Jianan landscape design office<\/strong><\/a>\uff1aWhen we started designing this garden, we had only one thing in mind: empty it out.<\/p>\n

When we took on the project, the courtyard was packed with raised planting beds \u2014 dense and cluttered, cutting the 300-square-meter space into fragments. The client’s needs were clear and straightforward: children need room to ride bikes, a basketball hoop, and a pond for fish. The kids love fish and check on them every day.<\/p>\n

These needs required no interpretation \u2014 only space. So the first step in the design was to strip away everything unnecessary, and return the site to itself.<\/p>\n

\u7b2c\u4e00\u4e2a\uff1a\u5165\u53e3\u4e0e\u5ba4\u5916\u9053\u8def\u4e4b\u95f4\u5b58\u5728\u8d85\u8fc7\u4e00\u7c73\u7684\u9ad8\u5dee\u3002\u53f0\u9636\u662f\u5fc5\u987b\u7684\uff0c\u4f46\u53ea\u662f\u53f0\u9636\uff0c\u592a\u666e\u901a\u3002<\/p>\n

\u7b2c\u4e8c\u4e2a\uff1a\u5927\u95e8\u6b63\u5bf9\u5ba2\u5385\u7684\u7a97\u6237\u3002\u9700\u8981\u906e\u6321\uff0c\u4f46\u53ea\u662f\u4e00\u5835\u5899\uff0c\u592a\u6b7b\u677f\u3002<\/p>\n

\u5230\u540e\u6765\uff0c\u6211\u4eec\u53d1\u73b0\u8fd9\u4e24\u4ef6\u4e8b\u6070\u6070\u662f\u8bbe\u8ba1\u6700\u597d\u7684\u5207\u5165\u70b9\u3002\u9ad8\u5dee\u53ef\u4ee5\u6210\u4e3a\u7a7a\u95f4\u7684\u8282\u594f\uff0c\u5899\u53ef\u4ee5\u6709\u66f4\u590d\u6742\u7684\u5b58\u5728\u65b9\u5f0f\u3002\u6211\u4eec\u505c\u6b62\u628a\u5b83\u4eec\u5f53\u4f5c\u95ee\u9898\u53bb\u89e3\u51b3\uff0c\u5f00\u59cb\u628a\u5b83\u4eec\u5f53\u4f5c\u6750\u6599\u53bb\u4f7f\u7528\u3002<\/p>\n

From Constraints to Material<\/p>\n

The site came with two given conditions \u2014 both of which we initially treated as problems.<\/p>\n

First: a drop of over one meter between the entrance and the street. Steps were inevitable. But just steps felt too ordinary.<\/p>\n

Second: the front gate faced directly toward the living room window. A screen was needed. But just a wall felt too blunt.<\/p>\n

Eventually we realized these two things were the best entry points the design had. The height difference could become spatial rhythm. The wall could have a more complex existence. We stopped treating them as problems to solve and started treating them as material to work with.<\/p>\n

\u8fd9\u4e0d\u662f\u4e00\u4e2a\u9690\u55bb\uff0c\u662f\u4e00\u4e2a\u7269\u7406\u4e8b\u5b9e\uff1a\u5899\u771f\u7684\u642d\u5728\u77f3\u5934\u4e0a\u3002\u77f3\u5934\u7684\u91cd\u91cf\u4e0e\u7c97\u7c9d\u7684\u808c\u7406\uff0c\u548c\u666f\u5899\u3001\u94fa\u88c5\u7684\u767d\u8272\u5e73\u6574\u5f62\u6210\u4e86\u76f4\u63a5\u7684\u5f20\u529b\u3002\u5b83\u89e3\u51b3\u4e86\u89c6\u7ebf\u95ee\u9898\uff0c\u4f46\u5b83\u66f4\u91cd\u8981\u7684\u4f5c\u7528\uff0c\u662f\u7ed9\u6574\u4e2a\u5165\u53e3\u7a7a\u95f4\u4e00\u4e2a\u91cd\u5fc3\u2014\u2014\u4e00\u4e2a\u8ba9\u773c\u775b\u53ef\u4ee5\u505c\u4e0b\u6765\u7684\u5730\u65b9\u3002<\/p>\n

\u5165\u53e3\u7684\u9876\u90e8\u662f\u6728\u683c\u6805\u9876\u76d6\uff0c\u5149\u4ece\u6805\u683c\u95f4\u843d\u4e0b\u6765\uff0c\u5728\u767d\u8272\u5730\u9762\u548c\u5899\u9762\u4e0a\u5f62\u6210\u79fb\u52a8\u7684\u9634\u5f71\u3002\u8fd9\u4e2a\u7ec6\u8282\u4e0d\u662f\u88c5\u9970\uff0c\u662f\u7a7a\u95f4\u65f6\u95f4\u611f\u7684\u4e00\u90e8\u5206\u2014\u2014\u540c\u4e00\u4e2a\u5165\u53e3\uff0c\u65e9\u4e0a\u548c\u4e0b\u5348\u3001\u6674\u5929\u548c\u9634\u5929\uff0c\u4f53\u9a8c\u5b8c\u5168\u4e0d\u540c\u3002<\/p>\n

\u53cc\u6247\u6728\u95e8\u662f\u5165\u53e3\u53d9\u4e8b\u7684\u6700\u540e\u4e00\u7ae0\u3002\u95e8\u5173\u7740\uff0c\u5916\u9762\u7684\u4eba\u4ec0\u4e48\u90fd\u770b\u4e0d\u89c1\u3002\u95e8\u5f00\u7740\uff0c\u4e5f\u53ea\u9732\u51fa\u4e00\u6761\u7f1d\u2014\u2014\u900f\u8fc7\u95e8\u7f1d\uff0c\u662f\u91cc\u9762\u7684\u7eff\u690d\u548c\u6f2b\u5c04\u7684\u5149\u3002\u63a8\u5f00\u95e8\u7684\u77ac\u95f4\uff0c\u7a7a\u95f4\u5c55\u5f00\u3002\u8fd9\u4e2a”\u5148\u85cf\u540e\u653e”\u7684\u8282\u594f\u662f\u523b\u610f\u8bbe\u8ba1\u7684\uff0c\u8ba9\u5f52\u5bb6\u8fd9\u4ef6\u65e5\u5e38\u7684\u4e8b\uff0c\u6bcf\u4e00\u6b21\u90fd\u8fd8\u7559\u6709\u4e00\u70b9\u610f\u5916\u3002<\/p>\n

Entrance: A Stone Carrying a Wall<\/p>\n

Steps of Sesame White granite rise one by one. The feature wall cantilevers out from the main structure, its far end resting \u2014 without any column \u2014 on a massive black natural boulder. The boulder was crane-lifted into position, weighing several tons.<\/p>\n

This is not a metaphor. It is a physical fact: the wall rests on the stone. The weight and coarse texture of the boulder creates direct tension with the white flatness of the wall and paving. It solves the privacy problem, but its more important role is to give the entire entrance a center of gravity \u2014 a place where the eye can stop.<\/p>\n

A timber louvre canopy covers the entrance above. Light falls between the slats and casts shifting shadows across the white surfaces below. This is not ornament \u2014 it is part of the temporal quality of the space. The same entrance reads completely differently in the morning versus the afternoon, on a sunny day versus overcast.<\/p>\n

The double wooden doors are the final chapter of the entrance sequence. When closed, nothing inside is visible. When open, only a sliver is revealed \u2014 a glimpse of greenery and diffused light through the gap. The moment of pushing the doors open and space unfolding is designed. This rhythm of concealment then release gives the daily act of coming home a small, persistent sense of surprise.<\/p>\n

\u4e09\u4e2a\u4f4d\u7f6e\uff0c\u4e09\u79cd\u4f7f\u7528\u65b9\u5f0f\uff0c\u4e00\u79cd\u6750\u6599\u903b\u8f91\u3002\u8fd9\u6761\u6697\u7ebf\u8ba9\u82b1\u56ed\u4e0d\u540c\u533a\u57df\u4e4b\u95f4\u6709\u4e86\u547c\u5e94\uff0c\u4e0d\u662f\u9760\u5f62\u5f0f\u7684\u91cd\u590d\uff0c\u800c\u662f\u9760\u4e00\u79cd\u6750\u6599\u6027\u683c\u7684\u5ef6\u7eed\u3002<\/p>\n

The Black Stone<\/p>\n

The black boulder does not appear only at the entrance.<\/p>\n

As the design developed, we found that the logic of this single stone could run through the entire garden: at the entrance, it is the landing point of the feature wall \u2014 the spatial anchor; among the planting beds in the rear, it sits within the greenery as a heavy counterpoint to the lightness of the plants; at the terrace corner, a stone of the same character is used as the outlet for the water feature \u2014 a thin stream running down its surface, introducing sound and movement.<\/p>\n

Three locations. Three uses. One material logic. This quiet thread connects the different areas of the garden \u2014 not through repeated form, but through the persistence of a material personality.<\/p>\n

\u6728\u6750\u7528\u5728\u95e8\u6247\u3001\u683c\u6805\u9876\u76d6\u548c\u79cd\u690d\u6c60\u7684\u5750\u51f3\u9762\u4e0a\uff0c\u5f15\u5165\u6e29\u5ea6\u611f\uff0c\u548c\u51b7\u7070\u7684\u77f3\u6750\u5f62\u6210\u5e73\u8861\u3002\u540e\u9662\u7684\u79cd\u690d\u7bb1\u4f7f\u7528\u8010\u5019\u94a2\uff0c\u521d\u671f\u4eae\u6a59\uff0c\u65f6\u95f4\u4e45\u4e86\u81ea\u7136\u53d8\u6210\u6df1\u68d5\u9508\u8272\uff0c\u662f\u82b1\u56ed\u91cc\u552f\u4e00\u968f\u65f6\u95f4\u53d8\u5316\u660e\u663e\u7684\u6750\u6599\uff0c\u4e5f\u662f\u7a7a\u95f4\u91cc\u6700\u6e29\u6696\u7684\u4e00\u4e2a\u97f3\u7b26\u3002<\/p>\n

Materials: A Language That Steps Back<\/p>\n

The material selection across this garden followed one principle: the more restrained the materials, the more the people using the space come forward.
\nThe main paving is Sesame White granite. White was chosen for a practical reason \u2014 Beijing light tends toward cold grey tones, and white paving reflects light maximally, making the whole courtyard feel bright and open. The planters and feature wall share the same base tone: a clean, neutral ground.<\/p>\n

Timber appears in the gate panels, the louvre canopy, and the bench faces on the planters \u2014 introducing warmth and balancing the cooler stone. In the rear garden, the planting box is weathering steel: vivid orange at first, deepening naturally to dark rust over time. It is the only material in the garden that changes obvious with time, and the warmest note in the composition.<\/p>\n

Three materials \u2014 white stone, timber, weathering steel \u2014 constitute the entire material vocabulary of this garden. Nothing more.<\/p>\n

\u9c7c\u6c60\u505a\u6210\u8584\u58c1\uff0c\u5c3d\u53ef\u80fd\u8ba9\u6c34\u9762\u63a5\u8fd1\u5730\u9762\u3002\u8bbe\u8ba1\u65f6\u8003\u8651\u7684\u662f\u5b69\u5b50\u8db4\u5728\u6c60\u8fb9\u7684\u59ff\u52bf\u2014\u2014\u6c34\u9762\u79bb\u5730\u8d8a\u8fd1\uff0c\u89c2\u5bdf\u9c7c\u7684\u4f53\u9a8c\u8d8a\u76f4\u63a5\u3001\u8d8a\u4eb2\u5bc6\u3002\u8fd9\u4e2a\u6c60\u7684\u9ad8\u5ea6\u4e0d\u662f\u51ed\u611f\u89c9\u5b9a\u7684\uff0c\u662f\u63a8\u6f14\u8fc7\u7684\u3002<\/p>\n

The Courtyard: Function as Landscape<\/p>\n

Once the raised beds were cleared, the courtyard returned to what it should be: a continuous expanse of ground.<\/p>\n

Sesame White granite slabs cover it entirely, with no zones marked out, no signage indicating where cycling ends and basketball begins. Children do not need to be told where to play \u2014 openness itself is a form of freedom. The basketball hoop stands there, but this ground belongs to no single use.<\/p>\n

The fish pond is thin-walled, bringing the water surface as close to the ground as possible. The design thought was about the posture of a child lying at the edge \u2014 the closer the water is to eye level, the more direct and intimate the experience of watching the fish. The pond height was not set by intuition. It was worked out.
\nThe south edge of the site originally bordered a municipal road, with the road surface sitting higher than the garden \u2014 creating both visual pressure and the risk of flooding. We designed a terraced planting bed along the south edge: it raises the internal horizon, eliminating the oppressive feeling of being overlooked, while the drainage gradient permanently resolves the flooding risk. The resulting sectional relationship also became the best possible stage for the planting.<\/p>\n

Planting: Deliberate Wildness<\/p>\n

The planting follows a single direction: the appearance of natural growth, rather than the appearance of a “garden.”<\/p>\n

The palette centres on perennial flowering plants and ornamental grasses \u2014 lavender, salvia, hydrangea, cornflower, silver artemisia, fountain grass. These plants require minimal maintenance, growing and fading with the seasons, sometimes sparse, sometimes full. This unpredictability is intentional. It makes the garden feel less like a maintained product and more like a place with a biological rhythm of its own.<\/p>\n

The terraced planters give the planting a layered display across different heights: tall grasses to the back, perennials in the middle, trailing plants spilling over the planter edges. Against the neutral backdrop of Sesame White granite, the colours and forms of the plants have maximum room to express themselves.<\/p>\n

The Back Garden: Another Character<\/p>\n

Beyond the white grammar of the entrance, the rear garden speaks a different language.<\/p>\n

A timber deck extends across the space. A Japanese maple grows through it. A few white outdoor chairs are placed without ceremony. A weathering steel planter box quietly rusts. Unlike the openness and brightness of the main courtyard, this area is more contained in scale, warmer in material, quieter in atmosphere.<\/p>\n

This is where parents sit and watch their children play. There is no hard division between the two zones \u2014 sight lines pass through, as does sound \u2014 but the character of the two sides is entirely different. One belongs to movement, the other to stillness. The garden uses material and scale to create the separation, not a wall.<\/p>\n

The height difference at the entrance determined the rhythm of the steps. The gate facing the window determined that the feature wall had to be there. The feature wall needed a landing point \u2014 that determined where the stone sits. The children in the courtyard need to cycle and play basketball \u2014 that determined the ground had to be one continuous surface. The height of the thin-walled fish pond was worked out from the sight line of a child lying at its edge.<\/p>\n

Every formal decision has a reason that came from the site and the people using it. Not one form exists for the sake of appearance \u2014 yet together, they produce a space with a distinct character.<\/p>\n

Function determines form. Form serves the site entirely. Space speaks for itself.<\/p>\n
