TROP: terrains+open space<\/a><\/strong>: The Park is a newly completed residential project by TROP in Shenzhen.<\/span> Centered around the concept of \u201ca continuous journey,\u201d the design does not treat the landscape as a single flat plane, but rather creates a daily garden to be wandered and lingered in through subtle changes in topography and interconnected layers of space.<\/span> Paths rise and fall with gentle slopes, weaving a continuous rhythm of movement among trees, water, and light;<\/span> spaces open and contract, guiding the body to move while allowing the mind to wander.<\/span><\/p>\n

The choice of a \u201clayered journey\u201d as the design concept stems from the inherent constraints of the site.<\/span> The project sits beneath towering buildings, with a high residential density and very limited space for activity or pause.<\/span> The vertical enclosure creates pronounced shading effects: sightlines are blocked by building volumes, human perception is compressed, and public spaces struggle to form a sense of openness;<\/span> sunlight and ventilation are weakened in certain areas, making spaces feel heavy or dim. Compounding this condition is the constant flow of residents moving in and out.<\/span> As a result, the ground level is often forced to prioritize circulation, further reducing the already scarce opportunities for lingering, gathering, and everyday activity.<\/span><\/p>\n

A Gently Unfolding Garden<\/p>\n

To address these challenges, we focused on \u201chow to unlock more usable living surfaces.\u201d This is not merely a formal gesture, but a strategy of spatial resource redistribution: by linking multiple levels and reorganizing nodes, activities and pauses are liberated from a single ground plane, enhancing accessibility, visibility, and usable duration, creating shared spaces that function reliably across different climates and times.<\/p>\n

To achieve this, we established a public space system using \u201clayered terraces + gentle slope connections + elevation transitions\u201d: the middle of the site is raised by approximately 2.1m, while local depressions of about 1.2m form intermediate layers and composite levels, creating perceivable three-dimensional spatial interfaces.<\/span> The upper and lower levels carry activities of different intensity and character\u2014the upper level ensures continuity of main circulation and public areas, while the lower level provides more enclosed, sheltered spaces for lingering and activity, accommodating a range of uses such as family, leisure, and small social gatherings.<\/span><\/p>\n

Through this elevation strategy, the previously constrained site is transformed into more usable \u201clayers of life\u201d: movement, pause, and transitions establish a clear spatial rhythm;<\/span> sightlines and circulation are reopened;<\/span> and public activities are no longer compressed onto a single plane, alleviating the sense of confinement in a high-density environment and creating comfortable, breathable daily public spaces.<\/span><\/p>\n

Walking Above | Everyday Experiences Along the Upper Path<\/p>\n

The upper level is organized around a winding, intentional path that structures the overall experience. The corridor flows continuously between garden clusters, with curves and variations in width turning everyday circulation into a perceptible journey; as people move, their sight alternates between sky, canopy, and water, creating a rhythmic \u201cchanging scenery with each step.\u201d<\/p>\n

At key turns and viewing points, nodes are enlarged to support lingering.<\/span> Pocket platforms along the corridor allow short pauses, viewing, and rest, with garden-style planting providing soft separation and guidance to prevent interference between circulation and pause.<\/span><\/p>\n

Continuous greenery forms the spatial foundation of the upper level.<\/span> Tree canopies provide shade and scale buffering, while shrubs and ground cover define boundaries and enhance a sense of security, softening transitions between hard corridors and surrounding interfaces, increasing comfort and usability.<\/span><\/p>\n

The lower level centers on a water-featured terrace as the core gathering space for public activities. Terraced steps and water-adjacent platforms naturally draw people to the water\u2019s edge: children can engage and play, while adults can sit along terrace edges for short pauses or conversation. Water introduces a stable microclimate and sensory experience, visually relaxing the space.<\/p>\n

Around the water, the underside of structures and archways are treated as sheltered small spaces. Window openings frame views of the garden and water, creating permeable interfaces for rest; shadows and covered areas maintain usability and comfort even during Shenzhen\u2019s long, hot summers and frequent rainy conditions.<\/p>\n

Functionally, the lower level also accommodates barbecues and a small theater, supporting daily family and neighborhood gatherings. Through \u201cwater aggregation + sheltered pause + multi-functional programming,\u201d the lower level transforms from a transitional space into a shared destination within the community.<\/p>\n
