NEXT architects<\/strong><\/a>:\u00a0NEXT architects are working on a unique series of bridges all over the world. This time, their latest\u00a0design isn’t an intriguing bat bridge (nominated for the 2016 Dutch Design Awards), but an iconic\u00a0bridge in China: the Lucky Knot. The new steel pedestrian bridge in the Chinese mega city Changsha is\u00a0185 metres long and 24 metres high and fits perfectly in the sequence of extraordinary bridges that\u00a0characterise NEXT’S practice; by explicitly engaging with the local context, the bridge designs offer new\u00a0perspectives.<\/p>\n

The eye-catching Lucky Knot has down-to-earth Dutch roots: NEXT architects holds offices in\u00a0Amsterdam and Beijing. In 2013, after the completion of their breathtaking Melkwegbridge in\u00a0Purmerend, NEXT was invited to take part in an international competition to design a new bridge to be\u00a0constructed over the Dragon King Harbour River in Changsha’s rapidly developing \u2018New Lake District’.<\/p>\n

\u8fd9\u4e2a\u7279\u522b\u7684\u59d4\u6258\u8ba9NEXT\u963f\u59c6\u65af\u7279\u4e39\u56e2\u961f\u548c\u5317\u4eac\u56e2\u961f\u8054\u5408\u8d77\u6765\uff0c\u8bbe\u8ba1\u51fa\u4e86\u8fd9\u4e2a\u72ec\u7279\u7684\u83b7\u5956\u4f5c\u54c1\uff1a\u4e2d\u56fd\u7ed3\u3002\u8377\u5170\u56e2\u961f\u5728\u57fa\u7840\u8bbe\u65bd\u5efa\u8bbe\u548c\u6c34\u8d44\u6e90\u7ba1\u7406\u65b9\u9762\u7684\u4e13\u4e1a\u77e5\u8bc6\u4e0e\u4e2d\u56fd\u56e2\u961f\u5bf9\u5f53\u5730\u73af\u5883\u7684\u8ba4\u77e5\u76f8\u7ed3\u5408\uff0c\u662f\u8bbe\u8ba1\u8fc7\u7a0b\u4e2d\u7684\u5173\u952e\u90e8\u5206\u3002\u8fd9\u5ea7\u6865\u5df2\u7ecf\u6210\u4e3a\u4e86\u4e00\u4e2a\u6807\u5fd7\uff0c\u88abCNN\u9009\u4e3a\u201c\u6253\u7834\u5e38\u89c4\u7684\u6700\u58ee\u89c2\u7684\u6865\u6881\u4e4b\u4e00\u201d\u3002<\/p>\n

For this special commission, the teams in Amsterdam and Beijing joined forces to come up with the\u00a0unique, winning design: the Lucky Knot. Combining the Dutch team’s expertise in infrastructure and\u00a0water management and Chinese team’s perseverance and knowledge of the local context was a crucial\u00a0part of the process. The bridge has already become an icon, and was selected by CNN as one of the\u00a0\u201cmost spectacular bridges that break the mold.”<\/p>\n

The bridge is a key project in developing the area’s public space, and was designed with recreational,\u00a0ecological and tourist activities in mind. The bridge connects multiple levels at different heights (the\u00a0river banks, the road, the higher-placed park as well as the interconnections between them). The final\u00a0shape of the bridge is the result of-literally and metaphorically- knotting all these routes together.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe shape of the Lucky Knot was inspired by the principle of the Mobius ring, as well as by the\u00a0Chinese knotting art. Thanks to its remarkable LED\u00a0lightshow, the bridge is set to become a landmark attraction in the light route that traces the path of\u00a0the Dragon King Harbour River.<\/p>\n
