Turing Lab /

Turing (Landscape) Lab:Project Background: Rethinking the Relationship Between Contemporary Housing and Nature

As residential products become increasingly homogenized, landscape design is gradually reduced to style, symbols, and visual consumption. As spatial production relies more and more on established product logic, design often struggles to genuinely challenge or alter existing paradigms. Landscape design has begun to prioritize superficial order, material refinement, and immediate visual experiences, while the deeper relationship between people and nature is gradually obscured behind form.

However, the most fundamental question in landscape design has never been “what style to create,” but rather: How can we reinterpret the relationship between humans and nature? Because a truly sophisticated landscape does not make people aware of the design itself; rather, it allows them to rediscover the presence of nature within it.

The Oriental Naturalist Residential Landscape seeks to explore spatial possibilities better suited to future ways of living. The essence of the East lies not in form, but in spirit. The true East is not a visible symbol, but a relationship that is felt. We hope to redefine the term “East” as contemporary, global, gentle, and profound.

Responding to Nature with Chaos: The Rugged East

The East has never been a fixed form. The true East is an attitude toward nature. Carving ruggedness with a rustic touch and responding to nature with a sense of disorder—this is what we understand as the “Rugged East.” Here, “rustic” does not mean rough, but rather a simplicity born of restraint.

The entrance is not merely a spatial node, but a transition involving time, emotion, and place. Pathways, light and shadow, plants, and stone collectively form a spatial narrative that unfolds from the exterior to the interior. We do not simply tell guests, “You have arrived.” Instead, we allow them to unconsciously forge a new connection with nature.

It returns materials to their essence, allowing stone to retain its rugged texture and wood to reveal the warmth left by the passage of time. It frees spaces from reliance on excessive embellishment, drawing their strength instead from authenticity. True nature is not a contrived scene, but a living system that continues to grow and evolve. This “disorder” is not chaos; rather, it is an order that aligns more closely with the laws of nature.

Plants do not need to be completely domesticated; rather, they seek a balance between human-imposed order and natural wildness. Spaces do not need to be absolutely neat; instead, they develop their own rhythm through change. “Plants are not mere decorations; they are the life of a space.” Only when we reinterpret nature will we discover that true order is often hidden within seemingly disordered growth. Though they appear to follow no rules, over the course of time they have formed a stable and complex equilibrium.

In traditional spatial design, function and nature are often separated. Stairs are merely paths connecting different elevation levels; feature walls are simply boundaries dividing spaces; and paving is just a surface for walking. However, a truly vibrant space does not treat nature as an afterthought or mere decoration, but rather integrates it as an integral part of the spatial composition. Incorporating natural elements into functional structures such as stairs and feature walls represents a reinterpretation of the relationship between people and nature. Landscape design is not about keeping nature within one’s field of vision; rather, it is about allowing nature to permeate every detail of daily life.

Design is no longer about adding plants, stones, or natural imagery after a function has been established; rather, it involves incorporating nature into the generation of function from the very beginning of the spatial logic. A landscape wall is not merely a tool for overcoming topography. It can become an extension of the terrain, allowing rocks, plants, and paths to collectively shape the walking experience; a landscape wall is not merely a spatial boundary.

Reconnecting the Interior with Nature: The Warmth of the East

The Eastern concept of space has never been about a division between the interior and the exterior, but rather about establishing a subtle relationship between the two. The interior is on a human scale. It embodies the warmth of daily life and, through wood, stone, textiles, and subtle play of light and shadow, creates a sense of calm and understated space. The outdoors is on the scale of nature. It embraces the seasons, wind and rain, the growth of plants, and the traces left by time, presenting a free and open state of life. The two are not severed from one another but engage in a dialogue across their boundaries.

The value of a space lies not merely in its functional capacity, but in how it guides shifts in people’s emotions. We do not seek to establish clear boundaries, but rather to create subtle transitions between different states. Recess does more than simply accommodate the human body; it creates an emotional connection between people and their environment. It is no longer merely a functional node, but rather transforms people’s posture and perception.

Eastern aesthetics never seeks absolute control. It embraces nature’s imperfections and respects the traces left by time. Space is not a closed container, but rather an ever-evolving relationship. Let the warmth of the interior respond to the freedom of the outdoors; let man-made order embrace natural growth. Ultimately, this gives rise to a spatial condition unique to the East: one that does not isolate itself from nature, but rather builds a way of life within it. Nature is not merely a decorative element introduced into the space, but becomes an integral part of the space’s spirit. On one end lies the order and refinement crafted by human hands; on the other, the freedom and unpredictability of natural growth. It is precisely in this interplay of conflict and harmony that space gains its true vitality.

Oriental Space never fixates on creating absolute boundaries, but rather seeks a subtle balance between the interior and the exterior. Space is no longer simply divided into “indoor” and “outdoor,” but instead establishes a continuous, fluid relationship between the two. The two interpenetrate, forming a new spatial experience within a state of blurred boundaries. At the core of Eastern naturalism lies the pursuit of balance: preserving the warmth of human presence while respecting the freedom of nature. Rather than placing nature outside the space, it is about allowing the space to return to nature.

Negative Space and Relationships in Space: The Poetic East

At the heart of Eastern Naturalism lies the search for a balance: preserving the human touch while respecting nature’s freedom. It does not place nature outside of space, but rather allows space to return to nature. It does not rush to define the boundaries of space, but instead creates a subtle tension between the interior and the exterior, the man-made and the natural, and order and freedom.

Therefore, Eastern Naturalism is not a style, but a philosophy of life. It transforms courtyards into more than mere places to linger, plants into more than just elements of the landscape, and spaces into an integral part of nature’s growth. “Nature is in no hurry to accomplish anything, yet everything is happening.” Eastern Naturalist landscapes seek precisely this slow yet profound power—allowing people to rediscover inner peace within nature.

Establish a subtle, fluid, and poetic relationship between different spaces. Rather than simply dividing one courtyard from another with walls, a sense of spatial interaction—both intimate and distant—is created through the interplay of light and shadow, vegetation, pathways, framed views, and sound. This allows spaces of different scales to respond to one another both visually and emotionally.

This relationship gives rise to a poetic quality unique to the East: seeing, yet not fully possessing; connecting, yet maintaining a distance; encountering, yet leaving room for more. This is precisely the deepest poetic essence of the Eastern naturalistic landscape.

A truly poetic plant landscape does not seek the splendor of perpetual bloom, but embraces nature’s imperfections. In such a plant design, the garden is no longer a static image, but an unfolding narrative of life. This is the deepest poetry of plant design.

Eastern Naturalist landscape design represents a rethinking of residential spaces. Eastern Naturalism is neither a return to traditional Eastern gardens nor a simple pursuit of a natural style; rather, it seeks to reestablish a relationship with nature that is relevant to contemporary people within the context of modern lifestyles.

“The East should not be a static, formulaic image, but rather a spatial experience rooted in a spiritual essence. A new approach that’s not so ‘real estate’-oriented!” — Yuan Xiaohui

Appendix: AI-Assisted Landscape Design for Eastern Naturalism

The emergence of AI does more than simply improve design efficiency; it introduces a new way of thinking to landscape design. Every technological advancement pushes the boundaries of how designers understand space. This is also our first attempt to use AI to assist in the implementation of a project.
