MVRDV<\/strong><\/a>\uff1aThe Pyramid of Tirana, originally built as a museum dedicated to the communist dictator Enver Hoxha, has been dramatically transformed into a new kind of cultural hub. Reusing the concrete structure, the Pyramid is now an open sculpture in a new park. The park and the sculpture are home to an ensemble of colourful boxes, scattered in and around the original building that house caf\u00e9s, studios, workshops, start-up offices, incubators, festivals, and classrooms where Albanian youth will learn various technology subjects for free. Steps have been added to the building\u2019s sloping fa\u00e7ades, allowing the people of Albania to literally walk all over the showpiece of the former dictator.<\/p>\n

\u5bf9\u8bb8\u591a\u963f\u5c14\u5df4\u5c3c\u4e9a\u4eba\u6765\u8bf4\uff0c\u91d1\u5b57\u5854\u662f\u6218\u80dc\u653f\u6743\u7684\u8c61\u5f81\uff0c\u800c MVRDV \u7684\u8bbe\u8ba1\u7075\u611f\u5219\u6765\u6e90\u4e8e\u4ed6\u4eec\u91cd\u65b0\u5360\u636e\u8fd9\u5ea7\u5efa\u7b51\u7684\u65b9\u5f0f\u3002\u8fd9\u5ea7\u7834\u8d25\u7684\u5efa\u7b51\u957f\u671f\u4ee5\u6765\u4e00\u76f4\u662f\u5730\u62c9\u90a3\u5e74\u8f7b\u4eba\u7684\u4f11\u95f2\u573a\u5730\uff0c\u4ed6\u4eec\u4f1a\u722c\u4e0a\u503e\u659c\u7684\u6a2a\u6881\u7136\u540e\u4ece\u4e0a\u9762\u6ed1\u4e0b\u6765\u2014\u2014\u7136\u800c\u8fd9\u5e76\u975e\u6ca1\u6709\u98ce\u9669\u3002\u73b0\u5728\uff0c\u6cbf\u7740\u659c\u5761\u4e0a\u5347\u7684\u53f0\u9636\u8ba9\u6240\u6709\u5e74\u9f84\u6bb5\u7684\u4eba\u90fd\u53ef\u4ee5\u722c\u5230\u5efa\u7b51\u9876\u90e8\u3002\u5728\u897f\u4fa7\uff0c\u7535\u68af\u4e3a\u90a3\u4e9b\u65e0\u6cd5\u6500\u722c\u53f0\u9636\u7684\u4eba\u63d0\u4f9b\u4e86\u5230\u8fbe\u9876\u90e8\u7684\u901a\u9053\uff0c\u800c\u4e00\u6839\u4fdd\u7559\u7684\u503e\u659c\u6a2a\u6881\uff0c\u8ba9\u4eba\u4eec\u4ecd\u7136\u53ef\u4ee5\u4ece\u9876\u7aef\u6ed1\u5230\u5e95\u90e8\u3002<\/p>\n

First opened as a museum in 1988, the Pyramid of Tirana has led numerous lives. Since the fall of the communist regime, the building was variously used as a radio station, a nightclub, a conference venue, a broadcast centre and, during the 1999 Kosovo War, a base for NATO. The ever-changing uses, along with incomplete previous renovation plans, left behind a patchwork of alterations that made the interior cluttered and dark. In recent decades, the question of what to do with the building proved highly controversial. A study published in 2015, however, showed that the majority of Albanians were opposed to demolishing the building, and in 2017 this desire was honoured when the government announced plans to transform the concrete monolith. This promise was carried out with the help of the Albanian-American Development Foundation (AADF) and the Municipality of Tirana, with the decision made to turn the building into a nurturing environment for young Albanians.<\/p>\n

For many Albanians the Pyramid is a symbol of victory over the regime, and MVRDV\u2019s design was inspired by the way that they had reclaimed the building. After the death of the dictator, the deteriorating structure had long served as a hangout spot for Tirana\u2019s youth, who would climb the sloping beams and \u2013 not without risk \u2013 slide back down. Now, steps rise up the sloping sides, allowing people of all ages to climb to the top of the building. On the western side, a lift gives access to the top of the Pyramid for those who can\u2019t climb the steps, while one beam incorporates a sloped section where people can still slide to the bottom.<\/p>\n

MVRDV \u7684\u521b\u59cb\u5408\u4f19\u4eba Winy Maas \u8bf4\uff1a\u201c\u5f53\u6211\u7b2c\u4e00\u6b21\u770b\u5230\u5730\u62c9\u90a3\u7684\u5e74\u8f7b\u4eba\u8d70\u8fc7\u91d1\u5b57\u5854\u65f6\uff0c\u6211\u88ab\u5b83\u7684\u8c61\u5f81\u610f\u4e49\u548c\u4ee4\u4eba\u96be\u4ee5\u7f6e\u4fe1\u7684\u4e50\u89c2\u7cbe\u795e\u6df1\u6df1\u6253\u52a8\u4e86\u3002\u8003\u8651\u5230\u8fd9\u662f\u5171\u4ea7\u4e3b\u4e49\u56fd\u5bb6\u6709\u53f2\u4ee5\u6765\u6700\u6602\u8d35\u7684\u5efa\u7b51\uff0c\u800c\u5f53\u65f6\u53d7\u538b\u8feb\u7684\u963f\u5c14\u5df4\u5c3c\u4e9a\u4eba\u6c11\u6b63\u751f\u6d3b\u5728\u8d2b\u56f0\u4e4b\u4e2d\uff0c\u6211\u4eec\u5728\u6539\u9020\u8fc7\u7a0b\u4e2d\u53bb\u6389\u4e86\u6240\u6709\u7f8e\u5316\u72ec\u88c1\u7edf\u6cbb\u7684\u6807\u5fd7\u3002\u6211\u4eec\u4fdd\u7559\u4e86\u4e00\u4e9b\u539f\u6709\u7684\u7ec6\u8282\uff0c\u8ba9\u6e38\u5ba2\u4e5f\u80fd\u4e86\u89e3\u5230\u8fd9\u5ea7\u5efa\u7b51\u9ed1\u6697\u7684\u8fc7\u53bb\u3002\u8fd9\u5ea7\u5efa\u7b51\u5c31\u50cf\u516c\u56ed\u4e2d\u7684\u5e9f\u589f\u4e00\u6837\u5b8c\u5168\u5f00\u653e\uff0c\u6240\u6709\u5f69\u8272\u76d2\u5b50\u90fd\u201c\u530d\u5310\u201d\u5728\u5efa\u7b51\u5185\u90e8\u548c\u5468\u56f4\u3002\u8fd9\u5ea7\u7ecf\u8fc7\u6539\u9020\u540e\u7684\u91d1\u5b57\u5854\u73b0\u5df2\u6210\u4e3a\u4eba\u6c11\u7684\u7eaa\u5ff5\u7891\uff0c\u7eaa\u5ff5\u4ed6\u4eec\u6218\u80dc\u5e76\u8d85\u8d8a\u72ec\u88c1\u8005\u7684\u80fd\u529b\u201d\u3002<\/p>\n

\u201cThe first time I saw the Pyramid being walked all over by the youth of Tirana, I was deeply touched by its symbolism and by its incredible optimism\u201d, says MVRDV founding partner Winy Maas. \u201cKeeping in mind this was the most expensive building the communist state had ever realised in a time when the oppressed Albanian population was living in poverty, we removed all symbols glorifying the dictatorship in our transformation. We did keep some of the original details so visitors are also aware of the building\u2019s dark past. The structure is completely open as a ruin in the park, and all these boxes are \u2018squatting\u2019 in and around the structure. Once sardonically called the \u2018Enver Hoxha Mausoleum\u2019, the transformed Pyramid has now become a monument for the people and their ability to overcome and outlive dictators.\u201d<\/p>\n

The work of MVRDV\u2019s design team encompasses and encircles the existing structure, using the structure as a blueprint to which publicly accessible spaces and boxes for education and events were added. A stack of coloured boxes containing rooms for education and events are scattered in and around the structure and the park. These colourful additions are also found on top of the structure, and in the park at the front of the building, giving the surroundings the atmosphere of a festival and even a \u201csquatted\u201d area.<\/p>\n

Around half of these spaces will house non-profit educational institution TUMO Tirana, which provides free afterschool education for 12- to 18-year-olds in new techniques such as software, robotics, animation, music, and film. Founded in Armenia in 2011 and since then spreading throughout Europe, TUMO helps to provide education and opportunities that can be a tool against the \u201cbrain drain\u201d that threatens the economy of countries like Albania. The other half of the coloured boxes will be accessible to the public, hosting rental spaces for caf\u00e9s, restaurants, start-up offices and labs, incubators, studio spaces, and more.<\/p>\n

\u5730\u62c9\u90a3\u91d1\u5b57\u5854\u7684\u6539\u9020\u5c55\u793a\u4e86\u4e00\u5ea7\u5efa\u7b51\u5982\u4f55\u5728\u9002\u5e94\u65b0\u65f6\u4ee3\u8981\u6c42\u7684\u540c\u65f6\uff0c\u4fdd\u7559\u5176\u590d\u6742\u7684\u5386\u53f2\uff0c\u5e76\u8bc1\u660e\u4e86\u5177\u6709\u5386\u53f2\u610f\u4e49\u7684\u7c97\u91ce\u4e3b\u4e49\u5efa\u7b51\u662f\u518d\u5229\u7528\u7684\u7406\u60f3\u9009\u62e9\u3002\u8be5\u9879\u76ee\u8fd8\u7b26\u5408\u8054\u5408\u56fd\u5236\u5b9a\u7684\u4e00\u7cfb\u5217\u53ef\u6301\u7eed\u53d1\u5c55\u76ee\u6807\u3002\u8be5\u9879\u76ee\u6ca1\u6709\u6d6a\u8d39\u5730\u62c6\u9664\u5efa\u7b51\uff0c\u800c\u662f\u4f9d\u7167\u5faa\u73af\u7ecf\u6d4e\u7684\u539f\u5219\u5bf9\u5176\u575a\u56fa\u7684\u6df7\u51dd\u571f\u5916\u58f3\u8fdb\u884c\u6539\u9020\u3002\u7531\u4e8e\u5728\u4e00\u5e74\u4e2d\u7684\u5927\u90e8\u5206\u65f6\u95f4\u91cc\uff0c\u8be5\u5efa\u7b51\u7684\u5927\u90e8\u5206\u7a7a\u95f4\u90fd\u5bf9\u5468\u56f4\u73af\u5883\u4fdd\u6301\u5f00\u653e\uff0c\u56e0\u6b64\u53ea\u6709\u65b0\u589e\u7684\u6559\u80b2\u7a7a\u95f4\u76d2\u5b50\u9700\u8981\u8fdb\u884c\u6e29\u5ea6\u8c03\u8282\uff0c\u4ee5\u51cf\u5c11\u80fd\u6e90\u6d88\u8017\u3002\u5efa\u7b51\u7684\u65b0\u7528\u9014\u4e5f\u4fc3\u8fdb\u4e86\u793e\u4f1a\u7684\u53ef\u6301\u7eed\u53d1\u5c55\uff0c\u5176\u63d0\u4f9b\u7684\u6559\u80b2\u9879\u76ee\u63a8\u52a8\u4e86\u5f53\u5730\u6559\u80b2\u4e8b\u4e1a\u7684\u53d1\u5c55\uff0c\u4e3a\u4e0b\u4e00\u4ee3\u7684\u6210\u529f\u505a\u597d\u4e86\u94fa\u57ab\u3002<\/p>\n

The transformation of the Pyramid shows how a building can be made suitable for a new era, while at the same time preserving its complex history, and demonstrates that historic brutalist buildings are ideal for reuse. The project also meets a number of the Sustainable Development Goals outlined by the United Nations. Rather than wastefully demolish the structure, its robust concrete shell is adapted along circular economy principles. As the majority of the structure is open to the surroundings for most of the year, only the added boxes housing the educational program need to be climate-controlled, reducing energy consumption.
