TOPSCAPE: Facing the sea across from Yangma Island, the West Bank Park looks out toward the mouth of the Yuniou River and is backed by the upcoming Longhu commercial development. With such rich boundary conditions, simply creating an ecological park would be a waste of this uniquely advantageous location. The team has therefore adopted the POD (Park-Oriented Development) model as the planning framework—transforming ecological green space from a peripheral condition of the community into the central driving force of regional organization, activating the entire A-Island ecological chain through the future commercial development, and ultimately benefiting the broader tourism ecology of Yangma Island.

▽A岛鸟瞰

Field investigation revealed that this is no ordinary embankment. Twice-daily tides continually reshape the shoreline, generating a varied waterline of changing depths; as the tide recedes, expansive tidal flats are exposed, supporting a rich community of benthic organisms that in turn attract flocks of seabirds to feed and roost.

The design cherishes this “dynamic nature”. Rather than being “designed”, the landscape is intended to emerge naturally from the shoreline itself. Following this principle, three zones are defined: a Light Intervention Zone at the interface with the coast, a Participatory Nature Zone in the middle, and a Vitality Interaction Zone adjacent to the commercial frontage.

An axis is introduced to connect the commercial area to the coastline, transforming the relationship from one of mere “viewing and being viewed” into a visual focus that also enables rapid physical engagement.

On the basis of these design principles, a richly layered park system is created, in which ecological, recreational, and social functions coexist in complex symbiosis.

Embankment System

Instead of rigidly separating the beach with hard edges, a freely meandering soft curve—gently traced, as if repeatedly redrawn by the tides—delicately anchors the vitality of the green space to the wild expanse of the sand.

The curve is no random sketch: its most pronounced arc strictly corresponds to the visual axis that links the Seaside Café to the commercial complex. The arc amplifies the visual relationship between the sea and the café and—together with the future commercial development—forms a central visual corridor and a landmark landscape.

The concave sections of the curve, together with the rear of the café, form sheltered harbors that channel cool sea breezes deep into the park’s interior. Even in the height of summer, children can enjoy the beach here in comfort.

Stepped terraces rise layer upon layer along the curve, providing not only a place to rest and cool off, but also a venue for small-scale performances.

This soft boundary allows every landscape scene and every pathway to appear as an organ naturally grown from the coastline itself—intervening gently, and blending in without a trace.

We have rejected trend-driven, “Instagrammable” forms and beach plants unsuited to the northern climate, choosing instead more natural materials that allow the design to recede and listen, merging seamlessly into the broader narrative of the sea.

Lounge seating is tucked into the folds of the terrain, allowing visitors to nestle into nature’s softness and immerse themselves in the sea breeze.

The landscape paths meander within the curve. A subtle gradient in materials leads visitors’ feet, almost imperceptibly, through a psychological transition from urban park to wild beach.

When visitors walk these paths, the changing sensation beneath their feet tells them: there is no instruction here to “enter” or “leave”—only an immersive narrative that walks them from the city into the sea breeze.

Furthermore, we hope to give the northern sea a character of its own, no longer confined to imitating the southern coast. Amid the varied rhythms of the shoreline’s opening and narrowing, a café, a library, and a coral installation are placed.
A Seaside Café layers the sound of grinding coffee with the white noise of waves into a resonant meditation on place.

The wave-shaped seating beneath the café’s gray space animates what would otherwise be a dull space, making it lively and engaging.

A coral art installation, evoking marine organisms, uses translucent materials to shimmer at night like phosphorescent reflections—as if the creatures of the intertidal zone were murmuring on the mudflat. Swings hidden within invite participation.

The Reef Shore Library, positioned closer to the future commercial area, intentionally provides more hard-surface space, leaving room for future vitality and activation.

In response to the modern, clean lines of the architecture and the expansive character of the coast, the plaza seating deliberately avoids an artificial, regimented feel. Plants are clustered loosely, seeping into the hard edges to dissolve any sense of rigidity.

Multi-Dimensional Scene System — The Earth Theater

At the heart of the park stands a 17-meter-tall Chinese hackberry (Celtis sinensis)—the “Tree King”—around which 4,800 square meters of lawn unfold. It serves as both the spiritual symbol of the park and the anchor point for interactive scenes.

People need no direction; they will instinctively move toward it—for across this open lawn, it is the most silent and most powerful landmark.

The seating around the lawn accommodates many modes: solitary morning gazing at the sea and the tree; family laughter and chase in the afternoon; humming and dancing at dusk.

It can also become a starlit lawn concert, a seasonal tea gathering, a storytelling circle, a summer open-air cinema.

Seating near the coast carries wave-textured patterning, foreshadowing the seascape to come.

The Earth Theater has no fixed “stage” and no fixed “audience”. It is not a space that must be “used”—it is a place where things simply happen.

Multi-Dimensional Scene System — Oxygen Play Park

Spanning more than 4,000 square meters, the Oxygen Play Park is co-designed with two excellent firms, Pailan and Su Shui. Its design logic is not to win through scale but to multiply spatial efficiency through the layered superposition of functions. Positioned as the vitality core of the entire park, it also serves as an emotional buffer between the commercial inner street and the natural coast—children’s laughter here is the softest medium connecting the consumption scene to the natural scene.

It is divided into three main areas: Miracle Forest, Miracle Island, and Underwater Ranch.

Underwater Ranch: By creating rich topographic variation, the design generates streams, shallows, mist, and other water forms, allowing children to experience the diversity of water through its many “expressions”.

Interactive water features are hidden among the rocks, inviting children to explore freely.

Three stone columns stand quietly in the shallow water. Their rough, weather-resistant surfaces simulate the texture of sea-eroded rock, while inside they house a multi-mode water feature system—mist sprays and intermittent water jets alternate, making every approach full of surprise.

Children weave, hide, and test their courage among the columns—when the mist rises, their playmates’ figures blur, but their laughter grows clearer. Hide-and-seek is no longer about “being found”, but about the surprise of “being ambushed by water” and the courage of “knowing you’ll get wet but choosing to step closer”.

Miracle Island: The Conch Theater is more than a piece of play equipment—it is the visual symbol and brand signature of the entire Oxygen Play Park.

Inside, rope tunnels, spiral climbing structures, and rotating slides unfold in spiraling layers within the conch’s shell. Every turn hides a surprise, offering children a novel and free play experience as they climb, slide, and explore.

Miracle Forest: Boardwalks thread through the entire Miracle Forest, adding a vertical dimension to the play experience. Children’s play equipment is integrated closely with the terrain and plantings, providing a natural, varied, and engaging play experience.

What children gain here is not merely physical release—it is a sensory education that moves in step with the rhythms of nature.

The path system in the activity area offers no deliberate “routes”—only gaps in the forest floor repeatedly confirmed by children’s footsteps, and shortcuts spontaneously chosen as they run. The boardwalk treads point toward the direction of greatest curiosity, while the wooden steps land precisely in the most comfortable gaps between tree roots. Here, there is no getting lost—only paths not yet discovered.

Caretaker seating abandons regimented, arrayed layouts, instead intervening in the site through a posture of “scattered randomness”—leaning against the slide, half-hidden among fountain grass, or taking the form of a lounger.

Sit down, and the children running about fill the corner of your eye; behind you, the sea breeze whispers through the grass.

The design preserves the wildness of the site with maximum restraint, yet attends to the details of care with great delicacy. Hand-washing stations and pet-friendly facilities do not call attention to themselves but are within reach whenever needed.

This coastline will continue to unfold in the future. It is not a park—it is a sustainable, nature-symbiotic coastal way of life.
