Cocoon Studio<\/a><\/strong>: 300 kilometers west of Beijing, Wulanchabu Xinghe County is the closest natural pasture to Beijing. The Raoli Sea is a precious water source in this pasture.\u00a0The Laolihai Rural Revitalization Project began in 2021. It is an exploration of rural revitalization model that is led by a public welfare foundation, the operation team fully involved in every phase, and supported by the government with the participation of villagers. Cocoon Studio participated in the overall planning, landscape design of the North Bank Ecological Forest, and South Bank Homestay.\u00a0The homestay is the most important piece of the puzzle in the overall blueprint. Its success is related to whether this long termism can develop healthily.<\/span><\/p>\n

Laoli Lake in Xinghe County, a grassland lake that was little-known three years ago, has already occupied a place on social media after the And Sheep Campground on the north bank and the Wushengqidi Homestay on the south bank opened for operation. “Grassland Anaya”, “Little Namtso around Beijing”, “Ulanqab Secret Land”, various labels came one after another. The seeds of rural revitalization planted more than two years ago are slowly taking root and sprouting. The emptiness that first struck us finally begins to echo.<\/span><\/p>\n

2021\u5e74\u6211\u4eec\u7b2c\u4e00\u6b21\u6765\u5230\u6d9d\u5229\u6d77\u65f6\uff0c\u6c11\u5bbf\u9009\u5740\u6240\u5728\u7684\u8d32\u7ea2\u6751\u6751\u6c11\u5df2\u57fa\u672c\u642c\u79bb\uff0c\u53bb\u53bf\u57ce\u6216\u5176\u4ed6\u57ce\u5e02\u8c0b\u5f97\u66f4\u597d\u7684\u751f\u6d3b\u3002\u8427\u745f\u7684\u51ac\u5b63\u66f4\u589e\u6dfb\u4e86\u4e00\u4efd\u7834\u8d25\u3002\u7ecf\u5386\u4e86\u4e24\u5ea6\u6625\u53bb\u51ac\u6765\uff0c\u5bd2\u6691\u4ea4\u66ff\uff0c\u6c11\u5bbf\u7269\u751f\u5176\u5730\u7ec8\u4e8e\u4e8e2023\u5e74\u5341\u4e00\u8fce\u6765\u4e86\u7b2c\u4e00\u6279\u5ba2\u4eba\uff0c\u5e76\u81ea\u6b64\u5411\u4e0b\u751f\u6839\uff0c\u8ff8\u53d1\u751f\u673a\u3002<\/span><\/p>\n

When we first came to Laoli\u00a0Lake\u00a0in 2021, the villagers of Benhong Village, where the homestay was located, had already moved out and sought a better life in the county or other cities. The bleak winter adds a touch of ruin. After experiencing two seasons of spring and winter, alternating between cold and heat, the homestay finally welcomed its first batch of guests on October\u00a01st, 2023, and has since taken root, bursting with vitality.<\/span><\/p>\n

“Get away from the hustle of city life and feel nature” is the architect’s vision for the grassland homestay. The intersection of the building’s sloped roof and the hilly terrain brings the landscape intention of the golden grass slope into the homestay site. 28 guest rooms and Chinese restaurant hidden in the undulating grass slope. Based on this architectural design concept, we reorganized the grading of the site and the height of each retaining wall to further consolidate the scene conceived by the architect.\u00a0The wave-like grass slope seems to come crashing from the surface of the Laoli Lake, and the scattered sheep can follow the stone low wall to interact with the residents in the semi enclosed courtyard.<\/span><\/p>\n

In such a wilderness, it seems that all artificially designed landscapes are too small and unnecessary. However, homestay is a place that focuses on living experience and requires operation and management. Therefore, in addition to the explicit visual landscape, there are more implicit usage requirements that need to be considered. The arrival experience of guests, the logistics flow, how the internal roads can meet the needs of baggage transportation without being too artificial, how to solve the problem of room visual confrontation, how to ensure security without causing visual obstruction, etc.<\/span><\/p>\n

Before the emergence of such a high-end homestay with an average price of 3,000 yuan\/night, Home Inn was the hotel with the best accommodation conditions in Xinghe County. The local construction team\u2019s understanding of landscape construction is very limited. The dredged lake mud was used as material to build the terrain. The alignment and slope were basically based on visual inspection, and the concept of tree selecting was even more impossible. We marked the correct road and terrain locations while taking aerial photography on site, and taught workers step by step how to pour washed stone floors and how to build walls and fences using local materials. There are too many imperfections, but no matter how many imperfections there are, they are eventually tolerated by this landscape. Grass grows, cattle and sheep come, and people in the city come to relax, look up at the stars, and look to nature for answers. This may be what it means to live in the wilderness.<\/span><\/p>\n

The trees at the entrance of the village have been preserved intact, continuing to guard this scenery with great solemnity. They witnessed the transformation of Benhong Village from near desolation to bustling crowds. People from the city walked through this forest to reach the homestay, as if entering another world. The construction of homestay has also made the seemingly monotonous life of herdsmen interesting. Take a carrot to play with the lambs, or sit on the platform by the lake for an afternoon, watching groups of swans swim in the lake. Gazing up at the Milky Way, looking down at herds of cattle and sheep, inhabiting the grasslands, and watching the clouds roll and relax, is the instinctive longing of people who have been curled up in the city for too long.<\/span><\/p>\n

The story of rural revitalization in Laoli Lake is still unfinished, but this “To Be Continued” is no longer hesitant and uncertain. The 100% occupancy rate of homestay during the Dragon Boat Festival this year is the best proof. The opening of the homestay has also provided better job opportunities for local villagers.\u00a0The herd of herdsmen has also become a scenery integrated with homestays.\u00a0“If it weren’t for your coming, I might have been an ordinary villager for the rest of my life.” It is this mutual achievement that gives this land a new lease of life.<\/span><\/p>\n
