Zinialand Design<\/a><\/strong>: Finding Design Opportunities in Supply-Demand Mismatch<\/p>\n

Situated in the heart of the Guangdong\u2013Hong Kong\u2013Macao Greater Bay Area, the project is located in Beijiao New Town\u2014a pivotal node in the strategy for Guangzhou Foshan urban integration. With urban resources densely concentrated and rail transit networks intricately woven, the convergence of Foshan Metro Line 3 and Guangzhou Metro Line 7 provides swift connections to Guangzhou South Railway Station and the central districts of Foshan. On this dynamic land brimming with development momentum, the BUGU Island project is not merely a component of Shunde District\u2019s blueprint for a modern, livable city\u2014it also poses a profound inquiry into the very essence of public space.<\/p>\n

As an early waterfront greenspace in Beijiao New Town, the site once offered a rare ecological asset to the region, thanks to its linear riverfront layout and dense canopy of roadside trees. Yet as the city has expanded, so have the evolving needs of its inhabitants. The high density occupation of surrounding communities has laid bare the inadequacies of this green space: aging facilities, tangled pedestrian flows, and a palpable decline in vitality. Residents\u2019 diverse aspirations for outdoor socialising, parent child activities, and nature based learning now stand in sharp contrast to the outdated, monotonous offerings of the original park\u2014a stark supply demand disconnect.<\/p>\n

\u9879\u76ee\u7684\u6839\u672c\u547d\u9898\u7531\u6b64\u6e05\u6670\uff1a\u5982\u4f55\u5728\u5c0a\u91cd\u539f\u751f\u6c34\u5cb8\u751f\u6001\u4e0e\u6210\u719f\u6811\u6728\u7fa4\u843d\u7684\u524d\u63d0\u4e0b\uff0c\u91cd\u5851\u573a\u6240\u7684\u516c\u5171\u6d3b\u529b\u4e0e\u60c5\u611f\u9ecf\u6027\uff1f<\/p>\n

This supply demand mismatch ultimately devolved into spatial desolation. The greenspace became encroached upon by scattered small vegetable plots, footpaths were trampled into disorderly trails, and the area lacked any cohesive nodes that might encourage people to linger. Despite its sound ecological foundation, it had lost the warmth that a public space ought to possess.<\/p>\n

The fundamental question of the project thus becomes clear: How can we reshape the public vitality and emotional connectivity of the place while respecting the native waterfront ecology and the mature tree communities?<\/p>\n

2.\u9ad8\u67b6\u7684\u538b\u8feb\u4e0e\u7f1d\u5408\uff1a\u57ce\u9645\u9ad8\u67b6\u8f68\u9053\u4ea4\u901a\u6a2a\u8de8\u6c34\u7cfb\uff0c\u6210\u4e3a\u4e00\u9053\u5f3a\u70c8\u7684”\u89c6\u89c9\u5206\u5272\u7ebf”\u4e0e\u6f5c\u5728\u7684”\u566a\u97f3\u6e90”\u3002\u5982\u4f55\u8c03\u548c\u4f4f\u533a\u3001\u9ad8\u67b6\u3001\u6cb3\u9053\u4e09\u8005\u7684\u7acb\u4f53\u5173\u7cfb\uff0c\u662f\u9996\u8981\u7684\u7269\u7406\u6311\u6218\u3002<\/p>\n

3.\u690d\u88ab\u7684\u4e30\u8302\u4e0e\u6742\u4e71\uff1a\u573a\u5730\u690d\u88ab\u5448\u73b0\u5cad\u5357\u65fa\u76db\u7684\u751f\u547d\u529b\uff0c\u7af9\u6797\u3001\u91ce\u751f\u4e54\u6728\u3001\u6e7f\u5730\u6c34\u8349\u6784\u6210\u4f18\u79c0\u7684\u751f\u6001\u79cd\u8d28\u8d44\u6e90\u5e93\u3002\u4f46\u7f3a\u4e4f\u68b3\u7406\u7684\u8302\u76db\uff0c\u4e5f\u4f7f\u5176\u663e\u5f97\u6742\u4e71\uff0c\u65e0\u6cd5\u8f6c\u5316\u4e3a\u5b9c\u4eba\u7684\u7a7a\u95f4\u4f53\u9a8c\u3002<\/p>\n

4.\u754c\u9762\u7684\u65ad\u88c2\u4e0e\u51b7\u6f20\uff1a\u73b0\u4ee3\u9ad8\u5c42\u4f4f\u5b85\u4e0e\u7c97\u72b7\u91ce\u5730\u3001\u94c1\u8def\u9ad8\u67b6\u5f62\u6210\u5f3a\u70c8\u53cd\u5dee\u3002\u4f4f\u533a\u4e0e\u81ea\u7136\u4e4b\u95f4\u7f3a\u4e4f\u8fc7\u6e21\uff0c\u4e24\u79cd\u751f\u6d3b\u573a\u666f\u88ab\u751f\u786c\u5207\u5272\uff0c\u6574\u4f53\u754c\u9762\u8fa8\u8bc6\u5ea6\u7f3a\u5931\u3002<\/p>\n

Site Diagnosis: Four Clues and One Verdict
\nBefore becoming a park, the site was a forgotten corner of the city, displaying four typical “primordial folds”:<\/p>\n

1. The wildness and fragmentation of the water system \u2013 The river channel is tranquil, yet its banks remain untreated natural earthen and rocky slopes, overgrown with wild bamboo and shrubs. Beneath this untamed beauty lie hidden issues of soil erosion, safety hazards, and a lack of accessible waterfront paths\u2014while the site must also accommodate flood\u2011discharge functions.<\/p>\n

2. The pressure and stitching of the elevated structure \u2013 An intercity elevated rail transit line crosses over the water system, forming a stark “visual dividing line” and a potential “noise source.” Reconciling the three\u2011dimensional relationship among the residential neighbourhoods, the viaduct, and the river channel stands as the primary physical challenge.<\/p>\n

3.The abundance and disorder of vegetation \u2013 The site’s vegetation exhibits the vigorous vitality typical of the Lingnan region: bamboo groves, wild trees, and wetland aquatic plants constitute an excellent repository of ecological germplasm resources. However, this unchecked luxuriance, lacking proper organisation, also appears chaotic and cannot be transformed into a pleasant spatial experience.<\/p>\n

4.The fracture and indifference of the interface \u2013 Modern high\u2011rise residential buildings stand in stark contrast to the rough wilderness and the railway viaduct. There is a lack of transition between the residential areas and nature; the two life scenes are abruptly severed, and the overall interface suffers from a loss of distinctiveness.<\/p>\n

\u25bd\u6cb3\u9053\u4e0e\u9ad8\u67b6\u6865\u7684\u5173\u7cfb\uff1a\u81ea\u7136\u571f\u77f3\u5761\uff0c\u91ce\u751f\u7af9\u6797\u4e0e\u704c\u6728\u4e1b\u751f\uff0c\u6697\u85cf\u5404\u79cd\u5f0a\u75c5\u3002\u57ce\u9645\u9ad8\u67b6\u8f68\u9053\u4ea4\u901a\u6a2a\u8de8\u6c34\u7cfb\uff0c\u89c6\u7ebf\u5272\u88c2 \u00a9\u81f4\u6f9c\u666f\u89c2<\/p>\n

\u8fd9\u91cc\u4e0d\u9700\u8981\u4e00\u4ef6\u88ab\u89c2\u770b\u7684\u201c\u4f5c\u54c1\u201d\uff0c\u5b83\u9700\u8981\u4e00\u4e2a\u53ef\u4ee5\u62b5\u8fbe\u3001\u505c\u7559\u4e0e\u91cd\u9022\u7684\u201c\u573a\u6240\u201d\u3002<\/p>\n

We did not rush to offer answers. Instead, we observed the real behaviours of users at different times over an extended period. Temporal distribution, movement routes, spatial choices\u2026 daily slices layered upon one another, until the site\u2019s genuine needs came into clear focus.<\/p>\n

What is needed here is not a “work” to be looked at, but a “place” where people can arrive, stay, and return to meet again.<\/p>\n

\u8bbe\u8ba1\u7b56\u7565\uff1a\u5806\u6316\u4e4b\u95f4\uff0c\u634f\u51fa\u5927\u5730\u7684\u8868\u60c5<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u573a\u5730\u539f\u662f\u5e73\u7684\u3002\u6ca1\u6709\u8d77\u4f0f\uff0c\u6ca1\u6709\u8936\u76b1\uff0c\u89c6\u7ebf\u4e00\u89c8\u65e0\u4f59\u3002\u6ca1\u6709\u8868\u60c5\u7684\u571f\u5730\uff0c\u65e0\u6cd5\u951a\u5b9a\u4efb\u4f55\u7a7a\u95f4\u4f53\u9a8c\u3002<\/p>\n

\u8bbe\u8ba1\u505a\u7684\u7b2c\u4e00\u4ef6\u4e8b\uff0c\u662f\u5728\u539f\u6709\u571f\u77f3\u65b9\u5185\u90e8\u5b8c\u6210\u5730\u5f62\u91cd\u5851\u3002\u4e0d\u501f\u571f\uff0c\u4e0d\u5f03\u571f\uff0c\u53ea\u5728\u573a\u5730\u5185\u90e8\u8f6c\u5316\u3002\u6709\u7684\u5730\u65b9\u5806\uff0c\u6709\u7684\u5730\u65b9\u6316\uff0c\u5728\u5e73\u8861\u4e2d\u634f\u51fa\u9ad8\u5dee\u3002<\/p>\n

Design Strategy: Between Cut and Fill, Molding the Land’s Expression<\/p>\n

The site was flat to begin with\u2014no rises, no falls, no folds, and nothing to interrupt the sweeping view. A land without expression cannot anchor any spatial experience.<\/p>\n

The first move in the design was to reshape the terrain using only the existing earth and stone on site. No soil was brought in, and none was taken away; all transformation happened within the site itself. In some places we built up, in others we excavated, carving out elevation differences through a balanced cut and fill operation.<\/p>\n

The originally flat two dimensional plane was folded into ridges and valleys, with views either blocked or channelled, and paths either elevated or sunken. This is a corporeal spatial narrative. At the raised points, the line of sight is lifted above the treetops, re anchoring one\u2019s sense of direction; at the sunken points, the view is contained, and the surrounding slopes draw attention inward. With every shift in walking, there is a dual transition in both perspective and state of mind.<\/p>\n

Topography not only shapes experience but also silently orchestrates the flow of movement.<\/p>\n

Terrain partitions space not only in terms of sightlines and movement\u2014it also addresses two invisible forces: sound and visual perception.<\/p>\n

An elevated railway passes along the edge of the site, bringing low frequency noise and visual intrusion. Our choice was not to block, but to reinterpret. On the side adjacent to the railway, the raised slopes themselves absorb and reflect low frequency noise, while the densely planted evergreen trees and shrubs on the slopes form a living acoustic buffer zone. As trains pass, the sound is progressively attenuated; by the time it reaches the park interior, it is no longer harsh\u2014merely a distant event. Meanwhile, the visual impact is softened by foliage, filtering the coarse presence of bridge piers and concrete.<\/p>\n

Though the micro topographic undulations are subtle, they are sufficient to effectively deflect and filter the paths of sound propagation.<\/p>\n
