Matsys\u00a0<\/strong><\/a>+ Lake|Flato:<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0 \u6c47\u6d41\u516c\u56ed\u4f4d\u4e8e\u5723\u5b89\u4e1c\u5c3c\u5965\u6cb3Mission Reach\u6cb3\u6bb5\uff0c\u662f\u4e00\u4e2a\u6559\u80b2\u516c\u56ed\uff0c\u91cd\u70b9\u5173\u6ce8\u6c34\u5728\u533a\u57df\u751f\u6001\u7cfb\u7edf\u4e2d\u7684\u5173\u952e\u4f5c\u7528\u3002\u8be5\u516c\u56ed\u7531Matsys\u4e0eLake | Flato\u5efa\u7b51\u5de5\u4f5c\u5ba4\u3001Rialto\u5de5\u4f5c\u5ba4\u548cArchitectural Engineering Collaborative\u5408\u4f5c\u8bbe\u8ba1\uff0c\u75313.5\u82f1\u4ea9\u7684\u672c\u571f\u79cd\u690d\u30012000\u5e73\u65b9\u82f1\u5c3a\u7684\u591a\u529f\u80fd\u5efa\u7b51\u30016000\u5e73\u65b9\u82f1\u5c3a\u7684\u4e2d\u592e\u4ead\u548c\u5206\u6563\u5728\u516c\u56ed\u5404\u5904\u76843\u4e2a\u8f83\u5c0f\u7684\u201c\u536b\u661f\u201d\u4ead\u7ec4\u6210\u3002\u4e2d\u592e\u4ead\u753122\u7247\u6df7\u51dd\u571f\u201c\u82b1\u74e3\u201d\u7ec4\u6210\uff0c\u8fd9\u4e9b\u82b1\u74e3\u5f62\u6210\u4e86\u4e00\u4e2a\u62f1\u9876\u7f51\u7edc\uff0c\u4e3a\u516c\u56ed\u704c\u6e89\u63d0\u4f9b\u906e\u836b\u5e76\u5f15\u5bfc\u96e8\u6c34\u6d41\u5165\u5730\u4e0b\u84c4\u6c34\u6c60\u3002\u4ead\u5b50\u7684\u8bbe\u8ba1\u7075\u611f\u6765\u81ea\u4e8e\u8be5\u5730\u533a\u8bb8\u591a\u690d\u7269\u901a\u8fc7\u5229\u7528\u66f2\u9762\u7684\u7ed3\u6784\u6548\u7387\u5c06\u96e8\u6c34\u5f15\u5411\u6839\u7cfb\u7684\u65b9\u5f0f\u3002\u6bcf\u4e00\u7247\u82b1\u74e3\u90fd\u662f\u4f7f\u7528\u6539\u8fdb\u7684\u5411\u4e0a\u503e\u659c\u65bd\u5de5\u6280\u672f\u548c\u6570\u5b57\u5236\u9020\u7684\u73bb\u7483\u7ea4\u7ef4\u590d\u5408\u6a21\u5177\u5728\u73b0\u573a\u94f8\u9020\u7684\uff0c\u7136\u540e\u6210\u5bf9\u63d0\u5347\u5230\u4f4d\u4ee5\u5f62\u6210\u7ed3\u6784\u62f1\u95e8\u3002\u4ead\u5b50\u4f53\u73b0\u4e86\u6211\u4eec\u5bf9\u5f62\u5f0f\u3001\u5236\u4f5c\u548c\u6027\u80fd\u6574\u5408\u7684\u6d53\u539a\u5174\u8da3\u3002<\/p>\n

Matsys\u00a0<\/a><\/strong>+\u00a0Lake|Flato:<\/a><\/strong>Located along the Mission Reach section of the San Antonio River, Confluence Park is an educational park focusing on the critical role of water in the regional ecosystems. Designed by Matsys in collaboration with Lake|Flato Architects, Rialto Studio, and Architectural Engineering Collaborative, the park consists of 3.5 acres of native planting, a 2000 square foot multi-purpose building, a 6000 square foot central pavilion, and 3 smaller \u201csatellite\u201d pavilions dispersed throughout the park. The central pavilion is composed of 22 concrete \u201cpetals\u201d that form a network of vaults that provide shade and direct the flow of rainwater into an underground cistern used for the park\u2019s irrigation. The design of the pavilion was inspired by the way many plants in the region direct rainwater to their root system through harnessing the structural efficiency of curved surfaces. Each petal was cast on site using a modified tilt-up construction technique and digitally fabricated fiberglass composite molds and then lifted into place in pairs to form structural arches. The pavilion embodies our deep interest in the integration of form, fabrication, and performance.<\/p>\n

Pavilion Geometry
\nThe development of the central pavilion focused on creating an inspirational and aspirational space that helped communicate the client\u2019s mission in providing environmental education on the topic of water conservation. Using the biomimetic principle of looking towards nature for inspiration, the pavilion geometry is inspired by some plants\u2019 use of doubly curved fronds to cantilever out and collect rainwater and dew and redirect the water towards its root stem. A modular system of concrete \u201cpetals\u201d was developed that collected rainwater and funneled it to the petals\u2019 columnar bases and then on to a central underground cistern.<\/p>\n

\u5728\u5f00\u53d1\u8fd9\u4e9b\u82b1\u74e3\u7684\u8fc7\u7a0b\u4e2d\uff0c\u4e00\u4e2a\u4e2d\u5fc3\u95ee\u9898\u662f\u786e\u4fdd\u5b83\u4eec\u662f\u6a21\u5757\u5316\u7684\uff0c\u4f46\u770b\u8d77\u6765\u4e0d\u91cd\u590d\u3002\u8be5\u8bbe\u8ba1\u4f7f\u7528\u4e0d\u89c4\u5219\u4e94\u8fb9\u5f62Cairo\u74f7\u7816\u4f5c\u4e3a\u5e95\u5c42\u7684\u57fa\u7840\u7f51\u683c\uff0c\u4ee5\u89e3\u51b3\u6210\u672c\u6548\u76ca\u9ad8\u7684\u6a21\u5757\u5316\u548c\u7a7a\u95f4\u4e30\u5bcc\u6027\u4e4b\u95f4\u7684\u7d27\u5f20\u5173\u7cfb\u3002\u4e94\u89d2\u5f62\u88ab\u7ec6\u5206\u4e3a5\u4e2a\u4e09\u89d2\u5f62\uff0c\u53ea\u4ea7\u751f\u4e86\u4e09\u4e2a\u72ec\u7279\u7684\u6a21\u5757:\u4e24\u4e2a\u4e0d\u5bf9\u79f0\u7684\u4e09\u89d2\u5f62\uff0c\u5b83\u4eec\u662f\u5f7c\u6b64\u7684\u955c\u50cf\uff0c\u8fd8\u6709\u4e00\u4e2a\u7b49\u8fb9\u4e09\u89d2\u5f62\u3002<\/p>\n

In developing these petals, one of the central concerns was to make sure that they were modular yet seemingly non-repetitive. The design uses the Cairo tile, an irregular pentagon, as the underlying base grid in order to resolve this tension between cost-effective modularity and the desire for spatial richness. The pentagon is subdivided into 5 triangles in a way that results in only three unique modules: two asymmetrical triangles that are mirrors of each other and one equilateral triangle.<\/p>\n

\u4ece\u8fd9\u4e2a\u4e0d\u89c4\u5219\u7684\u4e09\u89d2\u5f62\u57fa\u7840\u7f51\u683c\u4e2d\uff0c\u53c2\u6570\u6a21\u578b\u88ab\u7528\u6765\u521b\u5efa\u6bcf\u4e2a\u82b1\u74e3\u7684\u4e09\u7ef4\u5b9e\u4f53\u3002\u4ece\u7ed3\u6784\u4e0a\u770b\uff0c\u6bcf\u7247\u82b1\u74e3\u90fd\u662f\u62f1\u5f62\u7684\u4e00\u534a\uff0c\u4ece16\u82f1\u5bf8\u539a\u7684\u5706\u67f1\u5f00\u59cb\uff0c\u9010\u6e10\u53d8\u7ec6\u62104\u82f1\u5bf8\u6df1\u7684\u5f27\u5f62\u5c4b\u9876\u3002\u8868\u9762\u51e0\u4f55\u5f62\u72b6\u7684\u53cc\u66f2\u7387\u6709\u52a9\u4e8e\u82b1\u74e3\u7684\u7ed3\u6784\u521a\u6027\u3002\u6bcf\u4e2a\u82b1\u74e3\u90fd\u901a\u8fc7\u4e24\u4e2a\u7ed3\u6784\u6027\u7684\u9500\u8fde\u63a5\u5230\u5b83\u7684\u6210\u5bf9\u7684\u534a\u62f1\u4e0a\u3002\u901a\u8fc7\u4f7f\u7528\u7c92\u5b50\u6a21\u62df\u7684\u6c34\u6d41\u5206\u6790\uff0c\u6d4b\u8bd5\u82b1\u74e3\u5411\u6b63\u786e\u65b9\u5411\u6392\u6c34\u7684\u80fd\u529b\u3002<\/p>\n

From this irregular triangular base grid, a parametric model was used to create the three-dimensional solids of each petal. Structurally, each petal is half of an arch which starts out as a 16\u201d thick column and tapers to a 4\u201d deep curved roof. The double-curvature of the surface geometry helps with the structural rigidity of the petal. Each petal is connected to its paired half-arch by two structural pin joints. The petals\u2019 capacity to shed water in the proper direction was tested through water flow analysis using particle simulations.<\/p>\n

Pavilion Construction<\/p>\n

The three petal\u2019s formwork was fabricated off of 5-axis CNC milled forms. After milling the foam forms, a 2\u201d thick composite structure composed of inner and outer layers of fiberglass composite with a central core of balsa wood was applied. The formwork was then shipped to the site and positioned in a way that it could be cast as a modified tilt-up wall construction. This avoided the need for a fully enclosed form which decreased the cost and allowed the top and bottom surfaces to have radically different finishes: the bottom is cast against the smooth fiberglass while the top is broom-finished with the broom strokes aligning with the direction of the water flow.<\/p>\n

The Cairo tile geometry was reused at a much smaller scale for the thousands of concrete pavers used throughout the park. Four different inlay patterns were developed for the pavers such that a larger network of branching curves is created. This network is aperiodic and references the bifurcations and deltas of the local watershed.<\/p>\n
