Can you introduce yourself to Chinese readers? Let’s talk about the opportunities that led you to establish Shma.

I have experience working as a landscape architect in Singapore for 7 years after graduating from Chulalongkorn University in Thailand. Singapore was like an international melting pot of the region, allowing me to work with various kinds of quality projects such as High-end residentials, Resort, and Urban design. More importantly, another thing that I learned from Singapore is its significant emphasis on ecological-led landscape design with urban development to create a liveable city. My partners – Mr. Namchai Saensupha and Mr. Yossapon Boonsom, and I founded Shma with the interest to tackle many challenges cities are facing through landscape profession.

What do you think of the atmosphere in the company? What kind of system / idea do you think is beneficial to the company in the rapid development process? What key points do you think each founder learned from past work experience when starting a company?

We value creativity from collaboration within our team. Moreover, we work in hand externally, with multidisciplinary specialists, consultants, clients, stakeholders and even people and community outside design discipline to gain insights from different perspectives in order to creatively achieve the right solution for each project. As a result, fresh ideas gained from these work process help us competing in this rapidly disrupted design industry.

Shma has produced many high-quality apartment / hotel landscape projects. We can feel that the design pays great attention to the user’s experience in the space. What do Shma think about the design of people and landscape?

We truly see people as a part of our design. Every project aims to understand the intimate relationship between users and space, concerning on scale, visual and functionality, while also tackling bigger environmental and social challenges occurred nowadays.

Thailand is one of the world’s most famous tourist destinations. It can conclude that the country has attracted the attention all over the world. How did Shma manifest locality in the design? How do you use traditional elements? Do you have any in-depth research on the cultural?

Actually, we don’t perceive culture much in terms of ornamental traditional elements. We focus more on such intangible aspect which is a local wisdom or local way of life. As a result, we aim to unearth what cannot be seen, but truly existed, which could be discovered in each context through our design process.

For example, in our project, The Ritz Carlton Samui, the overall concept is initially inspired by the idea of rockery coastline but further develop to express deeper cultural meaning behind it which is the local fishermen in Samui who’s cultivating oyster inhabiting on these rocks.

In today’s urban life, people are facing many social and environmental issues. What aspects does Shma pay more attention to when designing? Do you follow any principles in the large quantity of practices? Can you give an example?

As mentioned before, we always follow on the concerns on social and environmental issues. For social enhancement, we encourage public participation in public projects, especially urban design scale. For instance, during the workshop of Co-create Charoenkrung, various stakeholders were invited together to communicate their own thoughts, negotiate and find collaboration between each other. Private project like Jin Wellbeing County addresses senior living, social issue happening in many countries.

Likewise, environmental issues like air pollution – PM 2.5 in Bangkok is featured in Forest House, a compact but impactful greenery project. Other significant problems – flooding and drought are solved with thoughtful water and green management as a core of our design.

In the recent collaborative proposal, Bangkok Green Network with The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA), what do you think the Green Network can do for Bangkok or people’s lives? As a landscape office, how does Shma negotiate with government agencies and guide decision-making?

To be straightforward, Bangkok Green Network is not literally a project. It is more like an initiative proposal made by us aiming to make Bangkok more liveable with green assets and facilities, requiring only low investment but could make a great impact to our cites.

The project benefits the city in many ways, such as absorbing 1,620 tons of Carbon Dioxide and 3,580 tons of dust per year, together with enhancing biodiversity to civic life. In addition, such linear greenery would encourage people to commute by walking which hopefully would indirectly generate commercial activity along the way and give positive effect on local economic growth. Crimes would eventually reduce when idle spaces are turned into enjoyable public space, resulting in the addition of inclusive space for our society.

In doing so, we believed that private sectors like us, designers, can be the one who step up to propose a project. We see such potential in Co-Creation process from different stakeholders both private and public. All can work together through participatory process to achieve social cohesion and sense of ownership, which are the goal in obtaining a sustainable future.

Regarding the high-density vertical greening boom in Thailand, what do you think of vertical greening? How can you achieve the design with sustainability goal in vertical greening?

We thought of vertical green elements more than just their aesthetic purposes. They can be applied thoughtfully in architecture design based on sustainable function. In order to achieve that, we need to understand trees and plantings well – studying fertilization issues, proper ways of maintenance, and suitable selections of species for vertical living.

Shma’s office locates in a residential area in the city, which is different from many Chinese offices. Do you think your working environment has any inspiration on the design process?

Definitely, yes. Shma has a home-like working environment. Human scale features in our office’s house and garden allows employees to become closer to nature, feel comfy and not overstressing. More importantly, these living details support our creativity to deliver design in a high quality, and also makes us happy and refreshing in dealing with such challenging working life.

We noticed that Shma is gradually going abroad to undertake more projects in different contexts, such as projects in China. What do you think of the new challenges for Shma?

Shma has been working in many projects across the region – Indonesia, China or Singapore. We are truly excited and looking forward to new opportunities arises from challenges in international projects. We believe that learning from unfamiliar context will surely broaden our perspective and introduce remarkable possibility to us. At the end, these will possibly be great for a creative firm like Shma.

Are there any issues that the office has been focusing on recently? What interesting project have you been doing recently? What is the future development goal of Shma?

We have recently been expanding our services apart from making changes to cities with landscape design professions, in order to enhance urban development to become more effective and pragmatic.

We launched a platform called “We!Park” which invites various stakeholders to collaborate in turning unutilized space in the city into pocket green public space for a better quality of life. Moreover, “City Cracker”, an online media is established to deliver refreshing contents and curiosity about urban and city re-creation with its slogan, “Little Crack, Hack the City.”
Landscape design, which is our core strength is also expanding to involve with more public projects that help support cities to be ready for the future. All of these expansive framework are working together to achieve our ultimate goal, reflected through Shma’s motto, “passion for the better earth.”
