During the 20th century, regime changes and political clashes brought considerable turbulence to Kosovo and its cities. As a result, Prishtina currently suffers from a substantial shortage of public space. A large group of disenfranchised local residents are eager to reverse this situation, described by the city\u2019s former mayor Shpend Ahmeti as an ongoing \u201cbattle for public space\u201d.<\/p>\n

In response to this situation, CRA and Manifesta 14 put forward an innovative methodology for inclusive urban innovation, whose initial results will be visible in Prishtina during the biennial. This experimental \u201copen-source urbanism\u201d methodology is based on a series of temporary to permanent interventions developed with a participatory approach based on citizen feedback.<\/p>\n

First, CRA mapped the city and identified a wide range of socially and culturally significant sites. Despite many of them being in compromised conditions, these locations have the potential to trigger an urban renaissance. In this phase, the studio teamed up with MIT Senseable City Lab to use artificial intelligence analysis to form a digital streetscape of the city. The findings were subsequently realized in collaboration with students from the architecture faculty of the University of Prishtina<\/a>. The related data can be accessed on request by researchers, in the spirit of open-source urbanism.<\/p>\n

Second, temporary renovations, or Urban Interventions, were set up to demonstrate how the same locations can be reclaimed by and for Prishtina\u2019s citizens. Such work was conducted at a low cost in a short period of time, with a clear speculative orientation. Then, local residents were invited to \u201cvote with their feet\u201d, deciding whether these interventions should be made permanent, or be modified or discarded. Finally, evaluation sessions will be held to facilitate the accelerated evolution of the city.<\/p>\n

Such methodology was applied to build the Green Corridor. This 1.3-kilometer former railway track, which used to be filled with abandoned cars and trash, has now been transformed into a pedestrian path with seating and plants. In addition, it links up two main locations of Manifesta 14: the Palace of Youth and Sports and the Brick Factory. The walkway, redeveloped in just twenty days of work, addresses the debate about how to remedy Prishtina\u2019s problem of low pedestrian accessibility, and provides a leisure space for residents and exhibition-goers. A circular approach ensures that all the elements of the corridor are easily removable and reusable in other locations. Visitors can reach the Green Corridor independently, or through the mediated tours organized by the biennial.<\/p>\n

CRA\u65e9\u57282021\u5e74\u5c31\u5b9e\u73b0\u4e86\u5176\u4ed6\u57ce\u5e02\u5e72\u9884\u63aa\u65bd\uff0c\u5b83\u4eec\u4ee5\u4e0d\u540c\u7684\u65b9\u5f0f\u878d\u5165\u4e86\u666e\u91cc\u4ec0\u8482\u7eb3\u7684\u793e\u4f1a\u7ed3\u6784\u4e2d\u3002\u4f8b\u5982\uff0cHivzi Sulejmani\u56fe\u4e66\u9986\u5916\u90e8\u5728\u53bb\u5e746\u6708\u4ece\u4e00\u4e2a\u975e\u6b63\u5f0f\u7684\u505c\u8f66\u573a\u88ab\u6539\u5efa\u4e3a\u4e00\u4e2a\u6c38\u4e45\u6027\u7684\u6587\u5316\u673a\u6784\u2014\u2014\u53d9\u4e8b\u5b9e\u8df5\u4e2d\u5fc3\uff08Centre For Narrative Practice\uff09\u30022021\u5e74\u590f\u5929\u7531CRA\u9996\u6b21\u6539\u5efa\u4e3a\u201c\u57ce\u5e02\u5ba2\u5385\u201d\u7684\u65e7\u7816\u5382\uff0c\u518d\u7531\u5fb7\u56fd\u5efa\u7b51\u4e8b\u52a1\u6240raumlabor\u6539\u9020\u6210\u4e86\u4e00\u4e2a\u4e34\u65f6\u7684\u751f\u6001\u57ce\u5e02\u5b66\u4e60\u4e2d\u5fc3\uff0c\u5e76\u4e0e\u53cc\u5e74\u5c55\u540c\u671f\u5f00\u5e55\u3002\u8fd9\u4e9b\u9879\u76ee\u5c55\u793a\u4e86\u201c\u5f00\u6e90\u57ce\u5e02\u4e3b\u4e49\u201d\u5982\u4f55\u5728\u4e0d\u540c\u7684\u65f6\u95f4\u5185\u5b9e\u73b0\u6539\u53d8\u3002CRA\u8fd8\u4e0e\u79d1\u7d22\u6c83\u6587\u5316\u90e8\u3001\u9752\u5e74\u4f53\u80b2\u5bab\u5408\u4f5c\uff0c\u52a9\u529b\u5c062 Korriku\u8857\u6539\u9020\u4e3a\u4e00\u4e2a\u4e13\u95e8\u7684\u6b65\u884c\u533a\uff0c\u8fd9\u6761\u5145\u6ee1\u6d3b\u529b\u7684\u5c0f\u5df7\u88ab\u5f53\u5730\u4eba\u79f0\u4e3aKafet e Rakis\u3002<\/p>\n

Other Urban Interventions were realized by CRA back in 2021, and have been integrated into Prishtina\u2019s social fabric in different ways. For instance, the former Hivzi Sulejmani Library, whose external gates were reclaimed from an illegal parking lot in June of last year, was turned into a permanent cultural institution, the Centre for Narrative Practice, by Manifesta 14 Prishtina. The former Brick Factory, first converted into a \u2018urban living room\u2019 by CRA in summer 2021, was transformed by German architectural practice raumlabor into a temporary Eco Urban Learning Center opened along with the Biennial. These projects show how \u201copen-source urbanism\u201d can enact change within different time frames. Working with Kosovo\u2019s Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport, CRA also helped pedestrianize 2 Korriku street, a vibrant alley that is known to locals as Kafet e Rakis (Rakia\u2019s cafes).<\/p>\n

CRA was first commissioned by Manifesta 14 to conduct the Urban Vision in March 2021. The entire working process is detailed in the publication of the Manifesta 14 pre-biennial process titled Public After All. The project was developed in collaboration with the MIT Senseable City Lab and the Kosovo Architecture Foundation. It ultimately shaped the biennial\u2019s overall approach, with Carlo Ratti named as Creative Mediator of the Urban Program, alongside Catherine Nichols, the Creative Mediator of the Artistic Program.<\/p>\n

In the last decade, CRA has been involved in the curatorship of major art and design events to advocate for more equitable urban processes. In 2012, the studio published an \u201cOpen Source Architecture Manifesto\u201d at the Istanbul Design Biennale, and was chief curator of the \u201cEyes of the City\u201d exhibition at the 2019 Bi-City Biennale of Urbanism\/Architecture in Shenzhen. The latter project included many installations hypothesizing how to democratize digital technologies in the social space. Ratti also curated the BMW Guggenheim Pavilion in Berlin in 2012, the Future Food District at Milan\u2019s 2015 World Expo, and co-curated the 2021 Porto Design Biennale.<\/p>\n
