Espace citoyen des Confluents is rooted in an integrated vision, where\u00a0architecture and landscape were conceived together from the outset.\u00a0In collaboration with the firm Cardin Julien, the team reimagined the\u00a0site through a transdisciplinary lens\u2014as a place for gathering, social\u00a0connection, and engagement with nature.<\/p>\n

Here, landscape architecture serves as an ecological, social, and climatic\u00a0driver. It structures uses, captures stormwater, mitigates heat islands,\u00a0and reconnects living systems. Designed to welcome life, the site supports\u00a0wildlife habitats that gradually reoccupy the restored areas.<\/p>\n

The landscape is not decorative: it is the backbone of\u00a0the project. The living fabric becomes an essential,\u00a0resilient, and profoundly human infrastructure.<\/p>\n

Espace citoyen des Confluents transforms a former industrial brownfield\u00a0into a vibrant civic hub, where nature shapes community life over the\u00a0long term. Today, a library, cultural spaces, and municipal services form\u00a0a public complex crisscrossed with pathways, rest areas, and an active\u00a0mobility network connecting neighbouring districts.<\/p>\n

Inspired by the transformation process specific to the former\u00a0petrochemical plant, the design engages the site in a reverse dynamic,\u00a0recreating conditions that support environmental recovery. Situated at\u00a0the intersection of Laval\u2019s Saint-Fran\u00e7ois and Duvernay-Est districts, the\u00a0project addresses two defining challenges: remedying a long-standing\u00a0lack of local amenities while restoring the ecological capacity of a\u00a0vulnerable territory.<\/p>\n

\u6c34\u662f\u8be5\u8bbe\u8ba1\u7684\u6838\u5fc3\u3002\u4e00\u4e2a\u76f8\u4e92\u8fde\u901a\u7684\u84c4\u6c34\u6c60\u7f51\u7edc\u7ba1\u7406\u7740\u573a\u5730\u5185 100%\u7684\u96e8\u6c34\uff0c\u5e76\u89c4\u5212\u4e86\u7a7a\u95f4\u5185\u7684\u6d3b\u52a8\u6d41\u7ebf\u3002\u8fd9\u4e00\u53ef\u89c1\u4e14\u878d\u5165\u6b65\u9053\u7684\u8868\u9762\u6c34\u7cfb\u6709\u52a9\u4e8e\u9010\u6b65\u5efa\u7acb\u4e30\u5bcc\u4e14\u5177\u6709\u5f39\u6027\u7684\u751f\u7269\u591a\u6837\u6027\u3002\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

300 \u591a\u68f5\u6811\u3001\u91ce\u751f\u52a8\u7269\u8d70\u5eca\u4ee5\u53ca\u7279\u610f\u4fdd\u7559\u7684\u81ea\u7136\u690d\u88ab\u5171\u540c\u6784\u6210\u4e00\u4e2a\u4e0d\u65ad\u6f14\u8fdb\u7684\u751f\u6001\u7cfb\u7edf\uff0c\u4e3a\u5c45\u6c11\u63d0\u4f9b\u4e86\u5728\u6210\u719f\u7684\u57ce\u5e02\u73af\u5883\u4e2d\u4f53\u9a8c\u5bc6\u96c6\u7eff\u8272\u7a7a\u95f4\u7684\u96be\u5f97\u673a\u4f1a\u3002\u5728\u8fd9\u91cc\uff0c\u81ea\u7136\u6210\u4e3a\u4e00\u79cd\u9c9c\u6d3b\u7684\u6846\u67b6\uff0c\u5851\u9020\u7740\u7528\u9014\u3001\u793e\u4f1a\u5173\u7cfb\u4ee5\u53ca\u5f52\u5c5e\u611f\u3002\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u8fd9\u91cc\u66fe\u662f\u68ee\u6797\uff0c\u540e\u6765\u88ab\u5f00\u57a6\u4e3a\u519c\u7530\uff0c\u5728 20 \u4e16\u7eaa 70 \u5e74\u4ee3\u548c 80 \u5e74\u4ee3\u53c8\u5efa\u6210\u4e86\u5df4\u65af\u592b\u7684\u5316\u5de5\u5382\uff0c\u7ed9\u8fd9\u7247\u571f\u5730\u548c\u5468\u8fb9\u5730\u533a\u7684\u9762\u8c8c\u7559\u4e0b\u4e86\u6df1\u523b\u7684\u5370\u8bb0\u3002\u5728\u62c9\u74e6\u5c14\u5e02\u5b8c\u6210\u53bb\u6c61\u5de5\u4f5c\u540e\uff0c\u8be5\u573a\u5730\u4ecd\u662f\u4e00\u7247\u7834\u8d25\u7684\u68d5\u5730\uff0c\u89c1\u8bc1\u4e86\u6df1\u523b\u7684\u5de5\u4e1a\u53d8\u8fc1\u3002\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u8bbe\u8ba1\u7b56\u7565\u5e76\u975e\u62b9\u53bb\u8fd9\u6bb5\u5386\u53f2\uff0c\u800c\u662f\u9009\u62e9\u624e\u6839\u4e8e\u5176\u4e2d\u3002\u80a5\u6c83\u7684\u9ecf\u571f\u571f\u58e4\u3001\u9760\u8fd1\u6e7f\u5730\u4ee5\u53ca\u573a\u5730\u7684\u5929\u7136\u84c4\u6c34\u80fd\u529b\uff0c\u4e3a\u57fa\u4e8e\u518d\u751f\u7684\u65b9\u6cd5\u63d0\u4f9b\u4e86\u4f9d\u636e\u3002\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u8be5\u9879\u76ee\u5851\u9020\u4e86\u4e00\u5904\u6709\u4eba\u5c45\u4f4f\u7684\u666f\u89c2\uff0c\u5728\u8fd9\u91cc\uff0c\u751f\u6001\u52a8\u6001\u65e2\u652f\u6301\u4e86\u751f\u7269\u591a\u6837\u6027\uff0c\u4e5f\u4fc3\u8fdb\u4e86\u793e\u533a\u751f\u6d3b\u3002\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u5728\u73b0\u573a\uff0c\u6c34\u6587\u65e2\u662f\u4e00\u79cd\u52a8\u6001\u7279\u5f81\uff0c\u4e5f\u662f\u4e00\u79cd\u5f15\u4eba\u6df1\u601d\u7684\u5143\u7d20\u3002\u7531\u900f\u6c34\u6b65\u9053\u3001\u6392\u6c34\u6c9f\u548c\u76f8\u4e92\u8fde\u901a\u7684\u84c4\u6c34\u6c60\u6784\u6210\u7684\u7f51\u7edc\uff0c\u80fd\u591f\u6536\u96c6\u96e8\u6c34\u548c\u5f84\u6d41\u6c34\uff0c\u5e76\u5c06\u5176\u7f13\u7f13\u5f15\u5165\u666f\u89c2\u4e4b\u4e2d\u3002\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u8fd9\u4e9b\u76c6\u5730\u8d77\u5230\u4e86\u771f\u6b63\u7684\u6e7f\u5730\u4f5c\u7528\uff0c\u4e3a\u91ce\u751f\u52a8\u690d\u7269\u63d0\u4f9b\u4e86\u6816\u606f\u5730\uff0c\u4fc3\u8fdb\u4e86\u751f\u7269\u591a\u6837\u6027\u3002\u53ea\u6709\u5728\u66b4\u96e8\u671f\u95f4\uff0c\u6ea2\u51fa\u7684\u6c34\u624d\u4f1a\u88ab\u5f15\u5411\u5e02\u653f\u96e8\u6c34\u7cfb\u7edf\uff0c\u4ece\u800c\u9632\u6b62\u6d2a\u6c34\u6cdb\u6ee5\u3002\u7531\u573a\u5730\u5f00\u6316\u6750\u6599\u5851\u9020\u7684\u5730\u8c8c\u6709\u52a9\u4e8e\u8fd9\u4e00\u6c34\u6587\u7b56\u7565\u7684\u5b9e\u65bd\u3002\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Water forms the backbone of the design. A network of interconnected\u00a0retention basins manages 100% of on-site stormwater and structures\u00a0the flow of activity in the space. Visible and integrated into the pathway,\u00a0this surface hydrology fosters the gradual establishment of a rich and\u00a0resilient biodiversity.<\/p>\n

More than 300 trees, wildlife corridors, and intentionally preserved\u00a0spontaneous vegetation form an evolving ecosystem, offering residents\u00a0the rare experience of a dense green space within an established urban\u00a0setting. Here, nature becomes a living framework that shapes uses, social\u00a0relations, and a sense of belonging.<\/p>\n

Once forested, and later converted to agricultural land, the site hosted\u00a0a BASF petrochemical plant during the 1970s and 1980s, leaving\u00a0a lasting mark on the land and the identity of the area. Following\u00a0decontamination by the City of Laval, the site remained a degraded\u00a0brownfield, a testament to profound industrial transformation.<\/p>\n

Rather than erasing this history, the design strategy chose to root\u00a0itself in it. Fertile clay soils, proximity to wetlands, and the site\u2019s\u00a0natural capacity for water retention informed a regeneration-based\u00a0approach.<\/p>\n

The project gives form to an inhabited landscape,\u00a0where ecological dynamics support both biodiversity\u00a0and community life.<\/p>\n

On site, hydrology becomes both a dynamic feature and a contemplative\u00a0element. A network of permeable pathways, drainage trenches, and\u00a0interconnected basins captures rain and runoff water, slowly directing it\u00a0through the landscape.<\/p>\n

These basins function as true wetlands, fostering wildlife habitats and\u00a0promoting biodiversity. An overflow directs excess water to the municipal\u00a0stormwater system only during heavy rainfall, preventing flooding.The landforms shaped from the site\u2019s excavated material contribute to\u00a0this hydrological strategy.<\/p>\n

\u79cd\u690d\u4e86 25 \u4e2a\u54c1\u79cd\u7684 300 \u591a\u68f5\u6811\uff0c\u540c\u65f6\uff0c\u68d5\u5730\u690d\u88ab\u548c\u751f\u7269\u5eca\u9053\u4e3a\u4e00\u4e2a\u6709\u5f39\u6027\u7684\u751f\u6001\u7cfb\u7edf\u5f62\u6210\u521b\u9020\u4e86\u6761\u4ef6\u3002\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u751a\u81f3\u505c\u8f66\u573a\u4e5f\u662f\u8fd9\u79cd\u7406\u5ff5\u7684\u4e00\u90e8\u5206\u3002\u5176\u4e09\u89d2\u5f62\u7684\u5f62\u72b6\u51cf\u5c11\u4e86\u77ff\u7269\u8db3\u8ff9\uff0c\u5e76\u9650\u5236\u4e86\u4e0d\u900f\u6c34\u7684\u8868\u9762\u3002\u6c89\u6dc0\u4e95\u5728\u96e8\u6c34\u8fdb\u5165\u76c6\u5730\u7f51\u7edc\u4e4b\u524d\u6355\u83b7\u4e86\u9053\u8def\u5f84\u6d41\u4e2d\u7684\u9897\u7c92\u7269\u3002\u968f\u7740\u65f6\u95f4\u7684\u63a8\u79fb\uff0c\u6811\u51a0\u4f1a\u9010\u6e10\u8986\u76d6\u8fd9\u7247\u7a7a\u95f4\uff0c\u7f13\u89e3\u70ed\u5c9b\u6548\u5e94\uff0c\u5e76\u786e\u4fdd\u5411\u5468\u8fb9\u81ea\u7136\u7a7a\u95f4\u7684\u6e10\u8fdb\u8fc7\u6e21\u3002\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u8be5\u9879\u76ee\u63d0\u4f9b\u4e86\u5728\u6210\u719f\u7684\u90fd\u5e02\u73af\u5883\u4e2d\u4f53\u9a8c\u68ee\u6797\u822c\u666f\u89c2\u7684\u96be\u5f97\u673a\u4f1a\u3002\u4e00\u5ea7\u4eba\u884c\u6865\u548c\u4e24\u4e2a\u89c2\u666f\u53f0\u8ba9\u4eba\u4eec\u80fd\u591f\u8fdb\u5165\u6c34\u6c60\u533a\u57df\uff0c\u5e76\u6b23\u8d4f\u5230\u73b0\u573a\u4fdd\u7559\u7684\u53c2\u5929\u5927\u6811\uff0c\u800c\u9e1f\u820d\u5219\u4e3a\u91ce\u751f\u52a8\u7269\u7684\u6d3b\u52a8\u63d0\u4f9b\u4e86\u652f\u6301\u3002\u6c34\u58f0\u548c\u98ce\u58f0\u9010\u6e10\u53d6\u4ee3\u4e86\u8f66\u8f86\u7684\u55a7\u56a3\u3002\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u8fd9\u7247\u7a7a\u95f4\u65e8\u5728\u4e0d\u65ad\u6f14\u53d8\uff0c\u53d8\u5f97\u91ce\u8da3\u6a2a\u751f\u3002\u5b83\u7684\u7f8e\u5e76\u975e\u4e00\u76ee\u4e86\u7136\uff0c\u4e5f\u5e76\u975e\u6c38\u6052\u4e0d\u53d8\u3002\u6bcf\u4e2a\u5b63\u8282\u90fd\u4f1a\u6539\u53d8\u4eba\u4eec\u7684\u611f\u53d7\u3002\u8d28\u5730\u3001\u690d\u88ab\u5c42\u6b21\u548c\u5fae\u751f\u5883\u5171\u540c\u8425\u9020\u51fa\u4e00\u79cd\u611f\u5b98\u4f53\u9a8c\uff0c\u8ba9\u4eba\u5e73\u9759\u4e0b\u6765\uff0c\u653e\u6162\u811a\u6b65\uff0c\u5728\u57ce\u5e02\u5bc6\u96c6\u548c\u8fc7\u5ea6\u523a\u6fc0\u7684\u73af\u5883\u4e2d\u83b7\u5f97\u7247\u523b\u7684\u5598\u606f\u3002\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

More than 300 trees across 25 species were planted, while brownfield\u00a0vegetation and biological corridors set the conditions for a resilient\u00a0ecosystem to emerge.<\/p>\n

Even the parking lot is part of this approach. Its triangular shape reduces\u00a0the mineral footprint and limits impervious surfaces. Sedimentation\u00a0wells capture particles from the road runoff before the water enters the\u00a0basin network. Over time, the tree canopy will grow to cover the space,\u00a0mitigating heat islands and ensuring a progressive transition to the\u00a0surrounding natural spaces.<\/p>\n

The project offers the rare experience of a forest-like landscape within an\u00a0established urban context. A footbridge and two observation platforms\u00a0provide access to the basins and the mature trees preserved on site,\u00a0while birdhouses support wildlife activity. The sounds of water and wind\u00a0gradually replace the hum of traffic.<\/p>\n

From the earliest phases, Projet Paysage and architecture firm Cardin\u00a0Julien worked closely to design a civic space where architecture and\u00a0landscape respond to one another through a truly transdisciplinary\u00a0approach. This collaboration stems not from mere formal adjustments,\u00a0but from a shared responsibility in shaping public spaces.<\/p>\n

The building serves as a focal point, while the landscape guides movement\u00a0and the rhythms of the site. Its bioclimatic orientation\u2014aligned along an\u00a0east-west axis to optimize passive solar gain\u2014interacts with the layout of\u00a0exterior pathways and the site\u2019s hydrological system. Openings, natural\u00a0light, and outdoor spaces are coordinated to ensure a seamless continuity\u00a0between interior and landscape.<\/p>\n

Certified LEED v4 Gold, the project demonstrates how integrated design\u00a0can give form to civic hubs that unite environmental performance, spatial\u00a0quality, and a strong sense of place.<\/p>\n

Beyond public amenities, Espace citoyen des Confluents acts as an urban\u00a0catalyst. Part of the City of Laval\u2019s 2035 Strategic vision, it contributes\u00a0to the redevelopment of a long-isolated area, strengthening connections\u00a0with surrounding neighbourhoods.<\/p>\n

The project offers a model for territories in\u00a0transformation: a landscape conceived as essential\u00a0infrastructure, capable of regenerating the soil,\u00a0supporting community life, and embedding urban\u00a0development over the long term.<\/p>\n
