Inherent in the idea of creating a retreat are imbedded concepts of privacy, safety and refuge. By creating a private space away from the frenetic rhythms of the everyday, one finds the possibility to relax, to reconnect with oneself and more completely understand the natural environment that is all around. It is through this separation from the everyday, this quieting of the mind, that a deeper connection is understood with the self. The building seeks to foster self discovery not only by creating a sense of privacy through it\u2019s many protective layers, but once inhabited, aspires to dissolve away . . . leaving the inhabitant and nature to become reacquainted.<\/p>\n

Site\/Program<\/p>\n

The Sonoma Retreat was created as a private exercise, meditation and relaxation space for a businessman and his family. The building, while adjacent to the main house, was sited far enough away to provide complete privacy while in use. The program involved the creation of a primary meditation \/ workout \/ yoga studio with an adjacent steam room, changing rooms, bathroom, refreshment bar, private sundeck and an outdoor shower.<\/p>\n

Design<\/p>\n

Located on ten acres of rolling hillside above the town of Sonoma in Northern California this private retreat is a freestanding structure adjacent to an existing rammed earth house. Partially hidden amongst a grove of Oaks, Manzanita and Madrone, two curved earthen walls gently carve into the landscape to create the entry to the intimate retreat below. Topography, orientation and landscape are all considered in the choreography of experience, heightening one\u2019s sense of discovery, privacy and ultimately the serenity of escape.<\/p>\n

\u8fd9\u5ea7\u5efa\u7b51\u7684\u5f62\u5f0f\u662f\u7531\u4e00\u7cfb\u5217\u7b80\u5355\u7684\u6749\u6728\u7a7a\u95f4\u5b9a\u4e49\u7684\uff0c\u8fd9\u4e9b\u7a7a\u95f4\u4e0e\u5468\u56f4\u666f\u89c2\u5f62\u6210\u4e86\u5bf9\u6bd4\u3002\u8fd9\u4e9b\u6749\u6728\u4e0d\u4ec5\u9650\u5b9a\u548c\u56fa\u5b9a\u4e86\u76f8\u90bb\u7684\u7a7a\u95f4\uff0c\u800c\u4e14\u5b83\u4eec\u521b\u9020\u4e86\u4f5c\u4e3a\u64a4\u9000\u548c\u5ba4\u5916\u6dcb\u6d74\u5165\u53e3\u7684\u5b54\u6d1e\u3002\u76f4\u7ebf\u5f62\u5f0f\u4f9d\u6b21\u7531\u5f2f\u66f2\u7684\u5899\u58c1\u7ec4\u6210\uff0c\u8fd9\u4f7f\u5f97\u5408\u6210\u7684\u7a7a\u95f4\u80fd\u591f\u94bb\u5165\u5730\u4e0b\u3002\u56de\u6536\u67da\u6728\u5236\u6210\u7684\u6728\u8d28\u7532\u677f\u5c06\u5ba4\u5185\u7a7a\u95f4\u5ef6\u4f38\u5230\u666f\u89c2\u4e2d\uff0c\u6a21\u7cca\u4e86\u5185\u5916\u7684\u754c\u9650\u3002\u5efa\u7b51\u7684\u9009\u5740\u548c\u89c4\u5212\u5e03\u5c40\u5229\u7528\u5efa\u7b51\u7684\u4f53\u91cf\u548c\u81ea\u7136\u5730\u5f62\u6765\u5c4f\u853d\u73b0\u6709\u623f\u5c4b\uff0c\u540c\u65f6\u4fdd\u7559\u4e1c\u5357\u7684\u5168\u666f\u3002\u677e\u6811\u7684\u6811\u51a0\u6f02\u6d6e\u5728\u5c4b\u9876\u4e0a\u65b9\uff0c\u4e3a\u5efa\u7b51\u7269\u7684\u5357\u7acb\u9762\u548c\u5b83\u7684\u906e\u9633\u677f\u63d0\u4f9b\u4e86\u5fc5\u8981\u7684\u906e\u836b\u3002\u5357\u9762\u7684\u6811\u6728\u6709\u65f6\u4f1a\u63d0\u4f9b\u989d\u5916\u7684\u6591\u9a73\u9634\u5f71\uff0c\u9732\u51fa\u9644\u8fd1\u7684\u5c71\u9e93\u548c\u8fdc\u5904\u65e7\u91d1\u5c71\u7684\u666f\u8272\u3002<\/p>\n

The building\u2019s form is defined by a collection of simple rustic cedar boxes that provide a counterpoint to the surrounding landscape. These boxes not only define and anchor the contiguous spaces, but they create apertures that act as the entry to the retreat and outdoor shower. The rectilinear forms are in turn cradled by the curving walls, which allow the resultant space to burrow into the earth. A wood deck of reclaimed teak extends interior space out into the landscape, obscuring the boundaries between inside and outside. The siting of the architecture and the configuration of the plan use the building\u2019s mass and the natural topography to screen the retreat from the existing house while retaining panoramic views to the southeast. A canopy of cantilevered lodgepole pine floats above the roof, providing much needed shade to the southern face of the building and its\u2019 sundeck. Trees to the south provide additional dappled shade at times opening to reveal the nearby foothills and views of San Francisco beyond.<\/p>\n

\u522b\u5885\u88ab\u7cbe\u5fc3\u5e03\u7f6e\u5728\u73b0\u6709\u7684\u6811\u6728\u4e4b\u95f4\uff0c\u4ee5\u51cf\u5c11\u5efa\u7b51\u5bf9\u6811\u6728\u8106\u5f31\u7684\u6839\u7cfb\u7f51\u7edc\u7684\u5f71\u54cd\uff0c\u540c\u65f6\u4e5f\u5229\u7528\u6811\u6728\u63d0\u4f9b\u9634\u5f71\u3002\u5c4b\u9876\u7684\u6311\u6a90\u53ef\u4ee5\u5728\u51ac\u5b63\u589e\u52a0\u592a\u9633\u70ed\u91cf\uff0c\u5e76\u5728\u590f\u5b63\u4e3a\u52a0\u5229\u798f\u5c3c\u4e9a\u5f3a\u70c8\u7684\u9633\u5149\u63d0\u4f9b\u906e\u9633\u3002\u5f2f\u677f\u5f62\u6210\u7684\u6df7\u51dd\u571f\u5899\u4e5f\u6709\u52a9\u4e8e\u901a\u8fc7\u63d0\u4f9b\u989d\u5916\u7684\u70ed\u9547\u6d41\u5668\u6765\u8c03\u8282\u6e29\u5ea6\uff0c\u5e2e\u52a9\u4fdd\u6301\u5185\u90e8\u6e29\u5ea6\u3002\u5728\u5929\u6c14\u5141\u8bb8\u7684\u60c5\u51b5\u4e0b\uff0c\u6574\u4e2a\u5357\u90e8\u548c\u4e1c\u90e8\u7684\u73bb\u7483\u5e55\u5899\u4f1a\u6ed1\u52a8\uff0c\u5e76\u5b8c\u5168\u7f29\u56de\u5230\u5899\u58c1\u4e2d\u3002\u8fd9\u6709\u5229\u4e8e\u6c14\u6d41\u901a\u8fc7\u5efa\u7b51\u7269\uff0c\u6d88\u9664\u4e86\u5bf9\u7a7a\u8c03\u7a7a\u6c14\u7684\u9700\u6c42\u3002<\/p>\n

Sustainability<\/p>\n

The retreat was carefully sited amongst the existing trees to minimize the building\u2019s impact on the tree\u2019s fragile root network while also taking advantage of the shade the trees provide. Deep roof overhangs allow for solar heat gain in the Winter and provide shade from the intense California sun during the Summer. The curved board formed concrete walls also aid in regulating temperature by providing additional thermal ballast that helps to maintain the interior temperature. When weather permits, the entire south and east glazed facades slide away and completely retract into the walls. This facilitates airflow through the building and eliminates the need for conditioned air.<\/p>\n

\n\u6700\u540e\uff0c\u5efa\u7b51\u6bcf\u5e74\u7684\u7535\u529b\u8d1f\u8377\u6709\u5f88\u5927\u4e00\u90e8\u5206\u90fd\u88ab\u4e00\u6392\u592a\u9633\u80fd\u5149\u4f0f\u677f\u6240\u62b5\u6d88\uff0c\u8fd9\u4e9b\u592a\u9633\u80fd\u7535\u6c60\u677f\u9690\u85cf\u5728\u89c6\u91ce\u4e4b\u5916\u7684\u5efa\u7b51\u5357\u9762\u7684\u659c\u5761\u4e0a\u3002<\/p>\n

The building\u2019s cedar skin is constructed as a rain screen and deters the capillary action from driving rain found in typical construction. This allows the building to breath, ultimately leading to greater longevity.<\/p>\n

Many of the finished materials within the retreat are reclaimed. The floors, decks and benches came from reclaimed teak timbers. The stone basins within the steam room and changing room were carved from larger pieces of reclaimed limestone.<\/p>\n

Finally much of the building\u2019s yearly electrical load is offset by an array of photovoltaic solar panels that are hidden from view on the southern slope of the site.<\/p>\n
