James Stockwell Architect<\/strong><\/a>: The earth-filled concrete plates of Bunkeren are balanced carefully on a coastal site within the unceded lands of the Awabakal People, in Whitebridge, a southern suburb of Newcastle. The project is an incredibly photogenic study in concrete textures and form, containing subtle nods to the kinds of architectural references one might expect from a collaboration between experienced architect James Stockwell and Danish-Australian clients with an eye for design. Despite this, Bunkeren is more than finely crafted details and dramatic concrete cantilevers. At its heart, the building is an attempt to actively dismantle the object qualities of the architecture in favour of ambiguous, landscape-driven spaces of discovery and inhabitation.<\/p>\n

At the same time, however, The project\u2019s location on a dramatic sloping site with spectacular bushland and ocean views also provided a unique opportunity to challenge more conventional massing strategies by prioritising connections to the immediate landscape, something James sees as respecting a set of existing flows through the site. \u201cOften people just build bang in the middle of a site and then across the contour to see the view, and that blocks off the natural systems. The way we set up this plan is really to allow passages of water and wildlife through and around. The building is partially dug-in but the idea is that, if you\u2019re on a steep site like this, there\u2019s a journey to be made by animals yourself and by water. It also gives you the ability to go from inside to outside on level ground. When people build up high to look at the view, they can\u2019t easily make use of the spaces behind and in front of the house.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u8fd9\u680b\u5761\u5730\u4f4f\u5b85\u9664\u4e86\u4e00\u4e2a\u5305\u542b\u5165\u53e3\u548c\u4e3b\u5367\u5ba4\u7684\u5c0f\u7a7a\u95f4\u5916\uff0c\u51e0\u4e4e\u5b8c\u5168\u63a9\u76d6\u4e86\u65c1\u4fa7\u7684\u8857\u9053\u3002\u867d\u7136\u9879\u76ee\u624d\u843d\u6210\u4e0d\u4e45\uff0c\u4f46\u6df7\u51dd\u571f\u677f\u4e2d\u7684\u82b1\u56ed\u5df2\u7ecf\u5f00\u59cb\u53d1\u6325\u5b83\u7684\u4f5c\u7528\uff0c\u6210\u4e3a\u5c06\u5efa\u7b51\u4e0e\u5e7f\u9614\u8fdc\u666f\u8fde\u63a5\u5728\u4e00\u8d77\u7684\u5c4f\u969c\u3002\u8bbe\u8ba1\u5e08James\u4ece\u6700\u521d\u7684\u573a\u5730\u8003\u5bdf\u4e2d\u4e86\u89e3\u5230\uff0c\u9879\u76ee\u867d\u5730\u5904\u6cbf\u6d77\uff0c\u4f1a\u53d7\u5230\u4e00\u4e9b\u5f3a\u98ce\u548c\u66b4\u96e8\u7684\u5f71\u54cd\uff0c\u4f46\u5176\u4f4d\u4e8e\u5cac\u89d2\u4e4b\u95f4\u7684\u5730\u7406\u4f4d\u7f6e\u540c\u6837\u4e3a\u5176\u63d0\u4f9b\u4e86\u4e00\u5b9a\u7684\u4fdd\u62a4\uff1a”\u6211\u7b2c\u4e00\u6b21\u6765\u5230\u8fd9\u91cc\u7684\u65f6\u5019\u5c31\u53d1\u73b0\uff0c\u8fd9\u513f\u7684\u690d\u7269\u751f\u957f\u5f97\u5f88\u597d”\u3002\u5728 19 \u4e16\u7eaa\u672b 20 \u4e16\u7eaa\u521d\u7684\u6b96\u6c11\u65f6\u671f\uff0c\u8be5\u5730\u533a\u5f00\u53d1\u5efa\u8bbe\u4e86\u5927\u578b\u690d\u7269\u56edMr Bull\u2019s Garden\uff0c\u56ed\u5185\u79cd\u690d\u4e86\u4ece\u5168\u7403\u5404\u5730\u5f15\u8fdb\u7684\u690d\u7269\u3002<\/p>\n

Nestled into the hillside, traces of the building are almost completely camouflaged from the street, save for a small volume containing the entrance and main bedroom. Though it has been barely a year since the project\u2019s completion, the gardens contained within the concrete plates are already beginning to fulfil their role as shrouds that stitch the building together with the wider landscape. As James understood from his initial visits, while the site\u2019s coastal aspect exposes it to some of the stronger winds and rainstorms that move across the region, its situation between the headlands also offers some protection: \u201cIt was evident when I visited for the first time that things grow well here.\u201d The fertile microclimate of the gully was exploited during the more recent colonial history of the area in the late 19th and early 20th century with the development of Mr Bull\u2019s Garden, a large botanical garden containing imported plants from across the globe.<\/p>\n

\u4ee5\u201c\u4ecb\u7ecd\u666f\u89c2\uff0c\u800c\u4e0d\u662f\u4ecb\u7ecd\u623f\u5c4b\u201d\u4e3a\u8bbe\u8ba1\u7406\u5ff5\uff0cBunkeren\u8ba9\u4eba\u8054\u60f3\u5230\u8fdb\u5165\u82b1\u56ed\u7684\u611f\u89c9\u3002\u4ece\u5f53\u5730\u52a8\u690d\u7269\u7fa4\u4e2d\u6c72\u53d6\u7075\u611f\uff0c\u5c06\u73b0\u6709\u7684\u751f\u6001\u7cfb\u7edf\u5ef6\u4f38\u5230\u623f\u5c4b\u7684\u6df7\u51dd\u571f\u7ed3\u6784\u4e0a\u3002\u5c4b\u9876\u82b1\u56ed\u4e0e\u5468\u56f4\u7684\u704c\u6728\u4e1b\u76f8\u6620\u6210\u8da3\uff0c\u5176\u4e0a\u79cd\u690d\u7740\u4e00\u4e9b\u672c\u571f\u690d\u7269\uff0c\u5982\u5f02\u6728\u9ebb\u9ec4\u3001\u73ed\u514b\u6728\u548c\u9ec4\u8102\u6728\u7b49\u3002\u4ece\u4e0a\u5c42\u8fdb\u5165\u5c4b\u5185\uff0c\u4e00\u9762\u5f27\u5f62\u6df7\u51dd\u571f\u5899\u5c06\u4e3b\u5367\u3001\u5957\u623f\u548c\u6b65\u5165\u5f0f\u8863\u5e3d\u95f4\u9694\u5f00\uff0c\u5f15\u5bfc\u8bbf\u5ba2\u6cbf\u697c\u68af\u4e0b\u5230\u4e00\u5c42\u3002Bunkeren\u65e2\u5750\u843d\u5728\u5730\u8868\u4e4b\u4e0a\uff0c\u53c8\u5d4c\u5165\u5730\u9762\u4e4b\u4e2d\uff0c\u987a\u7740\u503e\u659c\u7684\u5730\u52bf\u9010\u6e10\u5c55\u5f00\u3002James\u89e3\u91ca\u9053\uff1a”\u6211\u975e\u5e38\u559c\u6b22\u90a3\u4e9b\u8ba9\u5730\u8868\u53d8\u5f97\u6a21\u7cca\u7684\u8bbe\u8ba1\u601d\u8def\uff0c\u8fd9\u4f1a\u8ba9\u4eba\u89c9\u5f97\u5efa\u7b51\u4e00\u534a\u5728\u571f\u5730\u4e2d\uff0c\u4e00\u534a\u5728\u571f\u5730\u4e0a\uff0c\u968f\u7740\u65f6\u95f4\u7684\u63a8\u79fb\uff0c\u8fd9\u79cd\u6a21\u7cca\u7684\u611f\u89c9\u4f1a\u5f97\u5230\u5f3a\u5316\u3002<\/p>\n

Providing \u201can introduction to the landscape, and not the house\u201d on approach, Bunkeren recalls this experience of a descent into a garden but takes its cues from the local flora and fauna of the site context in order to extend the existing ecosystem over the house\u2019s concrete structure. Mirroring the surrounding bushland, the roof gardens contain local species such as Allocasuarina, prostrate banksia and Xanthorrhoea. Entering the house on the upper level, a curved concrete wall screens the main bedroom, ensuite and walk-in robe, guiding visitors down the stairs to the ground floor. Unfolding gradually down the sloping site, in truth, Bunkeren is a series of ground floors that simultaneously register as both on the ground and within it. This is deliberately so: \u201cI really like the idea of making the ground plane ambiguous, and so you\u2019re sort of half in the land and half on it and, in time, that becomes even more ambiguous and more blurred,\u201d James explains.<\/p>\n

Bunkeren\u662f\u4e00\u680b\u76f8\u5bf9\u5927\u4f53\u91cf\u7684\u4f4f\u5b85\uff0c\u62e5\u6709\u4e94\u95f4\u5367\u5ba4\u548c\u5de5\u4f5c\u5ba4\uff0c\u4e13\u4e3a\u4e00\u5bf9\u592b\u5987\u53ca\u5176\u56db\u4e2a\u5e74\u5e7c\u7684\u5b69\u5b50\u8bbe\u8ba1\uff0c\u540c\u65f6\u4e5f\u4e3a\u90bb\u91cc\u5173\u7cfb\u5bc6\u5207\u7684\u5927\u5bb6\u5ead\u63d0\u4f9b\u5b9a\u671f\u805a\u9910\u7684\u573a\u6240\u3002\u4f4f\u5b85\u7684\u4e3b\u53a8\u623f\u3001\u9910\u5385\u548c\u8d77\u5c45\u5ba4\u91c7\u7528\u5bbd\u655e\u7684L\u578b\u8bbe\u8ba1\uff0c\u4ece\u5165\u53e3\u697c\u68af\u7684\u5e95\u90e8\u5411\u8fdc\u5904\u6d77\u666f\u65b9\u5411\u5ef6\u4f38\u3002\u5de6\u4fa7\u6cbf\u7740\u8f6e\u5ed3\u7ebf\u5e03\u7f6e\u7684\u662f\u513f\u7ae5\u5367\u623f\u548c\u6d74\u5ba4\uff0c\u5728\u4f4f\u5b85\u4e3b\u4f53\u4e24\u7ffc\u7684\u4ea4\u6c47\u5904\uff0c\u53ef\u4ee5\u901a\u8fc7\u6ed1\u52a8\u9762\u677f\u6216\u655e\u5f00\u5f0f\u95e8\u677f\u5206\u9694\u51fa\u4e00\u4e2a\u53ef\u8c03\u6574\u7684\u8d77\u5c45\u5ba4\u6216\u4e66\u623f\uff0c\u4ee5\u7f13\u548c\u79c1\u4eba\u7a7a\u95f4\u4e0e\u516c\u5171\u7a7a\u95f4\u4e4b\u95f4\u7684\u6d41\u901a\u8def\u5f84\u3002\u53a8\u623f\u540e\u9762\u662f\u4e00\u7cfb\u5217\u8f83\u5c0f\u7684\u50a8\u85cf\u5ba4\u548c\u4e66\u623f\uff0c\u89c6\u7ebf\u7a7f\u8fc7\u516c\u5171\u533a\u57df\u7684\u4e0b\u6c89\u5f0f\u680f\u6746\uff0c\u53ef\u4ee5\u5c06Dudley\u6d77\u6ee9\u7684\u7f8e\u666f\u5c3d\u6536\u773c\u5e95\u3002\u680f\u6746\u5728\u697c\u9762\u4ee5\u4e0b 900 \u6beb\u7c73\u5904\u5f62\u6210\u4e86\u4e00\u6761\u9690\u853d\u7684\u901a\u9053\uff0c\u5c31\u50cf\u662f\u4e00\u6761\u4eba\u9020\u201c\u62a4\u57ce\u6cb3\u201d\uff0c\u5b69\u5b50\u4eec\u5e38\u4f1a\u5728\u6b64\u73a9\u6e38\u620f\u3002<\/p>\n

A relatively large house, Bunkeren is a five-bedroom home and studio, designed for a couple and their four young children as well as to accommodate regular gatherings and meals with close-knit extended family in the area. Part of a generous, L-shaped plan, the project\u2019s main kitchen, dining and living spaces stretch out towards the ocean views from the bottom of the entry stair. To the left, tracking along the contour are the children\u2019s bedrooms and bathroom. At the intersection of these main wings of the home, an adaptable sitting room or study can be generated through sliding panels or left open to soften or buffer the circulation paths between private and communal spaces. Tucked behind the kitchen are a series of smaller storage and study spaces, leaving a set of communal spaces with an uninterrupted view of Dudley Beach afforded by a sunken balustrade that creates a hidden channel 900 millimetres below floor level. This channel, currently functioning as a popular hidden passage for children\u2019s games, has been imagined as another planted \u201cmoat\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u5728\u5bbd\u655e\u8fde\u7eed\u7684\u5efa\u7b51\u8de8\u5ea6\u4e0a\uff0c\u516c\u5171\u533a\u57df\u7684\u6d77\u5cb8\u7ebf\u7f8e\u666f\u4e00\u89c8\u65e0\u4f59\uff0c\u5c4b\u5185\u7cbe\u81f4\u7684\u540a\u706f\u5f62\u6210\u6e29\u6696\u7684\u5149\u6c60\uff0c\u5f3a\u5316\u4e86\u5bb6\u5ead\u6c1b\u56f4\u53ca\u4f4f\u5b85\u529f\u80fd\u3002\u8bbe\u8ba1\u901a\u8fc7\u91c7\u7528\u5728\u5e73\u9762\u4e0a\u6253\u65ad\u7684\u65b9\u5f0f\uff0c\u8ba9\u666f\u89c2\u5728\u9879\u76ee\u4e2d\u6d41\u52a8\u3002\u4ece\u5317\u9762\u9732\u53f0\u53ef\u4ee5\u8fdb\u5165\u4e00\u4e2a\u88ab\u666f\u89c2\u73af\u7ed5\u7684\u62ac\u9ad8\u5f0f\u6df7\u51dd\u571f\u6c34\u6c60\uff0c\u5b83\u5c06\u4e3b\u5c4b\u4e0e\u5ba2\u7528\u5de5\u4f5c\u5ba4\u5206\u9694\u5f00\u6765\uff0c\u5ba2\u7528\u5de5\u4f5c\u5ba4\u7531\u5367\u5ba4\u3001\u8d77\u5c45\u5ba4\u548c\u6d74\u5ba4\u7ec4\u6210\u3002\u5728\u8fdb\u5165\u5357\u8fb9\u7684\u4e0b\u6c89\u5f0f\u4f11\u606f\u5ba4\u4e4b\u524d\uff0c\u4e00\u4e2a\u4e0d\u8d77\u773c\u7684\u7a84\u697c\u68af\u5c06\u53a8\u623f\u4e0e\u4f4f\u5b85\u7684\u6700\u4f4e\u5904\u8fde\u63a5\u8d77\u6765\uff0c\u8fd9\u4e5f\u662fBunkeren\u4e0e\u5730\u9762\u7684\u53e6\u4e00\u79cd\u8054\u7cfb\u3002\u540e\u90e8\u77f3\u5ba4\uff0c\u987e\u540d\u601d\u4e49\uff0c\u662f\u76f4\u63a5\u4ece\u8d2f\u7a7f\u6574\u4e2a\u573a\u5730\u7684\u7802\u783e\u5ca9\u4e0a\u96d5\u523b\u800c\u6210\u7684\u3002<\/p>\n

Across the generous, uninterrupted spans across the building that allow the communal areas to take in sweeping views of the coastline, a delicate field of pendant lights have been used to generate warm pools of light that reinforce the domestic scale of the project and its function as a family home. The design uses breaks in the plan to allow the landscape to flow through the project. Accessible from the north terrace is a raised concrete pool, surrounded by landscape, that separates the main house from a self-contained guest studio, which comprises a bedroom, sitting room and bathroom. Along the southern edge of the plan, prior to stepping down into the sunken lounge space, an unassuming narrow stair connects the kitchen to the lowest part of the house and yet another kind of connection to the ground that Bunkeren sits within. The back of the stone room is, as its name suggests, carved directly from the sandy conglomerate rock that runs through the site.<\/p>\n

Throughout the spaces on the main level of the house, the beautifully crafted concrete walls and plates appear to hover just beyond the edge of the hillside, carefully separated by a narrow glass \u201cmoat\u201d that washes the retaining wall in light filtered through the roof landscape. In the lower space of the stone room\u2014a cellar and room for special family dinners\u2014these refined walls come to rest completely on rock and earth. The room feels almost like a secret space that, upon discovery, reveals the inner workings of the project and the extent of its entanglement with the earth.<\/p>\n
