MIND STUDIO: When “gardens” became Suzhou’s most prominent label, the world grew accustomed to seeking the essence of Jiangnan among its pavilions, towers, and winding paths. Yet, when we look beyond this exquisitely carved frame, we find that beneath Suzhou’s surface lies not merely soil, but a network of rivers.
This is a true “floating city.” Water bodies account for nearly 40% of its area, with a dense web of over 20,000 waterways and more than 300 lakes. Here, water is no longer just a landscape divided by land—it is the land itself. Roads follow the waterways, vegetation spreads across islands and shores, and life flourishes along the riverbanks. Gently cradled and permeated by water, the entire city embodies a unique buoyancy and a leisurely, unhurried temperament, which reflects the intrinsic water-town wisdom to “bear weight with softness.”So, after all, this is Jiangnan.
Half Water, Half Land, a Gently Mooring Place
The project is situated beside the Grand Canal in Suzhou, surrounded by an interlacing network of waterways that ensures excellent connectivity. Here, the design does not follow the complex grammar of traditional gardens; whether it is winding paths, borrowed scenery, or framed views, everything is approached with restraint. We aim not to create the tension of “being on display” or the ceremony of “being viewed,” but rather to evoke a rhythm of life intrinsic to the water town—a pace that is unhurried and natural. Free from decorative excess, it grows slowly within the poetic essence of Jiangnan, forming a healing and tranquil natural aesthetic order.
Unlike traditional enclosed townhouse arrangements, the overall space is broken down into independent yet interconnected “mountain-and-stream islands.” They resemble settlements naturally scattered across the water network, subtly linked by waterways and paths. What flows between these islands is a gentle, fluid presence that acts as a soft, natural medium, akin to water itself.
Islands are complete and self-contained microcosms. Moving between them is like shifting through one’s own diverse states of mind, whether contemplative, social, solitary, or open. Yet the very act of crossing from one to another weaves these separate states back into an inner, organic connection. Like an archipelago, the islands watch over each other across shared waters, each thriving in its own way. Living beside the vibrancy of the city, one can still fully embrace the ever-changing poetry of mountains and streams through the four seasons.
This movement between islands is, in essence, a form of relaxed drifting. Drifting means being gently lifted by an external force; it is a peaceful surrender that does not require one to seek direction. Only by truly letting go can we allow this force to carry us, moving from the state of “trying to rest” toward a holistic release, restoring both body and mind.
The entire “floating island” is insulated from the clamor of traffic by a serene canal, accessible only via a tranquil bridge. It feels like a light, poetic ritual, a hidden retreat within the urban bustle. Crossing the bridge means stepping into a world apart. A stone-built mountain gate stands quietly amid a grove of Chinese tallow trees, surrounded by lush greenery. A still water basin mirrors the sky, while rain chains glisten softly, as if adorned with lingering morning dew.
How deep does the courtyard unfold? Passing through the gate, one arrives at the first courtyard, the starting point of the floating island journey. Here, abundant tallow trees stand alongside rustic mountain stones. The stone surfaces retain their raw texture, shifting from refinement back to roughness, with traces of time gently revealed. Step by step, the dust of the outside world gradually washes away.
Thus, in this gradually deepening tranquility, the space extends toward the next. Rather than being drawn forcefully into a rigid axis of order, one is gently guided onward through semi-covered corridors where eaves meet and angles deliberately shift. Here, there is no need for ceremonial solemnity, only a safe, warm sense of enclosure that softly nurtures the mood of the stroll. The light is subtle, shelter from wind and rain is assured, and nature permeates thoughtfully throughout.
Passing through the corridor into the hall, beyond the reception area, we created a wharf-like outdoor space. The lowered ceiling, horizontal lines, and orientation toward the open water all evoke a feeling of docking and awaiting. Here, one may sit quietly facing the lake and its distant islands, as if waiting for a boat to carry them away from busyness and anxiety.
With shimmering water flowing and a hazy mist rising, in this dreamlike moment, it becomes hard to tell whether the shore is gently drifting or one has already become part of the scenery, as if standing at the very heart of the water.
At the heart of the lake lies an islet, outlined in crisp, contemporary lines that evoke the spirit of natural brushwork. Its form resembles a shape polished by years of flowing water, tapered on both sides like a spindle, embodying not an imitation of nature, but an unadorned tension and serene stillness. It stretches quietly toward the pier like a strong yet gentle arm extended from the landscape, radiating a calm, profound sense of gravity.
The island is densely wooded, layered in lush green shades. Gazing into the deep, shadowy thicket feels like listening to the ceaseless rustle of time in growth, as though one could hear the endless whisper of time itself, lost in reverie.
If the reception pavilion as a “dock” represents mooring and watching, and the island at the heart of the lake as a “longing” symbolizes calling and distance, then the human state between them is that of “waiting to set sail.” This is the most poetic moment; hope has already unfolded, yet the journey has not yet begun. Like an archetype of ideal living, it forever holds the aspiration for the beauty of “there,” while peacefully enjoying the pause of “here,” and between the two, preserves that open, possibility-filled “expanse of water.”
Upon the island floats a light pavilion. Its form draws inspiration from traditional dougong brackets, with upturned eaves that rise slightly like the bow of a boat parting the water, visually suggesting a readiness to sail, yet serenely anchored upon the clear waves. Within the pavilion, seating is arranged for shared moments; tea steam and thoughts linger together, drifting gently with the breeze into the boundless interplay of water, light, and cloud shadow.
On one side of the courtyard, the clubhouse is gently connected by openwork corridor frames. Each room possesses a carefully framed view. Light steps in through the lattice, wind weaves between beams and columns, and greenery grows inward along the seams. Life here returns to a kind of humble relativity. One sits facing the sky’s light, breathing together with the shadows of trees. Every window is an unfinished poem, waiting for the everyday to pause, gaze, and then fall into rhythm with nature.
In such a water-rich environment, light is never still. It is fractured by the water’s surface, reflected as rippling, shimmering patterns. Architecture serves as the “fixed” anchor, while light and shadow are the “flowing” waves. Their interweaving forms the floating foundation; the body is steadied by the structure’s support, yet the mind is immersed in a soft swell of light. Meanwhile, the network of waterways, plain paving, and stone walls further diffuse direct sunlight into an even, gentle glow, softening hard edges and allowing everything to be bathed within. Thus, one is tenderly uplifted by this luminous, unaggressive brightness.
Finally, all these elements, including the freely growing plants, the non-axial flowing spaces, and the dynamic and gentle play of light and shadow, work together to dissolve the sharp boundaries between inside and outside, architecture and nature, the man-made and the innate. Space becomes a “transitional layer,” a “medium,” much like water itself. One no longer stands within a building to view the scenery but merges into the entire “realm.” This sense of boundlessness gives rise to “floating,” and one’s own sense of weight becomes blurred, allowing the mind to attain that precious moment of “weightlessness.”
The buoyancy of water only lifts a fully relaxed body; healing, too, begins with release. “Lying flat” is not passive, but a profound act of trust, allowing oneself to merge into a larger natural order and be peacefully carried by it. It is a shift from “having to understand and conquer” toward “being able to feel and trust.” Trust in the water, trust in the wind, trust in the scenes and rhythms arranged by nature, and ultimately, trust that even without gripping the helm, one will not sink.
The project was completed as winter faded and spring awakened, a time of renewal for all things. It symbolizes a true inner awakening and the beginning of all that is beautiful. May we all take this to heart, to “lie flat” in a present where even rest requires effort. To learn to float amid life’s turbulent currents, to find that peaceful stretch of water that carries us, and to arrive at a genuine, inner repose.
