True to its name, the venue combines a whisky\u00a0focused cocktail bar with a traditional Finnish sauna. \u201cThe idea to establish Kyr\u00f6\u00a0Distillery was born in a sauna. The bar and the sauna\u2019s changing rooms are situated on the ground floor of a large\u00a0commercial building. The sauna itself, however, is a prefabricated wooden structure,\u00a0transported to its location in the building\u2019s inner courtyard through a narrow and low\u00a0passageway. The design of the sauna and bar was handled by Studio Puisto, an\u00a0architecture firm specializing in hospitality projects, with construction by Protos\u00a0Demos. Previously, Studio Puisto has designed several sauna restaurants across\u00a0Finland. Kyr\u00f6 Sauna Bar is a pop-up venue open until the end of 2024.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe wanted to bring a piece of Kyr\u00f6 Distillery\u2019s rural home in Isokyr\u00f6 to the busiest\u00a0pedestrian street in the capital,\u201d explains Maiju Koskela, the interior architect\u00a0responsible for the project. Key themes of the design include Ostrobothnian heritage,\u00a0traditional Finnish saunas, and rye\u2014the main ingredient in Kyr\u00f6\u2019s products. These\u00a0themes, along with the temporary nature of the venue, are reflected in the choice of\u00a0materials and the cozy, barn-like atmosphere of the space.<\/p>\n

The venue is divided into three thematic areas. Upon entering from the street, guests\u00a0arrive in a space called Kyr\u00f6\u2019s Barns, featuring dimly lit, barn-like rooms built from\u00a0rough wooden planks. These rooms are suitable for private events and offer limited\u00a0views of the bustling pedestrian street through low, narrow windows. The intimate\u00a0and secluded ambiance evokes the granaries of Ostrobothnia.<\/p>\n

\u8d70\u8fd1\u6851\u62ff\u623f\uff0c\u6e38\u5ba2\u4f1a\u7a7f\u8fc7\u4e00\u6761\u540d\u4e3a\u201c\u9152\u6876\u4ed3\u5e93\u201d\u7684\u8d70\u5eca\uff0c\u8fd9\u91cc\u6709\u917f\u9152\u5382\u7684\u65e7\u5a01\u58eb\u5fcc\u9152\u6876\u6539\u9020\u800c\u6210\u7684\u7ad9\u7acb\u5f0f\u7684\u6728\u684c\uff0c\u8d70\u5eca\u5c3d\u5934\u4fbf\u662f\u6851\u62ff\u623f\u7684\u66f4\u8863\u5ba4\u548c\u536b\u751f\u95f4\u3002<\/p>\n

From the barns, guests ascend to Kyr\u00f6\u2019s Yard, which features a large communal\u00a0bench made of planks and a bar counter constructed from recycled concrete blocks.\u00a0\u201cThe goal of the massive bench is to create a communal atmosphere where even the\u00a0most introverted Finn might strike up a conversation with a stranger,\u201d notes architect\u00a0Olli Keskinen.<\/p>\n

Approaching the sauna, visitors pass through a corridor called the Barrel\u00a0Warehouse, where old whisky barrels from the distillery have been repurposed as\u00a0standing tables. At the end of the corridor are the sauna\u2019s changing rooms and\u00a0restroom facilities.<\/p>\n

The sauna itself is just a few steps away from the courtyard entrance. Its design\u00a0captures the essence of a traditional Finnish sauna, fitting for its future as a more\u00a0permanent fixture in a rural setting. The sauna\u2019s intimate and calming atmosphere is\u00a0created with low, narrow windows, dark natural materials, minimalist lighting, and a\u00a0traditional wooden slatted floor. Despite its modest size of 18 square meters, the\u00a0sauna can accommodate 14 bathers, with room for an additional dozen guests to\u00a0cool off outside between sauna sessions. Washing is done in the traditional manner:\u00a0water is poured into a basin, and guests use a ladle to wash themselves\u2014just as\u00a0Finns have done for centuries.<\/p>\n

As a temporary pop-up project, sustainability and material reuse were prioritized.\u00a0The contractor, Protos Demos, fully embraced the challenge, sourcing materials\u00a0such as exhibition wall panels and surplus concrete blocks from construction sites.\u00a0The design also considered the disassembly and reusability of components. After the\u00a0pop-up period ends, the modular sauna will continue its story at Kyr\u00f6 Distillery\u2019s\u00a0visitor center in Isokyr\u00f6, serving both festival-goers and tourists.<\/p>\n
