VIASCAPE design<\/a><\/strong>\uff1a<\/span>The landscape design of East Shanghai High School Senior Division \uff08hereinafter ESHS\uff09is for a new campus of Shanghai High School located in Lin’gang, Pudong district. Its\u00a0architectural design implements highly efficient master planning. The north functional zone (classrooms, library, offices, theatre, dormitory\u00a0etc.) facing Ganlan Road to the north is presented by a high-density building\u00a0complex\u00a0with a courtyard typology\u00a0and looks like a ‘city’. In contrast, the south\u00a0side features a sense of ‘island’\u00a0with its triangular peninsular shape\u00a0stretching\u00a0into the Lin’gang river system, encompassing\u00a0major sports courts such as soccer, basketball, tennis courts, and an earth-sheltered gymnasium. After an initial workshop with the architectural design team, VIASCAPE design team decided to design\u00a0a continuous E-W ‘creek’, which will physically stress\u00a0shape of south functional zone\u00a0as an ‘island’, between two parts of the campus. And the creek, given its basic feature functions such as rainwater acquisition and purification, dynamic ecological effects production, and its natural wetland appearance, will functionally and aesthetically resonate with the ‘city’\u00a0and ‘island’\u00a0in terms of user behavior and place-making.<\/p>\n

\u5357\u4fa7\u7247\u533a\u666f\u89c2\u5219\u57fa\u4e8e\u8fd0\u52a8\u4e0e\u81ea\u7136\u4e3b\u9898\u4ee5\u66f4\u8f7b\u677e\u5730\u65b9\u5f0f\uff0c\u901a\u8fc7\u201c\u5c9b\u201d\u4e0a\u4e0e\u4e0d\u540c\u666f\u89c2\u7a7a\u95f4\u4e0e\u8fd0\u52a8\u573a\u5730\u8026\u5408\u7684\u201c\u5f84\u201d\u4e3a\u7ebf\u7d22\u5c55\u5f00\u8bbe\u8ba1\uff0c\u4ee5\u201c\u5c9b\u201d\u4e0a\u7684\u7acb\u4f53\u6e38\u89c2\u7a81\u51fa\u5f52\u5411\u81ea\u7136\u7684\u91ce\u8da3\u3002<\/p>\n

In regards to detailed landscape design, we generate a concept of serial ‘courtyard’ according to the spatial feature in the north zone. The courtyards design provides a tranquil atmosphere in the academic\u00a0building and dormitory area. Multiple courtyard\u00a0spaces are\u00a0created to accommodate the social life between the buildings.<\/p>\n

On the contrary, the south zone envisions a more relaxing way based on its\u00a0theme of nature and sports to fashion a sense of wildness. This sense of space is created through the ‘path’ system\u00a0connecting various landscape spaces and sports courts on the island, the ‘path’ system\u00a0is\u00a0a design thread woven into the general blueprint\u00a0as well.<\/p>\n

\u4e0a\u4e2d\u4e1c\u6821\u76f8\u5bf9\u96c6\u4e2d\u7684\u5efa\u7b51\u7ec4\u56e2\u65e2\u662f\u5b66\u751f\u4eec\u5b66\u4e60\u751f\u6d3b\u7684\u201c\u57ce\u201d\uff0c\u4e5f\u56e0\u5176\u9662\u843d\u5f0f\u7684\u5e03\u5c40\u5728\u7a7a\u95f4\u4e0a\u5f62\u6210\u4e86\u4e66\u9662\u7684\u7a7a\u95f4\u610f\u8c61\uff0c\u4e8e\u662f\u6559\u5b66\u4e0e\u4f4f\u5bbf\u533a\u7684\u666f\u89c2\u4e5f\u56e0\u6b64\u5f62\u6210\u4e86\u591a\u4e2a\u76f8\u5bf9\u72ec\u7acb\u53c8\u8fde\u7eed\u7684\u201c\u57ce\u4e2d\u4e4b\u5ead\u201d\u3002\u4e8e\u662f\u6211\u4eec\u5728\u666f\u89c2\u8bbe\u8ba1\u4e0a\uff0c\u4f9d\u636e\u76f8\u90bb\u5efa\u7b51\u7684\u4e0d\u540c\u529f\u80fd\u4e0e\u5f62\u4f53\u7acb\u9762\u7279\u5f81\uff0c\u8bbe\u8ba1\u4e867\u4e2a\u5177\u6709\u660e\u663e\u4e2a\u6027\u7279\u5f81\u5dee\u5f02\u7684\u5ead\u9662\u666f\u89c2\uff0c\u5206\u522b\u662f\uff1a\u6821\u56ed\u4e3b\u5165\u53e3\u7684\u201c\u9010\u6d6a\u5ead\u9662\u201d\u3001\u4e3b\u6559\u5b66\u697c\u5185\u7684\u201c\u4e66\u5c71\u5ead\u9662\u201d\u548c\u201c\u9605\u8bfb\u5ead\u9662\u201d\u3001\u7537\u751f\u5bbf\u820d\u533a\u7684\u201c\u5ca9\u77f3\u5ead\u9662\u201d\u3001\u5973\u751f\u5bbf\u820d\u533a\u7684\u201c\u6c34\u75d5\u5ead\u9662\u201d\u3001\u827a\u672f\u4e2d\u5fc3\u524d\u7684\u201c\u51e0\u4f55\u5ead\u9662\u201d\u3001\u8fdb\u5165\u98df\u5802\u533a\u57df\u7684\u201c\u5f69\u9636\u5ead\u9662\u201d\u3002\u5e76\u7ed3\u5408\u5468\u8fb9\u7b80\u6d01\u7684\u573a\u5730\u8bbe\u8ba1\u4e0e\u7eff\u836b\u4e54\u6728\u8bbe\u8ba1\u5f62\u6210\u4e86\u4e0a\u4e2d\u4e1c\u6821\u96c6\u4e2d\u6559\u5b66\u751f\u6d3b\u533a\u7684\u6574\u4f53\u666f\u89c2\u3002<\/p>\n

The building cluster\u00a0in ESHS is not only the functional\u00a0‘city’\u00a0for students but also deduce some ‘courtyard’ space in the ‘city’ due to the spatial pattern. Therefore, the landscape at the north function zone\u00a0becomes multiple ‘courtyards’\u00a0in the ‘city’\u00a0that are independent and interconnected. We designed 7 distinctive themes for the courtyard\u00a0gardens enclosed within the buildings regarding their functions and fa\u00e7ade genre.<\/p>\n

They are:W<\/i><\/em>ave<\/i><\/em>-riding <\/i><\/em>Courtyard<\/i><\/em>\u00a0at the main entrance;Wisdom Mountain <\/i><\/em>Courtyard<\/i><\/em>\u00a0and Reading <\/i><\/em>Courtyard<\/i><\/em>\u00a0in the main building;Rock <\/i><\/em>Courtyard<\/i><\/em>\u00a0at Boys’\u00a0Dorm complex and Ripple <\/i><\/em>Courtyard<\/i><\/em>\u00a0at Girls’\u00a0Dorm complex;Geometric <\/i><\/em>Courtyard<\/i><\/em>\u00a0in front of the art center and Rainbow Steps<\/i><\/em>\u00a0Courtyard<\/i><\/em>\u00a0at the entrance of dinning hall.<\/span><\/p>\n

The featured courtyards, with the adjacent spaces of\u00a0simple design and green tree canopies, establish the general design\u00a0style of ESHS’s north zone.<\/span><\/p>\n

We design the north zone landscape with an anti-tradition\u00a0method similar to stage scenery\u00a0design. Our design collage multiple courtyards\u00a0into the students’ continuous behavior experience\u00a0to not only help the students possess momentary liberation from the mental constraints of serious teaching and learning processes but also somehow activate social activities between students, and provides some\u00a0interesting outdoor teaching scenes\u00a0in\u00a0ESHS.<\/p>\n

\u4e24\u9762\u4e34\u6cb3\uff08\u5e02\u653f\u6cb3\u9053\uff09\u3001\u4e00\u9762\u4e34\u6eaa\u7684\u8fb9\u754c\u6761\u4ef6\uff0c\u52a0\u4e4b\u5efa\u7b51\u4e0a\u534a\u5730\u4e0b\u8986\u571f\u4f53\u80b2\u9986\u8bbe\u8ba1\u6240\u5f62\u6210\u9686\u8d77\u7684\u7eff\u8272\u5730\u9762\uff0c\u8ba9\u6821\u56ed\u5357\u90e8\u8fd0\u52a8\u533a\u5728\u7a7a\u95f4\u4e0a\u201c\u5c9b\u201d\u7684\u610f\u8c61\u5341\u5206\u6e05\u6670\u3002\u4e0e\u201c\u57ce\u201d\u4e2d\u7cfb\u5217\u201c\u5ead\u201d\u7684\u523b\u610f\u7b56\u5212\u3001\u7cbe\u5de7\u8bbe\u8ba1\u4e0d\u540c\uff0c\u6211\u4eec\u5728\u201c\u5c9b\u201d\u4e0a\u7684\u666f\u89c2\u8bbe\u8ba1\u5219\u5b8c\u5168\u8d70\u5411\u4e86\u4e00\u79cd\u9762\u5411\u5c71\u6c34\u81ea\u7136\u7684\u677e\u5f1b\uff0c\u4ec5\u4ee5\u201c\u5f84\u201d\u4e3a\u7ebf\u7d22\u5f15\u5bfc\u7acb\u4f53\u6e38\u89c2\u4e0e\u7a7a\u95f4\u81ea\u7136\u63a2\u7d22\u3002<\/p>\n

Bordering two canals and one creek, the image of the south zone of the campus is like an island. In contrast to\u00a0the\u00a0delicate design for the courtyard gardens, a more relaxing natural scenery style was adopted for the design of the ‘island’, in which footpaths are\u00a0utilized to guide visiting and spatial exploration into nature.<\/p>\n

The winding geometric curve path is not only a method that meets the requirements of comfortable walking, but also provides more behavioral and spatial possibilities for three-dimensional viewing\u00a0and exploration. At the east\u00a0of the island, F<\/i><\/em>orest <\/i><\/em>P<\/i><\/em>ath<\/i><\/em>\u00a0meanders in the metasequoia forest, providing\u00a0natural exploration opportunities. On top of this, a series of rain gardens are arranged at the turning point of the path. C<\/i><\/em>reek <\/i><\/em>P<\/i><\/em>ath<\/i><\/em>\u00a0at the north is a visual magnet shared with both north and south zones. It is also a route for viewing the process of rainwater acquisition and purification. On top of the ‘path’\u00a0layers, the planting layer\u00a0is presented in a rather relaxing way. The\u00a0design approach that applies multiple layers of plants is abandoned considering the potential maintenance cost. Instead, we use a combination of lawn area, evergreen shrubs, big trees, and ornamental grass as basic structures, targeting at building a simple natural landscape that attracts more natural explorations.<\/p>\n

Based on our study of the history and tradition of Shanghai High School, we reached a consensus with the architectural design team and school authorities, that\u00a0is: the campus landscape design should not only be of aesthetic and functional value but also be experimental and pioneering\u00a0to meet students’ diversified growth and development needs.<\/p>\n

In this context,\u00a0we create a landscape connection\u00a0between the design of W<\/i><\/em>ave<\/i><\/em>-riding <\/i><\/em>Courtyard<\/i><\/em>\u00a0and Dragon Gate Building<\/i><\/em>\u00a0to express the expectation of fish leaping over the dragon gate, and also respond to the history\u00a0of Shanghai High School.\u00a0The continuous spatial experience of the 7 courtyards\u00a0in the ‘city’\u00a0maps the integrity out of the diversity of students’\u00a0study and daily life, encouraging an imagination of the world outside of the campus.\u00a0The dynamic ‘creek’\u00a0of ecological significance in between the ‘city’\u00a0and ‘island’\u00a0will evoke the attention of the ever-evolving nature from the students buried in books. The ‘path’\u00a0system that varies in size and shape will guide the discovery and exploration of natural space, encouraging the pursuit of nature, health, and a green environment. The landscape design of ESHS is a design experiment to encourage and motivate the students to grow a more complete\u00a0personality based on the campus environment.<\/p>\n
