Here, residents and visitors alike can enjoy a variety of experiences in a year-round outdoor space easily accessible by foot, bike, or public transit.<\/p>\n

To catalyze activity and generate more revenue, the city entered into a partnership with a local developer who proposed an innovative mixed-use building that would enable large corporate tenants, including a music streaming company, to coexist synergistically with small local ice cream and coffee shops. Civic leaders were also committed to making downtown a less car-centric environment, focusing instead on access on foot or by bicycle.<\/p>\n

Once the development\u2019s shape, size, and tenant potential were determined, the City focused on how it could energize the surrounding environment, asking \u201dWhat could best engage people in a civic center?\u201d Historically known as the \u201cHeart of Screenland,\u201d Culver City is where Hollywood studios first took root and produced iconic films like \u201cGone with the Wind.\u201d Culver City still has a vibrant arts community that attracts visitors and has become popular as a hub for artists and artisans of all kinds \u2013 what has become known as a \u201cmaker culture.\u201d The public engagement process revealed the need for a gathering space that was highly flexible and programmable.<\/p>\n

The city and design team worked with the local business improvement district, residents, and other stakeholders to help celebrate and encourage \u201cmaker culture.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u5728\u8bbe\u60f3\u8fd9\u4e2a\u5f00\u653e\u7a7a\u95f4\u7684\u5f62\u5f0f\u65f6\uff0c\u8bbe\u8ba1\u5e08\u8003\u8651\u5230\u4e86\u8be5\u5730\u5757\u7684\u7528\u6237\u7684\u9700\u6c42\u548c\u4e60\u60ef\uff0c\u5e76\u4ece\u5468\u56f4\u7684\u5730\u5f62\u4e2d\u83b7\u53d6\u8bbe\u8ba1\u601d\u8def\u3002\u5728\u6674\u6717\u7684\u65e5\u5b50\uff0c\u6d1b\u6749\u77f6\u76c6\u5730\u5468\u56f4\u5c71\u8109\u7684\u666f\u8272\u5c3d\u6536\u773c\u5e95\u3002\u8bbe\u8ba1\u56e2\u961f\u5229\u7528\u4e86\u73af\u7ed5\u57ce\u5e02\u7684\u5357\u52a0\u5dde\u6a2a\u5411\u5c71\u8109\u7684\u666f\u8272\uff0c\u5176\u4e2d\u5305\u62ec\u5723\u83ab\u5c3c\u5361\u5c71\u8109\u548c\u5723\u52a0\u5e03\u91cc\u57c3\u5c14\u5c71\u8109\u5c71\u811a\uff0c\u4ee5\u53ca\u6bd7\u90bb\u57ce\u5e02\u7684\u9c8d\u5fb7\u6e29\u5c71\u3002<\/p>\n

In envisioning what form this open space might take, designers considered the site\u2019s users and took cues from the surrounding terrain. On a clear night, there are spectacular views of the mountain ranges that rise above and encircle the Los Angeles basin. The project takes advantage of local viewsheds towards the Southern California peaks that surround the site, including the foothills of the Santa Monica and San Gabriel Mountains, as well as Baldwin Hills (directly adjacent to the city).<\/p>\n

Public and private space coalesce alongside the architecture and literally step up from the ground level with an amphitheater-like grand staircase\u2014giving rise to the development\u2019s identity as the \u201cCulver Steps.\u201d The plaza extends out from the building, integrating street level amenities that are accessible from all street frontages and welcoming to all visitors and passers-by.<\/p>\n

\u25bd\u5361\u592b\u5c14\u9636\u68af\u5f0f\u5267\u573a\u5411\u6d1b\u6749\u77f6\u76c6\u5730\u7684\u5b8f\u4f1f\u81ea\u7136\u666f\u89c2\u81f4\u656c\uff0c\u8fd9\u4e2a\u9636\u68af\u5df2\u6210\u4e3a\u57ce\u5e02\u5e7f\u573a\u6700\u5177\u8fa8\u8bc6\u5ea6\u7684\u8bbe\u8ba1\u5143\u7d20\u4e4b\u4e00\u3002The stepped amphitheater now known as \u201cCulver Steps\u201d echoes the surrounding terrain and has become one of the most recognizable designed elements of the urban plaza.<\/span><\/p>\n

The success of the design process emphasized the importance of communication, coordination, mock-ups required to realize an iconic feature in a public urban plaza. The Culver Steps and Main Plaza\u2019s numerous areas for seating and rest, including its public picnic tables and movable furniture, promotes human connection in an urban environment.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Main Plaza stretches through the remainder of the site, continuing the distinctive paving patterns of the steps to unite adjacent landmarks and destinations in downtown Culver City. These include the historic Culver Studios, the Culver Hotel and Kirk Douglas Theatre, the Actors Gang Theatre, and Arclight Cinemas.<\/p>\n

\u5361\u5c14\u5f17\u6b65\u884c\u5e7f\u573a\u6ee1\u8db3\u4e86\u5361\u5c14\u5f17\u5e02\u9886\u5bfc\u4eba\u5efa\u7acb\u7684\u5b9c\u5c45\u57ce\u5e02\u793e\u533a\u7684\u613f\u671b\u3002\u5e7f\u573a\u548c\u5f00\u653e\u7a7a\u95f4\u88ab\u8bbe\u8ba1\u6210\u4e00\u4e2a\u6b22\u8fce\u5e73\u53f0\uff0c\u5728\u8fd9\u91cc\uff0c\u5546\u6237\u5438\u5f15\u5728\u6b64\u65e5\u5e38\u5de5\u4f5c\u7684\u4eba\u7fa4\uff0c\u7531\u5f53\u5730\u653f\u5e9c\u63d0\u4f9b\u7684\u7279\u522b\u6d3b\u52a8\u4e5f\u5438\u5f15\u66f4\u5e7f\u6cdb\u7684\u4ece\u793e\u533a\u5468\u8fb9\u5230\u6765\u7684\u4eba\u7fa4\u3002\u4e3a\u4e86\u7a81\u51fa\u5b9c\u5c45\u6027\u3001\u6b65\u884c\u6027\u548c\u9a91\u884c\u6027\uff0c\u653f\u5e9c\u5728\u5e7f\u573a\u5468\u56f4\u8bbe\u7f6e\u4e86\u7eff\u8272\u8857\u9053\u548c\u81ea\u884c\u8f66\u9053\u3002<\/p>\n

The Culver Steps and Main Plaza reflect civic leaders\u2019 vision for a livable urban neighborhood. The plaza and open space are designed to be a welcoming platform where commercial tenants draw in day users, and special programming is provided by the local public agency to activate the space and draw crowds during later hours. To emphasize livability, walkability and bike-ability, the City also instituted green streets techniques and bike lanes surrounding the project site.<\/p>\n

\u25bd\u8def\u9762\u8bbe\u8ba1\u4f7f\u7528\u7070\u8272\u7ebf\u6027\u94fa\u8def\u77f3\u6df7\u5408\u4eba\u5de5\u8349\u76ae\u8425\u9020\u51fa\u5fae\u5999\u7684\u989c\u8272\u7eb9\u8def\u3002\u4e3a\u4e86\u9075\u5b88ADA\u5b89\u5168\u6307\u5357\u5e76\u4fdd\u6301\u9632\u706b\u901a\u9053\uff0c\u4eba\u9020\u8349\u76ae\u6761\u88ab\u538b\u5b9e\uff0c\u4f7f\u6b65\u884c\u4f53\u9a8c\u66f4\u52a0\u8212\u9002\u3002\u8fd9\u79cd\u6a21\u5f0f\u7684\u94fa\u88c5\u548c\u4eba\u5de5\u8349\u76ae\u6761\u6fc0\u53d1\u4e86\u8bb8\u591a\u5e74\u8f7b\u6e38\u5ba2\u7684\u5174\u8da3\uff0c\u4ed6\u4eec\u53ef\u4ee5\u5728\u8fd9\u4e2a\u5f00\u653e\u7684\u6c34\u5e73\u5e7f\u573a\u4e0a\u63a2\u7d22\u4e0d\u540c\u7684\u8def\u5f84\u3002The paving design creates subtle ripples of color, using multi-toned grey linear pavers intermixed with synthetic turf. In order to honor ADA safety guidelines and to maintain a fire lane, the synthetic turf strips also soften the walking experience to minimize compaction. The patterned paving and synthetic turf strips have inspired many young visitors to playfully explore the plaza, discovering different pathways on this otherwise open, level plaza.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u5361\u5c14\u5f17\u53f0\u9636\u4ee5\u53ca\u4e3b\u5e7f\u573a\u4f5c\u4e3a\u4e00\u4e2a\u65b0\u7684\u805a\u4f1a\u573a\u6240\uff0c\u65e5\u5e38\u4f1a\u4e3e\u529e\u5404\u79cd\u6587\u5316\u8868\u6f14\uff0c\u4e3a\u66f4\u5927\u7684\u793e\u533a\u670d\u52a1\u3002\u4f5c\u4e3a\u4e00\u4e2a\u7279\u6b8a\u6d3b\u52a8\u548c\u5b63\u8282\u6027\u8282\u76ee\u7684\u5e73\u53f0\uff0c\u5e7f\u573a\u53ef\u4ee5\u53d8\u6210\u4e00\u4e2a\u97f3\u4e50\u548c\u821e\u8e48\u7684\u5267\u9662\uff0c\u6216\u8005\u4e00\u4e2a\u529f\u80fd\u9f50\u5168\u7684\u57ce\u5e02\u793e\u533a\u821e\u53f0\u3002<\/p>\n

Cultural performances are scheduled in the Main Plaza as well as on the Culver Steps, and the new development serves the greater community as a new gathering place. As a platform for special events and seasonal programming, the Plaza can transform into a theatre for music and dance, or a fully functional town stage.<\/p>\n

This mixed-use development was designed to be open and welcoming to the community from all sides, seeking to create a human-scaled public destination at its core. Today, it functions as a community dining room for Culver City\u2019s many restaurants, providing ample outdoor seating where families and visitors can sit together in the fresh air and enjoy a free, safe sense of connection with one another.<\/p>\n

\u25bd\u57ce\u5e02\u5e7f\u573a\u7684\u7167\u660e\u662f\u51b3\u5b9a\u5e7f\u573a\u591c\u665a\u6d3b\u8dc3\u5ea6\u7684\u4e00\u4e2a\u91cd\u8981\u5f71\u54cd\u56e0\u7d20\u3002\u56e0\u6b64\uff0c\u5e7f\u573a\u7684\u5730\u5e73\u7ebf\uff0c\u89c6\u5e73\u7ebf\u53ca\u9876\u90e8\u4f4d\u7f6e\u5747\u5b89\u88c5\u4e86\u706f\u3002\u5730\u9762\u7684\u7ebf\u6027\u5730\u706f\u7167\u4eae\u4e86\u5c0f\u8def\uff0c\u884c\u4eba\u53ef\u4ee5\u8f7b\u677e\u5730\u5728\u5e7f\u573a\u4e2d\u7a7f\u884c\u3002\u50cf\u661f\u661f\u4e00\u6837\u5d4c\u5728\u53f0\u9636\u548c\u5ea7\u4f4d\u8868\u9762\u7684\u706f\uff0c\u5728\u4eba\u4eec\u770b\u5411\u53f0\u9636\u65f6\u4e0d\u4f1a\u89c9\u5f97\u523a\u773c\u3002\u5e26\u6709\u6208\u6ce2\u900f\u955c\u56fe\u6848\u7684\u9876\u706f\u663e\u793a\u51fa\u53e6\u4e00\u79cd\u611f\u89c9\uff0c\u540c\u65f6\u706f\u5149\u4e5f\u4f1a\u968f\u5b63\u8282\u53d8\u6362\u3002Lighting is an important consideration for activating an urban plaza during the evening. Here, the lighting design illuminates the space at the ground level, eye level, and overhead. Pathway illumination enables pedestrians to easily navigate the space. Lights on steps\u2019 rising faces, and complementary seating, are arranged in a constellation-like manner, to draw visitors\u2019 eye up the steps without being overpowering or blinding. Overhead lights with gobo lens patterns introduce yet another texture that animates the space, with the added benefit of being easy to update seasonally.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u516c\u79c1\u5408\u4f5c\u6a21\u5f0f\u4e2d\uff0c\u653f\u5e9c\u8d1f\u8d23\u7ef4\u62a4\u548c\u8fd0\u8425\uff0c\u5e76\u4e3a\u6237\u5916\u5e7f\u573a\u63d0\u4f9b\u4e30\u5bcc\u7684\u6d3b\u52a8\u3002\u5361\u5c14\u5f17\u6b65\u884c\u5e7f\u573a\u4e0a\u7684\u5b63\u8282\u6027\u6d3b\u52a8\u4e3b\u8981\u6709\u9732\u5929\u821e\u8e48\u3001\u519c\u8d38\u5e02\u573a\u3001\u590f\u5b63\u7235\u58eb\u97f3\u4e50\u8282\u548c\u50cf\u5723\u8bde\u6811\u70b9\u706f\u4eea\u5f0f\u8fd9\u6837\u7684\u4f20\u7edf\u8282\u5e86\u3002\u8fd9\u4e9b\u6d3b\u52a8\u7075\u611f\u6765\u81ea\u57ce\u5e02\u4e2d\u539f\u6709\u7684\u201c\u521b\u5ba2\u6587\u5316\u201d\uff0c\u4e5f\u8ba9\u8fd9\u91cc\u7684\u7535\u5f71\u5236\u7247\u5382\u3001\u9910\u5385\u3001\u5267\u9662\u548c\u827a\u672f\u7ee7\u7eed\u84ec\u52c3\u53d1\u5c55\u3002<\/p>\n

The private\/public partnership model allows the City to take charge of maintenance and operations as well as to provide an active program for the outdoor plaza. Dance programs, farmers markets, summer jazz festivals, and cultural events such as a Christmas Tree Lighting are among the seasonal attractions offered at The Culver Steps and Main Plaza. Each program draws inspiration from the city\u2019s \u201cmaker culture,\u201d fostering the ongoing growth and vitality of movie studios, restaurants, theatres, and the arts.<\/p>\n
