LUO studio<\/a><\/strong>\uff1aFollowing the Sandstone Wood Pavilion designed for the \u201cHU SHI GUANG \u00b7 Art Eco Site\u201d program in Longyou, Zhejiang, we were once again invited by Fengyuzhu\u2014this time to engage in a regional-scale curatorial initiative\u2014the \u201cNankunshan-Luofushan Rim Pioneer Zone (Huizhou) Architectural Art Project.\u201d Drawing on Su Dongpo\u2019s \u201cSixteen Delights of Life\u201d as its curatorial framework, the initiative brings together architects and artists to create rural waystations and spatial installations along Huizhou\u2019s 218-kilometer-long scenic tourism highway. Each participating team selected one of Dongpo\u2019s sixteen delights as the theme, creating a spatial installation complemented by caf\u00e9 and tea offerings. During early site visits with Bangbang, the initiative\u2019s chief curator, a bamboo grove beside Shisanba Bridge in Mazha Town was chosen as our project site.<\/p>\n

\u6700\u521d\u4ece\u7167\u7247\u4e2d\u770b\u5230\u5341\u4e09\u575d\u6865\uff0c\u5e76\u672a\u4ea7\u751f\u5f3a\u70c8\u76f4\u89c2\u611f\u53d7\uff0c\u800c\u5f53\u4eb2\u4e34\u73b0\u573a\uff0c\u4ece\u4e1b\u7af9\u6797\u7a7f\u884c\u800c\u5165\uff0c\u5341\u4e09\u4e2a\u77f3\u575d\u58a9\u6cbf\u6cb3\u9053\u5c55\u5f00\u3001\u5e8f\u5217\u5206\u660e\u7684\u9635\u52bf\u7acb\u523b\u663e\u73b0\uff1a\u6bcf\u4e24\u6839\u575d\u58a9\u4e4b\u95f4\uff0c\u4ee5\u69ab\u536f\u5f0f\u7684\u9576\u5d4c\u5173\u7cfb\u5d4c\u5165\u4e09\u6839\u88ab\u5c81\u6708\u8e0f\u78e8\u5149\u6ed1\u7684\u9752\u77f3\u6761\u677f\u3002\u7ad9\u5728\u6865\u4fa7\uff0c\u5f00\u59cb\u4e0d\u65ad\u8ffd\u95ee\uff1a\u5f53\u5e74\u7684\u5de5\u5320\u4e3a\u4f55\u91c7\u7528\u8fd9\u6837\u7684\u6784\u9020\u903b\u8f91\uff1f\u8fd9\u4e9b\u5c3a\u5ea6\u4e0e\u5f62\u5f0f\u80cc\u540e\u5bf9\u5e94\u7684\u662f\u600e\u6837\u7684\u6750\u6599\u6761\u4ef6\u4e0e\u65bd\u5de5\u624b\u6bb5\uff1f\u53c8\u6709\u591a\u5c11\u884c\u4eba\u5728\u6b64\u5f80\u8fd4\uff0c\u624d\u5c06\u77f3\u677f\u78e8\u51fa\u5982\u6b64\u6e29\u6da6\u7684\u8868\u9762\uff1f<\/p>\n

\u8fd9\u4e9b\u7591\u95ee\u63d0\u9192\u6211\u4eec\uff1a\u5982\u6b64\u9760\u8fd1\u4e00\u79cd\u7279\u6709\u7684\u5728\u5730\u8def\u6865\u9057\u8ff9\uff0c\u5e94\u8be5\u8981\u505a\u4ec0\u4e48\u6837\u7684\u52a8\u4f5c\uff1f\u5e26\u7740\u8fd9\u4e9b\u601d\u8003\uff0c\u9700\u8981\u5728\u5176\u9644\u8fd1\u505a\u51fa\u4f55\u79cd\u6070\u5f53\u7684\u7a7a\u95f4\u56de\u5e94\uff0c\u624d\u80fd\u540c\u65f6\u56de\u5e94\u653f\u5e9c\u7684\u9700\u6c42\u3001\u4e1a\u4e3b\u7684\u9700\u6c42\uff1f\u5e76\u8ba9\u5efa\u7b51\u5e08\u5728\u4ef7\u503c\u4e0e\u65b9\u6cd5\u4e0a\u66f4\u89c9\u81ea\u6d3d\uff1f\u56e2\u961f\u9996\u5148\u505a\u7684\u7b2c\u4e00\u4e2a\u5de5\u4f5c\u5e76\u4e0d\u662f\u5f00\u5c55\u8bbe\u8ba1\uff0c\u800c\u662f\u8e0f\u8bbf\u5f53\u5730\u7684\u9020\u6865\u5386\u53f2\uff0c\u4ee5\u7530\u91ce\u8c03\u67e5\u7684\u65b9\u5f0f\u8ffd\u6eaf\u524d\u5de5\u4e1a\u65f6\u4ee3\u7684\u5730\u65b9\u77e5\u8bc6\u4e0e\u9020\u6865\u5320\u827a\u3002<\/p>\n

When we first saw Shisanba Bridge through photographs, it did not leave a particularly strong impression. Yet upon arriving on site and walking through the bamboo grove, the bridge revealed itself with striking clarity: thirteen stone piers unfold along the river in a precise and rhythmic sequence. Between each pair of piers, three gray stone slabs\u2014worn smooth by decades of footsteps\u2014are inserted through a mortise-and-tenon-like interlocking system. Standing by the bridge, we couldn\u2019t help but wonder: why did the craftsmen adopt this structural logic? What materials and construction methods shaped these dimensions and forms? How many people must have crossed here, back and forth, to wear the stone into such a gently polished, tactile surface?<\/p>\n

These questions led us to consider what kind of architectural response could be made in close proximity to such a distinctive piece of local bridge heritage. What intervention here would be appropriate\u2014one that could meet the expectations of the government and the client, while allowing us, as architects, to remain true to our architectural values and methodology? Rather than beginning with design, our first step was to explore the local history of bridge building, tracing pre-industrial local knowledge and craftsmanship through field research.<\/p>\n

\u7530\u91ce\u8003\u8bc1 Field Research<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u901a\u8fc7\u67e5\u627e\u5730\u65b9\u5fd7\u4e0e\u5b9e\u5730\u8e0f\u8bbf\uff0c\u4e86\u89e3\u5230\u60e0\u5dde\u5730\u533a\u5b58\u5728\u4e24\u7c7b\u4e3b\u8981\u7684\u6c11\u95f4\u9020\u6865\u5de5\u827a\u3002<\/p>\n

Through archival research and on-site fieldwork, we identified two primary vernacular bridge types in Huizhou.<\/p>\n

\u5176\u4e00\u4e3a\u575d\u6865\uff0c\u5373\u5341\u4e09\u575d\u6865\u8fd9\u4e00\u7c7b\u578b\uff1a\u5176\u575d\u58a9\u5ea7\u8fce\u5411\u4e0a\u6e38\u5448\u68ad\u5c16\u5f62\uff0c\u9996\u90e8\u5fae\u5fae\u7fd8\u8d77\uff0c\u5f62\u4f3c\u6c34\u9762\u633a\u51fa\u7684\u9e45\u80f8\uff0c\u56e0\u6b64\u5f53\u5730\u4ea6\u79f0\u201c\u9e45\u80f8\u201d\u6865\u3002\u6b64\u7c7b\u6865\u591a\u51fa\u73b0\u4e8e\u6cb3\u9053\u4e0e\u5824\u5cb8\u9ad8\u5dee\u4e0d\u5927\u7684\u5730\u6bb5\uff0c\u6865\u8eab\u76f8\u5bf9\u4f4e\u77ee\uff0c\u4e5f\u5e38\u88ab\u7406\u89e3\u4e3a\u201c\u77ee\u6865\u201d\u3002\u5728\u67e5\u627e\u8d44\u6599\u8fc7\u7a0b\u4e2d\uff0c\u53d1\u73b0\u82cf\u4e1c\u5761\u4e3b\u653f\u60e0\u5dde\u65f6\u4e3a\u4e86\u4fbf\u5229\u5927\u5bb6\u800c\u7b79\u8d44\u3001\u4e3b\u6301\u4fee\u5efa\u4e86\u4e00\u5ea7\u201c\u6d6e\u6865\u201d\uff0c\u6570\u5341\u8258\u8239\u5448\u4e00\u5b57\u9635\u5217\u6d6e\u653e\u4e8e\u6c34\u9762\uff0c\u5728\u5f7c\u6b64\u76f8\u90bb\u7684\u8239\u4e0a\u67b6\u8bbe\u6865\u9762\uff0c\u636e\u79f0\u4e5f\u662f\u201c\u575d\u6865-\u9e45\u80f8\u201d\u7684\u5f62\u6001\u539f\u578b\uff0c\u6b64\u6b21\u98ce\u8bed\u7b51\u7b56\u5212\u4e86\u4e00\u6761\u7ebf\u7d22\u201c\u4e1c\u5761\u4e50\u4e8b\u201d\uff0c\u987b\u5728\u4e00\u5b9a\u65b9\u5f0f\u4e0a\u4e0e\u82cf\u4e1c\u5761\u5f62\u6210\u5173\u8054\uff0c\u4ece\u8fd9\u4e2a\u89d2\u5ea6\u601d\u8003\uff0c\u5728\u8bbe\u8ba1\u4e2d\u5145\u5206\u8003\u8651\u201c\u575d\u6865\u201d\u4e4b\u7a7a\u95f4\u5f62\u6001\uff0c\u4e5f\u5c31\u4e0e\u82cf\u4e1c\u5761\u4ea7\u751f\u4e86\u5f3a\u5173\u8054\u3002<\/p>\n

The first type is the baqiao, represented by Shisanba Bridge. These bridges feature upstream-facing piers shaped like tapered spindles, with slightly raised tips evoking a goose\u2019s chest\u2014hence the local name, \u201cgoose-chest bridges.\u201d They are typically found where the height difference between river and embankment is small, resulting in relatively low bridge decks, which are sometimes referred to as \u201clow bridges.\u201d Historic records revealed that when Su Dongpo governed Huizhou, he raised funds and oversaw the construction of a \u201cfloating bridge\u201d to facilitate local travel. Dozens of boats were lined up across the river, with planks laid between adjacent boats to form a continuous bridge deck. This is said to be an early morphological prototype of the \u201cgoose-chest bridge.\u201d Since the project\u2019s curatorial narrative is thematically linked to \u201cDongpo\u2019s Delights,\u201d drawing on the spatial logic of the \u201cgoose-chest bridge\u201d became a meaningful way to connect the project with this historical reference.<\/p>\n

\u5176\u4e8c\u4e3a\u9ad8\u6865\uff0c\u5f53\u5730\u53c8\u79f0\u201c\u677f\u51f3\u6865\u201d\u3002\u5176\u5e38\u89c1\u7684\u573a\u5730\u6761\u4ef6\u4e3a\uff1a\u4e24\u7aef\u5824\u5cb8\u663e\u8457\u9ad8\u4e8e\u6cb3\u9053\uff0c\u4e14\u6cb3\u9053\u76f8\u5bf9\u8f83\u7a84\u3002\u4e3a\u8de8\u8d8a\u9ad8\u5dee\u517c\u5f62\u6210\u7a33\u5b9a\u53d7\u529b\uff0c\u5f53\u5730\u5de5\u5320\u96d5\u51ff\u51fa\u7279\u522b\u957f\u3001\u7ec6\u7684\u77f3\u67f1\uff08\u622a\u9762\u8fb9\u957f\u5c3a\u5bf8\u7ea6\u4e3a18\u516c\u5206\uff09\uff0c\u5e76\u4f7f\u5176\u5982\u540c\u201c\u677f\u51f3\u201d\u7ed3\u6784\u822c\u201c\u5411\u4e0b\u4e14\u5411\u5916\u6491\u5f00\u201d\uff0c\u4ee5\u83b7\u5f97\u66f4\u597d\u7684\u652f\u6491\u4e0e\u6297\u503e\u8986\u80fd\u529b\uff0c\u7531\u6b64\u5f97\u540d\u3002<\/p>\n

The second type is the gaoqiao, locally known as the \u201cbench-leg bridge.\u201d This form typically appears where the embankments rise markedly above the water level and the river channel is relatively narrow. To bridge the height difference and ensure structural stability, local craftsmen carved exceptionally long and slender stone posts\u2014each with a cross-section of roughly 18 centimeters\u2014and arranged them to splay outward and downward like the legs of a bench, providing greater support and improved resistance to overturning. The name \u201cbench-leg bridge\u201d derives directly from this distinctive structural posture.<\/p>\n
