PLACE Laboratory<\/strong><\/a>\uff1aBackground<\/strong> – The Midland Railway Workshops comprise what is considered the most important group of early twentieth century industrial buildings in Western Australia. From 1904 to 1994 the Workshops were the largest industrial workshops in the State with a highly skilled and diverse workforce of up to 3,500 people including tradesmen, technicians, engineers, drafts people, designers, planners and administrators whose collective skills and labour have made a significant contribution to the development of Western Australia.<\/p>\n

The Shunting Yards is largest and most significant open space within the Railway Workshop precinct and is an important industrial landscape which, in addition to the cultural heritage significance it has as a pivotal part of the function of the Workshops being the main area for manoeuvring locomotives used around the State in and out of the Workshops for manufacturing and servicing, was also the site of ceremonies as well as social, worker and political gatherings.<\/p>\n

The challenge of reinvigorating the Workshops has involved seventeen years of work by the MRA and a host of heritage specialists, environmental scientists, planners, landscape architects and engineers. Railway Square is significant as the largest public open space delivered within Workshops, a landmark industrial landscape project unique in Western Australia and a benchmark project for the delivery of public space in a post-industrial setting.<\/p>\n

\u94c1\u8def\u5e7f\u573a\u6240\u5728\u7684\u8c03\u8f66\u573a\u662f\u8fd9\u4e2a\u5730\u65b9\u7684\u4e3b\u8981\u7279\u8272\u548c\u5386\u53f2\u8bb0\u5fc6\u533a\uff0c\u5373\u64cd\u7eb5\u673a\u8f66\u3001\u5de5\u4eba\u96c6\u4f1a\u3001\u4e3e\u884c\u4eea\u5f0f\u548c\u653f\u6cbb\u96c6\u4f1a\u7684\u4e3b\u8981\u533a\u57df\u3002\u4f5c\u4e3a\u8fd9\u6837\u4e00\u4e2a\u5177\u6709\u7279\u6b8a\u610f\u4e49\u7684\u5730\u65b9\uff0c\u5b83\u5c06\u88ab\u4fdd\u7559\u4e3a\u4e00\u4e2a\u5f00\u653e\u7684\u516c\u5171\u7a7a\u95f4\uff0c\u7528\u4e8e\u8be0\u91ca\u548c\u9882\u626c\u8be5\u5730\u7684\u5386\u53f2\uff0c\u5e76\u4e3a\u7c73\u5fb7\u5170\u548c\u4e1c\u90e8\u5730\u533a\u63d0\u4f9b\u4e00\u4e2a\u4e3b\u8981\u7684\u5e02\u6c11\u805a\u4f1a\u548c\u8282\u5e86\u7a7a\u95f4\u3002<\/p>\n

PLACE Laboratory\u901a\u8fc7\u5c06\u91cd\u578b\u94c1\u8def\u57fa\u7840\u8bbe\u65bd\u6539\u9020\u6210\u65b0\u7684\u793e\u4f1a\u57fa\u7840\u8bbe\u65bd\u8be0\u91ca\u573a\u5730\u7684\u539f\u6709\u7528\u9014\uff0c\u5c06\u8be5\u7a7a\u95f4\u66f4\u65b0\u6210\u4e86\u4e00\u4e2a\u65b0\u7684\u73b0\u4ee3\u516c\u5171\u7a7a\u95f4\u3002\u5728MRA\u548cPLACE Laboratory\u8bbe\u8ba1\u56e2\u961f\u7684\u5171\u540c\u6307\u5bfc\u4e0b\uff0c\u94c1\u8def\u5e7f\u573a\u5f62\u6210\u4e86\u4e00\u4e2a\u88ab\u9910\u9986\u3001\u5496\u5561\u9986\u3001\u9152\u5e97\u3001\u516c\u5bd3\u548c\u7ffb\u65b0\u7684\u9057\u5740\u4fdd\u62a4\u5efa\u7b51\u5305\u56f4\u7684\u516c\u5171\u7a7a\u95f4\u76ee\u7684\u5730\uff0c\u6b63\u9010\u6e10\u6210\u4e3a\u7c73\u5fb7\u5170\u7684\u4e00\u4e2a\u65b0\u7684\u57ce\u5e02\u4e2d\u5fc3\u3002<\/p>\n

Railway Square is a new public square constructed in the former Midland Railway Workshops. The Workshops are a cluster of late 19th century industrial buildings undergoing thoughtful restoration to create an urban village for a new era. Retaining its authentic, industrial feel, the new urban village will be home to a range of residential, commercial, health, education, entertainment and creative industry uses.<\/p>\n

Key to the character and history of the site was the Shunting Yards, the site of the Railway Square, which was the main area for manoeuvring locomotives, worker gatherings, ceremonies and political gatherings. The Shunting Yards have been identified as a place of exceptional significance and are to be preserved as an open public space that will interpret and celebrate the history of the site and provide a major civic gathering and festival space for Midland and the eastern region.<\/p>\n

The space has been designed as a new contemporary public space by PLACE Laboratory, interpreting the sites former use by transforming heavy rail infrastructure into new social infrastructure. Under the guidance of the MRA and a design team lead by PLACE Laboratory, Railway Square is being transformed into a new civic heart for Midland, providing a destination public space surrounded by restaurants, cafes, a hotel, apartments and refurbished heritage listed buildings.<\/p>\n

\u5e7f\u573a\u8bbe\u8ba1\u4ee5\u7b2c\u4e00\u5386\u53f2\u8857\u533a\u4e3a\u80cc\u666f\uff0c\u901a\u8fc7\u5de5\u4e1a\u6750\u6599\u3001\u5b9a\u5236\u94c1\u8def\u5bb6\u5177\u3001\u827a\u672f\u54c1\u548c\u8d2f\u7a7f\u7a7a\u95f4\u7684\u8bf4\u660e\u5f0f\u94c1\u8def\u7ebf\u6765\u8be0\u91ca\u8be5\u7a7a\u95f4\u7684\u539f\u6709\u7528\u9014\u3002\u5176\u4e2d\u94c1\u8def\u7ebf\u7684\u8bbe\u8ba1\u4e3b\u8981\u5305\u542b\u4ee5\u4e0b\u51e0\u9879:<\/p>\n

\n\u793e\u4ea4\u7ebf\uff1a\u5305\u542b\u4e00\u7cfb\u5217\u7528\u4e8e\u5750\u3001\u8eba\u3001\u73a9\u548c\u793e\u4ea4\u7684\u94c1\u8def\u5bb6\u5177\uff0c\u751f\u52a8\u5730\u518d\u73b0\u4e86\u524d\u5de5\u4eba\u53ca\u5176\u5bb6\u5ead\u7684\u4e30\u5bcc\u793e\u4f1a\u5386\u53f2\u3002
\n\u6c34\u666f\u7ebf\uff1a\u4e00\u6761\u542b\u7ebf\u6027\u55b7\u96fe\u548c\u7167\u660e\u7684\u666f\u89c2\u7ebf\uff0c\u65e8\u5728\u8868\u73b0\u84b8\u6c7d\u673a\u7684\u5386\u53f2\u548c\u573a\u5730\u4e0a\u7684\u706b\u8f66\u6d3b\u52a8\u3002

\n\u9690\u6ca1\u7ebf\uff1a\u4e00\u6761\u9690\u6ca1\u5728\u5730\u4e0b\u7684\u94c1\u8def\u7ebf\uff0c\u8868\u73b0\u4e8620\u4e16\u7eaa90\u5e74\u4ee3\u5de5\u5382\u7684\u8870\u843d\u4ee5\u53ca\u540e\u9762\u91cd\u65b0\u5f00\u53d1\u7528\u4e8e\u65b0\u793e\u533a\u3002<\/p>\n

Set against the historical backdrop of Block One, the design of Railway Square interprets the former use of the space through industrial materials, custom rail furniture, artworks and interpretative rail lines that run through the space. The rail lines have been designed to tell the stories of the site:<\/p>\n

> The Live Line is an existing live railway line that is integrated into the design of the square to allow trains to access the site and workshops during special events.
\n> The Social Line brings to life the rich social history of the former workers and their families and includes a line of rail furniture for sitting, lounging, playing and meeting.
\n> The Water Line is a linear misting and lighting feature that references the history of steam engines and movement of trains through the site.
\n> The History Line consists of an interpretive artwork set between the rail tracks that tells the history of state wide rail connections from the site and the shunting of the rail carts on the site.
\n> The Lost Line is a rail line that disappears into the ground interpreting the decline of the workshops in the 1990s and the repurposing of the site for a new community.<\/p>\n

\u666f\u89c2\u55b7\u96fe\u5df2\u7ecf\u6210\u4e3a\u4e86\u5e7f\u573a\u5185\u7684\u4e00\u4e2a\u7edf\u4e00\u6027\u5143\u7d20\u3002\u4e24\u6761130\u6beb\u7c73\u5bbd\u7684\u6392\u6c34\u6c9f\u4e0e\u5e26\u8bf4\u660e\u529f\u80fd\u7684\u94c1\u8f68\u5bf9\u9f50\uff0c\u7528\u4e8e\u50a8\u6c34\u548c\u653e\u7f6e\u7167\u660e\u57fa\u7840\u8bbe\u65bd\u3002\u6e20\u9053\u6392\u6c34\u7cfb\u7edf\u4e0e\u6c11\u7528\u6392\u6c34\u7cfb\u7edf\u76f8\u7ed3\u5408\uff0c\u5229\u7528\u6574\u4e2a\u573a\u5730\u7684\u6e20\u9053\u6392\u6c34\u7cfb\u7edf\uff0c\u4e3a\u6c34\u666f\u63d0\u4f9b\u5b89\u5168\u3001\u53ef\u901a\u884c\u7684\u575a\u56fa\u5916\u89c2\u3002<\/p>\n

One of the unique design elements within the project is the custom designed Water Line mist-scape.<\/p>\n

The Water Line has been designed to interpret the movement and colours of the site as well as introducing a water play element within the project. The Water Line is a mist-scape that projects a fine water mist that recalls the smoke, steam and movement that was previously found on site. In addition the mist also provides a canvas for coloured light projections and illuminations.<\/p>\n

The fogging water feature has been designed as an integrated element within the plaza. Two 130mm wide channel drains are aligned with the interpretive rail tracks to house the water and lighting infrastructure. The channel drain ties-in with the civil drainage scheme, which utilises channel drains throughout the site and provide a secure, trafficable and robust housing for the water feature.<\/p>\n
