This project involves the renovation of an existing ranch house and the development of a new vineyard on a property in the Santa Ynez Valley, north of Santa Barbara. We embraced some of the quirky aspects of the original landscape, such as a large peace sign made of lava stone, and transplanted existing jojoba shrubs that were cultivated as a crop on the eight-acre property.
We designed a weathered steel arbor to span the back of the house and shade new seating areas that overlook the new vineyard. We placed a bocce court among the vines and located a fire pit to face the mountain views beyond. Due to local water restrictions and the ongoing drought, we used a streamlined palette of drought-tolerant plants and designed expanses of pea stone around the house. Working with a vineyard consultant, we designed the layout of the vineyard to capitalize on long vistas down the rows from the house and gardens.
