FLAD : In the interpretation of spatial scale, a continuous and layered landscape system is constructed so that the language of landscape not only presents the beauty of form but also effectively responds to the actual needs of the site. Through the organic integration of interior and exterior spaces, the boundary between architecture and landscape is dissolved, achieving a seamless connection between function and perception. Ultimately, this creates an immersive garden office space for users, designed to accommodate an 8-hour work rhythm while offering a restorative environment.
Hangzhou’s vitality lies in the effortless transition between the city and nature. We sought to capture this sense of “ambiguity” and “permeation” inherent in the local culture, refining it into the foundational landscape language of the project. This is not merely an office park, but a living container with multiple identities: exclusive standalone buildings offering a distinctive experience, independent outdoor terraces extending the radius of work, and themed gardens that evolve with the seasons, infusing the daily office routine with natural poetry. At the same time, we rationally addressed the stormwater runoff control requirements of the sponge city concept, meticulously reorganizing the ground-level parking. All these design balances and trade-offs are made to present an office landscape on this site that resonates with the charm of Hangzhou and truly understands its users.
Project Background: The project is located in the Xiasha District of Hangzhou. The building complex on site forms a rigorous planning pattern through a crisscrossing road network. The core design features a main east-west landscape axis, from which five introverted courtyard spaces are derived, establishing an overall structure of “one leading axis, five symbiotic courtyards, and ten scenic accents.” Within this framework, the mission of the landscape design is to transform itself into a resilient “soft mesh,” connecting and bridging the various functional zones with a flowing gesture, seamlessly integrating the rigorous architectural logic with a dynamic natural experience.
The design was inspired by repeated “wanderings” through Hangzhou. As we moved between the city and the mountains, we were always moved by its classic spatial treatments: the connection of Xiling Seal Society with the southern foot of Solitary Hill taught us how pavilions and terraces can be arranged in rhythmic harmony by following the terrain; the interplay of revelation and concealment between Guozhuang Garden and West Lake revealed how visual guidance can create a dialogue between interior and exterior spaces. These insights ultimately crystallized into the core concept of this design.

Interface and Image: Leisurely Ease (Picking chrysanthemums by the eastern hedge, afar I see the southern mountains). The gateway design continues the architectural facade language by extending and staggering the entrance boundary to create planting terraces of varying heights. These terraces, in a modest and low-profile manner, echo the existing street trees preserved outside the site, together outlining a pure white interface that achieves a gentle transition between architecture, landscape, and nature.

Clear Moon (“Beyond the Lake Viewing Pavilion half the mountain green, across the water a bridge casts a cold sheen.”). The Clear Moon Pavilion quietly stands on the axis, its dynamic form breaking the building’s orderly sequence to become the first inviting rest point at the entrance. Elevated planting beds allow the pavilion to echo the distant mountains, as the structure nestles among the greenery, its volume gently dissolved. The floating bridge, cascading pools, and dry stream seem to whisper the convergence of clear springs; looking up, one can await the full moon within the pavilion, capturing the essence of Eastern aesthetics in this confined space.

Blooming Terrace (“The sea of flowers stretches endlessly, brilliantly colorful like a rainbow.”). This is the showcase window of the garden office. The soft plant communities gently dissolve the hard lines and the sense of efficient indifference typical of office parks. The “canyon” space built against the feature wall cleverly achieves a dual function: from the interior, it enhances visual privacy when looking out; for pedestrians on the central axis outdoors, it provides a garden tableau for viewing, resting, and healing, allowing fatigue to dissipate amidst the greenery. The stepped area alongside transforms into a garden meeting room, ready for teams to spark inspiration.

Illusory Realm (“Water meets the sky in distant view, green terraces like tripods, clustered small pagodas in lieu.”). This is the open and shared central activity space, its spatial framework defined by two states: on regular days, it serves as a tranquil, everyday blank space; on event days, it accommodates flexible functional arrangements. This gentle adaptability makes it an organic link, connecting the building’s hard edges with the soft natural environment.

Autumn Crispness (“Wild geese fly in the vast, dimming sun and moon so bright; green maple leaves turn red, with frostlike dews in night.”). The themed四季 courtyard, using the seasonal changes of plants as its brushstroke, outlines the contours of time. Clustered Acer truncatum (Purpleblow Maple) serve as the backbone species, supporting the courtyard’s scenery throughout the year. The flowing curves of the building facade extend downwards, quietly disappearing into the depths of the courtyard, erasing the boundary between inside and out. Carefully selected outdoor furniture is scattered throughout, providing a naturally scented living room for small meetings and brainstorming sessions.
