Sam Crawford Architects<\/strong><\/a>: The design of a new pedestrian and cycle bridge in a major park in Sydney by Australian firm Sam Crawford Architects (SCA) was inspired by the shape of \u2018bara\u2019 eels and their migration to the Pacific Ocean from the very pond it traverses.<\/p>\n

Sam Crawford, director of SCA said: \u201cThe shape, movement and colour of the long-finned eels is reflected in the form and materiality of the bridge design. The bridge celebrates ancient Indigenous culture and is an environmentally sensitive addition to the vast Centennial Parklands<\/a>, linking them to surrounding areas in inner Sydney.\u201d<\/p>\n

The dynamic expression of the bridge draws attention to the incredible and ancient migration of the eel to reproduce, an important aspect of the local Dharawal people\u2019s traditions.* Their journey takes the eels from the park\u2019s ponds, slipping through storm-water drains and canals and sliding and wriggling overland to the salt water at Botany Bay, and then to spawning grounds near New Caledonia thousands of kilometres away.<\/p>\n

The sinuous curved shape of the bridge recalls the movement of the eels which swim slowly by means of lateral movements of the body. As they move, they shimmer. The bridge\u2019s railings are made of different coloured anodised aluminium fanning out at the centre, echoing the skeletal structure and dynamism of the eel. They shimmer in the sunlight, reflect off the surface of the water, just like the eels\u2019 silvery underbelly. Colours were selected for camouflage and movement.<\/p>\n

Sam Crawford\u7ee7\u7eed\u8bf4\u9053\uff1a\u201c40\u7c73\u957f\u7684\u5927\u6865\u8f7b\u76c8\u5730\u5750\u843d\u5728\u6c60\u5858\u4e0a\u65b9\uff0c\u6210\u4e3a\u4e00\u4e2a\u4e0e\u81ea\u7136\u73af\u5883\u878d\u4e3a\u4e00\u4f53\u7684\u6807\u5fd7\u6027\u5165\u53e3\u3002\u4e0d\u540c\u4e8e\u516c\u56ed\u5176\u4ed6\u5165\u53e3\u4f53\u73b0\u7684\u6b27\u5f0f\u98ce\u60c5\uff0c\u8fd9\u5ea7\u6865\u7684\u8bbe\u8ba1\u662f\u4e3a\u4e86\u7eaa\u5ff5\u51e0\u4e2a\u4e16\u7eaa\u7684\u571f\u8457\u6587\u5316\u3002\u5f53\u7136\u5b83\u4e5f\u53c2\u8003\u4e86\u516c\u56ed\u73b0\u6709\u57fa\u7840\u8bbe\u65bd\u7684\u6750\u6599\u548c\u8272\u5f69\u3002\u201d<\/p>\n

\u8fd9\u4e2a\u65b0\u7684\u65e0\u969c\u788d\u901a\u9053\u53d6\u4ee3\u4e86\u4e00\u5ea7\u7834\u65e7\u7684\u3001\u65e0\u6cd5\u4f7f\u7528\u7684\u4eba\u884c\u6865\u3002\u5b83\u5c06\u516c\u56ed\u4e0e\u4e00\u4e2a\u65b0\u7684\u8f7b\u8f68\u7ad9\u3001\u66f4\u5e7f\u6cdb\u7684\u6b65\u884c\u548c\u81ea\u884c\u8f66\u7cfb\u7edf\u4ee5\u53ca\u5468\u8fb9\u90ca\u533a\u8fde\u63a5\u8d77\u6765\u3002\u201c\u8fd9\u79cd\u4e0e\u8457\u540d\u516c\u56ed\u7684\u73b0\u4ee3\u8054\u7cfb\u4e5f\u5c06\u73af\u5883\u4ef7\u503c\u4f5c\u4e3a\u8bbe\u8ba1\u7684\u6838\u5fc3\u3002\u8fd9\u5ea7\u6865\u8ba9\u6cb3\u5cb8\u514d\u53d7\u4fb5\u8680\uff0c\u4fdd\u62a4\u4e86\u6fd2\u5371\u7269\u79cd\u7684\u6816\u606f\u5730\uff0c\u5e76\u4e3a\u6e38\u5ba2\u63d0\u4f9b\u76f4\u63a5\u63a5\u89e6\u6c60\u5858\u751f\u6001\u7cfb\u7edf\u7684\u673a\u4f1a\u3002\u201d<\/p>\n

\u6865\u8eab\u5728\u4e2d\u5fc3\u5904\u53d8\u5bbd\uff0c\u5f62\u6210\u4e00\u4e2a\u89c2\u666f\u5e73\u53f0\uff0c\u4e00\u4e2a\u4f11\u606f\u7684\u5730\u65b9\uff0c\u8ba9\u884c\u4eba\u53ef\u4ee5\u505c\u4e0b\u6765\u89c2\u8d4f\u6c34\u751f\u751f\u7269\u3001\u9e1f\u7c7b\u548c\u690d\u7269\uff0c\u5982\u6fd2\u5371\u7684\u5df4\u514b\u897f\u4e9a\u704c\u6728\u548c\u672c\u5730\u8349\u3002<\/p>\n

\u201cThe 40 metre long bridge sits lightly above a pond system, making an iconic entrance but also sitting harmoniously within the natural environment. Other gateways to the park all reflect European sensibilities but our design commemorates centuries of Indigenous culture. And it also references the materiality and colours of the park\u2019s existing infrastructure,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

This new accessible gateway replaces a decaying and inaccessible pedestrian bridge. It connects the park to a new light rail station, broader pedestrian\/cycle networks and surrounding suburbs. \u201cThis contemporary connection to the much-loved park also has environmental values at the heart of the design. It protects banks from erosion, preserves habitat for endangered species, and provides visitors with an opportunity to directly engage with the pond ecosystem.\u201d<\/p>\n

The bridge widens at the centre to form a viewing platform, a place of repose, allowing pedestrians to pause and appreciate the aquatic and bird life, and flora, such as endangered banksia scrubs and native grasses.<\/p>\n

\u6750\u6599\u7ecf\u8fc7\u7cbe\u5fc3\u6311\u9009\uff0c\u5177\u6709\u4f4e\u7ef4\u62a4\u3001\u8010\u4e45\u6027\u548c100%\u53ef\u56de\u6536\u6027\u3002\u5f53\u5730\u7684\u6591\u6849\u6811\u88ab\u7528\u4f5c\u6276\u624b\u548c\u8def\u7f18\uff0c\u7802\u5ca9\u7528\u4e8e\u94fa\u8def\u548c\u6321\u5757\u3002\u6865\u9762\u91c7\u7528\u8f7b\u8d28\u3001\u9632\u6ed1\u7684\u73bb\u7483\u7ea4\u7ef4\u589e\u200b\u200b\u5f3a\u5851\u6599\u7f51 (FRP)\u3002\u51fa\u4e8e\u989c\u8272\u3001\u5149\u6cfd\u5ea6\u548c\u56fa\u8272\u5ea6\u8003\u8651\uff0c\u91c7\u7528\u4e86\u9633\u6781\u6c27\u5316\u94dd\u680f\u6746\uff0c\u5b83\u548c\u4e0a\u90e8\u5f69\u94a2\u7ed3\u6784\u4e00\u6837\u90fd\u662f100%\u53ef\u56de\u6536\u7684\u6750\u6599\u3002<\/p>\n

Materials were carefully chosen for their low maintenance, durability, and 100% recyclability. Local spotted gum is used for handrails and kerbs, sandstone for paving and retaining blocks. Lightweight, non-slip fibreglass reinforced plastic mesh (FRP) was selected for the bridge deck. The anodised aluminium balustrade was chosen for its colour, sheen, colourfastness, and 100% recyclability. The painted steel super-structure is also 100% recyclable.<\/p>\n

\u4e3a\u4e86\u5c3d\u91cf\u51cf\u5c11\u5bf9\u6c60\u5858\u751f\u6001\u7cfb\u7edf\u7684\u5e72\u6270\uff0c\u6865\u6881\u5efa\u8bbe\u4e2d\u4ec5\u5728\u6c60\u5858\u5e95\u90e8\u6253\u5165\u4e09\u6839\u6869\u67f1\u3002\u6bcf\u4e2a\u6869\u4e0a\u7684\u56db\u68f1\u4ea4\u53c9\u94a2\u7ed3\u6784\u652f\u6491\u7740\u6865\u6881\uff0c\u63d0\u4f9b\u4e86\u6a2a\u5411\u548c\u7eb5\u5411\u7a33\u5b9a\u6027\u3002\u540c\u65f6\u4e3a\u786e\u4fdd\u51c6\u786e\u6027\u5e76\u51cf\u5c11\u6d6a\u8d39\uff0c\u6574\u4e2a\u7ed3\u6784\u548c\u680f\u6746\u5728\u573a\u5916\u8fdb\u884c\u4e86\u9884\u7ec4\u88c5\uff0c\u5e76\u5728\u73b0\u573a\u91cd\u65b0\u5b89\u88c5\u3002\u5728\u6bcf\u4e2a\u8fde\u63a5\u90e8\u4ef6\u548c\u7ec4\u4ef6\u5236\u9020\u4e4b\u524d\uff0c\u8bbe\u8ba1\u56e2\u961f\u8fd8\u8f85\u4ee53D\u65bd\u5de5\u56fe\u7eb8\u6765\u4fdd\u8bc1\u51c6\u786e\u6027\u3002<\/p>\n

To minimise disturbance to the pond ecosystem just three piles were driven into the pond-bed. A four prong cruciform steel structure from each pile supports the bridge and provides both lateral and longitudinal stability. To ensure accuracy and minimise waste the entire structure and balustrade was assembled offsite and reassembled on site. 3D shop drawings ensured accuracy of each connection and component prior to fabrication.<\/p>\n
