ToThree: Alongside the ancient remnants of Jin Zhongdu, an installation of over 200,000 custom-fabricated metal shingles forms a fluid, undulating surface that ripples with the shifting sunlight. More than a rigid structure, it is a spatial dialogue between light, curvature, and time—a visual poem where computational logic meets Eastern symbolism.
Situated adjacent to the Jin Zhongdu archaeological site in Beijing, the project was conceived by Zhu Yufan Studio, with technical development and execution by Tothree Art Studio. Drawing on the concept of the “Dragon Vein”—a cultural lifeline—the design echoes Beijing’s 800-year urban evolution. Here, 200,000 perforated aluminum shingles interact with stone terrain and water features to create a seamless environmental system, translating historical resonance into a contemporary spatial experience.
This article explores the project from both artistic and engineering perspectives, detailing how a strategy of parametric decomposition and modular prefabrication balanced cultural narrative, visual aesthetic, and physical construction.
Cultural Foundation & Historical Context
Since its founding as Jin Zhongdu, Beijing has evolved through the Yuan, Ming, and Qing dynasties, forming one of the world’s most continuous urban systems. Designing beside these ruins was not merely an act of homage; it was an attempt to rearticulate Beijing’s spatial spirit through a modern architectural language.
In his classic treatise Yingzao Fashi, Li Jie (Northern Song Dynasty) proposed the “Cai-fen” modular system to harmonize component proportions with structural integrity. This construction logic, rooted in rational proportion, is central to the Chinese aesthetic tradition where “form serves as the vessel for meaning.” This project builds on this rational heritage, using computational design to reactivate traditional structural thinking. Through parametric algorithms, we have reconstructed these modular relationships, allowing complex curved surfaces to be controlled with a beauty of clear and restrained order.
Mathematics has long served as the philosophical backbone of architecture. Just as ancient builders used geometric rules to define the graceful lift of an eave, this project utilizes algorithmic control to find the inherent logic within form.
As Gaudí famously noted: “The straight line belongs to man, the curved line to God.” Today, those curves are not just poetic—they are calculable. This installation interprets the cadence of traditional timber construction through prefabricated metal, blending Eastern aesthetics with modern engineering precision.
This installation is neither a mere shell nor a functional enclosure, but a spatial manifestation of a natural vernacular. It unfolds across the site like a hidden “Dragon Vein”—a cultural lifeline emerging from the earth. Each aluminum shingle acts as a fragment of light drawn from the depths of time, converging into a contemporary manifestation of the ancient capital’s memory.
Artistic Form & Spatial Expression
200,000 prefabricated aluminum shingles are meticulously arrayed across a free-form surface, creating an undulating spatial rhythm across a vast 3,600-square-meter topography. As the sun traverses the sky, the metallic skin generates a fluid sequence of reflections, transforming the installation into a perceptible “carrier of light.”
The serialized layout of the shingles stems from the rational logic of UV mapping while serving as a contemporary reinterpretation of the traditional “Wa-zuo” (roof tiling) craft. Unlike the linear repetition of classical roofing, each shingle here is assigned a unique spatial coordinate through parametric decomposition. This approach preserves a sense of order while transcending the constraints of flat planes and unidirectional orientation.
From a distance, the surface behaves like terrain. Light filters through it in layers, creating a visual symphony of shadow and shimmer. The curves act as a medium of cultural continuity, transforming modular rhythm into a historical footnote rewritten for a new era.
Engineering Challenges & Digital Construction
The friction between artistic vision and material reality—particularly regarding non-standard surfaces and high-precision assembly—was bridged through a full-process strategy of parametric decomposition and modular prefabrication.

Free-Form Geometry Control
To manage the complexity of the non-standard components, parametric tools optimized the geometry into manageable zones: the Entry Canopy, the Courtyard Staircase, and the Landscape Areas (“Golden Mountain, Golden Water”). Algorithms decomposed these surfaces into clear geometric units with unified nodal coordinates, turning abstract complexity into measurable data.
The “rhythmic curve,” the primary visual motif of the site, finds its most concentrated expression at the entrance. As the first spatial threshold, the entrance is more than a functional gateway; it is where the curvilinear narrative is first physically experienced. Within the nearly 7-meter-high entry space, a sweeping curve symbolizing the “flow” of the site sets the spatial tempo and emotional tone for the entire installation.
The entry waterfall utilizes the same stone system as the courtyard, with units meticulously carved to form a continuous, undulating surface. Using Rhino for precise segmentation, the surface was divided into nearly 400 unique units, each fabricated via automated production lines.
On-site, these units were assembled, polished, and grouted to achieve a monolithic appearance. At the summit, the stone integrates perfectly with the prefabricated metal shingles, where concealed water outlets are embedded to complete the node’s functional and aesthetic closure.
Massive scale and modular prefabrication
Covering an expansive area of 3,600 m^2, the integrated curved system demanded extreme surface smoothness and structural precision. The metal shingles are secured to perforated panels via flush-head rivets, with all components fabricated and finished in-factory. An orthogonal structural grid of 1m × 3m forms the “sculptural backbone,” guiding the surface trajectory while optimizing costs and schedules. In areas of high curvature, the grid is refined to 1m × 1m to heighten geometric fidelity.
Module dimensions were calibrated during the design development (DD) phase to account for logistics, lifting, and assembly constraints. The parametric model simultaneously generated unique IDs and fabrication drawings for every component, ensuring a closed-loop workflow from the digital twin to the physical construct.
The entrance features a motorized kinetic gate that follows the same surface logic. Rising nearly 6 meters and weighing 3 tons, the gate’s metal curves shift subtly with the light as it opens, turning a functional movement into a ceremonial spatial narrative.
During the construction phase, interface conflicts frequently occurred between the landscape retaining walls, architectural facades, and the sculptural modules. The team utilized 3D laser scanning for as-built verification, feeding real-time field data back into the digital model to dynamically calibrate component dimensions and installation paths. This established a data-centric “Digital Twin Construction” workflow. Through intensive cross-disciplinary coordination, construction sequences and joint detailing were continuously refined to ensure the seamless integration of divergent systems.
As the digital model and the physical site converge through data, the logic of the curve transitions from the algorithmic realm back to the human scale of movement.
The staircase leading to the sunken courtyard follows the overall flow; cascading metal shingles descend along the path of “flowing water,” as if guided by invisible vector lines. The curved textures of the stonework form a track for the water, lending a tangible, tactile quality to the ephemeral element of flow. As they descend, the fluid metal shingles interlock naturally into the crevices of the stone, appearing to “cradle” the stream. Here, three distinct materials—metal, stone, and water—are integrated into a seamless environmental experience.
Within the embrace of the sunken courtyard, a small waterfall is embedded within the metal framework. The precise alignment between the non-standard prefabricated units and the stone waterfall was a critical technical challenge. The team first installed the waterfall structure, then utilized 3D laser scanning to compare the as-built conditions with the Rhino model, iteratively calibrating the position of the metal modules. Through this process, the edges of the metal surfaces were sculpted to fit the stone’s contours, achieving a flush or interlocked finish where divergent materials converge seamlessly. This meticulous control over the material interface is both a primary design objective and a testament to the spirit of craftsmanship.
Where Art & Engineering Converge
Each shingle acts as a musical note of light, precisely “composed” within the factory and orchestrated into a collective rhythm during on-site assembly. At the construction stage, digital logic and artisanal craftsmanship intertwine, allowing complex, non-standard geometries to manifest as a poetic presence in the physical world. This strategy of parametric tessellation and modular prefabrication ensures both the precise control of form and the efficiency of execution, establishing an integrated “Design-Fabrication-Assembly” workflow.
This strategy not only addresses the technical challenges posed by free-form geometries, massive scales, and construction constraints, but also highlights the role of digital methodology as a bridge between artistic vision and material realization. It enables a synergetic coexistence where poetic design expression and rational engineering precision reinforce one another.
Upon completion, the installation exudes a multi-disciplinary tension: artistically, the interplay of curves and light sculpts a perceptible, poetic space; engineerically, parametric and modular strategies guarantee structural precision; and culturally, the spirit of the ancient capital is reactivated through the sequence of metal shingles.
This is an intertemporal ensemble—a dialogue between ancestors and contemporaries, a fusion of the natural and the digital, and a resonance between art and engineering.
