LANDPROCESS\u00a0\uff1a<\/strong><\/a>Bangkok is sinking.Spilling out across the delta of the Chao Phraya River, the Thai capital was once known as the Venice of the East for its network of canals. Agricultural land once absorbed seasonal flooding and cycles of monsoon rain;Today, thanks to explosive development, many of those waterways have been filled with cement. As the city of water, Bangkok is no longer the porous landscape: there is minimal green space and excessive construction.The lack of permeable surface in the urban landscape compounds these issues. With nowhere for water to go, Bangkok has become notorious for frequent, destructive floods, sometimes after as little as 30 minutes of rain.\u00a0The reality is that this city of 20 million people, built on shifting river mud, is sinking at the rate of more than one centimeter a year and could be below sea level as soon as 2030.<\/p>\n

One of the larger anti-flooding projects is Chulalongkorn University Centenary Park, an 11-acre green space that can hold up to a million gallons of rainwater. As TED notes, Bangkok-based landscape architecture firm Landprocess designed the park to address flooding in its surrounding neighborhoods.<\/p>\n

According to Siemens Green City Index, Bangkok has just 3.3 square meters of green space per person (by contrast, Manila has 5; Paris, 11; Shanghai, 13.5; New York City, 23.1; London, 27; Singapore, 66).The Cu park was opened in March 2017 in the Chulalongkorn University campus near Bangkok’s downtown. Covering 11 acres (44,415 square meters), the land is valued at us $ 700 million. Kotchakkorn voraakhom, founder of Landprocess, who grew up in Bangkok led the design plan of the project.<\/p>\n

Kotchakorn Voraakhom\u4eb2\u773c\u76ee\u7779\u5979\u7684\u57ce\u5e02\u53d8\u6210\u4e86\u5bc6\u96c6\u7684\u6df7\u51dd\u571f\u4e1b\u6797\u3002\u201c\u6211\u5e74\u8f7b\u7684\u65f6\u5019\uff0c\u57ce\u91cc\u6709\u7a3b\u7530\u548c\u8fd0\u6cb3\uff0c\u201d\u5979\u56de\u5fc6\u9053\uff1a\u201c\u6211\u80fd\u542c\u5230\u4ece\u6211\u5728\u66fc\u8c37\u5e02\u4e2d\u5fc3\u7684\u623f\u5b50\u91cc\u4f20\u6765\u7684\u8239\u53ea\u7684\u58f0\u97f3\u3002\u73b0\u5728\uff0c\u6240\u6709\u8fd9\u4e9b\u7530\u5730\u548c\u8fd0\u6cb3\u90fd\u88ab\u6df7\u51dd\u571f\u5835\u585e\uff0c\u88ab\u9ad8\u697c\u6240\u8986\u76d6\u3002\u6240\u6709\u7684\u5efa\u7b51\u548c\u6df7\u51dd\u571f\u90fd\u6210\u4e3a\u6392\u6c34\u7684\u969c\u788d\uff0c\u6240\u4ee5\u57ce\u5e02\u88ab\u6d2a\u6c34\u6df9\u6ca1\u3002\u201d<\/p>\n

Kotchakorn Voraakhom watched firsthand as her city became a dense concrete jungle. \u201cWhen I was young, there were rice fields and canals in the city,\u201d she remembers. \u201cI could hear boats from my house in central Bangkok. Now, all those fields and canals have been stopped with concrete and covered by highrises. All of the buildings and concrete become obstacles for water to drain, so the city floods.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u5728\u8bbe\u8ba1\u8fd9\u4e2a\u516c\u56ed\u65f6\uff0cVoraakhom\u7684\u7075\u611f\u4e3b\u8981\u6765\u81ea\u4e24\u65b9\u9762\uff1a\u4e00\u662f\u96e8\u6811\uff0c\u4e8c\u662f\u7334\u5b50\u7684\u8138\u988a\u3002\u6cf0\u56fd\u6700\u53e4\u8001\u7684\u9ad8\u7b49\u6559\u80b2\u673a\u6784\u6731\u62c9\u9686\u529f\u5927\u5b66(Chulalongkorn University)\u59d4\u6258\u8fd9\u5ea7\u5927\u5b66\u6765\u5e86\u795d\u5176100\u5c81\u751f\u65e5\u3002\u56e0\u6b64\uff0c\u5f53\u6c83\u62c9\u5eb7\u5f00\u59cb\u5979\u7684\u521d\u6b65\u8bbe\u8ba1\u65f6\uff0c\u5979\u8f6c\u5411\u4e86\u5b66\u6821\u7684\u6807\u5fd7\uff1a\u96e8\u6811\u3002Voraakhom\u8bf4\uff1a\u201c\u5b83\u6709\u4e00\u4e2a\u975e\u5e38\u91cd\u8981\u7684\u3001\u5f71\u54cd\u6df1\u8fdc\u7684\u6839\u7cfb\uff0c\u679d\u5e72\u4f38\u5c55\u8fc7\u5ea6\uff0c\u4e3a\u5468\u56f4\u73af\u5883\u521b\u9020\u4e86\u836b\u853d\u548c\u751f\u6001\u3002\u8fd9\u4e2a\u516c\u56ed\u662f\u4e3a\u793e\u4f1a\u521b\u9020\u8fd9\u68f5\u5927\u96e8\u6811\u7684\u9690\u55bb\u3002\u6211\u4eec\u5e0c\u671b\u8fd9\u79cd\u7eff\u8272\u57fa\u7840\u8bbe\u65bd\u50cf\u6811\u6839\u4e00\u6837\u6269\u5c55\u5230\u57ce\u5e02\u3002\u201d<\/p>\n

\nIn designing the park, Voraakhom had two major inspirations: the rain tree and a monkey\u2019s cheeks. Chulalongkorn University, the oldest institution of higher education in Thailand, commissioned the space to celebrate its 100th birthday. So when Voraakhom began her preliminary designs, she turned to the university\u2019s symbol: the rain tree. \u201cIt has a very significant, far-reaching root system, and the branches overreach and create shade and ecology for its surroundings,\u201d Voraakhom says. \u201cThis park is a metaphor for creating this big rain tree for society. We want this green infrastructure to expand like a root of a tree into the city.\u201d<\/p>\n
