations, user experience, commercial goals and requirements from the urban environment. And cultural specifities of each context play a huge role and need to be factored in as well \u2013 we know that design that doesn\u2019t take the site\u2019s context into central consideration is unsuccessful. This is not just my approach, but the fundamental way in how we approach every project at Hassell.<\/p>\n

I\u2019m always thinking about the humans who will be the end users of any of the spaces I and our team design \u2013 their functional and emotional needs. This is actually the most interesting part of design to me. As Jan Gehl famously said: \u201cFirst life, then spaces, then buildings \u2013 the other way around never works.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u5bf9\u6211\u6765\u8bf4\uff0c\u6bcf\u4e00\u4e2a\u65b0\u7684\u9879\u76ee\u90fd\u5e26\u6765\u5168\u65b0\u7684\u6311\u6218\uff1a \u4e0d\u540c\u7684\u573a\u5730\u3001\u4e1a\u4e3b\u3001\u5408\u4f5c\u65b9\u5bf9\u9879\u76ee\u90fd\u6709\u4e0d\u540c\u7684\u671f\u5f85\uff0c\u6211\u4eec\u4e3a\u6b64\u7ec4\u7ec7\u7684\u5185\u90e8\u56e2\u961f\u4e5f\u4e0d\u4e00\u6837\u3002\u5728\u4e2d\u56fd\u793e\u4f1a\u7ecf\u6d4e\u53d1\u5c55\u8fc5\u901f\uff0c\u4eba\u4eec\u5bf9\u573a\u6240\u7684\u8981\u6c42\u662f\u65e5\u65b0\u6708\u5f02\u7684\uff0c\u6211\u4eec\u65e0\u6cd5\u4e0d\u65ad\u5b66\u4e60\u3002\u6210\u529f\u7ecf\u9a8c\u65e0\u6cd5\u5b8c\u5168\u590d\u5236\uff0c\u8fd9\u8ba9\u6211\u5bf9\u6bcf\u4e2a\u5373\u5c06\u8981\u5f00\u59cb\u7684\u9879\u76ee\u90fd\u5145\u6ee1\u70ed\u60c5\u548c\u671f\u5f85\u3002<\/p>\n

Every project presents some sort of new challenge to me: sites are in different new locations, clients and collaborators have their own aspirations on projects and our approach at Hassell is to match the most relevant expertise and talent with every project. With the rapid economic and social development of China, people\u2019s demands on places are changing. We have to learn quickly as a successful experience can\u2019t necessarily be repeated, and we set a high standard for every project.<\/p>\n

\u6211\u4eec\u4e00\u76f4\u90fd\u5728\u63a2\u5bfb\u8fd9\u4e2a\u95ee\u9898\uff0c\u5c06\u6709\u9650\u7684\u7a7a\u95f4\u66f4\u53ef\u80fd\u7684\u8fd8\u7ed9\u81ea\u7136-\u771f\u7684\u81ea\u7136\uff0c\u4e0d\u662f\u76c6\u666f\u5f0f\u7684\u666f\u89c2\u3002\u8fd9\u9700\u8981\u771f\u6b63\u8f6c\u53d8\u4eba\u4eec\u5bf9\u4e8e\u201c\u81ea\u7136\u201d\u7684\u89c2\u5ff5\uff0c\u4ece\u7ba1\u7406\u89d2\u5ea6\u6765\u8bf4\uff0c\u81ea\u7136\u201c\u65e0\u5e8f\u4e14\u6742\u4e71\u7684\u201d\uff0c\u201c\u7ba1\u7406\u96be\u5ea6\u5f88\u5927\u201d\uff0c\u201c\u4e0e\u56fd\u9645\u57ce\u5e02\u7684\u9ad8\u7aef\u548c\u7cbe\u81f4\u5f62\u8c61\u4ea7\u751f\u51b2\u7a81\u201d\u3002\u6211\u60f3\u8bbe\u8ba1\u53ef\u4ee5\u6539\u53d8\u8fd9\u4e00\u5370\u8c61\uff0c\u540c\u65f6\u8ba9\u4eba\u4eec\u5728\u57ce\u5e02\u4e2d\u4f53\u9a8c\u771f\u6b63\u7684\u81ea\u7136\u3002<\/p>\n

We interviewed people living in different Shanghai districts, trying to understand what \u2018nature\u2019 means to them and their expectations for urban space. Over 85% of the respondents thought that Shanghai wasn\u2019t green enough and didn\u2019t feel that human-built parks feel like nature, because they seem detached from people and don\u2019t provide an immersive experience. They said they struggled to find spaces for a moment of escape from the busy city. We found that the design of these parks was actually keeping people away from people them.<\/p>\n

We are always exploring the question: how to restore real nature in limited spaces rather than building large scale potted landscapes for the city. This in part requires people changing their perception about what the word \u2018nature\u2019 means. From a management perspective, nature is \u2018disorderly chaotic, it\u2019s \u2018very hard to manage\u2019 and it somewhat disrupts the high-end image of an international city. My vision for designing urban public spaces is to change these perceptions and enable more natural spaces for city people.<\/p>\n

What are your thoughts on the recent prevailing \u2018formalism of designing for exemplar zones\u2019? Do you think landscape architecture is science or art? In China, what specific aspect of landscape design should we be more aware of? <\/strong><\/p>\n

\u6211\u8ba4\u4e3a\u5f53\u666f\u89c2\u5b66\u79d1\u653e\u5230\u57ce\u5e02\u7684\u5c42\u9762\u4e0a\u6765\u770b\u5f85\u65f6\uff0c\u4f1a\u66f4\u52a0\u4f53\u73b0\u5176\u7efc\u5408\u548c\u591a\u5143\u6027\u3002\u597d\u7684\u666f\u89c2\u5851\u9020\u9700\u8981\u6ee1\u8db3\u529f\u80fd\u7684\u9700\u6c42\uff0c\u57ce\u5e02\u53d1\u5c55\u613f\u666f\u7684\u9700\u6c42\uff0c\u4e5f\u8981\u6ee1\u8db3\u5f53\u4ee3\u57ce\u5e02\u5c45\u6c11\u5bf9\u7f8e\u611f\u7684\u9700\u6c42\u3002\u79d1\u5b66\u548c\u827a\u672f\u90fd\u53ef\u4ee5\u662f\u666f\u89c2\u5851\u9020\u7684\u5176\u4e2d\u7684\u4e00\u4e2a\u5c42\u9762\uff0c\u4ece\u666f\u89c2\u7684\u5851\u9020\u89d2\u5ea6\u6765\u8bf4\uff0c\u653f\u5e9c\u3001\u5f00\u53d1\u5546\u3001\u8bbe\u8ba1\u5e08\u548c\u7a7a\u95f4\u4f7f\u7528\u8005\u7684\u76f8\u4e92\u5f71\u54cd\u5f62\u6210\u4e00\u4e2a\u5efa\u8bbe\u5468\u671f\u7684\u95ed\u73af\u63a8\u52a8\u7740\u4e13\u4e1a\u7684\u53d1\u5c55\u3002<\/p>\n

\u5728\u4e2d\u56fd\uff0c\u968f\u7740\u4eba\u4eec\u5bf9\u751f\u6d3b\u54c1\u8d28\u548c\u4f11\u95f2\u7684\u591a\u5143\u8981\u6c42\uff0c\u5bf9\u4f18\u8d28\u7684\u516c\u5171\u666f\u89c2\u7a7a\u95f4\u7684\u8981\u6c42\u4e5f\u8d8a\u6765\u8d8a\u9ad8\uff0c\u6240\u4ee5\u8fd1\u5e74\u6765\uff0c\u8d8a\u6765\u8d8a\u591a\u7684\u4f18\u79c0\u516c\u5171\u666f\u89c2\u8bbe\u8ba1\u9879\u76ee\u5f97\u5230\u5448\u73b0\u3002\u6bd4\u5982Hassell\u53c2\u4e0e\u7684\u9ec4\u6d66\u6c5f\u6ee8\u6c5f\u8d2f\u901a\u548c\u516c\u5171\u7a7a\u95f4\u6253\u9020\u4f53\u73b0\u4e86\u666f\u89c2\u63d0\u5347\u5bf9\u57ce\u5e02\u751f\u6d3b\u54c1\u8d28\u63d0\u5347\u5e26\u6765\u7684\u91cd\u5927\u4f5c\u7528\u3002\u5728\u8bbe\u8ba1\u8fc7\u7a0b\u4e2d\u7684\u516c\u5171\u53c2\u4e0e\u7684\u7a0b\u5ea6\u4e5f\u8d8a\u6765\u8d8a\u9ad8\uff0c\u8fd9\u4e9b\u53d8\u5316\u4f1a\u5f88\u5927\u7a0b\u5ea6\u4e0a\u6539\u53d8\u4f60\u6240\u63d0\u5230\u7684\u201c\u5f62\u5f0f\u4e3b\u4e49\u201d\uff0c\u6700\u7ec8\u57ce\u5e02\u7a7a\u95f4\u9700\u8981\u88ab\u4f7f\u7528\u3001\u88ab\u53c2\u4e0e\u3001\u88ab\u559c\u7231\u3002<\/p>\n

I think landscape architecture should be considered at a city level. The intrinsic value of landscape architecture is comprehensive and diversified. Great landscape design responds to the requirements from a functional level, it should be a vision of development as well as meeting aesthetic needs. Science and arts are different aspects of landscape shaping. Government, developers, architects and end users influence each other and together they form an enclosed loop over a project period that promotes the development of landscape architecture.<\/p>\n

In China, with the growth of demand for quality lifestyle and diversified leisure requirements, people expect more quality public spaces. In recent years, we have seen many great public landscape projects. For example, the Huangpu East Bank Urban Forest and the North Bund Waterfront projects designed by Hassell show us how landscape can hugely lift the quality of life in cities. And during the design process, we incorporated a high level of public involvement too. So I think the \u2018formalism\u2019 you mentioned won\u2019t survive for too long. Ultimately, urban spaces will be proved successful if people use them, engage with them, love them and protect them.<\/p>\n

\u6211\u4eec\u5e0c\u671b\u66f4\u591a\u7684\u53c2\u4e0e\u5230\u6211\u4eec\u6240\u5c45\u4f4f\u7684\u57ce\u5e02\u53ca\u5468\u8fb9\u7684\u57ce\u5e02\u5efa\u8bbe\u4e2d\uff0c\u6240\u4ee5\u6211\u4eec\u5728\u4e2d\u56fd\u7684\u5927\u90e8\u5206\u7684\u4e1a\u52a1\u90fd\u96c6\u4e2d\u5728\u51e0\u4e2a\u5927\u7684\u57ce\u5e02\u7fa4\u3002\u6211\u4eec\u5bf9\u8fd9\u4e9b\u57ce\u5e02\u7684\u4fe1\u606f\u638c\u63e1\u66f4\u5168\u9762\uff0c\u5bf9\u57ce\u5e02\u73af\u5883\u4e5f\u6709\u66f4\u591a\u76f4\u89c2\u6df1\u523b\u7684\u7406\u89e3\u3002<\/p>\n

Most of our business in China is in and around the big city clusters, particularly the cities we live and have a presence in. We have more all-round information about these areas and a deeper and direct understanding of the urban context.<\/p>\n

Our focus on these city clusters in China is partly a response to complicated and acute problems that need immediate responses. For example, in Shenzhen, we have been involved in the International Affordable Housing Competition. The design we delivered was trying to address the affordability issue which is becoming increasingly pressing around the world. And the Panda Land Masterplan project in Chengdu focuses on how master planning can support biodiversity by designing for \u200b\u2018umbrella species\u2019.<\/p>\n

\u4e00\u4e2a\u9879\u76ee\u7684\u6982\u5ff5\u8bbe\u8ba1\u5230\u6700\u7ec8\u5efa\u6210\u9700\u8981\u6574\u4e2a\u5468\u671f\u7684\u53c2\u4e0e\u8005\u7684\u534f\u4f5c\u3002\u5728\u5efa\u8bbe\u5468\u671f\u4e2d\uff0c\u51b3\u7b56\u6761\u4ef6\u53d8\u5316\u5e26\u6765\u8bbe\u8ba1\u53d8\u66f4\uff0c\u5728\u4efb\u4f55\u4e00\u4e2a\u56fd\u5bb6\u90fd\u662f\u5b58\u5728\u7684\u3002<\/p>\n

From concept to completion, the entire life circle of a project requires collaboration between many different parties. \u6211\u8ba4\u4e3a\u56fd\u5185\u8bbe\u8ba1\u884c\u4e1a\u7684\u5de5\u4e1a\u5316\u548c\u4e13\u4e1a\u5316\u7a0b\u5ea6\u90fd\u5728\u63d0\u9ad8\u3002\u4e0a\u6d77\u4ee5\u5185\u7684\u4e3b\u8981\u5927\u57ce\u5e02\u7387\u5148\u63d0\u51fa\u4e16\u754c\u7ea7\u90fd\u5e02\u7684\u76ee\u6807\uff0c\u5728\u4e0b\u4e00\u4e2a\u5341\u5230\u5341\u4e94\u5e74\u7684\u5efa\u8bbe\u5468\u671f\u4e2d\u6765\u5b9e\u73b0\u3002<\/p>\n

I can see that that the design industry is going from strength to strength rapidly all across China. All the big cities, including Shanghai, are striving to become work class metropolises within the next 10-15 years.<\/p>\n

To some extent, China has a strong capability in delivering super-large scale projects. The efforts are visible to local citizens and the visitors. People are now enjoying improved urban spaces and liveability \u2013 such as more accessible waterfront spaces, park cities and all sorts of urban renewal projects taking place. Other countries that went through economic growth and improving quality of life earlier are setting higher standards for environmental sustainability, although China has made incredibly rapid progress in this area too.<\/p>\n

China\u2019s cities have been experiencing rapid development for decades, going through repositioning and urban renewal. An increasing number of projects are integrating the idea of resilience, allowing recovery and regeneration of the natural ecosystem and the underutilised urban spaces.<\/p>\n

People expect urban spaces to be both rooted in the local, but of an international standard. They want world-class standards of quality of life and liveability with locally relevant features interwoven to create something truly unique.<\/p>\n

Let\u2019s take the Huangpu East Bank Urban Forest as an example. Our design concept is bold – to plant a forest of two million trees along the waterfront: one for each child so that as they grow up, they witness the development of Shanghai with the flourishing of this urban forest.<\/p>\n

Another example is the Beijing Tongzhou Green Central Forest Park which opened to the public over the National Holiday. Hassell proposed a concept centred around \u201824 seasons\u2019, corresponding to 24 solar terms of the traditional Chinese calendar. The park was divided up into just as many parts that then play to these seasons. We curated experience journeys and shaped the place with carefully selected plants to pass the story of nature and culture on to the next generations.
