For over two decades, SWA has worked with local government and leading developers to create Shenzhen\u2019s world class waterfront parks including Shenzhen Bay Park, OCT Bay, She Kou Park and Prince Bay. These parks address the issues of ecological vitality while meeting the growing demand for public space and enhanced urban living. Our latest work, OCT Baoan Waterfront Culture park, has redefined a unique coastal experience by integrating a city park with an entertainment and leisure destination, adding a significant mark to our continuous endeavor in Shenzhen\u2019s waterfront public space.<\/p>\n

Baoan Waterfront Culture park lies along the interface of the city and its inner harbor, facing the ocean scenery of Qianhai Bay on the south side and backed by the rapidly developing Qianhai regional center in the north. Urban life and natural ecology meet in the park. The central axis of the civic core, which connects City Hall, the Library, Youth Center, terminates here with the Performing Arts Center, bringing vitality and popularity of the city into this coastal space. Two commercial complexes are built on each side of the center; the park wraps around and above the buildings and to create a contiguous carpet of green.<\/p>\n

With the main axis of Qianhai in the center, the entire park is divided into three pockets: the cultural pocket, the play pocket, and the experience pocket. The cultural pocket is in the center of the park, with the Performing Arts Center as the focal point, a central water plaza and a bay plaza are created for gathering and celebrations. The play pocket is on the west side with all kinds of recreational activities in: resting on the beach, having fun in the playground, racing in the skate park, overlooking on the waterfront, and wandering in the magic forest\u2026 Everyone can find their place. The experience pocket in the east is the most active and dynamic area in the park, with various spatial layers in the pocket, people are able to explore between hills, forest, waters, terraces, shorelines, pavilions, and an iconic Ferris wheel, shifting between natural landscape and diverse sensory stimulations.<\/p>\n

\u90fd\u5e02\u751f\u6d3b\u548c\u81ea\u7136\u751f\u6001\u5728\u5b9d\u5b89\u516c\u56ed\u4ea4\u6c47, \u4eba\u4eec\u5bf9\u57ce\u5e02\u6ee8\u6d77\u751f\u6d3b\u7684\u5411\u5f80\u4e0e\u6e34\u671b\u5728\u8fd9\u91cc\u8fbe\u5230\u4e86\u9ad8\u6f6e\u3002\u516c\u56ed\u4f9d\u6d77\u800c\u5efa\uff0c\u4e0e\u6d77\u5171\u751f\uff0c\u6d77\u6d0b\u4e5f\u56e0\u6b64\u6210\u4e3a\u4e86\u6574\u4e2a\u516c\u56ed\u7684\u8bbe\u8ba1\u7075\u611f\u3002\u6f6e\u6da8\u6f6e\u843d\u7684\u97f5\u5f8b\u542f\u53d1\u4e86\u516c\u56ed\u6d41\u52a8\u7684\u7ebf\u6761\u8bed\u8a00\uff0c\u8fd9\u6837\u7684\u7ebf\u6761\u8bed\u8a00\u88ab\u5e7f\u6cdb\u8fd0\u7528\u5728\u516c\u56ed\u7684\u5730\u5f62\u3001\u6b65\u9053\u3001\u6c34\u4f53\u4ee5\u53ca\u6784\u7b51\u7269\u4e2d\uff0c\u6fc0\u53d1\u4e86\u573a\u5730\u7684\u6d41\u52a8\u611f\uff0c\u5c06\u57ce\u5e02\u4e0e\u6d77\u6d0b\u7684\u8bed\u8a00\u878d\u5408\u5728\u4e86\u8fd9\u6837\u4e00\u4e2a\u76f8\u4e92\u8054\u7cfb\u7684\u7a7a\u95f4\u4e2d\u3002<\/p>\n

Urban life and natural ecology meet at Baoan Park, and people’s aspirations and desires for urban coastal life reach their climax here. The park is built by the sea, lives with the sea, therefore the sea has become the prominent inspiration for the whole park design. The rhythms of tides inspired the flowing lines of the park\u2019s landforms, paths, waterways and sculptural elements, and the flowing motion create a sense of fluidity that blends the language of the city and that of the sea into an interconnected realm.<\/p>\n

\u8fd9\u6837\u7684\u6d41\u52a8\u611f\u5e76\u4e0d\u5c40\u9650\u4e8e\u5e73\u9762\u4e0a\u7684\u8868\u8fbe\uff0c\u4e5f\u88ab\u8fd0\u7528\u5230\u4e86\u4e09\u7ef4\u7a7a\u95f4\u4e2d\u3002\u5b83\u6a21\u7cca\u4e86\u666f\u89c2\u548c\u5efa\u7b51\u4e4b\u95f4\u7684\u8fb9\u754c\uff0c\u4e3a\u8bbe\u8ba1\u5e08\u5728\u5b9d\u5b89\u516c\u56ed\u4e2d\u5404\u79cd\u4e30\u5bcc\u7a7a\u95f4\u7684\u63a2\u7d22\u6253\u4e0b\u4e86\u57fa\u7840\u3002\u5c31\u5982\u6d77\u6d6a\u51b2\u5237\u8d77\u4f0f\u7684\u7901\u77f3\u4e00\u822c\uff0c\u8bbe\u8ba1\u5e08\u5728\u8fd9\u7247\u66fe\u7ecf\u5e73\u5766\u7684\u8352\u5730\u4e4b\u4e0a\u8425\u9020\u4e86\u8d77\u4f0f\u7684\u5c71\u4e18\u5f62\u6001\uff0c\u5e76\u4e0e\u6c34\u9053\u3001\u79cd\u690d\u3001\u82b1\u56ed\u3001\u5e7f\u573a\u7b49\u6709\u673a\u7ed3\u5408\uff0c\u6700\u5927\u5316\u4e30\u5bcc\u4e86\u516c\u56ed\u7684\u7a7a\u95f4\u4f53\u9a8c\u3002<\/p>\n

This flowing motion is more than a planar expression, it is also applied three-dimensionally. It blurs the boundary between landscape and architecture, providing great conditions for our innovative investigation of spaces. Like undulating reefs washed by waves, the designers created rolling land forms on this formerly flat barren land, and combined them with water features, groves, gardens, and plazas to maximize the spatial experience in the park.<\/p>\n

\u591a\u5c42\u6b21\u7684\u666f\u89c2\u4e0e\u5efa\u7b51\u76f8\u878d\u5408\uff0c\u4f7f\u516c\u56ed\u4e0e\u57ce\u5e02\u529f\u80fd\u4e0e\u8857\u9053\u751f\u6d3b\u7d27\u5bc6\u7ed3\u5408\u5728\u4e00\u8d77\uff0c\u591a\u5c42\u7a7a\u95f4\u8f6c\u5316\u4e3a\u591a\u79cd\u529f\u80fd\uff0c\u5f62\u6210\u66f4\u5b9c\u4eba\u3001\u66f4\u9ad8\u6548\u7684\u57ce\u5e02\u73af\u5883\u3002\u5728\u5c71\u6c34\u4e4b\u95f4\uff0c\u9910\u5385\u3001\u753b\u5eca\u4ee5\u53ca\u5404\u79cd\u8d2d\u7269\u573a\u6240\u63a9\u6620\u5176\u4e2d\uff0c\u505c\u8f66\u573a\u3001\u5730\u94c1\u7ad9\u7b49\u529f\u80fd\u7a7a\u95f4\u85cf\u533f\u5728\u4e0b\u3002\u4eba\u4eec\u53ef\u4ee5\u6cbf\u7740\u5761\u9053\u6765\u5230\u7a7a\u4e2d\u8d70\u5eca\u6b65\u5165\u5546\u4e1a\u8857\uff0c\u4e5f\u53ef\u4ee5\u5728\u5c4b\u9876\u82b1\u56ed\u4e0a\u8fdc\u773a\u5927\u6d77\u3002\u5efa\u7b51\u548c\u666f\u89c2\u8d77\u4f0f\u4ea4\u7ec7\uff0c\u57ce\u5e02\u7684\u6d3b\u529b\u4e5f\u5728\u516c\u56ed\u4e0e\u5efa\u7b51\u4e4b\u95f4\u6d41\u52a8\u4e0e\u8513\u5ef6\u3002<\/p>\n

Such multi-layered landscape blends with the building, bringing the park, urban functions and street life close together, transforming this multi-layered space into a multi-functional one, and creates a more pleasant and efficient urban environment as a result. Tucked between the hills and waterways lie restaurants, galleries, and all kinds of shopping venues, while parking lots, subway stations and other functional spaces are hidden underneath. People can walk along the ramp to the sky corridor and further into the shopping street, or they can overlook the sea from the rooftop garden. The architecture and landscape are intertwined, and the vitality of the city flows and spreads between the park and the park-wrapped building.<\/p>\n

The rich topography, vast shorelines and tropical vegetation of Guangdong have had a profound impact on the park. As the park lies between the vast scenery of the city skyline and sea, representing a characteristic landscape of Shenzhen, the designers created a collage of archetypal Guangdong landscapes in response to the park\u2019s unique local context. Craggy shoreline, sand beach, tropical forest, rolling meadow, promontory, terraced farmland, wetlands, meandering streams and reflecting ponds were reinterpreted into a series of \u201cparks within a park\u201d. By referencing cultural landscape, the \u2018Marine Shanshui\u2019 was created\uff0cand these imaginary scenes reflect the essence of the region with a decidedly urban flare.<\/p>\n

This \u201c Marine Shanshui\u201d have redefined the relationship between people and water in Shenzhen, a city of mountains and the sea. Here in Baoan Park, water is not only something to be appreciated and looked at, but also something to engage and enjoy. On the one hand, the designers made full use of the spectacular “Bay Water” in Qianhai Bay, created an open waterfront and viewing spaces so that people can enjoy the unique and magnificent view of the bay in different areas and from different angles in the park; on the other hand, a \u201cPlay Water\u201d was created inside the site. The designers introduced a “water ribbon” to maximize the water-friendly interface, meanwhile combining different functions to give characters to the water. With these two types of water in the site, the water in the park is not only scenic, but also interactive, accessible, and thematic.<\/p>\n

In addition to the introduction of the \u201cwater ribbon\u201d, the designers also have made different kinds of attempts to further enrich the water experience in Baoan Park. In the central celebration water square, in order to make people fully experience the joy of water when the water show is not open, a circular interactive fountain were set up in the square. The heights and lighting are constantly changing to produce various floating and rotating effects. maximizing people’s sensory experience with water all the time, reflecting both the marine inspiration of the park and the spinning Ferris wheel in the distance. In addition, the designers set up highly interactive water features combined with resting areas, which are havens for children. Children are exploring the water in all aspects in the front, while parents are resting in the elegantly shaped pavilion, such scenes are the best notes about the intimate relationship between people and water in tropical Shenzhen.<\/p>\n

Beside such a locally derived \u2018Marine Shanshui\u2019 base, the designers were also committed to embrace the open, trendy and innovative urban culture of Shenzhen in Bao An Park. From the very beginning of the design, a \u2018O Ring\u2019 Ferris wheel was proposed in the most eye-catching position of the park\u2019s waterfront as an icon to represent the Qianhai Bay as well as the city culture. The Ferris wheel has always been an integral part of the design, echoing the views from all parts of the park; and after its completion, it keeps bringing constant flows of vitality and popularity to the park. Sitting in this spinning wheel, people are able to enjoy the prosperous scenery of Shenzhen City as well as the natural beauty of Qianhai Bay, experiencing the unique city charm of Shenzhen.<\/p>\n

With the Ferris wheel as a centerpiece of the city\u2019s culture, designers also proposed other nine distinctive structures within the park, and these icons together further enhance the attractiveness of the park\u2019s shoreline. The structures are inspired by coral, clams and squid. By carefully studying the forms and motions of these ocean creatures, designers artistically abstracted them into pavilions, and integrated them into the park\u2019s key areas to provide perfect resting spaces for people. As one of the many highlights in the park, the designers worked closely with the structural units to ensure that the elegant forms of these structures were perfectly rendered. These charming structures are not only a symbol of Shenzhen\u2019s open and diverse culture, but also a throwback to the ocean culture of the city.<\/p>\n

As people gradually walk from the building into the park, the designers\u2019 carefully constructed \u201cmarine shanshui\u201d, the city’s new landmark “Bay Light” Ferris wheel, the symbolic structures of the ocean, the coastline, and the Performing Arts Center plaza are panoramically under their eyes. Since its completion, Baoan Park has been well received and welcomed by all walks of life. It has not only become a preferable place for people’s daily recreational activities, but also a hot check-in destination for citizens and tourists from far and near. We have discovered Baoan Park in various TV shows, advertisements, and social medias, and it is nice to see that people are using the park in different ways and appreciating the park from different angles. This is the most successful presentation of Shenzhen\u2019s open and diverse culture. We are delighted to find that the new paradigm of urban coastal living that SWA Shanghai proposed, which integrates culture, commerce, entertainment and public services in one park, has been perfectly practiced in Baoan Park.<\/p>\n
