Classical European gardens pursue grandeur and order, while Eastern gardens excel at revealing the vast within the small, embodying the principle that \u201cthough created by human hands, they seem as if nature itself had fashioned them.\u201d A small garden can embrace the beauty of the four seasons;<\/span> a patch of hill and a few stones can encapsulate the vastness of mountains and rivers stretching for ten thousand li. We might as well borrow the garden-design magic of our ancestors for use in contemporary residential landscapes. Floating walkways, suspended eaves, winding paths leading to secluded spots, and water features that unfold in three cascading tiers\u2026<\/span> In the blink of an eye, the universe reveals itself\u2014and this time, that universe is imbued with a touch of the future.<\/span><\/p>\n

Located alongside Tianfu 5th Street, a major urban thoroughfare in Chengdu\u2019s Dayuan district, the G29 Yuan Island residential complex stands quietly on this site. The site consists of a 16-mu northern plot and a 13-mu southern plot, totaling 29 mu. The two plots are divided by a municipal road, leaving the north and south isolated from one another; the building line runs right up to the roadside, limiting the depth available for landscaping; The southern section is narrow and cramped, with available space severely constrained; while the northern section appears slightly more spacious, the majority of its floor area is occupied by mandatory fire lanes, evacuation stairwells, and various mechanical and electrical equipment enclosures, leaving only a few scattered patches of land for landscaping. It resembles a patchwork of fragmented corners carved out by urban infrastructure, presenting the designers with a formidable challenge.<\/p>\n

When there is limited room for creativity in the horizontal plane, the vertical plane may offer new opportunities for innovation. GAD, the lead architectural design firm, drew inspiration from a series of vertically rising \u201cfloating island\u201d oases, incorporating soft, flowing curves extensively into the exterior facades and moving away from rigid, straight walls. The landscape design extends the architectural concept, using \u201cfloating islands\u201d to soften the rigid, heavy boundaries of the site and alleviate the oppressive feeling of the urban interface; at the same time, it creates an \u201cark garden\u201d\u2014a hidden oasis in the heart of the city\u2014within the scattered, narrow gaps of the site.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnti-Gravity\u201d and \u201cAnti-Perspective\u201d\u2014A Grand Vision in a Small Garden<\/p>\n

Towering buildings and vast areas of shadow inevitably make residents feel oppressed. Therefore, the landscape design employs various techniques to create a series of \u201cfloating islands.\u201d Their irregular forms and continuous textures\u2014extending from vertical facades to horizontal planes\u2014break through existing boundaries and conventional visual relationships of gravity and perspective. By shedding the heavy, grounded sensation, all landscape elements appear to \u201cfloat,\u201d This approach minimizes the sense of oppression and confinement created by walls and structures. Furthermore, through the layered combination of plantings, water features, and architectural elements, the design creates rich visual perspectives and an intimate sense of scale, allowing visitors to fully appreciate the joy of \u201ca mustard seed containing Mount Sumeru; the universe within a single square inch.\u201d<\/p>\n

The designers deliberately expanded the area of the central water features in both the north and south plots; the water features account for approximately 5.9% of the north plot and 11% of the south plot, with a total water feature area of nearly 2,000 square meters. The reflections on the water act like a giant lens; the shimmering ripples blur the boundaries between vertical and horizontal planes, softening the harsh contours of the buildings and perimeter walls. Moreover, they significantly extend the depth of the originally cramped courtyards, and the gentle lapping of the water carries the essence of nature into every corner of the site. More importantly, an invisible bond lies hidden beneath the water: the courtyard on the lower ground floor connects the north and south plots through the water feature, reuniting the fragmented spaces into a single whole beneath the ground.<\/p>\n

The northern section features a wide, unbroken expanse of water, while the southern section unfolds along one side of the narrow, elongated terrain. In the center of the two water features, 18 floating flower beds of varying heights rise from the water, resembling flying disc-shaped islands soaring from the ground. The shortest of these \u201cflying discs\u201d stands 2.4 meters above the ground, while the tallest reaches 10.45 meters; some flower beds even rise above the perimeter wall, allowing passersby on the street to catch glimpses of clusters of suspended greenery. Constructed with a cantilevered braced structure and featuring a curved base, some even conceal cascading waterfalls within, their gentle murmur barely audible. Slender columns support the heavy flower platforms, from which plants cascade downward, instinctively drawing the viewer\u2019s gaze upward\u2014thus gradually dispelling the sense of weight in the space and transforming the entire courtyard into a light, airy environment. This is precisely the \u201cArk Illusion\u201d the designer sought to create: a vision that is both of the present and of the future.<\/p>\n

The designer transformed the large ventilation shafts and mechanical enclosures along the edge of the water feature\u2014which were originally an eyesore\u2014into streamlined sculptures by encasing them in parametric grilles. The curves of the grilles resemble layered ripples on water, turning these utilitarian elements into artistic installations within the water courtyard. The fire lane also abandons the conventional straight-line paving in favor of an irregular, interlocking border of alternating black and white, using subtle shifts in detail to break up the monotony of the large expanse of hard surface.<\/p>\n

In addition to creating an all-weather scenic corridor for residents, its light and airy design incorporates traditional garden techniques such as framed views, visual alignments, and winding paths leading to secluded spots, skillfully weaving together the beginning, development, transition, and conclusion of the landscape scenes. In open sections, the corridor fully opens up, bringing the mirror-like water feature and floating islands fully into view; in narrower sections, it narrows appropriately to block out cluttered or undesirable views and direct the gaze toward a clear focal point. The corridor and the scenery on either side echo one another: at times, the flow is as smooth as flowing clouds and water, allowing for a pleasant stroll; at other times, it resembles stationary clouds, inviting visitors to pause and admire the view. Light and greenery filter through the slats of the latticework, while light and shadow dance across the walking surface. Through this interplay of openness and intimacy, the design creates rich visual layers and a sense of movement within a limited space\u2014alternating between walking and pausing, blurring the line between reality and illusion; whether walking or standing still, one is always exploring the garden.<\/p>\n

In the design of Chengdu Yuan Island, we created a hidden paradise within a limited plot through landscape design, using the lightness of \u201cfloating\u201d to counteract gravity and the tranquility of \u201cconcealed\u201d habitats to soothe the clamor. While the architecture reaches toward the sky with a vertical posture, the landscape reweaves nature through an interplay of horizontal and vertical elements. We deconstructed traditional spatial elements to reveal the big picture through the small; we layered common landscape elements within the design, handling the weighty with ease; we used connecting walkways to link three-dimensional circulation paths and spaces both inside and out, creating a balance between the tangible and the intangible; and through rich plantings and an \u201cecological tank\u201d with exceptionally high information density, we opened up boundless imagination within a limited garden. In this contemporary residential community nestled in the heart of the city, we have realized a garden ideal where \u201ca small landscape conceals vast hills and valleys, and the universe is revealed in every glance.\u201d<\/p>\n
