The project, situated in the middle section of Yunji Road, Xiling District, Yichang City, borders on the south entrance of Yichang Children Park (within the scope of 30-60m) and faces the important Taohualing Ambassador Hotel which represents the city image of Yichang at the Yunji Road. This project is regarded as the important open space pocket garden of update project on Yunji Road. It borders on the south side of Yichang Children Park and faces the Taohualing Ambassador Hotel.<\/p>\n

Designers confront many challenges in design due to its multiple identities:<\/p>\n

01. How to open the boundary?
\nYichang Children Park was established in 1956, with the former name of Xiling Park, and was renamed as Children Park in 1986. As the park completed in the last century, it was installed with an iron fence to facilitate the park management at that time. It is undoubtedly urgent to dismantle the wall and reveal green in design. But it must be considered how to open the fence, reorganize to enter the motion line, achieve organize combination with internal motion line to make the internal space more efficient.<\/p>\n

02.\u00a0\u00a0 How to reserve tall trees?
\nThere are lots of towering trees at the original site. the dense shade of branches and leaves ward off the sun, providing extremely perfect tree-lined space. The space points of trees and natural elevation difference of Yunji Road from Dongshan to Yangtze River brings abundant space variation and topographic elevation difference. These trees have been developed for half a century, recorded the vicissitudes of life of this city, and silently stood at a corner of the park. Nowadays, how do they blend in the life of the citizens?<\/p>\n

03. How to achieve an organic combination with urban context?
\nIt must be considered how to embody the modernity, vitality and fashion of Yuanji Road to citizens and integrate those trees into the urban context in such only large-area open space (1.5km section of Yunji Road).<\/p>\n

After dismantling the wall to reveal green, designers break the rigid boundary between sidewalk and park, and attempt to make such boundary dim. Finally, the city sidewalk and green public space blend mutually and become a soft, transparent, more inclusive and human open space. At this time, the city sidewalk is a part of urban traffic, and blends into park space. The boundary of park is open space of park and the flexible boundary of city sidewalk. Besides, the boundary shall own strong identification for the urban roads and Taohualing Ambassador Hotel in the opposite.<\/p>\n

The openness of boundary doesn’t simply mean that the fence is dismantled, people can arrive at inside of park quickly. The flowing line connects the internal and external space of park and integrates the city life into the internal space of park. Based on the original demands of the venue, the comfortable space below trees is opened. The curve of flowing space makes the venue present different elevation differences, while the flowing space annihilates the height difference between the inside and outside of park and the urban roads, so, the park footpath through which people can quickly arrive at the center of park, the terrace park, activity square, etc. can be designed and established.<\/p>\n

In the past fifty years, a leafy forest has been formed in the city, and every tree can be embraced by 2-3 persons. So to speak, these trees witness the development of this city. The rest of the trees are also reorganized and arranged as well. They may be designed as the terrace tree array space, the isolated trees on the lawn, or the park space on terrace or the background forest on the boundary. The whole design process is like the exchange process with the original venue, and even like the process of listening to the demands of trees.<\/p>\n

The following Yunji Park generates: Soft and transparent boundary, flowing space, open trees, and a soft meadow with a neat boundary in the opposite of Taohualing Ambassador Hotel which presents the greatest sense of ritual to the centuries-old Hotel. Through organic combination between the flowing space and the inside of park, the towering trees at one corner of park integrate the history for more than half a century into the life of citizens and provide unique green space for the urban public activities. Maybe from this moment, these trees would become a new collective memory of citizens in future life.<\/p>\n

Designers design and arrange the motion line of space by connecting the venue and internal space of park with the flowing line, and set the LOGO of Yunji Park at the sight line of pedestrians.<\/p>\n

In the afternoon of working days, the young people in the surrounding office relax under the trees of green lawn. Parents playing outside with children, the elderly people playing chess, square dancing team, the elderly people engaged in literature and art work, young people reading, children running and jumping, students after school, and young people meeting and chatting, find their belonging places in the Yunji Park.<\/p>\n
