Cumulus Studio<\/b><\/strong><\/a>\uff1aLocated on the scenic drive along Tasmania\u2019s East Coast, the new Devil\u2019s Corner Cellar Door and Lookout sits within one of Tasmania\u2019s largest vineyards, with a panoramic view over the Freycinet Peninsula. Reopened in December 2015, this project for Brown Brothers seeks to amplify the experience of this iconic view to create a new tourism experience on the East Coast of Tasmania.<\/p>\n

Originally a small demountable building, the Cellar Door has been extended and expanded, paired with a lookout and complimentary food experiences, providing a backdrop for seasonal events. The Cellar Door and Lookout were designed as a loose collection of timber clad buildings that, through similar aesthetic and material treatment, form a modern interpretation of traditional farm \/ rural settlement that gather over time.<\/p>\n

The lookout element is a critical component of the design, not only in providing a visual signifier for the settlement but also as a way of interpreting the landscape from which the Devil\u2019s Corner wines originate. In the same way that an appreciation of wine can be gained through understanding its subtleties and varying \u2018in-mouth\u2019 sensations, there are many ways landscape can be appreciated. The lookout plays with this idea. The three distinct spaces reference different and unique views of the site \u2013 firstly the SKY, then the HORIZON and lastly the TOWER which winds its way upward providing views to each of the compass points before culminating in an elevated and expansive view of the bay.<\/p>\n

\u94a2\u6750\u4f5c\u4e3a\u8be5\u9879\u76ee\u7684\u7406\u60f3\u6750\u6599\uff0c\u53ef\u4ee5\u5728\u573a\u5916\u9884\u5236\u5927\u91cf\u7ed3\u6784\uff0c\u4e3a\u504f\u8fdc\u5730\u533a\u89e3\u51b3\u4e86\u65f6\u95f4\u548c\u7269\u6d41\u7684\u96be\u9898\u3002\u6076\u9b54\u89d2\u9152\u5e84\u7684\u5efa\u7b51\u548c\u5854\u697c\u5e95\u5c42\u7ed3\u6784\u662f\u7531\u96c6\u88c5\u7bb1\u6539\u9020\u800c\u6210\u7684\uff0c\u4e4b\u6240\u4ee5\u9009\u62e9\u96c6\u88c5\u7bb1\uff0c\u4e0d\u4ec5\u662f\u56e0\u4e3a\u5b83\u4eec\u6613\u4e8e\u8fd0\u8f93\u7684\u6a21\u5757\u5316\u5c3a\u5bf8\uff0c\u8fd8\u56e0\u4e3a\u5b83\u4eec\u7684\u7ed3\u6784\u5b8c\u6574\u6027\u548c\u94a2\u6750\u56fa\u6709\u7684\u97e7\u6027\u548c\u5851\u6027\u3002\u9879\u76ee\u4e2d\u603b\u5171\u4f7f\u7528\u4e8610\u4e2a\u96c6\u88c5\u7bb1\u2014\u2014\u5176\u4e2d5\u4e2a\u5728\u77ad\u671b\u53f0\uff0c5\u4e2a\u5728\u5e02\u573a\u533a\u57df\u3002<\/p>\n

Steel was an ideal material for the project as it allowed for a large amount of structure to be prefabricated off-site, providing timing and logistics advantages for the remote location. The underlying structure of the buildings and tower for the Devil\u2019s Corner is made from repurposed and adapted shipping containers, chosen not only because of their easily transportable modular size, but also because of their structural integrity and steel’s inherent flexibility and ability to be modified. A total of 10 containers have been used – 5 in the lookout and 5 in the market area.<\/p>\n

\u96c6\u88c5\u7bb1\u7684\u6574\u4f53\u5f3a\u5ea6\u4f7f\u5176\u6210\u4e3a\u5efa\u9020\u77ad\u671b\u53f0\u7684\u6700\u4f73\u9009\u62e9\uff0c\u7279\u522b\u662f\u80fd\u591f\u5c06\u5efa\u7b51\u7ed3\u6784\u8fd0\u9001\u5230\u73b0\u573a\u5e76\u5feb\u901f\u5b89\u88c5\u3002\u6bcf\u4e2a\u96c6\u88c5\u7bb1\u90fd\u4ee5\u4e0d\u540c\u7684\u65b9\u5f0f\u8fdb\u884c\u4e86\u6539\u9020\u2014\u2014\u66f2\u67c4\u5f0f\u7684 “\u5929\u7a7a”\u77ad\u671b\u53f0\u7531\u96c6\u88c5\u7bb1\u7684\u4e24\u4e2a\u90e8\u5206\u5207\u5272\u5e76\u91cd\u65b0\u7ec4\u88c5\u800c\u6210\uff1b”\u5730\u5e73\u7ebf “\u77ad\u671b\u53f0\u5c3d\u7ba1\u6709\u4e00\u9762\u88ab\u5207\u5272\uff0c\u4f46\u4ecd\u80fd\u5728\u9646\u5730\u548c “\u5854 “\u4e4b\u95f4\u67b6\u8d77\u6865\u6881\uff1b\u201c\u5854\u5f0f\u201d\u77ad\u671b\u53f0\u7531\u4e24\u4e2a\u96c6\u88c5\u7bb1\u9996\u5c3e\u76f8\u8fde\u6784\u6210\uff0c\u96c6\u88c5\u7bb1\u5185\u90e8\u7684\u4e00\u4e2a\u94a2\u677f\u697c\u68af\u873f\u8712\u800c\u4e0a\uff0c\u7ecf\u8fc7\u4e24\u4fa7\u51f8\u51fa\u7684\u5e73\u53f0\u3002\u5f53\u53c2\u89c2\u8005\u6cbf\u7740\u5854\u697c\u5411\u4e0a\u79fb\u52a8\u65f6\uff0c\u8fd9\u4e9b\u5e73\u53f0\u63d0\u4f9b\u4e86\u89c2\u666f\u89c6\u91ce\uff1b\u9ed1\u8272\u7684\u94a2\u76d2\u6846\u67b6\u56fa\u5b9a\u5728\u96c6\u88c5\u7bb1\u4e0a\uff0c\u60ac\u6311\u5728\u8461\u8404\u56ed\u4e0a\u65b9\u3002<\/p>\n

The integral strength of the containers made them a perfect choice in the construction of the lookout in particular, enabling the structure of the building to be delivered to site and erected quickly. Each container has been modified in various ways – the cranked ‘sky’ lookout cut from two parts of a container and reassembled; the ‘horizon’ lookout which is able to bridge between land and the ‘tower’ despite one side being cut out; and the ‘tower’ lookout constructed from two containers end on end, inside of which a steel plate stair winds its way up past projecting landings on each side. These landings provide views over the landscape as the viewer moves up the tower; the black steel box frames fixed to the container and cantilevering over the vineyard.<\/p>\n

Craned into position in parts, the lookout’s structural integrity relies on all of the pieces locking in together. The design deliberately reverses the typical aesthetic treatment of steel. Rather than cladding the building in steel, it has been expressed internally, revealing the raw, industrial nature of the construction and hinting at the industrial underpinning of the production process. The external timber cladding (which acts as an visual screen only) plays on the rural \/ agricultural qualities of the site, with the internal steel skin being revealed in a consistent manner through the expression of each of the openings – the apertures in the lookout and opening to the cellar door.<\/p>\n
