hcs<\/strong><\/a>: Background<\/p>\n

The project is located in Guiwan Park of Qianhai New District, Shenzhen, and comprises three of the service building clusters in the park. The overall urban design of Qianhai New District originates from the winning proposal of an international competition by Field Operations in 2010.
\nNamed Water City of Qianhai, the proposal frames five large-scale waterfront parks as the core spatial structure of the new district. As the first completed water corridor park in Qianhai, Guiwan Park is a critical component of the district\u2019s public space. The hcs design team participated in the full landscape planning process of Guiwan Park and delivered the design for three of its service buildings.<\/p>\n

The Terminal Practice of Landscape Urbanism<\/p>\n

Landscape Urbanism is a “discourse power”-centered theoretical system that inspires landscape architects. Yet due to its all-encompassing definition, it lacks distinct identifiable features in built space. It is more of a systematic integration of accumulated experience than a pure theoretical innovation.<\/p>\n

From winning the 2010 international urban design competition for Qianhai Water City to the completion of Guiwan River Park (recipient of the 2020 ASLA Honor Award), James Corner Field Operations (JCFO) realized a full-spectrum attempt to materialize Landscape Urbanism theory, from the urban design scale down to large-scale green park projects. Inheriting the core ideas of Landscape Urbanism, the hcs team aims to extend and further substantiate the value of this theoretical thinking at the micro scale of park nodes: the park pavilions.<\/p>\n

A Six-Year Practice: From “Geometric Resemblance” to “Harmony in Diversity”
\nThere are six service buildings in Guiwan Park, three of which are designed by hcs. For the team, a long-standing core topic is how to establish a cohesive thread that fosters an interdependent symbiotic relationship between park buildings and the surrounding landscape.<\/p>\n

Unlike architects who intervene only in the later stages of park development, hcs participated in the preliminary planning of building site selection and functional positioning, defining the prerequisites and framework for the architectural design. From the very start, the buildings were not conceived as independent structures, but as integral components of the overall park masterplan.<\/p>\n

The whole process, from overall planning to the construction completion of the three selected buildings, spanned six years. The design approach evolved gradually: starting with pursuing formal geometric resemblance (Pavilion 4), then shifting away from expressive forms to act as a quiet functional backdrop (Pavilion 1), and finally embracing moderate formal diversity (Pavilion 3). This evolving design attitude reflects the very essence of context-based spatial practice: all design is the outcome of responsive dialogue shaped by specific circumstances and timing.<\/p>\n

2019 | Pavilion 4: The Geometric Wetland Viewing Gallery<\/p>\n

Pavilion 4 was the first service building completed in the park. Its architectural form is derived from the engineered, non-organic geometric logic of Guiwan Park. The park\u2019s water landscape consists of two types of purified wetlands: freshwater and seawater. Instead of the commonly seen natural curvilinear layout, the park\u2019s road network is dominated by regular, straight parallel lines, a design choice that emphasizes the unique character of integrating natural landscape with water conservancy infrastructure.<\/p>\n

Pavilion 4 features a folded metal roof, which echoes the park\u2019s distinctive aesthetic as a “green hydraulic engineering project”, and presents itself as a sculptural industrial facility.<\/p>\n

\u6842\u6e7e\u516c\u56ed\u662f\u57ce\u5e02\u91cc\u7684\u7ebf\u6027\u6cb3\u9053\u516c\u56ed\uff0c\u5efa\u7b51\u5929\u751f\u5177\u6709\u57ce\u5e02\u754c\u9762\u548c\u6cb3\u9053\u754c\u9762\u7684\u4e24\u9762\u6027\uff0c\u5efa\u7b51\u8bbe\u8ba1\u5f3a\u8c03\u573a\u5730\u4e0d\u540c\u65b9\u5411\u4e0a\u7684\u666f\u89c2\u5185\u5bb9\uff0c\u5177\u6709\u660e\u786e\u7684\u622a\u7136\u4e0d\u540c\u7684\u6027\u683c\uff0c\u5efa\u7b51\u6210\u4e3a\u4e00\u4e2a\u573a\u5730\u666f\u89c2\u671d\u5411\u53d8\u5316\u7684\u63d0\u793a\u8bcd\u3002<\/p>\n

\u4ece\u5916\u4fa7\u8857\u9053\u89c6\u89d2\uff0c\u5efa\u7b51\u50cf\u662f\u530d\u5310\u5728\u7eff\u8272\u91cc\u7684\u4e00\u4e2a\u5c01\u95ed\u91d1\u5c5e\u96d5\u5851\uff0c\u547c\u5e94\u8fdc\u5904\u7684\u524d\u6d77\u6469\u5929\u697c\u3002\u8d77\u4f0f\u7684\u91d1\u5c5e\u5c4b\u9762\uff0c\u9690\u85cf\u5728\u6797\u5730\u91cc\u7684\u6f6e\u6c50\u6cb3\u9053\u65c1\uff0c\u7b80\u6d01\u660e\u786e\u7684\u51e0\u4f55\u9020\u578b\uff0c\u5bf9\u6bd4\u67d4\u8f6f\u666f\u89c2\u73af\u5883\uff0c\u6210\u4e3a\u7a7a\u95f4\u6807\u5fd7\u7269\u3002<\/p>\n

From the street side on the outer edge, the building reads as a closed metal sculpture crouching low amid the greenery, echoing the distant skyscrapers of Qianhai.<\/span> Its undulating metal roof sits beside the tidal waterway hidden in the woodland.<\/span> The clean, defined geometric form stands in contrast to the soft surrounding landscape, acting as a spatial landmark.<\/span><\/p>\n

2024 | Pavilion 1: The Back Row of the Civic Stage<\/p>\n

Pavilion 1 sits adjacent to the open-air amphitheater of Guiwan Park, which is planned as a venue for enterprise exhibitions and community gatherings for surrounding areas. Positioned here, the building is designed to provide supporting amenities for the theater\u2019s future operations, housing restrooms and enclosed rehearsal\/exhibition spaces. By adding an overhung semi-outdoor space facing the stage, the design embeds the building into the amphitheater\u2019s landform, making it the final “back row” of the landscape theater.<\/p>\n

Pavilion 3 is located on the side of the dawn redwood wetland in Guiwan Park, where the redwood forest is the signature seasonal landscape of the park in autumn and winter. The original program of the building included restrooms, a fire control room and a smart equipment room \u2014 relatively passive park service functions. The design adds an arched promenade facing the redwood forest to enliven the building facade and provide resting space for visitors. It also becomes a contemplative arched corridor in the park, forging a tranquil yet powerful site-specific dialogue with the rows of dawn redwoods.<\/p>\n

Since 2019, hcs has successively participated in the design of service pavilions for numerous parks in Shenzhen. As a project with full-process involvement in both landscape and architectural design, the Guiwan Park pavilions are a concentrated reflection of the studio\u2019s understanding of public space design over recent years.<\/p>\n

For public space design, rather than pursuing instant viral popularity upon opening, it matters more to explore how to build a subtle connection with spontaneous user activities. Instead of rushing for quick results, it is better to let things unfold naturally. Programming and operation are core to public space, but they are not a magic wand that guarantees success. The core criterion of spatial design lies in how it accommodates and stimulates human use, making the activation of space a natural, taken-for-granted outcome.
