Urbanization has gone with a gradual estrangement between humans and non-human species. Since the advent of the modern zoo, birds have typically been displayed in sealed aviaries, confined to prevent them from flying away. Even as these environments evolve to imitate natural habitats, the roof continues to limit avian movement and reinforces a one-sided way for humans to view birds as the other.<\/p>\n

Reflecting on anthropocentrism, the architects sought an alternative to traditional aviaries: a space that accommodates birds\u2019 autonomous flight and allows interspecies cohabitation. Taking the Sino-French art project Dancing with the Birds as a starting point, GOA used the Earth Valley Theater in Yixing, Jiangsu, China as a test ground to reconstruct an open system in which birds can fly, perch, and roost according to their own logic.<\/p>\n

The architecture, interior, and landscape of the Earth Valley Theater were completed by GOA through an integrated design process. Building on collaboration between disciplines, the team was able to explore an idea resonant with Richard Wagner\u2019s notion of the Gesamtkunstwerk, or total work of art. Together with director Fan Yue and his team, GOA conceived the theater as a single artistic work: from the outset, artists and animal experts worked alongside designers and engineers, integrating avian behavior, topography, sound, light, performance, design and construction into one coherent system.<\/p>\n

Architecture as Land Art<\/p>\n

Design for the Earth Valley Theater began in 2021. After completing a series of design projects in Yixing, GOA received a new commission from a longtime client, Yaohu Town: to design an open-air theater for an \u201cecological narrative show\u201d by director Fan Yue. The site lies at the undeveloped end of a valley on the town\u2019 s southern edge, a gentle landform that opens out in several directions. Rather than placing significant volumes above ground, the architects sought to sink the theater into the valley, allowing it to read as part of the land art.<\/p>\n

\u4e3a\u6b64\uff0c\u5efa\u7b51\u5e08\u5c1d\u8bd5\u4ee3\u5165\u201c\u4eba\u201d\u548c\u201c\u9e1f\u201d\u7684\u89c6\u89d2\uff0c\u53cc\u5411\u89c4\u5212\u5267\u573a\u7684\u7a7a\u95f4\u7ed3\u6784\uff1a\u98de\u9e1f\u5267\u573a\u5bf9\u4eba\u7c7b\u800c\u8a00\uff0c\u662f\u7f13\u89e3\u73b0\u4ee3\u7126\u8651\u7684\u907f\u4e16\u4e4b\u6240\uff1b\u800c\u9e1f\u7c7b\u5219\u9700\u8981\u8fdc\u79bb\u5916\u754c\u55a7\u56a3\u5e72\u6270\u7684\u6816\u606f\u5730\u3002<\/p>\n

Creating a theater for a specific show is different from designing a \u201cgeneric\u201d venue based on established typologies. Here, the logic of space had to be tailored in advance to the logic of the performance. The fact that birds, rather than humans, are the protagonists amplified this challenge.<\/p>\n

In response, the architects approached the theater from both \u201chuman\u201d and \u201cavian\u201d points of view, planning its spatial structure in two directions at once. For visitors, the Earth Valley Theater is conceived as a retreat from urban anxiety; for birds, it must function as a habitat shielded from external disturbance.<\/p>\n

2000\u4f59\u4e2a\u5ea7\u4f4d\u7684\u5267\u573a\u5728\u53e0\u53f0\u80cc\u9762\u5c55\u5f00\u3002\u56e2\u961f\u5e0c\u671b\u5c3d\u53ef\u80fd\u591a\u5730\u5229\u7528\u5e73\u6574\u571f\u5730\uff0c\u4f7f\u5efa\u7b51\u8fb9\u7f18\u8d34\u5408\u5730\u5f62\u3002\u5c71\u8c37\u6210\u4e3a\u4e86\u9650\u5b9a\u5efa\u7b51\u5f62\u6001\u7684\u5bb9\u5668\uff0c\u4f53\u91cf\u4fdd\u6301\u6d41\u52a8\uff0c\u76f4\u81f3\u8fbe\u6210\u7406\u60f3\u7684\u51e0\u4f55\u72b6\u6001\uff0c\u518d\u88ab\u8d4b\u4e88\u529f\u80fd\u3002\u5efa\u7b51\u6c89\u5165\u73af\u7ed5\u7684\u4e18\u9675\u4e2d\uff0c\u540e\u8005\u65e2\u662f\u9e1f\u7c7b\u751f\u6d3b\u7ecf\u9a8c\u7684\u4e00\u90e8\u5206\uff0c\u53c8\u5728\u6f14\u51fa\u5f00\u573a\u540e\u6210\u4e3a\u4e86\u5929\u7136\u7684\u6c89\u6d78\u5f0f\u5e03\u666f\u3002<\/p>\n

\u53e6\u4e00\u6761\u8c37\u5730\u4e0e\u5267\u573a\u6240\u5728\u7684\u5c71\u8c37\u5782\u76f4\uff0c\u5411\u7af9\u6797\u6df1\u5904\u5ef6\u4f38\uff0c\u968f\u5373\u878d\u5165\u5c71\u4f53\uff0c\u9e1f\u820d\u6cbf\u7740\u5b81\u9759\u7684\u8c37\u5730\u5c55\u5f00\uff0c\u4e0e\u5916\u90e8\u4e16\u754c\u6e29\u548c\u5730\u9694\u79bb\u3002\u591a\u53d8\u7684\u5730\u5f62\u62d3\u5c55\u4e86\u821e\u53f0\u2014\u2014\u7fa4\u96c6\u7684\u767d\u9e73\u5c06\u4ece\u72ed\u957f\u7684\u5c71\u8c37\u4e2d\u73b0\u8eab\uff0c\u4f34\u968f\u58f0\u5149\u6548\u679c\uff0c\u8c61\u5f81\u620f\u5267\u7684\u9ad8\u6f6e\u9636\u6bb5\u3002<\/p>\n

The site\u2019s two ends are organized into distinct zones: a stepped plinth containing the public functions such as entrance and ticketing, and an aviary zone for bird habitation. In between lies the auditorium. The plinth, set close to the road, is composed of rectangular volumes that screen the theater from the outside world; the two realms are almost invisible to each other. Passing through one of the three entrance halls into the auditorium, visitors leave daily life behind and cross a threshold between reality and a dreamscape to be created the birds.<\/p>\n

The 2,000-seat auditorium sit behind the plinth. The design maximizes the use of level ground, letting the building\u2019s edges trace the topography. The valley serves as a container that defines the form, which remains fluid until it reaches a desirable geometric state. The building sinks into the encircling hills, which are both part of the birds\u2019 lived environment and, once the performance begins, a natural backdrop.<\/p>\n

A second valley intersects the main one and extends toward bamboo grove. The aviaries line this quieter valley, gently separated from the human world. The varied terrain extends the stage: flocks of white storks emerge from the narrow valley corridor, accompanied by sound and light effects that mark the dramatic climax.<\/p>\n

Bird-Oriented Design<\/p>\n

In a performance built around the idea of \u201ccoexistence in nature,\u201d birds fly freely through the open theater, weaving, circling, and eventually returning to their roosts. In this context, architects faced a set of questions: What kind of take-off paths do birds need? From where do they derive their field of vision and sense of safety? How do different species live, and what kinds of habitats do they each require? Which materials attract them, and which sounds, lights, or wind conditions do they avoid? Finally, can the theater itself become a landscape from a bird\u2019s point of view?<\/p>\n

Within the integrated design system, GOA\u2019s multidisciplinary team undertook the architecture, interior, and landscape design, and also took part in construction management, dissolving the traditional boundary between concept design and construction drawing. As professional divisions blurred, coordination became more fluid\u2014and designers were compelled to move beyond the confines of own specialties to become builders collectively.<\/p>\n

The gentle topography of the performance area conceals a network of drainage inlets: rainwater is guided into integrally cast gutters, which then tie into the valley\u2019s existing flood channels and landscape water system. The \u201cclay\u201d landforms also house concealed cavities that contain acoustic equipment, enabling the multimedia effects devised by the director\u2019s team for Dancing with the Birds.<\/p>\n

Architecture is no longer standardized \u201cstage,\u201d and the performance is no longer a one-off event merely occurring in space. Through this process, the Earth Valley Theater ultimately emerges as a \u201ctotal work of art.\u201d<\/p>\n
