Turenscape <\/strong><\/a>: In the bustling urban heart of Bangkok, our team has transformed the site of a former tobacco factory into a low-maintenance regenerative system that intercepts and reduces the destructive force of storm water, filters contaminated water and provides much-needed wildlife habitat. In addition, Benjakitti Forest Park now provides the largest public recreational space for residents of downtown Bangkok and its environs, and has become a new cultural symbol for the world-renowned vibrancy of Thailand\u2019s capital city. The project, completed at low cost on a compressed timeframe of just 18 months, offers a replicable modular approach to urban engineering that can transform lifeless, concrete-paved ground into a resilient living ecosystem that provides a full range of ecosystem services.<\/p>\n

Located in the\u00a0Chao Phraya River Delta, Bangkok is a densely populated city with more than 10.5 million residents.\u00a0<\/span> The urban area is flat and low-lying, with an average elevation of just 1.5 metres (4\u00a0ft. 11 in.) or less.\u00a0<\/span> Most of the area was originally\u00a0swampland, which was gradually drained with canals and extensive groundwater pumping and irrigated for agriculture. <\/span> The region experiences a monsoon\u00a0climate with an average precipitation of\u00a0about 1500 mm (59 in) per year. <\/span> Extensive groundwater pumping has caused severe subsidence; <\/span> that, coupled with the effects of global warming, has resulted in increased flood risk due to Bangkok\u2019s low elevation and inadequate drainage infrastructure. <\/span> Heavy downpours cause urban runoff\u00a0to overwhelming the drainage systems, which in turn leads to severe flooding that affects much of the city.<\/span><\/p>\n

The project is located in central Bangkok\u2019s Khonti District, with an area of about 102 acres. <\/span> The site was formerly a tobacco factory, densely occupied with single-story warehouses with a number of canopy trees scattered in between. <\/span> The site is surrounded by Phaisingto Canal to the north, which was contaminated with urban runoff and sewage; <\/span> Duang Phithak Urban Expressway to the west, which cut the site off from the adjacent community; <\/span> an artificial lake to the east; <\/span> and a hospital, hotel and the Queen Sirikit National Convention Centre to the south. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u573a\u5730\u4e2d\u5171\u6709\u4e54\u6728\u670991\u4e2a\u54c1\u79cd\u3001865\u682a\uff0c\u4ee5\u5782\u53f6\u6995\uff08Ficus benjamina\uff09\u3001\u83e9\u63d0\u6811\uff08Ficus religiosa\uff09\u3001\u76fe\u67f1\u6728\uff08Peltophorum pterocarpum\uff09\u3001\u814a\u80a0\u6811\uff08Cassia fistula\uff09\u3001\u9178\u8c46\uff08Tamarindus indica\uff09\u3001\u6767\u679c\uff08Mangifera indica\uff09\u4e3a\u4e3b\uff1b\u80f8\u5f841m\u4ee5\u4e0a\u7684\u4e54\u6728\u670949\u682a\u3002\u9664\u573a\u5730\u4e1c\u90e8\u53ca\u5355\u5c42\u5382\u623f\u95f4\u6563\u5e03\u7684\u4e00\u4e9b\u6797\u836b\u5927\u6811\u5916\uff0c\u8fd9\u4e9b\u4e54\u6728\u4e3b\u8981\u5206\u5e03\u4e8e\u9053\u8def\u4e24\u4fa7\uff0c\u5176\u4e2d\u6995\u6811\u53d1\u8fbe\u7684\u6839\u7cfb\u5df2\u7ecf\u548c\u90e8\u5206\u9053\u8def\u878d\u4e3a\u4e00\u4f53\u3002\u56e0\u6b64\uff0c\u5982\u4f55\u4fdd\u62a4\u8fd9\u4e9b\u6811\u6728\u5e76\u4f7f\u5176\u4e0e\u573a\u5730\u672a\u6765\u529f\u80fd\u89c4\u5212\u76f8\u5951\u5408\uff0c\u5c31\u6210\u4e86\u6446\u5728\u8bbe\u8ba1\u56e2\u961f\u9762\u524d\u7684\u4e00\u9053\u96be\u9898\u3002
\n\u6b64\u5916\uff0c\u672c\u9879\u76ee\u7684\u9884\u7b97\u6781\u4e3a\u6709\u9650\uff08\u4e0a\u9650\u4e3a20\u7f8e\u5143\/m2\uff09\uff0c\u540c\u65f6\u5728\u9879\u76ee\u5de5\u671f\u4e0a\u8981\u6c4210\u4e2a\u6708\u5185\u5efa\u6210\u2014\u2014\u540e\u56e0\u65b0\u578b\u51a0\u72b6\u75c5\u6bd2\u611f\u67d3\u75ab\u60c5\uff0c\u6700\u7ec8\u8981\u6c42\u4e8e18\u4e2a\u6708\u5185\u5efa\u6210\u3002\u51fa\u4e8e\u5efa\u8bbe\u901f\u5ea6\u8003\u8651\uff0c\u9879\u76ee\u7684\u5b9e\u65bd\u4e3b\u4f53\u786e\u5b9a\u4e3a\u672c\u5730\u90e8\u961f\u5de5\u7a0b\u5175\uff0c\u56e0\u5176\u7f3a\u4e4f\u666f\u89c2\u7c7b\u9879\u76ee\u5efa\u8bbe\u7ba1\u7406\u7ecf\u9a8c\uff0c\u9700\u8981\u91c7\u53d6\u6613\u4e8e\u65bd\u5de5\u7684\u8bbe\u8ba1\u7b56\u7565\u3002\u53e6\u5916\uff0c\u5728\u672c\u9879\u76ee\u4e4b\u524d\u843d\u6210\u7684\u68ee\u6797\u516c\u56ed\u4e00\u671f\u7ef4\u62a4\u6210\u672c\u8f83\u9ad8\uff0c\u5728\u6d88\u8017\u4e86\u5927\u91cf\u6c34\u8d44\u6e90\u7528\u4e8e\u704c\u6e89\u7684\u60c5\u51b5\u4e0b\uff0c\u6811\u6728\u957f\u52bf\u4f9d\u7136\u582a\u5fe7\uff0c\u56e0\u6b64\u5982\u4f55\u964d\u4f4e\u540e\u7eed\u7ef4\u62a4\u6210\u672c\u4e5f\u6210\u4e3a\u4e86\u672c\u9879\u76ee\u7684\u6311\u6218\u4e4b\u4e00\u3002<\/p>\n

In addition to the challenges of the site itself, the budget for this project was limited (ultimately, it was capped at 20 US Dollars per square meter), and the project was expected to be completed just 18 months. An additional challenge was that the project was overseen by the army, which did not have extensive experience managing landscape projects. In addition to a high potential for flooding, the canal on the northern edge of the site is heavily contaminated. Except for the creation of a small museum for the tobacco factory and a sports center, there were no programmatic requirements for the site. Our team\u2019s design was selected through an international competition.<\/p>\n

\u4e3a\u4e86\u5e94\u5bf9\u573a\u5730\u9762\u4e34\u7684\u591a\u91cd\u6311\u6218\uff0c\u9879\u76ee\u88ab\u6784\u60f3\u4e3a\u4e00\u4e2a\u80fd\u591f\u4e3a\u8fd9\u5ea7\u9ad8\u5bc6\u5ea6\u57ce\u5e02\u63d0\u4f9b\u5168\u9762\u751f\u6001\u7cfb\u7edf\u670d\u52a1\u7684\u4e2d\u592e\u516c\u56ed\uff1a\u516c\u56ed\u9700\u63d0\u4f9b\u751f\u6001\u8c03\u8282\u670d\u52a1\uff0c\u9002\u5e94\u65f1\u96e8\u4ea4\u66ff\u7684\u70ed\u5e26\u5b63\u98ce\u6c14\u5019\uff0c\u8bbe\u8ba1\u7684\u9762\u79ef\u5171\u8ba1187 500m3\u7684\u96e8\u6d2a\u8c03\u84c4\u7a7a\u95f4\u80fd\u591f\u4fdd\u969c10\u5e74\u4e00\u9047\u964d\u96e8\u4e0d\u5916\u6392\uff1b\u63d0\u4f9b\u4f9b\u7ed9\u670d\u52a1\uff0c\u5c06\u53d7\u6c61\u67d3\u7684\u52a3\u2164\u7c7b\u6c34\u51c0\u5316\u4e3a\u2162\u7c7b\uff1b\u63d0\u4f9b\u652f\u6301\u670d\u52a1\uff0c\u521b\u9020\u6797-\u8349-\u6e7f\u5730\u751f\u6001\u7cfb\u7edf\uff0c\u4e3a\u672c\u5730\u91ce\u751f\u52a8\u7269\u63d0\u4f9b\u591a\u79cd\u6816\u606f\u5730\uff1b\u63d0\u4f9b\u6587\u5316\u670d\u52a1\uff0c\u4e3a\u57ce\u5e02\u5c45\u6c11\u4e0e\u6e38\u5ba2\u7684\u6e38\u61a9\u6d3b\u52a8\u63d0\u4f9b\u4e9f\u9700\u7684\u591a\u79cd\u4f11\u95f2\u8bbe\u65bd\u548c\u5927\u578b\u516c\u5171\u7a7a\u95f4\u3002\u4e3a\u4e86\u5b9e\u73b0\u8fd9\u4e9b\u76ee\u6807\uff0c\u8bbe\u8ba1\u56e2\u961f\u5236\u5b9a\u4e86\u4ee5\u4e0b\u8bbe\u8ba1\u7b56\u7565\u3002<\/p>\n

In addressing the multiple challenges of the site and its dense urban surroundings, the project was envisioned as a central park capable of providing holistic ecosystem services to the city, including storm water regulation to adapt to the changing monsoon climate, as a demonstration of a nature-based solution for filtering polluted urban runoff and providing life support for native species, <\/span> as well as providing badly needed public space for daily recreational activities and other cultural services. <\/span> Three strategies guided our work to meet these objectives.<\/span><\/p>\n

All existing trees on site were preserved and integrated into the park design. <\/span> To keep the budget low, all existing main roads were to be preserved. <\/span> Existing factory buildings were repurposed to house the sports center and museum, which are fully integrated into the landscape. <\/span> The demolished concrete materials were recycled for the earthwork foundation and paving.<\/span><\/p>\n

Each of the three major wetlands is designed to have two depths: a shallow, terraced shoreline and a deeper core area. In order to meet the design requirements of low budget and short cycle, the existing resources of the site were reclaimed and reused, and integrated into the landscape system design of the park. The main roads of the site will be preserved to form a new parkway system on this basis; Minimize intervention, preserve the existing trees and understory space to the maximum extent possible, and recycle the concrete material after the demolition of the plant for the construction of the island’s earthwork foundation and slope reinforcement, as well as for the park’s paving material. This patterned landscape can be filled in place and stacked into an island with only one excavator, thus minimizing construction costs.<\/p>\n

The modulated landform with diverse micro-environments was sown with seeds and planted with tree seedlings, creating a foundation for the subsequent evolution of a semi-natural plant community. The result is a low-maintenance mosaic of vegetation that will be continually and spontaneously enriched with native species. A symbiotic ecological interrelationship between fauna and flora is developing, and the \u201cmessiness\u201d of the constructed wetland is creating a new, highly dynamic and diverse aesthetic that sharply contrasts with the surrounding urban landscape.<\/p>\n

Despite having been built on an extremely compressed timeframe, Benjakitti Forest Park has proven a great success. While much of Bangkok flooded last summer, the park and its immediate vicinity did not. The water-quality remediating wetland is performing well and produces enough water to keep the wetland alive through the dry season. A rich variety of birds and other wildlife has taken up residence in the park. The most striking achievement is that this naturally regenerative system is now the largest park in densely populated central Bangkok and attracts tens of thousands of visitors daily, who use it for a wide variety of activities, including jogging and cycling, family gatherings, school commencements, picnics, dates and wedding photographs. It has been celebrated extensively on social media as a new symbol of Thailand\u2019s capital city.<\/p>\n
