YXDesigners<\/strong><\/a>: Longjiang Town in Foshan City’s Shunde District is renowned nationwide for its furniture production. In the yet-to-be-completed Longhu Central Park, YX Designers\u00a0was invited to design\u00a0a public art installation for Qianjin Home, a local enterprise in Longjiang. Established forty-five years ago, Qianjin Home has consistently dedicated itself to the art of wooden furniture making, emerging as a distinguished brand in the field. The wood chosen by Qianjin Home originates from North American black walnut trees. These majestic giants are sliced into planks, transported across oceans to Longjiang, and then meticulously carved into furniture components, while the leftover timber is discarded as waste.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u5728\u539f\u672c\u7684\u65bd\u5de5\u6784\u60f3\u4e2d\uff0c\u6211\u4eec\u5e0c\u671b\u4ee5\u7eaf\u624b\u5de5\u6728\u6784\u7684\u65b9\u5f0f\u6765\u5efa\u9020\u5de8\u6728\u8eaf\u4f53\uff0c\u4f46\u672c\u5730\u7684\u65bd\u5de5\u65b9\u8ba4\u4e3a\u9020\u4ef7\u548c\u5de5\u671f\u90fd\u4f1a\u8d85\u51fa\u9884\u671f\uff0c\u5efa\u8bae\u4ee5\u5176\u6240\u719f\u6089\u7684\u201d\u505a\u6c99\u53d1\u201d\u7684\u65b9\u5f0f\u6765\u505a\uff0c\u201c\u91cc\u9762\u6253\u4e00\u4e2a\u94a2\u67b6\uff0c\u518d\u7528\u6728\u6599\u5305\u8d77\u6765\u201d\u3002\u6211\u4eec\u6b23\u7136\u540c\u610f\u8fd9\u79cd\u5efa\u9020\u65b9\u5f0f\uff0c\u8ba4\u4e3a\u8fd9\u662f\u6709\u8da3\u7684\u2014\u2014\u5728\u4ee5\u5236\u9020\u5ba4\u5185\u5bb6\u5177\u4e3a\u751f\u7684\u9f99\u6c5f\uff0c\u6309\u5f53\u5730\u4eba\u719f\u6089\u7684\u65b9\u5f0f\u6765\u505a\u4e00\u4e2a\u6237\u5916\u5bb6\u5177\uff0c\u662f\u4e00\u4ef6\u987a\u5176\u81ea\u7136\u7684\u4e8b\u60c5\u3002<\/span><\/p>\n

A felled tree becomes part furniture, part refuse. Each piece of furniture signifies the loss of abundant residual material. In response, we envisioned a transformation: repurposing these remnants to reconstruct an imagined giant tree trunk, thereby creating communal furniture for repose and lakeside contemplation within the park. This “Reconstructed Giant Tree<\/b><\/strong>” not only serves as a functional centerpiece but also invites onlookers to contemplate the journey of a single tree within the vast tapestry of global trade.<\/span><\/p>\n

Initially, our design proposed crafting the giant tree trunk entirely from hand-carved wood. However, the local builders raised concerns about the projected costs and extended timelines. They suggested an alternative approach inspired by their expertise in sofa-making, \u201cconstructing a steel framework and enveloping it with wood\u201d. Embracing this method, we found delight in its ingenuity\u2014after all, in Longjiang, where indoor furniture manufacturing thrives, creating an outdoor art piece using familiar techniques felt inherently harmonious.<\/span><\/p>\n

A year after the Reconstructed Giant Tree graced the park, we returned to witness its integration into the natural landscape. To our delight, delicate mushrooms had taken residence upon its surface, wildflowers and grasses had sprung around its base, and a colony of red fire ants had established their home within its structure. The once-divided tree had gracefully returned to the earth, nourishing the cycle of new life. This gradual decay mirrored both a solemn farewell and the reconstruction of the giant tree.<\/span><\/p>\n
