The key aspects of Sasaki\u2019s culture that inspired me to join the firm back in 1998 are the same today\u2014a passion for curiosity and experimentation, and the depth of knowledge that stems from our interdisciplinary practice.<\/p>\n Because Hideo Sasaki was the Chair of the Department of Landscape Architecture at Harvard University, the foundation of the practice is one that is built upon intellectual curiosity and academic rigor. In many ways, Sasaki feels much like a university. We are in a perpetual state of discovery, experimentation, and research, constantly striving to improve our own practice and the design industry as a whole. This is reflected in our project work as well. We are a firm of ideas, not authors, which means that we don\u2019t gravitate towards any one particular style or trend, but rather take a more holistic view of problem solving. This strategy allows us to tackle complex projects, looking at them from multiple perspectives as part of an iterative design process. These are often driven by demographics, political forces, investment priorities, geography, and a host of other contributing factors. Therefore, it is difficult to identify any one common problem facing cities in Europe or North America, each of which have their own unique identity and set of issues. What I have learned, however, is that having any one issue dominate more than any other leads to problems. I grew up in Cleveland, Ohio, which, at the time, was very much an industrial city focused on steel production and all of its associated manufacturing-based industries. Much like Detroit and other \u201crust belt\u201d cities, Cleveland experienced economic decline when it did not maintain its focus on global connectivity, innovation, and a host of other outside forces. Today, I live in Boston, which has a much more robust and diverse economy centered on education, healthcare, technology, and finance. The common denominator in Boston is that all of these diverse sectors have a direct relationship with the area\u2019s multiple academic institutions. Boston\u2019s world-class universities supply a never-ending supply of knowledge, talent, research, and innovation that allow its economy to adapt to rapid change. This means that cities need to celebrate their universities and invest in education, incentivize innovation and research, promote diversity in economic sectors and in demographics, have transparency in governance, provide affordable housing, create arts and cultural uses for enjoyment and intellectual enrichment, invest in infrastructure and public transit to improve mobility, and connect to the larger global community. Design alone cannot solve all of these issues, but we can certainly help make effective policy decisions a physical reality.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n \u7136\u800c\uff0c\u6240\u6709\u57ce\u5e02\u9762\u4e34\u7684\u4e00\u4e2a\u5171\u540c\u6311\u6218\u5c31\u662f<\/span>\u6c14\u5019\u53d8\u5316\u3002<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n \u6211\u4eec\u90fd\u53d7\u5230\u73af\u5883\u53d8\u5316\u7684\u4e25\u91cd\u5f71\u54cd\uff0c\u4ece\u66b4\u98ce\u96e8\u5f3a\u5ea6\u548c\u65f1\u6d9d\u707e\u5bb3\u7684\u589e\u52a0\uff0c\u5230\u706b\u707e\u548c\u9965\u8352\u95ee\u9898\uff0c\u5b83\u4eec\u5bf9\u57ce\u5e02\u7684\u5f71\u54cd\u5c06\u5927\u5927\u5730\u6539\u53d8\u6211\u4eec\u7684\u751f\u6d3b\u65b9\u5f0f\u3002\u540c\u6837\u5730\uff0c\u6ca1\u6709\u4e00\u4e2a\u57ce\u5e02\u53ef\u4ee5\u89e3\u51b3\u8fd9\u4e2a\u95ee\u9898\u3002\u5f39\u6027\u7b56\u7565\u975e\u5e38\u91cd\u8981\uff0c\u4f46\u5b83\u4eec\u53ea\u80fd\u7f13\u89e3\u75c7\u72b6\uff0c\u5e76\u4e0d\u80fd\u6839\u9664\u95ee\u9898\u3002\u6211\u4eec\u5fc5\u987b\u5171\u540c\u52aa\u529b\uff0c\u4e00\u8d77\u904f\u5236\u6c14\u5019\u53d8\u5316\u7684\u8bf1\u56e0\u2014\u2014\u77f3\u6cb9\u6d88\u8017\u5bfc\u81f4\u7684\u6e29\u5ba4\u6c14\u4f53\u6392\u653e\uff0c\u8fd9\u662f\u6211\u4eec\u9700\u8981\u89e3\u51b3\u7684\u9996\u8981\u95ee\u9898\u3002\u8981\u771f\u6b63\u5b9e\u73b0\u201c\u57ce\u5e02\u66f4\u65b0\u201d\uff0c\u90a3\u4e48\u6240\u6709\u57ce\u5e02\u5fc5\u987b\u5148\u5b9e\u73b0\u80fd\u6e90\u5e73\u8861\u3002<\/p>\n The one common denominator that all cities face, however, is climate change. We are all acutely affected by changes in our environment, and the impacts to our cities\u2014ranging from increasing storms intensity and floods to drought, fire, and famine\u2014will dramatically change the way we live. Again, no one city can solve this problem. Resiliency strategies are important, but they address the symptom, not the source. We all must work together to curb the contributing factor to climate change\u2014greenhouse gas emissions as a result of fossil fuel consumption\u2014as our most important priority. To experience true \u201curban renewal,\u201d all cities must become energy neutral.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Q\uff1a\u60a8\u53c2\u4e0e\u8fc7\u5f88\u591a\u5927\u5c3a\u5ea6\u7684\u89c4\u5212\u9879\u76ee\uff0c\u8fd9\u4e9b\u9879\u76ee\u662f\u5426\u5177\u6709\u4e00\u5b9a\u7684\u524d\u77bb\u6027\uff0c\u662f\u5426\u89e3\u51b3\u4e86\u5f53\u4e0b\u5b58\u5728\u7684\u793e\u4f1a\u53ca\u73af\u5883\u95ee\u9898\uff1f\u60a8\u7684\u8bbe\u8ba1\u7ecf\u9a8c\u5bf9\u4e8e\u5c0f\u5c3a\u5ea6\u9879\u76ee\u662f\u5426\u5177\u6709\u666e\u9002\u6027\uff1f\u5982\u4f55\u6307\u5bfc\u5c0f\u5c3a\u5ea6\u7684\u57ce\u5e02\u7a7a\u95f4\u8bbe\u8ba1\uff1f<\/b><\/p>\n You have participated in many large-scale planning projects. Are these projects forward-looking and have they solved the current social and environmental problems? Is there any general applicability in your design experience for small-scale projects? Cities, regions, and countries that effectively adapt a long-range planning strategy are better prepared for a changing global landscape. That said, it is critical that these strategies are flexible and not dogmatic so that they may adapt to changing conditions. I believe that all of the planning work we do at Sasaki plays a key role in solving social and environmental issues. Our design frameworks often address strategies to increase the conservation of vulnerable habitats, provide public open space and improve the public realm, address water quality issues with landscape infrastructure, create a variety of uses to encourage economic and cultural diversification, address mobility and transit strategies, and provide a range of housing strategies to allow for all people to regardless of income to have a good quality of life. By their very nature, all planning projects must be forward-looking, and address the unknown. This is where Sasaki\u2019s focus on the intersection of research and design play an important role. Our design thinking always transcends scales, which is a result of our multiple disciplines working together. While planners might be focusing on policy, landscape architects are looking equally at systems and details, and architects and engineers are designing discreet site-specific solutions. Much like an orchestra, each of these instruments are unique in their own right, but are much more impactful when, carefully conducted, they come together to create a symphonic work of art.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n Q\uff1a\u4e2d\u56fd\u5728\u524d<\/b>30<\/b>\u5e74\u57fa\u672c\u4e0a\u662f\u98de\u901f\u53d1\u5c55\u7684\uff0c\u8fd9\u79cd\u5feb\u901f\u589e\u957f\u7684\u80cc\u540e\u60a8\u8ba4\u4e3a\u7ed9\u57ce\u5e02\u73af\u5883\u5e26\u6765\u4e86\u54ea\u4e9b\u95ee\u9898\uff1f\u5728<\/b>Sasaki<\/b>\u7684\u9879\u76ee\u4e2d\u662f\u5982\u4f55\u56de\u5e94\u8fd9\u4e9b\u95ee\u9898\u7684\uff1f<\/b><\/p>\n China has developed rapidly in the past 30 years. What problems do you think have brought to the urban environment in light of this rapid growth? How does Sasaki\u2019s work respond to these questions?<\/b><\/p>\n <\/p>\n Sasaki\u5728\u4e2d\u56fd\u5927\u9646\u7684\u7b2c\u4e00\u4e2a\u9879\u76ee\u662f\u57281998\u5e74\uff0c\u6211\u672c\u8eab\u5df2\u7ecf\u670920\u5e74\u7684\u4e2d\u56fd\u9879\u76ee\u7ecf\u9a8c\u3002\u4e2d\u56fd\u6bcf\u4e2a\u57ce\u5e02\u90fd\u6709\u81ea\u5df1\u7279\u5b9a\u7684\u73af\u5883\u95ee\u9898\uff0c\u4f46\u603b\u7684\u6765\u8bf4\uff0c\u6211\u8ba4\u4e3a\u4e00\u4e9b\u666e\u904d\u7684\u95ee\u9898\u4e0e\u73af\u5883\u4fdd\u62a4\u548c\u751f\u5883\u4e27\u5931\u3001\u57ce\u5e02\u516c\u5171\u7a7a\u95f4\u8d28\u91cf\u4ee5\u53ca\u793e\u533a\u7684\u6295\u5165\u548c\u53c2\u4e0e\u5ea6\u6709\u5173\u3002<\/p>\n \u6211\u4eec\u5728\u4e2d\u56fd\u7684\u9879\u76ee\u4e3b\u8981\u96c6\u4e2d\u5728\u6062\u590d\u751f\u6001\u548c\u751f\u5883\u4fdd\u62a4\u7684\u89c4\u5212\u548c\u5efa\u8bbe\u5de5\u7a0b\u4e0a\u3002\u4f8b\u5982\u6211\u4eec\u5728\u4e0a\u6d77\u5609\u5b9a\u516c\u56ed\u5c06\u6e20\u5316\u6c34\u9053\u6539\u9020\u6210\u8f6f\u8fb9\u6c34\u9053\uff0c\u6c34\u9053\u91cc\u79cd\u6709\u5927\u91cf\u7684\u80fd\u591f\u5438\u5f15\u4e24\u6816\u52a8\u3001\u9c7c\u7c7b\u3001\u6c34\u79bd\u548c\u76ca\u866b\u7684\u672c\u571f\u690d\u7269\uff0c\u800c\u8fd9\u4e9b\u690d\u7269\u4e4b\u524d\u5e76\u672a\u751f\u957f\u5728\u8fd9\u91cc\u3002\u6211\u4eec\u8fd8\u4e0e\u534e\u4e1c\u5e08\u8303\u5927\u5b66\u5408\u4f5c\uff0c\u5bf9\u8be5\u516c\u56ed\u6c34\u9053\u6539\u9020\u524d\u540e\u8fdb\u884c\u4e86\u7814\u7a76\u5bf9\u6bd4\uff0c\u6d4b\u8bc4\u516c\u56ed\u5185\u7684\u6c34\u8d28\u6539\u5584\u60c5\u51b5\u3002<\/p>\n Sasaki\u2019s first project in mainland China was in 1998, and I have spent all 20 years of my career working in the region. Each city in China has its own individual set of problems specific to its context, but in general I believe some universal issues are related to environmental protection and habitat loss, quality of the urban public realm, and community input and participation.<\/p>\n At Sasaki, our work in China has focused on restorative ecology and habitat conservation at both the planning and built-work scales. For example, our work at Jiading Park in Shanghai transformed channelized canals into soft-edged waterways that are abundant with native plants that are attracting amphibians, fish, waterfowl, and beneficial insects\u2014none of which existed on the site previously. In fact, we even collaborated with East China Normal University to conduct a post-occupancy study of the park which measured improvements to water quality because of our design interventions.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n \u25bc\u4e0a\u6d77\u5609\u5b9a\u516c\u56ed \u00a0Jiading Central Park<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n <\/p>\n \u4eca\u5929\u7684\u516c\u56ed\u4e2d\uff0c\u5f80\u65e5\u6c61\u6d4a\u7684\u8fd0\u6cb3\u548c\u8086\u610f\u7684\u84dd\u85fb\u65e9\u5df2\u4e0d\u89c1\u8e2a\u5f71\uff0c\u53d6\u800c\u4ee3\u4e4b\u7684\u662f\u6e05\u6f88\u7684\u6cb3\u6c34\u548c\u5782\u9493\u7684\u6e14\u7fc1\uff1b\u6614\u65e5\u55a7\u56a3\u7684\u9a6c\u8def\u5df2\u4e0d\u518d\u7126\u8e81\uff0c\u53d8\u5f62\u4e3a\u5e7d\u9759\u7684\u6797\u9634\u6b65\u9053 \u00a0Today’s park features clear water and fishermen where dirty canals and algae blooms once proliferated. A quiet promenade takes the place of a noisy roadway.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n <\/p>\n \u6e7f\u5730\u4e0e\u6797\u5730\u7684\u4fee\u590d\u6539\u5584\u4e86\u516c\u56ed\u6c34\u4f53\u548c\u7a7a\u6c14\u8d28\u91cf\uff0c\u57f9\u517b\u4e86\u672c\u5730\u751f\u7269\u7fa4\u843d\uff0c\u589e\u52a0\u4e86\u751f\u7269\u591a\u6837\u6027 \u00a0Restored wetland and woodland has drastically improved water and air quality and biodiversity.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n <\/p>\n \u5728\u6210\u90fd\uff0c\u6211\u4eec\u6b63\u4e3a69\u5e73\u65b9\u516c\u91cc\u7684\u6210\u90fd\u718a\u732b\u4fdd\u62a4\u533a\u5b9a\u5236\u603b\u4f53\u89c4\u5212\uff0c\u89c4\u5212\u8bbe\u8ba1\u57fa\u4e8e\u5404\u9879\u6b63\u5728\u8fdb\u884c\u4e2d\u7684\u7814\u7a76\u5de5\u4f5c\uff0c\u91cd\u70b9\u5173\u6ce8\u6816\u606f\u5730\u7684\u6062\u590d\u548c\u7814\u7a76\uff0c\u4ee5\u53ca\u5c06\u718a\u732b\u653e\u5f52\u91ce\u5916\u7684\u7b56\u7565\u3002\u8fd9\u4e9b\u9879\u76ee\u53ea\u662f\u6211\u4eec\u5bf9\u73af\u5883\u548c\u4eba\u7c7b\u53d1\u5c55\u601d\u8003\u7684\u4e00\u5c0f\u90e8\u5206\u4f8b\u5b50\uff0c\u6211\u4eec\u7684\u89c4\u5212\u5e08\u3001\u57ce\u5e02\u8bbe\u8ba1\u5e08\u3001\u5efa\u7b51\u5e08\u3001\u666f\u89c2\u8bbe\u8ba1\u5e08\u548c\u751f\u6001\u5b66\u5bb6\u90fd\u6b63\u5728\u4e3a\u540c\u4e00\u4e2a\u76ee\u6807\u800c\u594b\u6597\u7740\u3002<\/p>\n In Chengdu, we are working on protecting 69 square kilometers at the Chengdu Panda Reserve which builds upon ongoing research efforts and focuses on habitat restoration and research, as well as pre-release strategies to integrate juvenile pandas back into the wild. In the United States, we are celebrated for being a firm that is very inclusive of the communities in which we work. Gaining perspective from the constituents who will eventually use the spaces we design\u2014especially public landscapes\u2014is a critical part of our design process that results in a stronger design. When the community is involved in the ideation of a space, they often feel a stronger sense of ownership and therefore tend to appreciate and take better care of these spaces. In China, however, community engagement is a relatively newer concept, though it is one that we feel brings great value to our work and to our clients. At Zhangjiabang Park in Shanghai, we worked with our internal software development team to design a tool which helped the community provide feedback regarding that programmatic uses they would like in the park. And for the Yangtze Riverfront Park in Wuhan, we developed a web-based outreach effort that generated fruitful public support of the design, and consensus on the future of Wuhan\u2019s waterfront. Throughout the design process, over 65,000 public comments were collected, helping to inform the design. Local civic groups also organized a series of public meetings and site tours to promote stewardship of the river\u2019s public landscapes, and local youth were also invited to portray their vision for the waterfront park at an on-site event. When you educate the client with thorough site analysis, you not only help them understand their most valuable resource\u2014their site\u2014but you also take them on an intimate journey of your thought process so that they fully understand the logic behind your design solution. And when you inspire your client with your ideas, you are allowing them to dream and have a shared vision that you both are responsible for making a reality.<\/p>\n To be truly successful, you must do both. If you educate but don\u2019t inspire, you may provide the client with a good grounding for future work, but you have not done enough to help them visualize the solution. When you inspire without educating, you leave the client with an arbitrary design idea that has no real grounding in its unique context or their specific needs. The best projects result from a process where Sasaki and our clients are working as a collaborative team, sharing ideas and having an ongoing and honest dialogue so that we fully understand each other\u2019s perspective and reach the solution together.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n Q\uff1a\u60a8\u5728\u6267\u884c\u4e2d\u56fd\u9879\u76ee\u6216\u8005\u4e9a\u6d32\u9879\u76ee\u7684\u8fc7\u7a0b\u4e2d\u9047\u5230\u8fc7\u54ea\u4e9b\u56f0\u96be\uff1f\u662f\u5426\u7559\u6709\u9057\u61be\uff1f<\/b><\/p>\n What difficulties have you encountered while you are doing Chinese case or Asia case? Design is an iterative process which takes time and effort. The first idea is not always the best, and the creative spark is not something that just happens once you sign the contract. Design needs to go through a methodical process to ensure that multiple inputs are considered and tested.<\/p>\n In China, the pace of work often truncates this process. Sometimes this can result in something truly innovative and new, while other times it can lead to missed opportunities to do something transformational and exceptional. For a great project to materialize, it must evolve from a mutual respect between the designer and the client. Everyone is busy, whether you are a developer, a government official, or a designer. We must respect each other\u2019s ideas, feedback, and time, working together towards a shared goal. I don\u2019t have any personal regrets, though I am disappointed when schedules aren\u2019t respected, agreements aren\u2019t honored, and designers are treated as a commodity rather than a partner to help the client achieve their vision.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n Q\uff1a\u5982\u4eca\u4e2d\u56fd\u7684\u57ce\u5e02\u53d1\u5c55\u6b63\u9762\u4e34\u7740\u4e00\u4e2a\u4ece\u91cf\u53d8\u5230\u8d28\u53d8\u7684\u8fc7\u7a0b\uff0c\u60a8\u8ba4\u4e3a\u5f53\u4e0b\u8bbe\u8ba1\u5b9e\u8df5\u7684\u524d\u666f\u548c\u673a\u9047\u662f\u4ec0\u4e48\uff1f<\/b><\/p>\n China’s urban development is transitioning from quantitative to qualitative models. What do you think are the prospects and opportunities for current design practice?<\/b><\/p>\n <\/p>\n \u4eb2\u8eab\u7ecf\u5386\u8bbe\u8ba1\u4ece\u91cf\u53d8\u5230\u8d28\u53d8\u662f\u4e00\u79cd\u5947\u5999\u7684\u4f53\u9a8c\uff0c\u4e2d\u56fd\u5c31\u50cf\u662f\u4e00\u4e2a\u79d1\u6280\u521d\u521b\u4f01\u4e1a\u2014\u2014\u4ece\u5931\u610f\u5230\u91cd\u632f\u65d7\u9f13\uff0c\u4ece\u8fc7\u53bb\u7684\u9519\u8bef\u4e2d\u5438\u53d6\u6559\u8bad\uff0c\u4e0d\u65ad\u5f00\u62d3\u65b0\u7684\u9053\u8def\uff0c\u5728\u4e0b\u4e00\u6ce2\u6d6a\u6f6e\u4e2d\u521b\u9020\u51fa\u66f4\u597d\u7684\u4e8b\u7269\u3002\u4ece\u91cf\u53d8\u5230\u8d28\u53d8\u662f\u521b\u65b0\u8fc7\u7a0b\u4e2d\u7684\u5fc5\u7ecf\u4e4b\u8def\uff0c\u4f46\u662f\u8fd9\u79cd\u7c7b\u578b\u7684\u53d1\u5c55\u4e00\u822c\u4e0d\u4f1a\u7ecf\u5386\u5f97\u90a3\u4e48\u5feb\u3002\u76ee\u524d\u7f8e\u56fd\u4ecd\u7136\u5728\u4ece\u51e0\u5341\u5e74\u524d\u5728\u57ce\u5e02\u57fa\u7840\u8bbe\u65bd\u3001\u4ea4\u901a\u3001\u57ce\u5e02\u8bbe\u8ba1\u548c\u516c\u5171\u9886\u57df\u65b9\u9762\u72af\u4e0b\u7684\u9519\u8bef\u4e2d\u6162\u6162\u6062\u590d\u548c\u7ea0\u6b63\u3002\u5c3d\u7ba1\u4e2d\u56fd\u5728\u57ce\u5e02\u53d1\u5c55\u4e4b\u8def\u4e0a\u51fa\u73b0\u4e86\u4e00\u4e9b\u96be\u4ee5\u907f\u514d\u7684\u9519\u8bef\uff0c\u4f46\u7531\u4e8e\u5927\u5bb6\u5bf9\u7ea0\u6b63\u9519\u8bef\u60f3\u6cd5\u548c\u5c1d\u8bd5\u65b0\u9c9c\u4e8b\u7269\u79c9\u627f\u7740\u5f00\u653e\u5305\u5bb9\u7684\u6001\u5ea6\uff0c\u8fd9\u4e9b\u9519\u8bef\u5f80\u5f80\u90fd\u4f1a\u88ab\u6700\u5c0f\u5316\u3002\u5bf9\u4e8e\u8d70\u91cf\u5f0f\u7684\u53d1\u5c55\u57ce\u5e02\u516c\u5171\u7a7a\u95f4\u5176\u5b9e\u5e76\u4e0d\u4e00\u5b9a\u662f\u4ef6\u574f\u4e8b\uff0c\u56e0\u4e3a\u5b83\u521b\u9020\u4e86\u65b0\u7684\u5f00\u653e\u7a7a\u95f4\uff0c\u800c\u8fd9\u4e9b\u7a7a\u95f4\u53ef\u80fd\u662f\u4ee5\u524d\u6ca1\u6709\u7684\u3002<\/p>\n \u771f\u6b63\u503c\u5f97\u5173\u6ce8\u7684\u662f\u8fd9\u4e9b\u7a7a\u95f4\u6b63\u4e0d\u65ad\u8f6c\u53d8\u4e3a\u8bbe\u8ba1\u7cbe\u7f8e\u3001\u5de5\u827a\u7cbe\u826f\u3001\u73af\u5883\u6548\u76ca\u826f\u597d\u7684\u666f\u89c2\u3002\u8fd9\u624d\u662f\u771f\u6b63\u9700\u8981\u4e13\u4e1a\u8bbe\u8ba1\u4eba\u5458\u7684\u5730\u65b9\uff0c\u4ee5\u786e\u4fdd\u6211\u4eec\u5efa\u9020\u7684\u7a7a\u95f4\u8003\u8651\u5230\u4e86\u573a\u5730\u7684\u53d7\u4f17\u7fa4\u4f53\uff0c\u5b83\u4eec\u5982\u4f55\u878d\u5165\u57ce\u5e02\u73af\u5883\uff0c\u4ee5\u53ca\u5b83\u4eec\u5728\u751f\u6001\u65b9\u9762\u5c06\u505a\u51fa\u4ec0\u4e48\u6837\u7684\u8d21\u732e\u3002\u6240\u6709\u7684\u516c\u5171\u7a7a\u95f4\u90fd\u5e94\u8be5\u901a\u8fc7\u67d0\u79cd\u65b9\u5f0f\u5bf9\u793e\u4f1a\u7684\u6539\u5584\u4f5c\u51fa\u8d21\u732e\uff0c\u4f5c\u4e3a\u8bbe\u8ba1\u5e08\uff0c\u6211\u4eec\u6709\u8d23\u4efb\u4e3a\u4eba\u7c7b\u548c\u5730\u7403\u521b\u9020\u51fa\u6709\u610f\u4e49\u7684\u3001\u6301\u4e45\u7684\u5229\u76ca\u70b9\u3002<\/p>\n Experiencing this transition from quantity to quality of design in real time is an amazing phenomenon. Because of its willingness to try new ideas, China is very much like a tech start-up\u2014falling down, getting back up, learning from past mistakes, and creating something better in the next round. This is a normal part of the innovative process, but this type of evolution is not typically experienced in the physical realm so quickly. In the United States, we are still recovering from and rectifying mistakes made decades ago, in terms of urban infrastructure, transportation, urban design, and the public realm. In China, mistakes are certainly made, but they are often minimized because of an open-minded approach to fixing bad ideas and trying something new. With respect to the urban public realm, quantity wasn\u2019t necessarily a bad thing, as it created new open spaces where they may not have existed before.<\/p>\n The real remarkable change is the ongoing transformation of these spaces into beautifully designed, well-crafted, and environmentally functioning landscapes. This is where the design profession is truly needed, ensuring that the spaces we build consider the people who will use them, how they fit into the urban context, and what they are contributing ecologically. All public spaces should contribute to the betterment of society in some way, and it is our responsibility as designers to provide a meaningful and lasting benefit to humanity and to the planet.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n \u25bc\u6b66\u6c49\u957f\u6c5f\u6ee8\u6c5f\u516c\u56ed\uff0c\u6df1\u5ea6\u601d\u8003\u57ce\u5e02\u7a7a\u95f4\u5982\u4f55\u878d\u5165\u57ce\u5e02\u73af\u5883 \u00a0Wuhan Yangtze Riverfront Park, deep thinking on how urban space\u00a0fits into the urban context.<\/b><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n <\/p>\n \u5728\u5357\u5cb8\u5634\u6807\u5fd7\u6027\u7684\u201c\u6c5f\u6c49\u4e4b\u5fc3\u201d\uff0c\u6e38\u5ba2\u53ef\u7eb5\u89c8\u957f\u6c5f\u6c49\u6c5f\u4ea4\u6c47\u7684\u58ee\u4e3d\u56fe\u666f\u548c\u4e00\u6c34\u4e24\u8272\u7684\u5947\u89c2\uff0c\u6d3b\u8dc3\u7684\u6c5f\u5cb8\u666f\u8c61\u548c\u84ec\u52c3\u7684\u57ce\u5e02\u5929\u9645\u7ebf\u5728\u6b64\u4e00\u89c8\u65e0\u4f59 \u00a0At the iconic \u201cTip of China\u201d\u2014the peninsula at the scenic confluence of the Yangtze the Han rivers\u2014the distinct color of the water of the two rivers clash abruptly with a clearly visible boundary in the middle of the Yangtze. <\/p>\n \u751f\u6001\u8003\u91cf\u662f\u91cd\u70b9\uff0c\u6cbf\u6cb3\u7684\u6ee9\u6d82\u5730\u4e3a\u7ef4\u6301\u533a\u57df\u751f\u6001\u591a\u6837\u6027\u63d0\u4f9b\u4e86\u91cd\u8981\u4fdd\u969c \u00a0The river\u2019s mudflats continue to play a critical role in supporting biodiversity and delivering crucial ecosystem services.<\/b><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n Q\uff1a\u4eba\u7c7b\u793e\u4f1a\u5728\u4e0d\u534f\u8c03\u7684\u53d1\u5c55\u8fc7\u7a0b\u4e2d\u603b\u4f1a\u5e26\u6765\u5404\u79cd\u95ee\u9898\u548c\u77db\u76fe\uff0c\u60a8\u5982\u4f55\u770b\u5f85\u8de8\u5b66\u79d1\u5408\u4f5c\uff0c\u5982\u4f55\u6709\u6548\u7684\u628a\u7814\u7a76\u4e0e\u5b9e\u8df5\u4e4b\u95f4\u7684\u504f\u5dee\u964d\u5230\u6700\u4f4e\uff1f<\/b><\/p>\n Human society always brings various problems and contradictions in the process of uncoordinated development. As an interdisciplinary practice, we directly experience the benefits of a more connected, integrated way of working every day. By collaborating with others, you are consistently enriching yourself, learning from their experience, and developing a shared sense of purpose. Coordination and communication is critical to our work. We strive for the best outcomes possible, which often means turning to experts in areas in which we don\u2019t have deep knowledge. Nothing exists in isolation, and our work is at its best when everyone is contributing.<\/p>\n Design is a continuum, which means that our practice must also constantly innovate and evolve. Recently, we launched the Incubator at Sasaki\u2014a new co-working space which cultivates a network of ambitious and creative people committed to advancing solutions to the major challenges of this generation. The space is designed as a flexible research studio, serving as a catalyst for cross-industry collaboration, bringing academic, professional, and community partners together. First, I am interested in broadening Sasaki\u2019s reach. We are a small firm with a big voice, and I would like to use that voice to influence change and spread the word on how the design professions\u2014especially landscape architecture\u2014can play a key role in helping to find solutions to curb climate change.<\/p>\n I have also been thinking a lot about our responsibility as designers to create spaces that are not only beautiful and poetic, but also function as part of a complete ecosystem. We have honed our design approach over the past few years to become increasingly focused on ecologically-beneficial solutions. The next step is to build more of those types of landscapes, measure their impact with empirical, evidence-based data gathered from post-occupancy evaluations, and learn from those studies to refine our design thinking. The ultimate goal is to create places that are energy and carbon neutral, and that provide necessary green infrastructure and habitat diversity.<\/p>\n Finally, I am interested in ensuring that all of our work is moving towards being more equitable and inclusive. Often, design is reserved for the communities and people that can afford it. Cities tend to direct resources to design high-quality landscapes in highly-visible areas that already have the highest property values.
