Architecture\u00a0 Design & Research Institute, South China University Of Technology<\/a><\/strong>\uff1aSouth China University of Technology (SCUT) is a prestigious National Key University directly under the Ministry of Education of the People\u2019s Republic of China, and is widely recognized as a leading institution of higher education in Southern China. SCUT has achieved impressive distinctions, including being designated a “Double First Class University,” a participant in “Project 211” and “Project 985,” and one of the “Eight Old Schools of Architecture” (referring to 8 schools that established Architecture majors earliest in the history of the People’s Republic of China). The Landscape Improvement Project at South China University of Technology\u2019s South Gate Area is situated at the southern entrance of SCUT\u2019s Wushan Campus. It serves as the focal point of the initial campus central axis starting at the South Gate Square, extending all the way to Wushan Metro Station, and encompasses 3 main exits to the school, covering a distance of approximately 3 kilometers. This project plays a vital role in projecting the image of SCUT, and holds great significance for the university.<\/p>\n

1934\u5e74\uff0c\u56fd\u7acb\u4e2d\u5c71\u5927\u5b66\u77f3\u724c\u6821\u533a\u4e1a\u5df2\u5960\u57fa\uff0c\u5357\u95e8\u77f3\u724c\u59cb\u5efa\u3002\u6b64\u540e\u8fd1\u4e00\u4e2a\u4e16\u7eaa\uff0c\u5b66\u6821\u51e0\u7ecf\u53d8\u66f4\uff0c1952\u5e74\u534e\u5357\u5de5\u5b66\u9662\u4e8e\u6b64\u6210\u7acb\uff0c1988\u5e74\u66f4\u540d\u534e\u5357\u7406\u5de5\u5927\u5b66\u30022004\u5e74\uff0c\u4f4d\u4e8e\u756a\u79ba\u533a\u7684\u5927\u5b66\u57ce\u6821\u533a\u5efa\u6210\u6295\u5165\u4f7f\u7528\uff1b2019\u5e74\uff0c\u5e7f\u5dde\u56fd\u9645\u6821\u533a\u5728\u756a\u79ba\u533a\u521b\u65b0\u57ce\u5357\u5cb8\u62c9\u5f00\u534e\u5357\u7406\u5de5\u5927\u5b66\u65b0\u5f81\u7a0b\u7684\u5e8f\u5e55\u3002<\/p>\n

\u767e\u5e74\u6ca7\u6851\uff0c\u4e91\u70df\u8fc7\u5f80\u3002\u6070\u9022\u534e\u5357\u7406\u5de5\u5927\u5b66\u7ec4\u5efa70\u5468\u5e74\u66a8\u5efa\u6821105\u5e74\u6821\u5e86\uff0c\u4e91\u5c71\u73e0\u6c34\u627f\u5e73\u65e5\u4e45\uff0c\u5357\u56fd\u5b66\u5e9c\u4ea6\u662f\u6843\u674e\u6210\u6797\u3002\u7136\u800c\uff0c\u4e94\u5c71\u6821\u533a\u5357\u7aef\u6821\u95e8\u53ca\u5176\u5468\u8fb9\u4f5c\u4e3a\u8fd9\u6240\u534e\u5357\u540d\u6821\u7684\u7b2c\u4e00\u95e8\u9762\uff0c\u7ecf\u5e74\u7ef4\u62a4\u4e0d\u4f73\uff0c\u53c8\u53cd\u590d\u4fee\u6574\uff0c\u8bbe\u65bd\u8001\u5316\uff0c\u754c\u9762\u51cc\u4e71\uff0c\u5176\u98ce\u8c8c\u4e9f\u5f85\u6539\u9020\u3002<\/p>\n

In 1934, the groundbreaking ceremony of the Shipai Campus and the construction of the memorial archway at the South Gate marked the start of National Sun Yat-sen University. Over the course of nearly a century, the university has undergone significant transformations. In 1952, South China University of Engineering was established at the same location and was later renamed South China University of Technology in 1988. The completion and utilization of the SCUT Guangzhou Higher Education Mega Center Campus in Panyu District, Guangzhou in 2004 marked another milestone in the university’s history. In 2019, the construction of the Guangzhou International Campus, located on the south bank of Innovation Hub in Panyu, ushered in a new chapter in the development of SCUT.<\/p>\n

As SCUT approaches the 70th anniversary of its reestablishment and 105th anniversary of its founding, it is clear that despite a century of change, Baiyun Mountain and Zhujiang River remain tranquil while this university in Southern China has flourished with countless accomplished students. However, as the prominent gateway to this esteemed institution, the South Gate of the Wushan Campus and its surrounding areas have suffered from years of inadequate maintenance and frequent repairs. These facilities have become outdated, and the appearance has fallen into disarray, leading to the area being in dire need of a makeover.<\/p>\n

\u4f5c\u4e3a\u534e\u5357\u7406\u5de5\u5927\u5b66\u6821\u56ed\u7684\u5f62\u8c61\u7a97\u53e3\uff0c\u76ee\u524d\u7684\u534e\u5de5\u5357\u95e8\u524d\u5e7f\u573a\u533a\u57df\u7ef4\u62a4\u4e0d\u4f73\uff0c\u754c\u9762\u7834\u788e\uff0c\u7ecf\u5386\u591a\u6b21\u7ffb\u4fee\u8bbe\u8ba1\u5143\u7d20\u6742\u4e71\uff0c\u690d\u7269\u957f\u52bf\u4ea6\u4e0d\u751a\u826f\u597d\uff0c\u7f3a\u5c11\u4e86\u5927\u5b66\u6821\u56ed\u7684\u6c14\u8d28\uff0c\u5176\u666f\u89c2\u5177\u6709\u8f83\u5927\u7684\u63d0\u5347\u7a7a\u95f4\u3002<\/p>\n

2\u3001\u529f\u80fd\u4e0d\u8db3 Functional insufficiencies<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u9879\u76ee\u6cbf\u8def\u591a\u6709\u51fa\u5165\u53e3\uff0c\u9664\u6821\u56ed\u5f62\u8c61\u5c55\u793a\u4e4b\u5916\uff0c\u4e5f\u662f\u5e08\u751f\u65e5\u5e38\u6d3b\u52a8\u7684\u8981\u9053\uff0c\u8fdb\u51fa\u6821\u56ed\uff0c\u7a7f\u8d8a\u6821\u56ed\u53ca\u5bb6\u5c5e\u533a\u3001\u4f53\u80b2\u573a\u9986\u7b49\u91cd\u8981\u6821\u56ed\u573a\u6240\uff0c\u4ee5\u81f3\u4e8e\u6821\u5916\u4eba\u58eb\u5165\u6821\uff0c\u7686\u9700\u8981\u5f80\u6765\u6b64\u5904\u3002\u4f46\u662f\u73b0\u72b6\u7f3a\u5c11\u805a\u96c6\u4f11\u61a9\u7a7a\u95f4\uff0c\u6821\u95e8\u53ca\u6821\u94ed\u77f3\u7684\u5408\u5f71\u533a\uff0c\u4e0e\u4e00\u4e9b\u975e\u673a\u52a8\u8f66\u7684\u505c\u653e\u7a7a\u95f4\u3002<\/p>\n

3\u3001\u4ea4\u901a\u4e0d\u7545 Traffic congestion<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u73b0\u72b6\u8bbe\u8ba1\u9053\u8def\u7834\u635f\u3001\u4ea4\u901a\u6df7\u4e71\uff0c\u8f66\u884c\u53ca\u6b65\u884c\u7cfb\u7edf\u5206\u6d41\u4e0d\u7406\u60f3\uff0c\u6821\u56ed\u5165\u53e3\u6027\u5f15\u5bfc\u4e5f\u6bd4\u8f83\u5f31\u3002<\/p>\n

As a critical representation of the SCUT campus, the current state of the South Gate Square is suboptimal and has not been maintained well. After multiple renovations, the design elements lack uniformity, and the condition of the vegetation is disappointing. As a result, the South Gate fails to embody the image of this distinguished university campus. There is ample room for improvement in terms of landscaping, which would greatly enhance the visual appeal of this important gateway.<\/p>\n

The project area encompasses several entrances to the campus that are accessible from various roads. In addition to presenting the university’s image, the South Gate also serves as a primary thoroughfare for students and teachers for their daily activities. It facilitates access to the campus, family areas, sports venues, and other significant amenities, even for those entering from outside the campus. Regrettably, the current area is inadequate for recreational and social activities. Moreover, it lacks the space needed for group photos at the school gate with the school inscription stone, as well as parking spaces for non-motorized vehicles.<\/p>\n

The current roads in the project area exhibit signs of wear and tear. Traffic is chaotic, and the system of separating vehicles and pedestrians is suboptimal. Convenient access to the campus entrance is inhibited by the current state of the area\u2019s environment.<\/p>\n

1.\u767e\u5e74\u5b66\u9053 \u6811\u5927\u5b66\u95e8\u6237\u5f62\u8c61\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u4e3a\u4e86\u505a\u597d\u6821\u56ed\u7b2c\u4e00\u9762\u7684\u8bbe\u8ba1\uff0c\u8bbe\u8ba1\u56e2\u961f\u7814\u7a76\u5b66\u4e60\u4e86\u5927\u91cf\u56fd\u5185\u5916\u5386\u53f2\u6821\u56ed\u7a7a\u95f4\uff0c\u501f\u9274\u5176\u5bf9\u57ce\u5e02\u5f00\u653e\u7684\u4e2d\u592e\u6821\u56ed\u4e3b\u666f\uff0c\u53d6\u201c\u767e\u5e74\u5b66\u9053\u201d\u4e4b\u610f\uff0c\u6253\u9020\u81ea\u7136\u5927\u6c14\u7684\u758f\u6797\u8349\u576a\u5b66\u9053\u573a\u666f\uff0c\u5c06\u534e\u5de5\u7684\u6821\u56ed\u65f6\u7a7a\u8bb0\u5f55\u5316\u4f5c\u666f\u89c2\u8282\u70b9\u8bbe\u8ba1\u7684\u5143\u7d20\u3002\u540c\u65f6\u9009\u53d6\u8003\u7a76\u7684\u9020\u666f\u6750\u8d28\uff0c\u4ee5\u5339\u914d\u539f\u6709\u6821\u94ed\u77f3\u53ca\u6821\u95e8\u7684\u8bbe\u8ba1\u98ce\u683c\uff0c\u8425\u9020\u6c89\u6dc0\u7684\u5386\u53f2\u611f\u3002\u5728\u690d\u683d\u8bbe\u8ba1\u4e0a\uff0c\u5b8c\u5168\u4fdd\u7559\u4e86\u573a\u5730\u539f\u6709\u7684\u4e54\u6728\u4f5c\u4e3a\u6821\u56ed\u8bb0\u5fc6\uff0c\u7ed3\u5408\u6613\u7ef4\u62a4\u7684\u65b0\u589e\u704c\u6728\u5730\u88ab\uff0c\u8425\u9020\u4e86\u8212\u9002\u81ea\u7136\u7684\u690d\u7269\u7a7a\u95f4\u3002<\/p>\n

\u5728\u6b65\u884c\u6cbf\u7ebf\u8fd8\u5e03\u8bbe\u6709\u4f11\u61a9\u548c\u6162\u884c\u7684\u82b1\u6797\u7a7a\u95f4\uff0c\u4ee5\u53ca\u89c4\u8303\u96c6\u4e2d\u7684\u6821\u56ed\u975e\u673a\u52a8\u8f66\u505c\u653e\u4f4d\u7f6e\u3002\u5bf9\u4e8e\u9053\u8def\u8fdb\u4e00\u6b65\u62d3\u5bbd\uff0c\u4ee5\u7f13\u51b2\u7eff\u5316\u5e26\u5b9e\u73b0\u4eba\u8f66\u5206\u6d41\uff0c\u4e5f\u6709\u52a9\u4e8e\u7f13\u89e3\u4ea4\u901a\u7684\u7d27\u5f20\u5c40\u9762\u3002<\/p>\n

\u573a\u5730\u7a7a\u95f4\u8bbe\u8ba1\u4e0d\u4ec5\u63d0\u5347\u6821\u56ed\u5f62\u8c61\u9700\u6c42\uff0c\u800c\u4e14\u540c\u65f6\u6ee1\u8db3\u4e86\u5468\u8fb9\u5c45\u6c11\u7684\u591a\u79cd\u4f7f\u7528\u573a\u666f\u9700\u6c42\uff1a\u96c6\u5408\u4f11\u61a9\uff0c\u6162\u884c\uff0c\u53c2\u89c2\u6253\u5361\uff0c\u6821\u53f2\u5ba3\u4f20\u7b49\u529f\u80fd\u3002\u6210\u4e3a\u4e86\u5468\u8fb9\u5c45\u6c11\u6d25\u6d25\u4e50\u9053\u7684\u5730\u65b9\u3002<\/p>\n

1.”The Hundred-Year Academic Corridor” – embodying the school’s century-long legacy<\/p>\n

To achieve a well-designed “facade” for the campus, the design team conducted extensive research on campus design cases both domestically and internationally. Drawing inspiration from central campus landscapes that offer openness to the city, the team created a natural and expansive scenic pathway known as “The Hundred-Year Academic Corridor”. We transformed the history of the campus into tangible design elements and integrated them as nodes in the landscape design. The team also carefully selected materials that match the style of the original school inscription stone and gate to create a sense of historical depth. In terms of planting design, the original arbor trees on site were completely preserved to serve as a reminder of campus memories, while easy-to-maintain shrubs were added to create a comfortable and natural plant space.<\/p>\n

2.Optimize transportation flow through purposeful design<\/p>\n

In the SCUT South Gate vicinity, urban roads intersect diagonally, with a large amount of both pedestrian and vehicular traffic. The new design reallocates green space on adjacent road sections, using landscaping as a barrier to separate pedestrians from vehicles while preserving existing trees, enhancing the overall walking experience on campus.<\/p>\n

The new design includes designated recreational and viewing areas that are adorned with lush flowers and trees. Additionally, we have allocated dedicated parking spaces for non-motorized vehicles on campus, allowing for the possibility of widening the roads and creating a green space buffer between pedestrians and vehicles to alleviate the current traffic congestion.<\/p>\n

3.Create an inclusive space open to the city<\/span><\/p>\n

The design of the space not only satisfies the requirement of improving the campus image, but also meets the various needs of the surrounding neighborhood for different uses such as social interaction, walking, sight-seeing and photo-taking, promoting the school’s history, and more. The site has become a popular spot among local residents.<\/p>\n
