Third Space: The Haveli of Creativity, Curiosity and Community is a learning and discovery centre for all ages, that offers world-class facilities for educational programmes, informal learning, socialising and performing arts.<\/p>\n

Intended as a \u2018third space\u2019 \u2013 a place without boundaries beyond home or school, local children and people of all ages are encouraged to encounter and explore diverse, hands-on activities to better understand more about the world and their place within it. The new centre can host up to 2,000 visitors a day, offering a broad range of activities and workshops, providing much-needed resourcesto the people of Udaipur.<\/p>\n

Third Space is designed to foster Dharohar\u2019s key principles of openness, accessibility, and inclusivity, resulting in a free, unrestricted space which ignites curiosity, creativity and a sense of community forvisitors, volunteers and staff. The new centre features a flexible entrance space for performances and community gatherings, a cinema, performing arts theatre, an interactive exhibition of science and technology, tinkering and maker spaces, workshopping and co-working spaces, a library, a caf\u00e9 and retail space, and a lookout tower to take in surrounding views.<\/p>\n

\u4f5c\u4e3a Dharohar \u548c Studio Saar \u91cd\u65b0\u9020\u6797\u9879\u76ee\u7684\u4e00\u90e8\u5206\uff0c\u201c\u7b2c\u4e09\u7a7a\u95f4\u201d\u7684\u6d3b\u52a8\u3001\u8ba1\u5212\u548c\u8bfe\u7a0b\u4e0e 80 \u516c\u9877\u7684\u5c71\u4e18\u76f8\u8fde\u3002\u5728\u8fd9\u4e2a\u96c4\u5fc3\u52c3\u52c3\u7684\u9879\u76ee\u4e2d\uff0c\u5f53\u5730\u7684\u52a8\u690d\u7269\u5c06\u91cd\u65b0\u56de\u5f52\u8be5\u5730\u533a\uff0c\u4ee5\u589e\u52a0\u751f\u7269\u591a\u6837\u6027\uff0c\u4e24\u4e2a\u9879\u76ee\u7684\u6574\u5408\u5c06\u63d0\u4f9b\u66f4\u591a\u7684\u5b66\u4e60\u673a\u4f1a\uff0c\u5c06\u793e\u533a\u4e0e\u5f53\u5730\u7684\u751f\u6001\u7cfb\u7edf\u8054\u7cfb\u8d77\u6765\u3002<\/p>\n

Third Space\u2019s activities, programmes and curriculum are connected to 80 hectares of hills that are being rewilded as part of a reforestation project by Dharohar and Studio Saar. The ambitious project will see local flora and fauna returned to the area to increase biodiversity and the integration of both projects will provide further opportunities for learning, connecting the community with the local ecosystem that sustains it.<\/p>\n

\u8be5\u5efa\u7b51\u7684\u8bbe\u8ba1\u7075\u611f\u6765\u6e90\u4e8e\u4f20\u7edf\u7684\u54c8\u7ef4\u5229\u5ead\u9662\u4f4f\u5b85\uff0c\u5176\u7279\u70b9\u662f\u4e2d\u592e\u5ead\u9662\u88ab\u4e00\u7cfb\u5217\u56de\u5eca\u548c\u906e\u9633\u7684\u5916\u90e8\u6d41\u901a\u7a7a\u95f4\u6240\u73af\u7ed5\u3002\u5efa\u7b51\u5916\u5899\u91c7\u7528\u4e86\u56fe\u6848\u590d\u6742\u7684 Jali \u5c4f\u98ce\uff0c\u65e2\u80fd\u901a\u98ce\uff0c\u53c8\u80fd\u5c06\u5185\u90e8\u4e0e\u5916\u90e8\u8fde\u63a5\u8d77\u6765\u3002\u5916\u5899\u4e0a\u7684\u60ac\u81c2\u5f0f\u5c0f\u58c1\u9f9b\u201cgohkhra\u201d\u8d77\u7740\u6355\u98ce\u7684\u4f5c\u7528\uff0c\u5728\u5efa\u7b51\u7684\u88ab\u52a8\u964d\u6e29\u7b56\u7565\u4e2d\u53d1\u6325\u7740\u5173\u952e\u4f5c\u7528\uff0c\u540c\u65f6\u4e5f\u662f\u9605\u8bfb\u3001\u805a\u4f1a\u548c\u653e\u677e\u7684\u8da3\u5473\u51f9\u5ba4\u3002\u5f27\u5f62\u94a2\u5236\u5e73\u53f0\u73af\u7ed5\u5ead\u9662\uff0c\u662f\u4e00\u4e2a\u89c2\u666f\u5e73\u53f0\uff0c\u6e38\u5ba2\u53ef\u4ee5\u5728\u6b64\u89c2\u5bdf\u4e0b\u9762\u7684\u6d3b\u52a8\u9879\u76ee\u3001\u6500\u5ca9\u5899\u548c\u8868\u6f14\u533a\u3002\u8be5\u5efa\u7b51\u5728\u591a\u4e2a\u697c\u5c42\u79cd\u690d\u4e86\u672c\u5730\u6811\u6728\u548c\u690d\u7269\uff0c\u6709\u52a9\u4e8e\u8fa8\u522b\u65b9\u5411\uff0c\u5e76\u5c06\u81ea\u7136\u5e26\u5165\u4e2d\u5fc3\u7684\u4e2d\u5fc3\u5730\u5e26\u3002<\/p>\n

The building\u2019s design draws inspiration from traditional havelis courtyard homes, featuring a central courtyard surrounded by a series of cloisters and shaded external circulation space. The facades feature intricate patterned Jali screens that provide ventilation while connecting the inside to the outside. Small, cantilevered niches in the fa\u00e7ades, known as gokhra, act as wind catchers, playing a key role in the building\u2019s passive cooling strategy and doubling as playful alcoves for reading, meeting and relaxing. A curved steel deck weaves around the courtyard and serves as a viewing platform allowing visitors to observe the programme of activities, climbing wall and performance area below. The structure is populated by native trees and planting at multiple levels, aiding with wayfinding, andbringing nature into the heart of the centre.<\/p>\n

Cut-outs from the building\u2019s local white marble screenwork and gokhra are used as floor tiles, creating a positive-negative relationship between facades and floors, while cut-outs from the metal screens form chainmail screens and doors. Waste marble rubble and lome mortar from nearby mines form the masonry walls and marble dust replaces some of the cement and sand content in the concrete mix \u2013resulting in a whiter finish that more effectively reflects the sun\u2019s heat.<\/p>\n

The roof acts as an adventurous playscape, offering spaces for parkour and skateboarding, and features a woven bamboo canopy to provide solar shading, designed in collaboration with Webb Yates Engineers. Bamboo was chosen for the canopy and local weavers will be employed in its ongoing maintenance, resulting in a low-cost, low-carbon solution that creates steady local employment and reinforces the preservation of a traditional craft.<\/p>\n

Third Space is now open to the public. Models, photographs, drawings, visualisations and a film of Third Space will be featured alongside <\/span><\/span><\/span>Studio Saar\u2019s other significant projects in the practice\u2019s upcoming exhibition Craft, Community and <\/span><\/span>Connection as part of the 2024 London Festival of Architecture (LFA). The exhibition celebrates <\/span><\/span>Studio Saar\u2019s vision of creating uplifting spaces and places for all and is taking place at the Crafts <\/span><\/span>Council Gallery in Angel, London from 07 June until 15 June.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
