CRA-Carlo Ratti Associati<\/strong><\/a>\uff1aInternational design and innovation office CRA-Carlo Ratti Associati, together with the late Italo Rota (1953-2024), unveils a project for Milan Design Week 2024 transforming the Brera Botanical Garden into an immersive pathway exploring the multiple uses of rice – from food to experimental construction material. Developed for global energy company Eni along with three Michelin-star chef Niko Romito, sunRICE will be open to the public until 25th April 2024, as part of the INTERNI Cross Vision exhibition.<\/p>\n

\u8be5\u88c5\u7f6e\u4e3b\u8981\u7531\u5efa\u7b51\u6750\u6599\u521d\u521b\u516c\u53f8 Ricehouse \u5f00\u53d1\u7684\u7845\u57fa\u571f\u5de5\u805a\u5408\u7269 RH-GEO \u7ec4\u6210\uff1a\u4e00\u79cd\u6697\u793a\u96f6\u5e9f\u7269\u751f\u4ea7\u8fc7\u7a0b\u7684\u60f0\u6027\u6750\u6599\u3002<\/p>\n

The installation consists of a series of geometrical units created from rice husks – the byproduct of rice processing, which is usually discarded. Evoking the modular, cellular structure of natural materials, starting from a basic triangular form, the units evoke both spatial architectures and Yona Friedman’s metabolic structures, which can grow within nature and transform to accommodate new functions.<\/p>\n

The installation is largely composed of silica-based geopolymer RH-GEO, developed by construction material startup Ricehouse: an inert material that hints at a zero-waste production process.<\/p>\n

\u8be5\u88c5\u7f6e\u4ece\u6280\u80fd\u548c\u57f9\u8bad\u7684\u4ef7\u503c\u51fa\u53d1\uff0c\u4ece\u66f4\u5e7f\u6cdb\u7684\u4f53\u9a8c\u89d2\u5ea6\u63a2\u7d22\u6750\u6599\u7814\u7a76\uff0c\u540c\u65f6\u4e0e\u98df\u7269\u8054\u7cfb\u8d77\u6765\u3002<\/p>\n

\u690d\u7269\u56ed\u672c\u8eab\u662f\u8fd9\u4e2a\u88c5\u7f6e\u4e0d\u53ef\u6216\u7f3a\u7684\u4e00\u90e8\u5206\uff1a\u7c73\u5176\u6797\u4e09\u661f\u4e3b\u53a8\u5c3c\u79d1\u00b7\u7f57\u7c73\u6258\uff08Niko Romito\uff09\u7528\u9f20\u5c3e\u8349\u3001\u8334\u9999\u548c\u5176\u4ed6\u5730\u4e2d\u6d77\u98ce\u5473\u7684\u53ef\u98df\u7528\u690d\u7269\u6765\u5236\u4f5c\u4e86\u4e00\u79cd\u201c\u997c\u5e72\u201d\uff0c\u8c03\u52a8\u4e86\u6700\u540e\u7684\u611f\u5b98\uff1a\u5473\u89c9\u3002<\/p>\n

The installation is part of a wider experience that starts with the values of skills and training, then exploring materials research while linking it to food.<\/p>\n

The Botanical Garden itself is integral to the meaning of the installation: edible plants including sage, fennel, and other Mediterranean flavors are used by Chef Niko Romito to create a \u201ccookie\u201d, engaging the final sense: taste.<\/p>\n

sunRICE was conceived alongside the late Italo Rota, one of the leading Italian designers of recent decades and a long-standing collaborator of CRA. \u201cItalo was a true innovator,\u201d adds Ratti, \u201ccapable not only of giving new answers but of asking himself new questions \u2013 the most difficult thing. No single design can sum up the breadth of his creativity, but his visions on circularity have been a profound inspiration as we finalized this project after he left us.\u201d<\/p>\n

For many years, CRA has been investigating materials innovation as a design studio. These projects include mushroom mycelium with \u201cThe Circular Garden\u201d at Milan Design Week 2019, or coffee grounds and orange peels with Italy\u2019s national pavilion at Expo Dubai 2020. In 2023, the objective of fostering innovation in the construction industry resulted in CRA launching Maestro Technologies, a start-up, whose projects include AI Timber, using artificial intelligence to minimize waste in CLT production by 30%.<\/p>\n

ABOUT ITALO ROTA<\/span><\/strong>
\nItalo Rota (1953-2024) was one of the most important Italian designers of recent decades. In the 1980s he designed the renovation of the Mus\u00e9e d’Orsay, with Gae Aulenti, the rooms of the French School in the Cour Carr\u00e9 of the Louvre, the lighting of the Notre Dame cathedral and along the Seine and the renovation of the center of Nantes in Paris. In the 1990s he returned to Milan and with the new studio he created projects and architecture becoming one of the references of a new architecture. Symbolic are the Museo del Novecento in Piazza Duomo in Milan, the headquarters of Columbia University in New York, the Hindu Temple in Dolvy in India, the Media Library in Perugia. Over the years, Italo Rota has developed unrivaled expertise in the field of museography and exhibitions, creating countless iconic exhibitions and installations. With CRA-Carlo Ratti Associati, he created the Italian Pavilion in Dubai for the EXPO Dubai 2020, the creative direction of the MEET Digital Culture Center projects in Milan, Casa Mutti in Parma, MAE Museum in Fiorenzuola d’Arda, AGO Museums Modena.<\/span><\/p>\n
