The Polytechnic Academic Complex, a LEED-Gold certified project at the core of the greater Arizona State University campus, reclaims the decommissioned Williams Air Force Base. The client and design team collaborated to transform acres of asphalt, concrete, and river rock into an academic, social and ecological campus hub that embraces and sustains desert life. Central to the design was the transformation of an asphalt flood-prone street into a lush, desert arroyo that nourishes the landscape. The campus mall along its banks links the complex’s academic buildings, courtyards, outdoor classrooms, and desert gardens, while bridges across the arroyo connect the complex to the greater campus. This fluid indoor-outdoor learning environment provides students, staff, and faculty with the opportunity to connect daily with nature. Infused with native Sonoran Desert plants and reused paving material salvaged from the site, the campus landscape promotes biodiversity and fosters a sense of place, while regionally-inspired water features such as tinajas, seeps, arroyos, and canals harvest stormwater, mitigate flood, and celebrate the ephemeral presence of water.
